Bendix®Wingman®Advanced™CollisionAvoidanceRadarSystem

Bison2010ornewerVolvotractorsareequippedwithasafetysystemcalledBendixWingmanAdvancedSystem.Driversassignedto
tractorsarescheduledfortrainingonitsoperationthroughDriverDevelopment.NewDriverswillreceivethetrainingwhen
attendingOrientation.Thefollowinginformationisasummaryofthesystem.Youarebeingprovidedthisinformationshouldyoube
requiredtooperateatractorequippedwiththeBendixWingmanAdvancedSysteminadvanceofattendingtraining.

TheBendixWingmanAdvancedisradar‐basedsystemdesignedtowarnDriversofpotentiallydangerousdrivingsituationssuchas
rear‐endcollisionsorfollowingtooclosely.ThissafetysystemisnotareplacementforaDriver’sbestjudgment.Driversmustalways
bealert,reactappropriatelyandinatimelymatter,adjustspeedtoconditionsandalwaysmaintainsafefollowingdistance.7
seconds(13forturnpikes)istheminimumsafefollowingdistanceinidealconditions.BendixWingmanAdvancedisnotintendedto
replacedrivercontrolofthevehicleatanytime.YouastheDriverremainincontrolofyourvehicleandmustultimatelydetermine
theactionsthatarenecessaryforsafeoperation.

TheBendixWingmanAdvancedSystemonlyreactstomovingobjectslocateddirectlyinfrontofyourvehiclewitharadarrangeof
approximately500feet,anddoesnotoperatewhenyourspeedislessthan15mph.Accordingly,theBendixWingmanAdvanced
System:
•Willnotreactandalertyoutoobjectsthatthesystemhasnotseenmoveorobjectscrossinginfrontofyouoroncomingtraffic.
•Shouldnotbereliedontotracktargetvehicleswheneitherorbothvehicleshaveenteredand/oraretravelingthroughasevere
curveintheroad.BecauseoftheAdaptiveCruiseControlwithBraking,isnotrecommendedforuseonwinding(curving)roads.
•Shouldnotbereliedontotracksmallerandlimitedmetalsurfacesobjects/vehicles.
•ShouldnotbereliedontoalertDriverstovehiclesinanadjacentlane.


SafeVehicleOperation

TheBendixWingmanAdvancedSystemincludesmultiplepredefinedcalculationsdesignedtoalertyoutopotentiallydangerous
drivingsituationsandprovideasafefollowingdistancewhileutilizingAdaptiveCruiseControlwithBrakinginmostenvironments
anddrivingsituationsthatyoufaceonadailybasis.However,multiplefactorscanaffectsafefollowingdistancesandcreate
additionalsafedrivingconsiderations.WhenoperatingavehiclewiththeBendixWingmanAdvancedSystem,itisveryimportantto
adheretothefollowing:
•TheBendixWingmanAdvancedSystemshouldonlybeconsideredasanaidandisnotintendedtoreplacedrivercontroloverthe
vehicleatanytime.BisonDriversarestillexpectedtomaintainatleasta7secondfollowingdistanceinidealconditions.
•Likecruisecontrolingeneral,AdaptiveCruiseControlwithBrakingshouldnotbeusedwhenweather,roadsurfaceorconditions
requirelongerfollowingdistances.Suchconditionsinclude,withoutlimitation,rain,snow,densetraffic,constructionzones,off‐
road,etc.
•Whenoperatingyourvehicle,alwaysusesafedrivingtechniques.TheDriverisalwaysthemostimportantelementinsafevehicle
operation.
•TheBendixWingmanAdvancedSystemisonlyintendedtoassistreactionandresponsetime.Itisnotasubstituteforproperdriver
brakingandshouldbeconsideredonlyasadriverassistancesystem.IntheeventtheAdaptiveCruiseControlwithBrakingsystem
requiresactivationofthefoundationbrakes,thesystemisdesignedtoprovidebrakingataleveltoalertyoutoapotentiallyunsafe
followingdistanceandaidinpossiblyavoidingormitigatingacollision.Foryoursafety,theAdaptiveCruiseControlwithBraking
systemdoesnotapplymaximumbraking,sotheDrivermustinterveneandassumecontrolofvehiclebraking.

AdaptiveCruiseControlwithBraking
AdaptiveCruiseControlwithBrakingisanadditionalupgradetoordinarycruisecontrol,designedtohelptheDrivermaintainaset
followingdistancebetweentheDriver’svehicleandadetectedforwardvehicle,whencruisecontrolisset.Thefeaturewillmaintain
thesetspeed,andwillalsointervene,asneeded,tohelpmaintainasetfollowingdistancebehindadetectedforwardvehicle.In
ordertomaintainasetfollowingdistance,thesystemwillinterveneinthefollowingorder;reducingtheenginethrottle,engaging
theengineretarderandapplyingthefoundationbrakes.

Alerts
BendixWingmanAdvancedassistsbygivingaudibleandvisualalerts,whetherornotcruisecontrolison.Threeimportantalerts
providedare:
FollowingDistanceAlert(FDA)‐audibleandvisualalertswhichletDriverknowwhengettingtooclosetoforwardvehicle.
ImpactAlert(IA)–audibleandvisualalertswarningtheDriverthatacollisionwiththeforwardvehicleislikelyandthattheyshould
addressthesituationimmediately.  .
StationaryObjectAlerts(SOA)‐audibleandvisualalertsthatprovidetheDriveruptoa3.0secondalertwhenametallicobject(s)
maybeblockinglaneoftravel.

CollisionMitigationTechnology
CollisionMitigationTechnologyisdesignedtobereadytoreacttothepresenceofmovingvehiclesinfrontofyourvehicle,whether
ornotcruisecontrolisset.CollisionmitigationprovidestheDriverwithanalertbeforeaninterventionoccurs,andappliesthe
brakeswhenthesystemdeterminesacollisionwithforwardvehicleisimminent.TheDrivermustimmediatelyacttopotentially
avoid,orlessentheseverityofacollision.(Vehiclemustbetravellingabove15mph)


OperatingCruiseModes

CruiseControlNotSet:
YourvehicleoperatesasusualwhentheAdaptiveCruiseControlwithBrakingisnotset.Thecollisionmitigationfeatureremains
activeandreadytointervene.TheDriverwillcontinuetohearallalertsandwarningsasneeded.

CruiseControlSet:
Accelerateyourvehicletothecruisecontrolspeedyouwishtomaintain,thenpressthecruisecontrolsetswitch.Theadaptive
cruisecontrolwithbrakingfeatureisnowreadyandwillhelpyoumaintainasetfollowingdistance.Oncethecruisecontrolspeedis
set,agreencruise‐enabledicon(orsimilar)willilluminateontheinstrumentpanel.Ifthegreencruise‐enabled(orsimilar)icondoes
notilluminate,thecruisecontrolisnotfunctioningnormally,andtheproblemwillneedtobenotedonyourDVIRandarepair
appointmentbookedwithBisonMaintenance.


TheForwardDetectedVehicleIcon
Whencruisecontrolisswitchedonandset,andavehicleaheadofyouisdetectedbytheradar,theforward
detectedvehicleicon(orsimilar)onthevehicledashboardwillilluminate.Thisisanindicationtothedriverthatthe
BendixWingmanAdvancedSystemisactivelymanagingthedistancebetweenyourvehicleandthevehicleahead,
andthatthesystemmayautomaticallyintervene.

Note:
•Wheneverthecruisecontrolisset,theAdaptiveCruiseControlwithBrakingfeatureisalsoset.Youcannotengagecruisecontrol
withoutalsousingallthefeaturesoftheBendixWingmanAdvancedSystem.
•TheDrivercanswitchtheadaptivecruisecontrolwithbrakingfeatureoffmanuallybyeithersteppingonthebrake,orswitching
OFFthecruisecontrol.
•CruisecontrolwillautomaticallycancelwhenevertheBendixWingmanAdvancedSystemappliesthefoundationbrakes.Youcan
verifythesystemisdisengagedbyobservingthatthecruise‐enablediconisnolongerilluminated.Youmustresumeorsetcruise
controlinordertoregainnormalcruisecontrolfunctionalityandtoreengagetheadaptivecruisecontrolwithbrakingfeatureofthe
BendixWingmanAdvancedSystem.

Alerts

FollowingDistanceAlert:

TheFollowingDistanceAlertwillemitanaudiblealertandthein‐cabdashdisplay
screenwillturnyellowwheneverthetimebetweenyourvehicleandthedetected
forwardvehicleaheadislessthanoneandahalfsecondsanddecreasing. Oncethe
audiblealertisgiven,thedrivershouldincreasethedistancebetweenhis/hervehicle
andthevehicleaheaduntiltheaudiblealertstops.Ifthefollowingdistancecontinues
todecreasetheDriverwillhearmorerapidaudiblealerts. WhentheFDAreachesits
highestlevel,typicallyaredLEDalsoilluminatesontheinstrumentcluster.TheFDA
maybeaccompaniedbyavisualalert.

ImpactAlert:

TheImpactAlertwillemitanaudiblealertandthein‐cabdashdisplayscreenwillturn
redororangewheneveritindicatesthatacollisionwiththedetectedforwardvehicleis
likely.TheDrivermustimmediatelyacttopotentiallyavoid,orlessentheseverityof,a
collision.

Note:TheImpactAlertistypicallyaccompaniedbyautomaticbrakeinterventions.The
WingmanAdvancedsystemwillapplyuptotwo‐thirdsofyourvehicle’sbreaking
capacity.TheDrivermustapplyadditionalbraking,whennecessary,tomaintainasafe
distancefromthevehicleahead.
Example of Impact AlertWarning Display

StationaryObjectAlert:

TheStationaryObjectAlert willgiveuptothree(3)secondsalerttotheDriverwhen
approachingadetected,sizable,stationaryobjectwithmetallic(radar‐reflective)
surfacesinyourlaneoftravel.Thisalertindicatesthatacollisionwithastationary
objectislikelyandtheDrivermustimmediatelyacttopotentiallyavoid,orlessenthe
severityof,acollision.

Note:StationaryObjectAlertsarewarningsonly;thereisnoactivebrakingwithSOA.
TheWingmanAdvancedradarmaynotbeabletodetectvehicles/objectswithlimited
metalsurfaces(suchasrecreationalvehicles,horse‐drawnbuggies,motorcycles,
loggingtrailers,etc.)andsmallervehicles/objects(suchasmotorcycles,mopeds,and
bicycles,etc.).ItistheDriver’sresponsibilitytobeawareofthesetypesofvehiclesand Example of Stationary Object Alert Display
toslowdownifnecessary.
Errors
IftheBendixWingmanAdvancedSystemhasdetectedaproblem,therewilltypicallybeawarningmessageonthedashboard
displayandaDiagnosticTroubleCode(DTC)willbeset.Thesystemwilldetermine,dependingonthetypeofproblemdetected,if
thevehiclemaycontinuetohavenormalcruisecontrolfunctions(withoutthebenefitsoftheBendixWingmanAdvancedSystem),
orifallcruisecontrolfunctionsneedtobedisableduntilservicingiscarriedout.Thesystemshouldbeservicedassoonaspossible
torestorefullfunctionality.
