IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
When using your telephone equipment and installing this D-Kit, the
following safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk
of fire, electric shock, and injury to persons.
d
Read and understand all instructions.
d
Follow all warnings and instructions marked on the telephone.
d
To reduce the risk of electrical shock, disconnect all cords before
opening the telephone to install this D-Kit.
d
This telephone can be hazardous if immersed in water. To avoid the
possibility of electrical shock, do not use the telephone while you are
in the bathtub or shower, or when you are wet. If you accidentally
drop the telephone into water, do not retrieve it until you have first
unplugged the line cord from the modular wall jack. Do not reconnect
the telephone until it has dried thoroughly.
d
Avoid using the telephone during electrical storms in your immediate
area. There is a remote risk of electric shock from lightning. Urgent
calls should be brief. Even though protective measures may have
been installed to limit electrical surges from entering your home or
business, absolute protection from lightning is impossible.
d
If you suspect a natural gas leak, report it immediately, but use a
telephone away from the area in question. The telephone’s electrical
contacts could generate a tiny spark. While unlikely, it is possible
that this spark could ignite heavy concentrations of gas.
d
Never push objects of any kind into the telephone through housing
slots since they may touch hazardous voltage points or short out
parts that could result in a risk of electric shock. Never spill liquid of
any kind on the telephone. If liquid is spilled, however, refer servicing
to proper service personnel.
d
Slots and openings in the housing and the back or bottom of the
telephone are provided for ventilation to protect it from overheating;
these openings must not be blocked or covered. The openings
should never be blocked by placing the telephone on a sofa, rug, or
other similar surface. This product should not be placed in a built-in
installation unless proper ventilation is provided.
d
The telephone should be operated only from the type of power
source indicated on the marking label. If you are not sure of the type
of power supply being used, contact a qualified service person.
d
Do not allow anything to rest on the power cord. Do not locate this
product where the cord will be abused by persons walking on it.
d
Do not overload the AC wall outlets and extension cords as this can
result in risk of fire or electric shock.
2

bc cb
d
Before cleaning, unplug the telephone from the modular wall jack.
Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners. Use a damp cloth for
cleaning.
d
Unplug the telephone from the modular wall jack and refer servicing
to qualified service personnel when these conditions exist:
d
When the power supply cord or plug is damaged or frayed.
d
If liquid has been spilled into the telephone.
d
If the telephone has been exposed to rain or water.
d
If the telephone has been dropped or the housing has been
damaged.
d
If you note a distinct change in the performance of the telephone.
d
If the telephone does not operate normally by following the operating
instructions, adjust only those controls described in the User’s
Manual. Do not attempt to adjust any other controls since doing so
may result in damage to the telephone and will require extensive
work by a qualified technician to restore the telephone to normal
operation.
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
When you see this warning symbol on the product, refer
to the instructions booklet packed with the product for
information before proceeding.
This product is intended for use with the ADB printed
wiring board assembly (Comcode: 846704229) or the TMI
printed wiring board assembly (Comcode: 847016854).

The ISDN 8510T Firmware
The following instructions will help you install a new EPROM, or replace
the old EPROM, on an Asynchronous Data Board (ADB) or
Telecommunications Multimedia Interface (TMI) board on an 8510T
terminal. In this way, you can upgrade the terminal firmware to a later
release.
Removing the 8510T Terminal from Operation
Before you remove the old EPROM, you should disconnect the cords
which connect the 8510T terminal with the system. See Figure 1 for the
location of the jacks and routing channels.
1Pick up the handset (you can leave it connected with the terminal)
and lay it aside.
2Turn the terminal over and disconnect the line cord from the Line jack
and the cord of any adjunct equipment from the Adjunct jack. You
can leave the cables in the routing channels.

Installing the ADB and TMI Boards
The EPROM described in these directions is connected to an ADB or a
TMI board in the 8510T terminal. If you have not installed this board,
see the instructions that are shipped with the board,
ISDN 8510T Voice
Terminal Instructions for Installing the Asynchronous Data Board (ADB)
or Telephone Multimedia Interface (TMI) Board
(Comcode: 106910680;
CIC Ordering Number: 555-021-754).
Removing the Old EPROM Cartridge (if necessary);
Inserting the New EPROM Cartridge
Once the desktop stand has been removed from the terminal and the
ADB or TMI board is in place, you can install or replace the EPROM.
1If you are upgrading the software of your current terminal, and
therefore replacing the EPROM, slowly remove the old EPROM with
a screwdriver. Slide the screwdriver under the EPROM, as shown in
Figure 3, and slowly and gently lift up on the EPROM until the
EPROM works free.
NOTE: Figure 3 shows a TMI board; however, the location of the
EPROM is the same on both the ADB and the TMI boards.

Removing the Blanks in the Back of the Desktop Stand
(if necessary)
Before you can reinstall the desktop stand on the base of the terminal,
the blanks which cover the connector holes on the rear of the stand must
be removed. If you have already completed this procedure when
installing the ADB or TMI board, go on to ‘‘Reinstalling the Desktop
Stand.’’
If you have not removed the connector hole blanks, follow this
procedure.
1Turn the desktop stand so that you can see the blanks which cover
the holes for the RS232 connector (the long rectangular blank) and
the 8-pin round connector (the square blank). For the location of
these blanks, see Figure 7.

If you have installed an ADB, replace the square blank into the
8-pin round connector hole, so that the hole is covered again.
d
If you have installed a TMI board, rotate the blank 180 degrees so
that the connector hole cover is now on the left and the part of the
blank with the square connector opening is now on the right. See
Figure 8 for a drawing of the 8-pin connector blank. Place the
blank back in the hole so that there is an opening through which
the 8-pin round connector will protrude.

Installing the EMI Shield in the Stand
Make certain that the black EMI shield has been screwed into the stand.
If it has not, see the instructions that are shipped with the ADB and the
TMI board, the ‘‘ISDN 8510T Voice Terminal Instructions for Installing
the Asynchronous Data Board (ADB) or Telephone Nultimedia Interface
(TMI) Board.’’
Reinstalling the Desktop Stand
1Carefully replace the desktop stand by placing the upper desktop
stand tab in the terminal slot at the top of the terminal.
Be sure that
the RS232 connector shows through the long rectangular connector
opening. If you have installed a TMI board, be sure that the 8-pin
round connector shows through the square connector opening.
See
Figure 9.
2Slowly lower the desktop stand until the tab at the bottom of the
desktop stand fits into the slot on the bottom part of the terminal.
3Replace the screw in the hole from which you removed it. See
