PRODUCT SAFETY SERVICING GUIDELINES FOR COLOR TELEVISION RECEIVERS

yourbeingliableforanyresultingpropertydamageoruserinjury.
Serviceworkshouldbeperformedonlyafteryouarethoroughly
familiarwithallofthefollowingsafetychecksandservicingguide-
lines.Todootherwise,increasestheriskofpotentialhazardsand
injurytotheuser.
SAFETY CHECKS
Aftertheoriginalserviceproblemhasbeencorrected,acheckshould
bemadeofthefollowing:
SUBJECT : FIRE & SHOCK HAZARD
1.Besurethatallcomponentsarepositionedinsuchawayasto
avoidpossibilityofadjacentcomponentshorts.Thisisespecially
importantonthosechassiswhicharetransportedtoandfromthe
repairshop.
2.Neverreleasearepairunlessallprotectivedevicessuchasinsula-
tors,barriers,covers,shields,strainreliefs,andotherhardware
havebeenreinstalledperoriginaldesign.
3.Solderingmustbeinspectedtodiscoverpossiblecoldsolderjoints,
frayedleads,damagedinsulation(includingA.C.cord),solder
splashesorsharpsolderpoints.Becertaintoremoveallloosefor-
eignparticals.
4.Checkforphysicalevidenceofdamageordeteriorationtoparts
andcomponents,andreplaceifnecessaryfolloworiginallayout,
leadlengthanddress.
5.Noleadsorcomponentsshouldtouchareceivingtubeoraresistor
ratedat1wattormore.Leadtensionaroundprotrudingmetalsur-
facesmustbeavoided.
6.Allcriticalcomponentssuchasfuses,flameproofresistors,capaci-
tors,etc.mustbereplacedwithexactfactorytypes.Donotuse
replacementcomponentsotherthanthosespecifiedormake
unrecommendedcircuitmodifications.
7.Afterre-assemblyofthesetalwaysperformanA.C.leakagetest
onallexposedmetallicpartsofthecabinet,(thechannelselector
knob,antennaterminals,handleandscrews)tobesurethesetis
safetooperatewithoutdangerofelectricalshock.Donotusea
lineisolationtransformerduringthistest.UseanA.C.voltmeter,
having5000ohmspervoltormoresensitivity,inthefollowing
manner:connecta1500ohm10wattresistor,paralleledbya15
mfd.150VA.C.typecapacitorbetweenaknowngoodearth
ground(9waterpipe,conduit,etc.)andtheexposedmetallicparts,
oneatatime.MeasuretheA.C.voltageacrossthecombinationof
1500ohmresistorand0.15MFDcapacitor.ReversetheA.C.plug
andrepeatA.C.voltagemeasurementsforeachexposedmetallic
part.Voltagemeasuredmustnotexceed0.75voltsR.M.S.This
correspondsto0.5milliampA.C.Anyvalueexceedingthislimit
constitutesapotentialshockhazardandmustbecorrectedimme-
diately.

SUBJECT : X-RADIATION
1.Besureproceduresandinstructionstoallservicepersonnelcover
thesubjectofX-raysincurrentT.V.receiversisthepicturetube.
However,thistubedoesnotemitX-rayswhenthehighvoltageis
atthefactoryspecifiedlevel.Thepropervalueisgivenintheappli-
cableschematic.Operationathighervoltagesmaycauseafailure
ofthepicturetubeorhighvoltagesupplyand,undercertaincir-
cumstances,mayproduceradiationinexcessofdesirablelevels.
2.OnlyfactoryspecifiedC.R.T.anodeconnectorsmustbeused.
DegaussingshieldsalsoserveasX-rayshieldincolorsets.
Alwaysre-installthem.
3.Itisessentialthattheservicemanhasavailableanaccurateand
reliablehighvoltagemeter.Thecalibrationofthemetershouldbe
checkedperio-dicallyagainstareferencestandard.Suchasthe
oneavailableatyourdistributor.
4.Whenthehighvoltagecircuitryisoperatingproperlythereisno
possibilityofanX-radiationproblem.Everytimeacolorchassisis
serviced,thebrightnessshouldberunupanddownwhilemonitor-
ingthehighvoltagewithametertobecertainthatthehighvoltage
doesnotexceedthespecifiedvalueandthatitisregulatingcor-
rectly.Wesuggestthatyouandyourserviceorganizationreview
testproceduressothatvoltageregulationisalwayscheckedasa
standardservicingprocedure.Andthatthehighvoltagereadingbe
recordedoneachcustomer’sinvoice.
5.Whentroubleshootingandmakingtestmeasurementsinareceiver
withaproblemofexcessivehighvoltage,avoidbeingunnecessarily
closetothepicturetubeandthehighvoltagecompartment.
Donotoperatethechassislongerthanisnecessarytolocatethe
causeofexcessivevoltage.
6.RefertoHV,B+andShutdownadjustmentproceduresdescribedin
theappropriateschematicanddiagrams(whereused).
