INTRODUCTION
This manual is a step-by-step guide to assembly and disassembly designed for the customer or
shop mechanic who is servicing or repairing a particular model of torque-hub final drive. (The
model covered by this copy of the manual is specified on the manual cover)
An identification number is enclosed in parentheses follows each part mentioned in this manual.
The identification number refers to a part in the parts list of this manual and in the Cross-
Sectional view of the unit.
The tool list contains any specialized tools normally used to assemble this unit, and the tool
print pages contain diagrams of the tools in the tool list. However, you do not have to use these
tools to assemble this unit. Youcan press in bearing cups and cones using a punch and hammer
along their top edges. You can press seals in by laying a board flat on top of the seal and then
hammering the board down until it meets the hub. You can hammer studs into stud holes. If
you use these methods, be very careful not to damage the parts while using the punch and/or
hammer.
Users should familiarize themselves with the procedures for roll and leak testing and bolt
tightening and torquing found on the following pages before getting started.
NOTE: At the time of completion, this manual was complete for the specific Torque-Hubmodel
designated. However, Fairfield reserves the right to update and improve its products at any
time. All specifications and procedures are therefore subject to change withoutnotice.
SAFETY
Standard safety practices should be followed during the disassembly and assembly procedures
described. Safety glasses and safety shoes should be worn. Heavy, heat resistant gloves
should be used when heated components are handled. Be especially alert when you see the
word CAUTION or see ⚠. This indicates that a particular operation could cause personal injury
ifnotperformedproperlyorifcertainsafetyproceduresarenotfollowed. ThewordNOTE is used

to bring attention to the user of certain procedures or helpful hints that will aid in the disassembly
and assembly steps.

ROLL and LEAK TESTING
Torque-Hub units should always be roll and leak tested before disassembly and after
assembly to make sure that the unit’s gears, bearings and seals are working properly.
The following information briefly outlines what to look for when performing these tests.
The Roll Test:
The purpose of a roll test is to determine if the unit’s gears are rotating freely and properly. You
should be able to rotate the gears in your unit by applying a constant force to the roll checker. If
you feel more drag in the gears only at certain points, then the gears are not rolling freely and
should be examined for improper installation or defects. Some gear packages roll with more
difficulty than others. Do not be concerned if the gears in your unit seem to roll hard as long as
they roll with consistency.
The Leak Test: (Main Unit)
The purpose of a leak test is to make sure the unit is air tight. You can tell if your unit has a
leak if the pressure gauge reading on your air checker starts to fall once the unit has been
pressurized. Leaks will most likely occur at the main seal or whenever “O” rings or gaskets
are located. The exact location of a leak can usually be detected by brushing a soap and wa-
ter solution around the main seal and where “O” rings or gaskets meet the exterior of the unit,
then checking for air bubbles. If a leak is detected in a seal, “O” ring, or gasket; the part must
be replaced, and the unit checked. Leak test at 10 psi for 20 minutes.
TIGHTENING and TORQUING BOLTS
If an air impact wrench is used to tighten bolts, extreme care should be taken to insure that
the bolts are not tightened beyond their specified torque. Never use an impact wrench to
tighten shoulder bolts. All shoulder bolts should be tightened by hand.
The following steps describe how to tighten and torque bolts or socket head cap screws in a
bolt circle.
1. Tighten (but do not torque) bolt “A” until
snug.
2. Go to the opposite side of the bolt circleand
tighten bolt “B” until equally snug.
3. Continue around the bolt circle and tighten
the remaining bolts.
4. Now use a torque wrench to apply the
specified torque to bolt “A”.
5. Continue around the bolt circle and apply an
equal torque to the remaining bolts.

MAIN DISASSEMBLY

MAIN DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove pipe plug (15) from
cover (6) anddrain the oil fromthe
unit.
2. Remove 24 bolts (16) from cover
(6).
3. Lift cover (6) off of ring gear (4).
4. Place cover (6), interior side up,
on work surface. Remove thrust
washer (7) from around the raised
circular edge near the center of
the cover.
5. Remove “O” ring (5) from the
counterbore of cover (6). Discard
“O” ring.
6. Remove input gear (8) from the
center of first stage carrier sub-
assembly (3).
7. Remove thrust washer (14),
thrust bearing (13), and thrust
washer (12) from counterbore on
the top of first stage carrier sub-
assembly (3).
8. Lift first stage carrier (3) out of
hub (1G).
9. Remove thrust bearing
carrier (10) around second stage
carrier (2).
10. Remove thrust washer (14),
thrust bearing (13), and thrust
washer (12) from counterbore onthe
top of second stage carrier sub-
assembly (2).
11. Remove second stage sun
gear (11) from mesh with second
stage carrier sub-assembly (2).
12. Lift ring gear (4) off of hub (G).
13. Remove “O” ring (5) from the
counterbore of hub (1G). Discard “O”
ring.
14. Lift second stage carriersub-
assembly (2) out of hub (1G).
15. At this point the main
disassembly is complete.

HUB-SPINDLE DISASSEMBLY
HUB-SPINDLE DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove three pipe plugs (1R): one
is in the bottom of spindle (1A),and
two are in the flange of spindle.
2. Remove pipe plug (1P) from the
pipe plug holes in side of hub (1G).
3. Remove pipe plug (2N) from the
pipe plug hole in side of hub (1G).
CAUTION: Safety glasses should be
worn during this step:
4. Using retaining ring pliers, remove
retaining ring (1L) from over
locknut (1K).
5. Knock tang of lockwasher (1J) out
of slot in locknut (1K).
6. Using locknut wrench (T-156766),
loosen and remove locknut (1K).
7. Remove lockwasher (1J) from end
of spindle (1A).
8. Remove tanged washer (1H) from
end of spindle (1A).
9. With large end of spindle down,
press spindle (1A) out of hub (1G).
10. Bearing cone (1F) should be loose
in hub (1G). Remove bearingcone
(1F) from hub (1G).
11. Turn hub (1G) over onto its wide
end. Remove last pipe plug (1R)
from seal boot (20).
12. Remove seal boot (20) form end of
hub (1G).
13. Remove seal (1B) from the small
end of hub (1G). Discard seal (1B).
14. Remove bearing cone (1D) from
bearing cup (1C) in the small end of
hub (1G).
NOTE: Be careful not to strike the
counterbore ( where the cup sits) with
the punch in this step.
15. Usingpunchandhammer,remove
bearing cup (1E) from the counterbore
in the wide end of hub (1G).
NOTE: Be careful not to strike the
counterbore (where the cup sits) with
the punch in this step.
16. Set hub (1G), wide end up, on
something on the work surface, so
the cup can fall out of the
counterbore. Using a punch and
hammer, remove bearing cup (1C)
from the counterbore in the small end
of hub (1G).
17. At this point the hub-spindle
disassembly is complete.

DISASSEMBLY
SecondStageCarrierDisassembly
1. Drive dowel pin (2G) completely into
planet shaft (2E). If pin is not driven
commpletely into planet shaft,
damage to the carrier couls result
when the shaft is removed.
2. Drive planet shaft (2E) down out of
carrier housing (2A).
3. When shaft is driven out of carrier
housing, two thrust washers (2B),
one planet gear (2F), and two more
thrust washers (2B) will come off of
planet shaft (2E). Set these parts
aside.
4. Using an alignment punch, drive
dowel pins (2G) out of planet shaft
(2E).
5. Remove the 18 needle bearings
(2C0 from one side of planet gear
(2F).
6. Remove spacer (2D) from inside
planet gear (2F).
7. Remove the remaining needle
bearings (2C) from inside planet
gear (2F).
8. Repeat steps 1 to 7 to remove and
disassemble the two remaining
planet gears.
9. Atthispoint,thesecondstagecarrier
disassembly is complete.
First Stage Carrier Disassembly
1. Drive dowel pin (3D) completely into
planet shaft (3E). If pin is not driven
completely into planet shaft, damage
to the carrier could result when the
shaft is removed.
2. Drive planet shaft (3E) down out of
carrier housing (3A).
3. When shaft is driven out of carrier
housing, two thrust washers (3B),
one planet gear (3F), and two more
thrust washers (3B) will come off of
planet shaft (3E). Set these parts
aside.
4. Using an alignment punch, drive
dowel pin (3D) out of planet shaft
(3E).
5. Remove the 19 needle rollers (3C)
from planet gear (3F).
6. Repeat steps 1 to 5 to remove and
disassemble the two remaining
planet gears.
7. At this point, the first stage carrier
disassembly is complete.

FIRST STAGE CARRIER SUB-ASSEMBLY
1. Apply grease to the inside of one planet gear (3F). Line the inside of planet gear
(3F) with 19 needle rollers (3C).
2. Stand carrier housing (3A) on its side. Insert a planet shaft (3E) into one ofthe
planet shaft holes in carrier housing (3A). The end of the planet shaft that does not
have the dowel pin hole should be inserted first.
3. Place two thrust washers (3B) onto the end of planet shaft (3E) that has been
inserted through the planet shaft hole. Grease or petroleum jelly may be used to hold
the washers together and in place on the planet shaft.
4. Following the thrust washers, place assembled planet gear (3F) onto planet shaft
(3E).
5. Following the planet gear, place two more thrust washers (3B) onto planet shaft
(3E). Grease or petroleum jelly may be used to hold the washers together and in place
on the planet shaft. Now insert planet shaft (3E) into the opposite planet shaft hole in
carrier housing (3A).
6. Using an alignment punch, align the dowel pin holes in carrier housing (3A) and
planet shaft (3E). Drive dowel pin (3D) into the aligned dowel pin holes in carrier
housing (3A) and planet shaft (3E).
7. Repeat steps 1 to 6 to assemble and install the two remaining planet gears.
8. At this point, the first stage carrier sub-assembly is complete.

SECOND STAGE CARRIER SUB-ASSEMBLY
1. Apply grease to the inside of one planet gear (2F). Line one half of planet gear
(2F) with 18 needle bearings (2C).
2. Place spacer (2D) on top of the needle bearing (2C).
3. Line the remaining half of planet gear (2F) with 18 needle bearings (2C).
4. Stand carrier housing (2A) on its side. Insert a planet shaft (2E) into one ofthe
planet shaft holes in carrier housing (2A). The end of the planet shaft that does not
have the dowel pin hole should be inserted first.
5. Place two thrust washers (2B) onto the end of planet shaft (2E) that has been
inserted through the planet shaft hole. Grease or petroleum jelly may be used to hold the
washers together and in place on the planet shaft.
6. Following the thrust washers, place assembled planet gear (2F) onto planet shaft
(2E).
7. Following the planet gear, place two more thrust washers (2B) onto planet shaft
(2E). Grease or petroleum jelly may be used to hold the washers together and in place
on the planet shaft. Now insert planet shaft (2E) into the opposite planet shaft hole in
carrier housing (2A).
8. Using an alignment punch, align the dowel pin holes in carrier housing (2A) and
planet shaft (2E). Drive dowel pin (2G) into the aligned dowel pin holes in carrier
housing (2A) and planet shaft (2E).
9. Repeat steps 1 to 8 to assemble and install the two remaining planet gears.
10. At this point, the second stage carrier sub-assembly is complete.
