About This User s Guide
This user sguide providesinstructionson howto install theDSL-504T ADSL Router anduseit to
provideInternetaccess foranEthernet LAN.
If youare using acomputer with afunctioningEthernet port,the quickest and easiestwaytoset
up theDSL-504T is tofollowthe instructions providedin the Quick InstallationGuide.
Before YouStart
Pleasereadandmakesure you understand all the prerequisites for proper installationof your new
Router.Haveall thenecessaryinformation andequipmentonhandbefore beginning the
installation.
Installation Overview
Theprocedure to installthe Router canbedescribed in generalterms in thefollowingsteps:
1.Gatherinformation andequipmentneededtoinstallthe device. Before youbegin the actual
installationmake sureyouhave allthe necessaryinformationand equipment.
2.Installthe hardware, connect the cablestothe device and connectthepoweradapter.
3.Checkthe IPsettings onyour computerandchange themifnecessary sothe computer can
accessthe web-basedsoftware built intothe Router.
4.Use theweb-based managementsoftware to configure the deviceto suit therequirements
of yourADSL service andprivate network.
The SetupWizard
Manyuserswillbeable toconfigureall the settingsnecessarytouse the DSL-504Twiththe Setup
Wizard. FormostADSL users, the simplest way to setupthe DSL-504Tis to use theSetupWizard
toconfigurethe Internetconnection. Onceyou access theweb interfaceused toconfigure the
device, justlaunch the Setup Wizard to configureyour Internet connection.

Installation Requirements
Inorderto establishaconnection tothe Internet itwill be necessary toprovide informationtothe
Router that will be storedin its memory.Forsomeusers,only their accountinformation (Username
andPassword)isrequired.Forothers,variousparametersthatcontrolanddefine theInternet
connection will be required. Youcanprintoutthetwo pagesbelowand usethe tables tolist this
information.This way youhaveahardcopyof all the informationneededtosetuptheRouter.If it
isnecessary toreconfigurethe device, all thenecessaryinformationcan be easily accessed. Be
sure tokeepthisinformation safeand private.
LowPass Filters
SinceADSL andtelephone services share thesamecopper wiringtocarrytheir respectivesignals,
afiltering mechanismmaybe necessary to avoid mutual interference.Alowpassfilter device can
be installed for eachtelephone that shares the line withtheADSL line. Thesefilters are easyto
install passivedevicesthatconnect tothe ADSL deviceand/ortelephoneusingstandard telephone
cable.Ask your service providerformoreinformationabouttheuseoflowpass filterswithyour
installation.
Operating Systems
The DSL-504Tusesan HTML-basedwebinterfaceforsetupandmanagement. The web
configuration managermay beaccessedusing anyoperatingsystemcapable ofrunning web
browser software, including Windows98 SE,Windows ME, Windows2000,andWindowsXP.
Web Browser
Any commonwebbrowser can beusedto configure the Routerusingtheweb configuration
management software. The program is designedtowork bestwithmore recentlyreleasedbrowsers
suchasOpera, MicrosoftInternetExplorer®version5.0,Netscape Navigator®version4.7, or later
versions.Theweb browser musthaveJavaScriptenabled.JavaScript is enabled bydefault on
many browsers.Makesure JavaScripthas notbeen disabled byothersoftware(suchasvirus
protectionorweb usersecurity packages) that may be runningon your computer.
Ethernet Port (NIC Adapter)
Anycomputer that usestheRouter mustbe able toconnecttoit through theEthernet portonthe
Router.ThisconnectionisanEthernet connection andthereforerequiresthat your computer be
equippedwithan Ethernetport as well.Mostnotebookcomputers are nowsoldwithan Ethernet
port alreadyinstalled.Likewise, mostfully assembled desktop computers come with an Ethernet
NIC adapter asstandardequipment. If yourcomputer doesnot have an Ethernet port, you must
install anEthernetNIC adapter beforeyoucanusethe Router.If you must install anadapter,
follow theinstallationinstructionsthatcomewiththeEthernet NIC adapter.
Additional Software
Itmay be necessary toinstall softwareonyour computer that enablesthe computer toaccess the
Internet. Additional softwaremust be installed if youareusingthedeviceasimple bridge.Fora
bridgedconnection,theinformation neededtomakeandmaintaintheInternet connection isstored
onanother computerorgatewaydevice, notinthe Router itself.
IfyourADSL serviceisdelivered through aPPPoE,PPPoAorStatic IP connection, theinformation
neededtoestablish andmaintaintheInternetconnection can be storedin the Router.In this case,
itisnotnecessary to install software on your computer.It mayhowever benecessaryto change
somesettingsinthedevice,includingaccount informationusedtoidentify and verifythe
connection.

Information you will need from your ADSL service provider:
Username
This is the Usernameusedtologon toyour ADSL
service provider snetwork.Itis commonlyinthe
form −[e-mail] ADSL service provider
uses thistoidentifyyour account.
Record info here
Password
This is the Passwordused,in conjunctionwith the
Usernameabove,tologon to yourADSLservice
provider snetwork.This is used toverifytheidentity
of youraccount.
Connection and
Encapsulation Type
This is the methodyourADSLserviceprovideruses
totransport data betweenthe Internet andyour
computer. Most userswilluse thedefault
PPPoE/PPPoA, connection type. The SetupWizard can
be usedtoconfigure a PPPoE/PPPoA connection type.
Youmay needtospecify one ofthe following
connection types (PPPoELLC,PPPoALLC or PPPoA
VC-MUX).Theotheravailable connectionand
encapsulationcombinations mustbeconfiguredusing
the webmanager. These includeBridgeMode (1483
Bridged IPLLC or 1483 BridgedIP VC-MUX), and
Static IP (Bridged IP LLC,1483Bridged IP VC-MUX,
1483 Routed IP LLC, 1483 Routed IP VC-MUXor
IPoA).
VPI
Most users willnot be required to changethis setting.
TheVirtual Path Identifier (VPI) is usedinconjunction
withthe Virtual Channel Identifier(VCI) toidentify
the data pathbetween yourADSL service provider s
network andyourcomputer.If youare settingup the
Router formultiple virtual connections, you willneed
toconfigure the VPI andVCI as instructed by your
ADSL service provider for the additional connections.
This settingcan be changed inthe WAN menu ofthe
web managementinterface.
VCI
Most users willnot be required to changethis setting.
TheVirtual ChannelIdentifier (VCI)usedin
conjunctionwith theVPI to identify thedata path
between your ADSLservice provider snetworkand
your computer.If you are settingup theRouter for
multiple virtualconnections, you will needto
configurethe VPIand VCIas instructed byyour ADSL
service providerforthe additional connections. This
setting canbe changed intheWANmenuof the web
management interface.
Note
The Setup Wizard canbeusedto configure theInternetconnectionformost users. If youare
usingaPPPoE orPPPoA typeconnectionusethe Setup Wizard toestablish the Internet
connection.

Introduction
This section providesabrief description of the Router,itsassociatedtechnologies andalistof
Router features.
Router Description and Operation
TheDSL-504T ADSLRouter is designedtoprovide asimple and cost-effectiveADSL Internet
connection forindividualcomputersthroughtheEthernet ports,oruse it tobridge yourEthernet
LANtothe Internet.TheDSL-504Tcombinesthe benefitsofhigh-speedADSL technologyandLAN
IP managementinone compactand convenient package. ADSL technologyenablesmany
interactivemulti-media applications suchas videoconferencing and collaborative computing.
The Routeriseasytoinstallanduse.TheDSL-504Tconnectsto computersoranEthernetLANvia
astandard Ethernetinterface.TheADSL connectionismadeusing ordinarytwisted-pair telephone
line withstandardconnectors.Multiple PCscan be networked andconnectedtothe Internet usinga
single Wide AreaNetwork(WAN) interface andsingleglobal IP address.
TheRouter supportstransparentbridgingand can beused forIP packetrouting over theInternet.
Costsaving features oftheRoutersuchas NAT (Network AddressTranslator) and DHCP (Dynamic
HostConfigurationProtocol) improve administrationefficiency andimprovesecurityfor your
privatenetwork. The advancedsecurityenhancements,packetfiltering andportredirection, can
help protectyour network from potentially devastatingintrusionsbymaliciousagents from outside
your network.
What isADSL?
AsymmetricDigital Subscriber Line (ADSL) isan access technology that utilizes ordinarycopper
telephonelines toenable broadbandhigh-speeddigital data transmissionand interactive
multimedia applicationsfor businessand residentialcustomers.
ADSL greatlyincreasesthe signal carrying capacityof coppertelephone lineswithoutinterfering
withregulartelephone services. FortheADSL user,this meansfasterdownloads and morereliable
connectivity. ADSL devicesmakeit possibletoenjoy benefits suchas high-speed Internetaccess
withoutexperiencing any lossof qualityordisruption ofvoice/faxtelephonecapabilities.
ADSL providesadedicatedservice overa single telephoneline operating atspeedsofup to 8 Mbps
downstreamandup to640 Kbpsupstream,depending onlocaltelephone line conditions.Asecure
point-to-point connection is established between theuser and the central office ofthe service
provider.
D-Link ADSL devices incorporatethe recommendationsofthe ADSL Forumregarding framing,data
format, and upperlayerprotocols.

• PPP(Point-to-Point Protocol)Security TheDSL-504TADSLRoutersupportsPAP
(PasswordAuthenticationProtocol) and CHAP (Challenge HandshakeAuthenticationProtocol)
forPPP connections.
• DHCP Support Dynamic HostConfigurationProtocolautomatically anddynamically assigns
al LANIP settingstoeach hoston yournetwork.This eliminatestheneedtoreconfigureevery
hostwheneverchangesin networktopology occur.
• Network AddressTranslation (NAT) For small office environments,the DSL-504Tallows
multiple userson theLAN to access the Internet concurrentlythrougha single Internet account.
This provides Internetaccessto everyonein the office for theprice of a singleuser.
NAT improves network security ineffect by hidingthe privatenetworkbehindoneglobal and
visible IP address.NAT addressmappingcanalsobeused tolinktwoIP domains viaaLAN-to-
LAN connection.
• TCP/IP (TransferControlProtocol/Internet Protocol) The DSL-504T supportsTCP/IP
protocol,the language used for the Internet.It iscompatiblewith access serversmanufactured
by majorvendors.
• RIP TheDSL-504T supportsRIP (RIP V1compatible) to exchangerouting informationwith
other routers.
• StaticRouting This allows you to selecta data pathtoaparticular networkdestinationthat
will remain inthe routing table andnever “age out”.Ifyouwishtodefine aspecific route that
will always be used fordata trafficfrom your LANto a specific destination within your LAN (for
exampletoanother routeroraserver)oroutside yournetwork(toaISP defineddefault
gatewayfor instance).
• Default Routing This allows youto choose adefaultpathfor incomingdatapacketsfor
which the destination address isunknown.This isparticularly useful whenifthe Router
functions asthe sole connectionto theInternet.
• ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) TheDSL-504T supports Bridged Ethernet overATM
(RFC1483),IP overATM (RFC1577) and PPP over ATM (RFC 2364).
• PreciseATM Traffic Shaping Trafficshapingisa method ofcontrolling the flowrateof ATM
data cells.This function helps to establishthe Qualityof Service forATMdata transfer.
• G.hs(Auto-handshake) This allowstheRouter to automatically chooseeither the G.lite or
G.dmtADSL connectionstandards.
• High Performance Very highratesof data transfer arepossible withthe Router. Uptoeight
Mbpsdownstreambit rateusingtheG.dmt.
• FullNetwork Management TheDSL-504TincorporatesSNMP(Simple Network

HardwareInstallation
TheDSL-504T maintainsfiveseparateinterfaces,fourswitched Ethernetportsandone ADSL
interface.Place the Routerinalocationwhereitcanbe easily connectedtothevariousdevices as
well asto a power source.The Router should not be located where it will be exposed to moisture or
excessiveheat. Make surethe cables andpower cordareplacedsafely out of theway sotheydo
notcreateatrippinghazard. As with any electrical appliance, observecommonsense safety
precautions.
TheRoutercan be placedonashelfordesktop,ideallyyou shouldbeable to see theLED
indicators on the front if youneed toview them fortroubleshooting.To conserve desktopspace,
theRouteris shipped withplastic feetthat canbesnapped into placeto supportit. TheFrontand
Rearpanel views presentedabove show thedevicemounted using theplasticfeet.
Power on Router
CAUTION: The Router must be used with the power adapter included with the device.
Topower onthe Router:
1. Connect the power adapter shipped with the Router to the power recepticle on the
back panel ofthedevice.
2. Plug the power adapter to an suitable electricalwalloutlet or power strip.
3. Toggle the power switch on the back panel to power on the Router. The Power LED
on thefront oftheRouterwill light greenindicating itis powered on.
FactoryReset Button
TheRouter may be reset tothe originalfactorydefaultsettingsby depressing the resetbuttonfor
afew secondswhile the device ispoweredon.Use a ballpointpenor paperclip togentlypushdown
theresetbutton.Hold thereset buttondownuntil theStatuslight goesdark.Remember that this
willwipeoutany settingsstoredinflash memory includinguseraccountinformationand LANIP
settings.Thefactory default IP address ofthe Routeris 10.1.1.1 andthe subnet maskis 255.0.0.0,
thedefault managementUsernameis admin and the default Passwordis admin.

Network Connections
Networkconnectionsareprovided throughthe ADSL port and the fourEthernetportsontheback
ofthe Router.See theRear Paneldiagramaboveandthe illustrations belowforexamples.
Connect ADSL Line
Use the ADSLcable included with theRouter toconnect it to atelephone wall socket orreceptacle.
Plug one endof the cable into theADSL port (RJ-11receptacle) ontherearpanel of the Router and
insert the other endintotheRJ-11wallsocket. Ifyouare usingalow pass filter device, follow the
instructions includedwiththe device orgiventoyou by your serviceprovider. The ADSL connection
represents theWAN interface, the connectionto theInternet.Itis the physical linktothe service
provider snetworkbackboneandultimately to the Internet.
Connect Router to Ethernet
TheRoutermaybeconnected tocomputersorEthernetdevicesthrough the 10BASE-TX Ethernet
portson the rear panel.Any connection toan Ethernetconcentrating devicesuchasaswitchor
hubmustoperateataspeedof10/100 Mbpsonly.WhenconnectingtheRoutertoanyEthernet
device that iscapable ofoperatingat speeds higher than10Mbps,be surethat thedevice has
auto-negotiation(NWay)enabled forthe connectingport.
Use standardtwisted-pair cablewith RJ-45connectors.TheRJ-45porton theRouter isacrossed
port (MDI-X). FollowstandardEthernet guidelineswhendecidingwhat typeofcabletousetomake
this connection.Whenconnectingthe Router directly toacomputerorserver useanormal
straight-throughcable. You should useacrossedcable whenconnecting theRouter toanormal
(MDI-X)portonaswitch orhub.Useanormalstraight-throughcablewhenconnectingitto an
uplink (MDI-II)port ona hub or switch.
Therules governing Ethernet cable lengthsapply to the LAN to Router connection. Be surethatthe
cable connecting the LANto theRouter doesnot exceed 100meters.

Basic RouterConfiguration
Thefirst time yousetup the Router itis recommendedthatyouconfigure theWANconnection
using asingle computer connecteddirectlyto theRouter.Oncethe WANconnectionisfunctioning
properly,you maycontinuetomake changestoRouterconfiguration includingIP settingsand
DHCP setup.
Wan Configuration Summary
1. Connect to the Router To configure the WAN connectionusedby the Router it is first
necessarytocommunicatewiththeRouter throughits managementinterface, which is
HTML-based andcan beaccessed using awebbrowser.Toaccessthe management
softwareyourcomputer mustbe able to “see”theRouter.Your computercan see the
Router ifitisinthe same “neighborhood”orsubnetastheRouter. Thisisaccomplished by
makingsureyour computer has IPsettingsthatplaceitinthesamesubnet as theRouter.
The easiest waytomake sure your computer has thecorrect IP settingsisto configureit to
use theDHCP server in the Router. The sectionbelowdescribes howtochange theIP
configuration for acomputer runningaWindowsoperating systemto be aDHCP client.
2. Configure the WAN Connection Onceyourare ableto accesstheconfiguration software
you canproceed tochange thesettingsrequired toestablishtheADSL connectionand
connect to theservice provider snetwork.Thereare different methods usedtoestablish

Configuring IPSettings on Your Computer
In order to configureyoursystem toreceiveIPsettings from theRouteritmust first have the
TCP/IP protocol installed.If youhave anEthernetportonyourcomputer,itprobablyalready has
TCP/IP protocol installed.Ifyou areusingWindows XP theTCP/IP isenabled by default for
standardinstallations. Belowis anillustratedexampleof howtoconfigure aWindows XP systemto
automatically obtainIP settingsfromtheRouter.Following thisexampleisastep-by-step
descriptionofthe proceduresused on the otherWindowsoperatingsystems to firstcheckifthe
TCP/IP protocol hasbeeninstalled; if itisnot,instructionsareprovidedforinstalling it. Oncethe
protocol has beeninstalledyoucan configure the system toreceiveIP settings fromtheRouter.
Forcomputersrunningnon-Windowsoperatingsystems,followthe instructionsforyour OSthat
configure thesystem toreceiveanIP address fromtheRouter, that is,configure thesystem tobe
a DHCP client.

If youare usingthis Router toprovide Internet access for morethan one computer, youcanuse
these instructions laterto changethe IP settings forthe other computers.UsingDHCP will ensure
thattheIPaddressesassigned toeachworkstation is uniqueand ableto connect totheRouter.

Configure WindowsXP for DHCP
Use the following steps to configure acomputerrunning WindowsXP to beaDHCP client.
1.Fromthe Start menu onyour desktop,goto Settings,then click on Network
Connections.
2.In the NetworkConnections window, right-click on LAN (LocalArea Connection),then
click Properties.

3.In the General tab ofthe Local Area Connection Properties menu,highlight Internet

Windows 2000
First,checkfor the IP protocol and,ifnecessary, install it:
1.In the Windows taskbar, clickthe Start button,pointto Settings,andthenclick Control
Panel.
2.Double-click the Network and Dial-up Connections icon.
3.Inthe Network and Dial-up Connections window,right-clickthe Local Area
Connection icon, and thenselect Properties.
4.The LocalArea Connection Properties dialog box displays withalist of currently
installed network components. If the listincludesInternet Protocol (TCP/IP), thenthe
protocol has alreadybeen enabled,skip aheadto Configure Windows2000for DHCP.
5.If Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)doesnotdisplay as aninstalled component,click Install.
6.In the Select NetworkComponent Type dialog box, select Protocol, and thenclick Add.
7.Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) intheNetwork Protocols list, and thenclick OK.
8.Youmay beprompted to install files fromyourWindows2000 installationCDorother
media. Followtheinstructionstoinstall thefiles.
9.If prompted,click OK torestart your computer with the newsettings.
Configure Windows 2000 for DHCP
1.Inthe Control Panel, double-clickthe Network and Dial-up Connections icon.
2.In Networkand Dial-up Connections window,right-click the LocalArea Connection
icon, andthenselect Properties.
3.In the LocalArea Connection Properties dialog box,select Internet Protocol

4.In the Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) Properties dialog box, clickthe buttonlabeled
Obtain an IP address automatically.
5.Double-click OK to confirm andsave your changes, andthen close the Control Panel.
Your computerisnowreadyto usethe Router sDHCP server.

9.You maybeprompted toinstall files fromyourWindows MeinstallationCD orother media.
Followthe instructionsto install the files.
10. If prompted,click OK torestart your computer with the newsettings.
