Global view of the digital cinema market
2006 was a good year for us here
in Singapore, but competition is heat-
ing up with the openings of two new
cinemas by other exhibitors.
With the additional digital screens that
we installed this year, we were able
to screen approximately 10 Hollywood
titles. This is a signifi cant improvement
over 2005. Over and above the Holly-
wood releases, the digital halls were
also used for other events. The 2006
World Cup Finals were screened LIVE
in HD across two halls; one hall was
equipped with a digital cinema projec-
tor, the other was equipped with a 1.3k
projector.
We look forward to having more digital
content become available this year and
with the list of popular titles in the pipe-
line, we anticipate an increase in ticket
sales for 2007.
Our digital halls have increasingly been
used for corporate events, such as gam-
ing launches and competitions orga-
nized by Electronic Arts Games amongst
others. As such, we are considering de-
ploying more digital screens with a vi-
able business model. In the meantime,
we will continue to explore much more
alternative and pre-show content in
digital format e.g., HD.

1. Looking back at 2006, how was the cinema market in 2006 for your company? (General market, not digital specifi c)
2. How did you apply digital cinema in 2006 and how did it change your business?
3. How do you see the exhibition market evolve with digital cinema in 2007?
4. How will you change your business in 2007 to make the best use of digital cinema business opportunities?
These were their answers:
We asked three market leading exhibitors, from different parts of
the globe, the following four questions:
In 2006, Kinepolis Group wel-
comed 23.9 million cinema-goers in-
ternationally, up 6% from 2005, mainly
thanks to top international fi lms such
as Pirates of the Caribbean 2, The Da-
Vinci Code and Ice Age 2, but also due
to local successes. The increase in visi-
tor numbers was also strengthened by
the group’s newest complexes, Kinepolis
Granada (2004), Kinepolis Nancy (2005)
and Kinepolis Brugge (July 2006), which
recorded successful visitor fi gures.
Thanks to the widespread digitalisa-
tion of Kinepolis cinemas in Belgium,
France and Spain, Kinepolis devel-
oped further “alternative content.” In
addition to digital full-length fi lms,
cinema-goers can now experience
more and more alternative content
in digital format, such as presti-
gious events, television series, live
concerts, sports competitions and
gaming. As of November 2006, gam-
ing enthusiasts are able to play on the
big screen of Kinepolis’ most recent
complex in Bruges. The XL Gaming
concept will also be introduced in the
other Kinepolis complexes in 2007.
With this move Kinepolis takes its fi rst
steps in the world of interactive enter-
tainment.
2007 will be a crucial year in the digital
growth of Kinepolis Group.
Kinepolis remains a driving force behind
Digital Cinema in conjunction with Barco
and Technicolor, and by the end of 2007,
the company will convert its Belgian
multiplex cinemas to digital for a total
of 130 screens. The availability of digital
content however will have a signifi cant
impact on the digital conversion of the
exhibition market in general.
Kinepolis has already changed its busi-
ness to make use of digital cinema op-
portunities. The participation of Kinepolis
in the digitalisation process of cinema is
very important in the context of diversi-
fi cation towards activities that are direct-
ly or indirectly linked with movie ticket
sales, such as digital B-to-B events, si-
multaneous digital broadcasts to several
Kinepolis complexes, XL gaming, etc.

Sponsoring the big screen
In December 2006, Barco joined with celebrated fi lm director, Zhang
Yimou, in premiering his latest blockbuster “Curse of the Golden Flow–
er.” The movie was premiered during a gala event organized by the
fi lm’s producers at the Beijing Film Production Factory. Zhang’s lavish
and opulent new fi lm is set before China’s Tang Dynasty and tells the
story of an imperial Chinese family collapsing amidst a power strug-
gle between the emperor (Chow Yun-Fat), the empress (Gong Li) and
the couple’s three sons. The family’s battle for control and authority
ultimately threatens to tear them to pieces.
Barco lit up the premiere by providing the Director (whose much-
lauded fi lms include Hero, House of Flying Daggers and Raise the Red
Lantern) with a 50 square-meter indoor LED screen. Live from New
York, Zhang greeted the 1,500+ guests and journalists via the Barco
screen.
Barco joined the list of offi cial suppliers for the 2006 Cannes Film Festival
as the provider of digital projectors. In partnership with XDC, Barco 2K
projectors were used in the Lumière, Debussy, Bazin and Bunuel audi-
toriums during the Festival. Thanks to Barco’s digital equipment at the
Cannes Festival, fi lm makers were able to show their fi lms in optimum
conditions without any compromise on image quality.
On the occasion, Stephan Paridaen, President of Barco’s Media and En-
tertainment division stated: “We are delighted to, yet again, be the
offi cial supplier of the Cannes Film Festival. It is an iconic event in the
fi lm industry and one that we are delighted to be a part of. Barco is both
committed to, and a supporter of, the global digital cinema industry.”
For the 57th Berlin International Film Festival, four Barco digital cinema
projectors were used for screenings in theaters throughout Berlin.
Barco lights up the world premiere of
the Chinese blockbuster “Curse of the
Golden Flower”
“
The increase in ticket revenue from hits such as Pirates of
the Caribbean and The DaVinci Code were a boost to all exhibi-
tion groups. Malco also took advantage of 3D content to provide
patrons with new experiences which further differentiates the
cinema from any home theater options.
Malco made defi nitive commitments to digital cinema in 2006. I
believe we’re moving at the proper pace to evaluate the impact
of DCinema on our patrons, facilities and staff. The integration of
new product components with the realities of human interven-
tion requires careful
planning, review and
analysis to achieve
the results we want
to show movie-goers.
DCinema does indeed
change the existing
model; ranging from
the procedures of our
internal operations all
the way to the prod-
uct that is ultimately
delivered.
The evolution will
continue to fi nd
ground in 2007 as
more benchmarks are
set. Clearly, we’ll see
a further shift toward digital in this current year and Malco will be
expanding our digital ‘reach’. It is known throughout the industry
that each of us are evaluating our path of entry. Like most technol-
ogy conversions, the big drivers will be price, regional competition
and long-term reliability. Our company will continue to act when
the opportunities meet our own roadmap; but we recognize today
the benefi ts DCinema can bring to the business.
The opportunities that DCinema brings to an exhibitor forces
change of proven business models that have been operating suc-
cessfully for decades. But Malco will exploit alternative content,
3D, in addition to the enhanced exhibition of standard studio con-
tent. Our overall business model of providing an unrivaled cin-
ematic experience will stay the same; the new digital tools at our
disposal will create exciting opportunities like none before and we
will be a leader in showcasing them.

Glenn Wastyn
Scott Freidberg
Barco’s commitment to its customers
Innovation
Barco’s Digital Cinema business unit is
part of the larger Barco group, which is
setting the pace in the world of visualiza-
tion. Barco’s market leadership spans a
wide range of segments, including cor-
porate branding, manufacturing, defense,
medical, air traffic control, sports, events
and simulation. To Scott Freidberg, the
picture is straightforward: “Barco’s legacy
of innovation is the key factor in its suc-
cess and one of the decisive reasons for
selecting Barco solutions.”
Glenn Wastyn confirms, “Throughout our
70-year history, our superior innovative
design and engineering have always
been a common thread, across all of
our markets. We pool our know-how
and crystallize it into pioneering visual-
ization solutions. Major investments in
research and development, account for
over 10% of our operations, and reflect
our inquiring mind and innovative spirit.
That’s how we’ve become today’s global
business leader.”
Quality
“Key as innovation may be, it’s not
Barco’s only strength,” Glenn Wastyn
continued. “Quality, too, is a strategic
priority at Barco, throughout all levels
of the organization. All of our projectors
and software applications are designed
and manufactured to the highest stan-
dards.” To ensure that the quality pro-
cedures are not just hollow statements,
Barco has documented its quality process
into a Quality Manual which is regularly
subjected to a third party assessment.
“But the ultimate proof of our quality
is the feedback we get from you, our
customers,” Freidberg added. “Open,
honest and constructive input helps
us to move the company to a higher
level. After all, our benchmark goal
is not only to maintain our reputation
for quality, but to continually push the
limit.”
Market leadership
Glenn Wastyn and Scott Freidberg fur-
ther highlighted the added value of
Barco’s market leadership. This is re-
flected not only in our groundbreaking
technology and products but also in
our R&D efforts, our customer support
and the commitment and integrity of
our staff. Glenn Wastyn: “Our reach
is international, yet we operate lo-
cally. Our sales and support reps are
dotted around the globe to provide fast
response times and to address our
customers’ local requirements.”
“With every Barco product, leadership is
not simply a value-added intangible. It
hits you every time you power up your
Barco equipment — reassuring you that
your purchase decision was, and is, the
right choice,” Freidberg summarized.
“When you next think of offering your
customers unparalleled visual comfort,
think Barco Digital Cinema.”
When it comes to offering your customers the best digital cinema experi-
ence, there is no room for compromise. But why should you choose Barco’s
digital cinema solutions? Glenn Wastyn, Market Director Digital Cinema
and Scott Freidberg, Vice President Digital Cinema USA, have the answer:
“Innovation, quality and market leadership.”

Barco’s DP series: six reasons why
Built on the success and worldwide accept-
ance of the DP90 and DP100 D-Cine projec-
tors, Barco is proud to expand the DP se-
ries, with new models (DP-1500, DP-2000,
DP-3000) targeted at a broader range of ven-
ues. These models are based on the Texas
Instrument’s DLP Cinema 1.2 and 0.98 inch
chips, which offer the flawless, pristine pic-
ture that has made DLP Cinema® famous.
True, Texas Instruments’ technology is the
kernel around which projectors from all ma-
jor suppliers are designed. But with every
Barco DP series projector, a series of six key
differentiators separate us from the pack —
giving you a remarkable advantage for the
long term.
Image quality
Each Barco DP series projector is de-
signed around a sealed engine, which
effectively immunizes the system’s op-
tical path against contamination by dirt
and dust. By employing a sealed engine,
blurring and dark spots are eliminated
on screen – thus providing stable and
superior image quality over time. The
image you see upon first installation – is
the same image you see with each sub-
sequent projection.
Equipment lifetime
DLP Cinema technology is extremely
reliable. The engine lifetime can be
enhanced even further through a con-
trolled and stabilized chip temperature.
Barco’s exclusive cooling technology
employs peltier elements to monitor the
DLP Cinema Chip’s temperature, transfer
heat as required, and maintain a steady
engine temperature. The direct result is
an extended engine lifetime which in
turn could lower maintenance costs.
Total cost of ownership
In the digital cinema environment, clear-
ly, downtime and revenue are mutually
exclusive. Barco’s solution is a modular
design in which every core component
is swappable via side access. This unique
feature (standard on all DP series pro-
jectors) lowers downtime and improves
overall service turnaround times. And
modularity has an added benefit. If your
facility switches modes from 2D to 3D
projection, you can simply and rapidly
swap lamp housings – rather than change
bulbs in a single housing.
Reliability
Each DP series projector is engineered
for reliability and robustness – not sim-
ply in the engine and optical path, but
in the basic power system itself. Redun-
dant power supplies have been a main-
stay of the IT industry for years, and that
feature is now available in Barco’s DP
series. This intelligent system not only
provides electronic security, but secu-
rity in the knowledge that your revenue
streams are protected.
NOC compliance
The need to monitor equipment in a
contemporary networked environment
is critical to your design and cost of op-
eration – not only for statistical tracking,
but for error reporting and fault analysis.
Barco’s Communicator Software now of-
fers an SNMP (Simple Network Manage-
ment Protocol) V3 agent that can moni-
tor your facility’s projectors – locally or
remotely. Reports can be issued to the
customer, integrator, or to the NOC (Net-
work Operations Center).
Future proof
Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) was a
joint venture between seven major mo-
tion picture studios, whose mission was
to establish uniform recommendations
for the digital cinema industry. The ob-
jective was to ensure a high degree of
technical performance, reliability and
quality control in all digital cinema prod-
ucts. By being the first manufacturer to
fully integrate a DCI-compliant hardware
design into production, Barco’s position
is bold – your investment is sound, with
a future proof guarantee.

As the ideal peripheral for all digital cinema installations,
the ACS-2048 is an 8x1 switcher that accepts “universal”
input formats, and outputs 12-bit twin DVI at 2048 x 1080
– one of the digital cinema standards. With a high-qual-
ity scaler at its core, upconverting any input format is as
simple as “auto-acquiring” and selecting the desired input.
However, disguised as a switcher, ACS-2048 is really a path-
way to new revenue streams for your facility. By enabling
“alternate” content to be displayed in the digital cinema
resolution, your theater’s role as a presentation facility for
events, businesses, conventions, town-hall meetings and
so much more – becomes a reality.
ACS-2048 I Alternative content switcher
• “Universal” inputs support HD/SDI, SD-
SDI, DVI, Analog, Composite, and S-Video
formats
• Twin link 12-bit DVI outputs upconvert all
inputs to 2048 x 1080
• Motion adaptive de-interlacing and ad-
vanced noise reduction circuits are em-
ployed throughout to maintain superb
image quality
• User-friendly front panel provides intui-
tive “local” control
• Integration with the Communicator’s
touch screen provides seamless remote
control capability
• A standard HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digi-
tal Content Protection) “decrypted input”
and “encrypted output” path enables
copy-protected content to be displayed
