Overview
The Tensor system
The Tensor system consists of a range of tightening tools powered by brushless
electric motors and different drive units.
Motors are available in different sizes. All tools are protected from overheating
of the motor. Electrical protection system is based on an earth fault circuit
brake, Earth Fault Protector (EFP). The EFP senses small current leakage
(>30mA) and if leakage occurs, the drive is switched off (30ms). Changing, in-
terfering or tampering with the protection system voids all warranty and obliga-
tions from Atlas Copco. Trouble-shooting and re-start of the system may only
be carried out by an authorized person. Check the function of the EFP on a reg-
ular basis by pressing the trip-button. The EFP should switch off accordingly.

Service intervals
Service recommendations
Overhaul and preventive maintenance is recommended at regular intervals. See
the Preventive maintenance section for detailed information regarding over-
haul of your tool and specific parts. If the machine is not working properly, it
should immediately be taken away for inspection. At the overhauls, all parts
should be cleaned accurately and defective or worn parts should be replaced.

Installation
Connecting tool
The tool should, via its correct Power Focus drive unit, be connected to the
mains, 230V/50Hz alternatively 115V/ 60Hz, single phase. See instructions for
your Power Focus drive unit.
Tool display
The tool display is turned on from the controller.
On Power Focus 4000:
• Push the Prog button
• Use the navigation buttons to follow the path > Tool > Configuration > Ac-
cessory bus > ST bus > Mode
Socket release function
It is recommended to use the socket release function on all the ETP ST101
tools. When the function is enabled, the socket rotates backwards 3 oafter a
completed tightening. The aim is to reduce tension on the reaction bar and to
make it easier to remove the tool.
The socket release function is turned on from the controller.
On Power Focus 4000:
• Push the Prog button
• Use the navigation buttons to follow the path > Pset > Programming+ > Op-
tions > Socket release > Mode On
Grounding
If the tool is mounted in a handheld or hand guided fixture, the fixture should
be connected to the drive using a separate 2.5mm2 grounding cable.
Reaction bar
Adapt and use the torque reaction bar as follows:
1 Shaping the reaction bar, Fig. A
The torque reaction bar must be shaped to fit a suitable fixed support. To avoid
overloading of the bearings for the tool drive and of the reaction bar, the
point of contact on the reaction bar should be within the shaded area (F),
see Fig. A.

• Measure the distance (L) for the hexagon sleeve to be used. Mark out points
(A and B) on a sheet of paper.
• Consult Table No.1 to find the angle (α) applicable to the diameter (D) of
the machine and the tightening torque in question. Draw a line from point
(A) in angle (α) from the centre line (A – C).
• Draw a line (B – E) at right angles (90 o to the centre line (A – C) of the ma-
chine from point (B). Starting at point (B), draw two lines at angles of +15 o
and -15 o respectively from the marked 90 o-line.
• Mark the area (F) between the drawn lines.
• Adapt the shape of the reaction bar so that the point of contact (K) falls
within the marked area (F). The minimum breaking force is obtained if
the point of contact (K) is on or close to line (B – E).
• If the point of contact falls within angle (α) – in area (G) – there is a risk of
overloading of the bearings for the machine drive and deformation of the re-
action bar.
• If the point of contact is outside angles ± 15 o – in areas (H) – there is a risk
of rapid wear of the hexagon sleeve and reduced torque accuracy.
2 Bending, Fig. B
• Heat the spot to red colour.
It is recommended to concentrate the heat to the inside radius in order not
to reduce the original width (W), see fig. B.
• After bending, allow to cool slightly in room temperature and then chill.
• In order for the torque reaction bar to be as light as possible it is recom-
mended that the section outside the bend be configured as shown in Fig. B.
After bending, attach the accompanying warning sign to the reaction bar,
see fig. C, and mark the side of the reaction bar that should be placed
against the support i a suitable way.
3 Assembly
• Place the reaction bar in the wanted position on the machine.
• Tighten the nut to a torque of 70 Nm, 90 Nm or 100 Nm respectively.
• Check regularly that the lock ring is firmly secured.
4 Use
• Apply the reaction bar according to figure C – opposite the direction of the
drive of the machine – before starting the machine.
•Never put your hand on or close to the reaction bar while the machine is
being used.

Fitting of the tool cable
• Security check that the cable type is correct
• Align the cable connector using the two asymmetrically positioned heads on
the connector to fit in the slots in the tool handle.
• Tighten the lock nut.

• Security check that the connection is correct by pulling, pushing and turning
the cable connector (there should be no movement).
The tool has a built in electronic memory chip that will transmit the torque
transducer calibration value and angle pulses to the POWER FOCUS/drive
unit. Any changes made of these values in the POWER FOCUS while the
tool is connected will be stored in the tool memory.

Ergonomics
Ergonomic guidelines
Consider your workstation as you read through this list of general ergonomic
guidelines and see if you can identify areas for improvement in posture, compo-
nent placement, or work environment.
• Take frequent breaks and change work positions frequently.
• Adapt the workstation area to your needs and the work task.
• Adjust for convenient reach range by determining where parts or tools
should be located to avoid static load.
• Use workstation equipment such as tables and chairs appropriate for the
work task.
• Avoid work positions above shoulder level or with static holding during as-
sembly operations.
• When working above shoulder level, reduce the load on the static mus-
cles by reducing the weight of the tool, using for example torque arms,
hose reels or weight balancers. You can also reduce the load on the static
muscles by holding the tool close to the body.
• Make sure to take frequent breaks.
• Avoid extreme arm or wrist postures, particularly for operations requir-
ing a degree of force.
• Adjust for convenient field of vision by minimizing movement of the eyes
and head during the work task.
• Use the appropriate lighting for the work task.
• Select the appropriate tool for the work task.
• Use ear protection equipment in noisy environments.
• Use high-quality inserted tools or consumables to minimize exposure to ex-
cessive levels of vibration.
• Minimize exposure to reaction forces.
• When cutting:
A cut-off wheel can get stuck if the wheel is either bent or if it is not
guided properly. Make sure to use the correct flanges for cut-off wheels
and avoid bending the wheel during cut-off operation.
• When drilling:
The drill might stall when the drill bit breaks through. Makes sure you
use support handles if the stall torque is too high. The safety standard
ISO11148 part 3 recommends using something to absorb the reaction
torque above 10 Nm for pistol grip tools and 4 Nm for straight tools.
• When using direct-driven screw or nutrunners:
Reaction forces depend on tool setting and joint characteristics. The abil-
ity to bear reaction forces depends on the operator’s strength and pos-
ture. Adapt the torque setting to the operator's strength and posture and
use a torque arm or reaction bar if the torque is too high.
• Use dust extraction system or mouth protection mask in dusty environments.

Maintenance
Preventing ESD problems
The components inside the tool and controller are sensitive to electrostatic dis-
charge. To avoid future malfunction, make sure that service and maintenance is
carried out in an ESD approved work environment. The figure below shows an
example of an appropriate service work station.
Service instructions
Overhaul and preventive maintenance is recommended at regular intervals once
per year or after maximum 250.000 tightening depending on which occurs
sooner. More frequent overhaul may be needed if used at high torque, high cy-
cle rate or long tightening times. If the machine is not working properly, it
should immediately be taken away for inspection.
At the overhauls, all parts should be cleaned accurately and defective or worn
parts (i.e. O-rings) should be replaced.
Cleaning/Inspection
Clean all parts thoroughly in white spirit or similar cleaning agent. After the
cleaning, inspect all parts. Damaged and worn parts should be replaced.
Lubrication
Overhaul
Service must only be carried out by qualified personnel who have access to the
Service instruction and/or have been trained for service on Tensor tools.
The electric motor is a sealed unit and may under no circumstances be
opened by anyone else than Atlas Copco Industrial Technique AB!
If you decide that the electric motor is defect or in need of service, return the
complete motor unit to Atlas Copco Industrial Technique for replacement.
Motors which have been opened by anyone else than Atlas Copco Industrial
Technique will not be serviced.

duty operations. If the machine not is working properly, it should immediately
be taken away for inspection.
When dismantling the tool always use the specially designed service tool 4080
0848 80, (two service tools are required).
Lubrication
Lubricate specially gears and clutch with grease containing molybdenum disul-
phide (e.g. Molykote BR2 Plus). Please see exploded views. Lubricate o-rings
and threaded connections with grease before assembling.

Troubleshooting
If the nutrunner does not start:
Power Focus 600/6000
Is the unit switched on? Check the earth fault circuit breaker behind the front
door. Should it have tripped, make sure to find the primary fault before resum-
ing operation. Check that the wiring on the remote start connector is correct.
For further information see 9836 4954/9836 7446.
Power Focus 3000/4000
Is the POWER FOCUS switched on and in RUN mode? Check that the correct
POWER FOCUS is used (ST31/ST32/ST61/STR31/STR61-Tensor3-7, ST81-
Tensor8-9). Check the fuses for the drive part. Check Drive parameters, refer to
the User Guide of the POWER FOCUS/ drive unit. Check the earth fault circuit
breaker on the backside of the drive. Should it have tripped, make sure to find
the primary fault before resuming operation. Check that the wiring on the re-
mote start connector is correct. For further information see 9836 2258.
If the tool becomes very hot
With proper adjustment the tool can handle any normal line jobs that an opera-
tor sustains. What can cause overheating are combinations of some factors:
torque above rated, too low speed, too long ramp time (motor has to give high
torque for a long time), very high prevailing torque, very soft joints, short cycle
time. To correct, look over speed, ramp time, tightening strategy. One stage and
Ergoramp are most heat conserving when applicable. Please refer to the User
Guide of your POWER FOCUS. If the above corrections are not enough,
choose a tool of the next higher capacity.

Overview
Le système Tensor
Le système Tensor se compose d'une gamme d'outils de serrage mus par des
moteurs électriques sans balais et différents coffrets de commande.
Les moteurs sont disponibles en différentes tailles. Tous les outils sont protégés
contre une surchauffe du moteur. Le système de protection électrique repose sur
un disjoncteur de fuite à la terre EFP (Earth Fault Protector). L'EFP détecte les
petites fuites de courant (>30mA), et si une fuite survient, la commande est
mise hors tension (30ms). Toute modification, adaptation ou altération du sys-
tème de protection annulera les garanties et obligations d'Atlas Copco. La répa-
ration et la remise en marche du système ne peuvent être effectuées que par une
personne autorisée. Vérifier régulièrement le bon fonctionnement de l'EFP en
appuyant sur le déclencheur. L'EFP doit alors mettre le matériel hors tension.

Il est recommandé de procéder à des révisions et à une maintenance préventive
à intervalles réguliers. Voir le chapitre Maintenance préventive pour obtenir
des informations détaillées concernant la révision de l'outil et des pièces spéci-
fiques. Si l'appareil ne fonctionne pas correctement, il doit être immédiatement
retiré pour vérification. Lors de chaque révision, nettoyer soigneusement toutes
les pièces et remplacer celles qui sont usées ou endommagées.

Prescriptions d'installation
Installation
L'outil devra être raccordé à une alimentation sur secteur monophasée
230V/50Hz ou 115V/60Hz, via le coffret de commande Power Focus voulu.
Consulter la notice du coffret de commande Power Focus.
Mise à la terre
Si l'outil est monté sur un dispositif portatif ou sur un dispositif guidé manuelle-
ment, ce dispositif doit être connecté à l'unité de commande au moyen d'un
câble de terre indépendant de 2,5mm2.
Toc de réaction
Adaptez et utilisez le toc de réaction comme suit:
1 Préparation du toc, fig. A
Le toc doit être adapté à une surface de calage appropriée. Pour éviter toute
surcharge des roulements du carré d’entraînement de l’outil et du toc, le
point de calage doit se trouver dans la zone hachurée (F) de la fig. A.
• Mesurez la distance (L) correspondant à la douille hexagonale à utiliser. Ins-
crivez les points (A et B) sur une feuille de papier.
• Dans le tableau No.1, relevez l’angle (α) qui correspond au diamètre (D) de
l’outil et au couple de serrage à appliquer. Du point (A), tracez une ligne
formant un angle (α) avec l’axe (A – C).
• Du point (B), tracez une ligne (B – E) perpendiculaire à l’axe (A – C) de
l’outil. Du même point (B), tracez deux lignes formant un angle de +15 o et
-15 o avec la ligne (B – E).
• Marquez la zone (F) délimitée par les lignes.
• Adaptez la forme du toc de façon à ce que le point de calage (K) tombe dans
la zone que vous avez marquée (F). Vous obtenez la plus petite force de
rupture lorsque le point de calage (K) se trouve sur la ligne (B – E) ou à
proximité de celle-ci.

• Si le point de calage appartient à l’angle (α) – dans la zone (G) – il existe un
risque de surcharge des roulements du carré d’entraînement de l’outil et de
déformation du toc.
• Si le point de calage se trouve à l’extérieur des angles ± 15 o – dans les
zones (H) – il existe un risque d’usure rapide de la douille hexagonale et la
précision du couple diminue.
2 Cintrage, fig. B
• Chauffez le toc au rouge.
Il est conseillé de chauffer l’intérieur de la flexion à une température plus
élevée afin que la largeur d’origine (W) ne diminue pas, voir fig. B.
• Après cintrage, laissez la température revenir au niveau de la température
ambiante, puis refroidissez.
• Pour alléger le toc dans la mesure du possible, il est recommandé de former
la partie hors du coude de la manière illustrée à la fig. B.
Après le cintrage, apposez la plaque prévue à cet effet, voir fig. C et mar-
quez le côté du toc de réaction qui doit être placé contre le support.
3 Montage
• Placez le toc de réaction dans la position souhaitée sur l’outil.
• Serrez l’écrou au couple de 70 Nm, 90 Nm ou 100 Nm, respectivement.
• Vérifiez régulièrement si l’écrou est bien serré.
4 Utilisation
• Appliquez le toc de réaction de la manière illustrée à la figure C – sens op-
posé à la rotation de l’outil – avant de mettre l’outil en marche.
• Ne posez jamais la main sur le toc de réaction ou à proximité de celui-ci
pendant l’utilisation de l’outil.

Montage du câble d'outil
• Contrôler par sécurité que le type de câble est correct.
• Aligner le connecteur du câble en faisant coïncider les deux têtes position-
nées de manière asymétrique sur le connecteur avec les fentes dans la poi-
gnée de l'outil.
