INFORMATION
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Early signs
ofcarbonmonoxidepoisoningresemblethe
flu, with headaches, dizziness, or nausea. If
youhave these signs, the appliance maynot
beworkingproperly.Getfreshairatonce!
Have appliance serviced. Some people are
more affected by carbon monoxide than
others. These include pregnant women,
peoplewithheartorlungdiseaseor anemia,
those under the influence of alcohol, and
those at high altitudes.
Propane/LP Gas: Propane/LP gas is odor-
less. An odor-making agent is added to the
gas. The odor helps you detect a gas leak.
However, the odor added to the gas can
fade. Gas may be present even though no
odor exists.
Make certain you read and understand all

2. Do not place propane supply tank(s)
inside any structure. Locate propane/
LP supply tank(s) outdoors. Keep ap-
pliance at least six feet from propane/
LP tank(s). Keep propane/LP tank(s)
below 100º F.
3. This appliance is designed and certi-
fied to be used only with household
propane/LP supply. Do not use “por-
table” propane/LP tanks of less than
100 lbs. capacity. This appliance can
not be operated with a 20 lb. propane/
LPtankcommonly used with gas grills.
4. The installation must conform with lo-
cal codes or, in the absence of local
codes, with the National Fuel Gas
Code, ANS Z223.1, NFPA 58.
5. If you smell gas
• shut off gas supply
• do not try to light any appliance

When locating this appliance, follow all
safety information on pages 2 and 3.
Do not use this appliance indoors. It is for
outdooruse only.Do notlocatethis product
in even a partially enclosed area, such as a

zebo. They could be damaged or set on fire.
Locate this appliance on a level, outdoor,
noncombustible surface. Do not place this

1. Remove lava rock and log pack from
carton.
2. Carefully lift firepit out of carton and
gently place at site of installation.
3. Check all items for any shipping dam-
age. If damaged, promptly inform
dealer where you bought the product.
Note: Deterioration or damage due to se-
vere weather conditions such as hail, hurri-
canes, earthquakes, or tornadoes, or discol-
oration due to exposure to chemicals either
directlyor inthe atmosphere,isnot covered
by the Limited Warranty on the back of this
manual. The warranty also does not cover
the following:
• weather damage caused by not using the
protective cover
• chips, cracks, or breakage caused from
dropping, dragging, or hitting firepit.
The surface of the firepit naturally contains
spaces,surface cracks, andvariations in color
and texture. The limited warranty does not
cover such surface imperfections.
HIGH ALTITUDE DERATE
In the U.S.A., input BTU shall be
derated 4% (1 orifice size) per 1,000
feet for altitudes above 2,000 feet. In
Canada, input BTU shall be derated
10% (2 orifice sizes) at altitudes from
2,000 to 4,500 feet.

Installation Items Needed
Beforeinstalling appliance,make sureyour
installer has the items listed below.
• two stage external regulator (supplied by
installer)
• piping (check local codes)
• sealant (resistant to propane/LP gas)
(May be pipe dope or Teflon tape)
• equipment shutoff valve*
• test gauge connection*
• sediment trap
• tee joint
• pipe wrench
• brass fitting(s) (depending upon gas sup-
ply plumbing)
*AnCSA/AGAdesign-certifiedequipment
shutoff valve with 1/8" NPT tap is an ac-
ceptable alternative to test gauge connec-
tion. Purchase the optional CSA/AGA de-
sign-certifiedequipmentshutoffvalvefrom
your dealer. See Accessory, page 10.
The installer must supply a two stage exter-
nalregulator.Thetwostageexternalregula-
tor will reduce incoming gas pressure to
between11and14inchesofwater.Ifyoudo
notreduceincominggaspressure,regulator
damagecouldoccur.Installtwostageexter-
nalregulatorwiththeventpointingdownas
shown in Figure 3. Pointing the vent down
protects it from freezing rain or sleet.
CAUTION: Use only new,
black iron or steel pipe. Inter-
nally-tinned copper tubing may
be used in certain areas. Check
yourlocalcodes.Usepipeof1/2"
diameter or greater to allow
proper gas volume to appliance.
If pipe is too small, undue loss of
pressure will occur.
We recommend that you install a sediment
trap in supply line as shown in Figure 4.
Locate sediment trap where it is within
reach for cleaning. Install in piping system
between fuel supply and patio firepit. Lo-
cate sediment trap where trapped matter is
not likely to freeze. A sediment trap traps
moistureandcontaminants.Thiskeepsthem
from going into appliance controls. If sedi-
ment trap is not installed or is installed
wrong, appliance may not run properly.
Installation must include an equipment
shutoffvalve, union,and plugged 1/8"NPT
tap. Locate NPT tap within reach for test
gauge hook up. NPT tap must be upstream
from appliance (see Figure 4).
IMPORTANT: Install equipment shutoff
valve in an accessible location. The equip-
ment shutoff valve is for turning on and
shutting off the gas to the appliance.
Apply pipe joint sealant lightly to male
threads. This will prevent excess sealant
fromgoing into pipe. Excess sealant inpipe
could result in a clogged burner injector.
CAUTION:Usepipejointseal-
ant that is resistant to liquid pe-
troleum (LP) gas.

2. Cap off open end of gas pipe where
equipmentshutoffvalve was connected.
3. Pressurize supply piping system by ei-
ther using compressed air or opening
propane/LP supply tank slowly.
Note: If not opened slowly, excess-
flow check valve on propane/LP tank
willstopgas flow.Ifthis happens, close

Your Comfort Glow Patio Fire is designed
tooperatewithlavarockpiledinandaround
theburner,andrefractorylogsplacedontop
of the lava rock.
Carefullypoursuppliedlavarockintobasin
to cover the burner. Be sure that the burner
and burner ports are covered completely by
lava rock to better disperse the flame and to
create a more natural looking fire.
Place the six refractory logs on top of the
lava rock. The arrangement is left to your
personal preference. Try different place-
mentstoachieveyourdesiredflamepattern.
Note: Sooting on the logs is natural. You
may clean with a soft bristle brush.
CAUTION: Place lava rock
carefully. Be careful not to dam-
agetheburner,ignitorelectrode,
orthermocouplewhenaddingthe
lava rock.

lava rock to cool completely be-
forehandlingorrearranginglogs.

4. Check all joints of gas supply piping

Test Pressures Equal To or Less Than

gas supply piping system by closing its
individual manual shutoff valve during
any pressure testing of the gas supply
piping system at test pressures equal to
or less than 1/2 psi (3.5 kPa).
2. Pressurize supply piping system by ei-
ther using compressed air or opening
propane/LP supply tank valve.
3. Check all joints from propane/LP sup-
plytank to equipment shutoffvalve (see
Figure 6).Apply mixture of liquid soap
and water to gas joints. Bubbles form-
ing show a leak.
4. Correct all leaks at once.
Pressure Testing Appliance Gas

2. Open propane/LP supply tank valve.

WARNING: Solid fuels shall

BATTERY INSTALLATION
YourComfortGlowPatioFireusesanelec-
tronic ignitor which requires one AA alka-
linebattery(notincluded).Thebatterycom-
partment is located in the ignitor module
behind the ignitor button.
To install the battery into the ignitor:
1. Locate the ignitor button on the con-
trol panel (see Figure 6).
2. Rotate the ignitor button counterclock-
wise to remove.
3. Install a fresh AA alkaline battery into
the ignitor module, positive terminal
first.
4. Replace button by rotating clockwise.
Tightenfinger tight. Do notovertighten.
Note: Your fire pit may be lighted using a
match (see Lighting Instructions, page 7).

BATTERY CHECK
Lighting Using the Electronic
Spark Ignition System
1. Open equipment shutoff valve.
2. If you smell gas, STOP! Turn the
equipmentshutoffvalvetoOFF.Check
gas connections for leaks. Do not con-
tinue until gas leaks are corrected.
3. After correcting leaks, wait five (5)
minutes to clear out any gas. If you
then smell gas, STOP! Follow the
safetyinformationin column1.Ifyou
do not smell gas, go back to step 1.
4. Pushinandholdtheelectronicspark
ignitor button (see Figure 7). Note:
You should be able to hear a rapid
clickingsound fromthe burner bowl
whentheignitorbuttonis depressed.
If you do not hear anything, see Bat-
tery Check, this page, and Trouble-
shooting, pages 8 and 9.
5. Slightly depress and turn control
valve knob counterclockwise
to LOW. Push in and hold
control valve knob.
Lighting Manually with a Match
1. Open equipment shutoff valve.
2. If you smell gas, STOP! Turn the
equipmentshutoffvalvetoOFF.Check
gas connections for leaks. Do not con-
tinue until gas leaks are corrected.
3. Wait five(5) minutes to clear out any
gas.Ifyouthen smell gas,STOP!Fol-
lowthe safety informationincolumn
1. If you do not smell gas, go back to
step 1.
4. Light a match and lay it on top of
the lava rock just above the burner.
WARNING: Do not use this
applianceifanygascontrolparts
have been under water. Immedi-
ately call a qualified service per-
son to inspect the Patio Fire and
replace any part of the control
system and any gas control that
has been under water.
WARNING: All gas burning
appliances may produce smoke,
soot,orcarbonmonoxideduring
operation. These fumes can be
harmful if the appliance is used
anywhere other than in an open
air, fully-vented area.

MED, or HI. Slightly depress knob
before turning.
8. To shut off appliance, turn control
valve knob clockwise to the
OFF position.

ton after 30 seconds.

For all models. Equipment shutoff valve
with 1/8" NPT tap. Fits 1/2" NPT pipe.
CLEANING AND
MAINTENANCE
Regularly check all burner ports for block-
age. Burner ports are the small holes on top
oftheburner.Alsochecktheignitorportfor
blockage. This port is on the inside curve of
the burner, pointed at the ignitor electrode.
Alsocheckthethermocoupleportforblock-
age. This port is on the inside curve of the
burner, pointed at the thermocouple. Clear
blocked ports by gently inserting a small
wire into the port.
Logs or lava rock may become coated with
soot. If so, clean them using a bristle brush.
Check rubber supply hose periodically for
signsofwearordamage.Checkentirelength
of hose, including the portion inside the
pedestal.Checkhosebycarefullyliftingthe
pedestal up to view the entire hose. If hose
is damaged or worn, replace hose before
next use. Use only original replacement
parts. See Parts List on page 13 for service
replacement parts.
