Overview
◆
The Codonics SLS-WAVE Point of Administration
Scanner is used in conjuction with the Safe Label System
(SLS Point of Care Station (PCS and integrates with
Epic Anesthesia and Plexus TG’s Anesthesia Touch
TM
Anesthesia Information Management System (AIMS .
The system is used in the operating room to improve
safety and provide accurate, electronic documentation at
the time of administration.
Hardware Setup - SLS/AIMS
1. Insert the four (4 screws through the bracket into the
SLS-WAVE housing and tighten with 3/32 L-key wrench.
2. Remove the cover to the scanner and insert the Ethenet
cable into the Ethernet port.
3. Replace the cover back on the scanner.
Note: An open USB port is required to connect SLS-
WAVE into the computer where the Epic or Plexus
AIMS application is operated.

4. Insert the SLS-WAVE scanner into the SLS-WAVE
housing.
5. Make sure the USB cord is coming out the back.
6. Connect the SLS-WAVE to the bracket that supports the
AIMS monitor or an IV pole near the patient as shown
below.
WARNING: The scanner should be pointing down and
positioned to keep the scanner light from shining in the
patient’s or user’s eyes.

7. Insert the SLS-WAVE USB into the AIMS computer.
Epic Anesthesia Setup
1. If you don’t have barcoding enabled in Epic, follow the
instructions in

2. If you have barcoding enabled in Epic and need to enable
scanning in the intraprocedure grid field:

In Clinical Administration, access EMR System
Definitions and follow the path Specialities, Other
Modules > Anesthesia.

Go to the Anesthesia Barcode Scan Settings screen.
◆
Enter Yes in the Allow barcode scanning from
intraprocedure grid field.
Wor flow
1. Log into Epic. Go to Epic Anesthesia work space.
2. Select a Patient in Epic.
3. Scan a vial(s on SLS PCS.
4. Prepare and label all the syringe(s with the label(s from
step 3. The label(s will look similar to the following
example:
5. When ready to administer the syringe(s to the patient,
scan the label’s 1-D barcode using SLS-WAVE.
Note: USB extension cords are available if required to
reach from the SLS-WAVE to the AIMS computer. They
can be ordered using Codonics’ Part Number SLS-
WAVE-USB-EXT.
Note: During setup, you should have access to your Epic
“expert” and/or Epic resources available.
Note: SLS PCS should be loaded with a minimum of
2.3.0 SW and configured to use EHR-1 label template.
EHR-1 template requires the AT configuration to be set
to Primary Barcode #7. This template prints a 1-D linear
barcode.
Note: SLS PCS can be configured for printing 2-D
datamatrix barcodes. By default, the SLS-WAVE will not
read these barcodes. Contact Codonics Technical
Support if you would like to read these barcodes.
Note: The vial’s NDC needs to be in both the SLS
formulary and the site’s Epic Preference List formulary.


6. When the barcode is scanned, SLS-WAVE will beep,
automatically populate Epic Anesthesia with the NDC,
and displays (as shown below the drug name, color of
the drug classification and identify (circled below if
there are allergies for the drug for that patient with an
icon.
7. Touch or click on the time the drug was administered.
The dose screen will automatically open.
8. Enter the dose and select Close. The drug administration
is now complete in Epic.
9. Repeat step 5 as required with additional syringe(s .
Cleaning SLS-WAVE
To clean the system, use a clean, lint-free cloth moistened
with one of the following approved cleaning agents:

Note: The SLS-WAVE can be set to one of three levels of
beep volume when scanning; high, medium, or low. To
change the volume, slide the scanner out of the housing
and press the button on the right front corner of the SLS-
WAVE to the required level. Insert the scanner back into
the housing.
