Monitor Specifications
The following sections give you information about the various power management modes and pin assignments for various connectors of your monitor.
Power Management Modes
If you have VESA's DPM compliance display card or software installed in your PC, the monitor automatically reduces its power consumption when not in use. This is
referred to as Power Save Mode.
If the computer detects input from keyboard, mouse, or other input devices, the monitor automatically resumes functioning. The
following table shows the power consumption and signaling of this automatic power saving feature:
The OSD will only function in the normal operation mode. When any button except power button is pressed in Active-
off mode, the following messages will be displayed:
Activate the computer and monitor to gain access to the OSD.

Plug and Play Capability
You can install the monitor in any Plug and Play-
compatible system. The monitor automatically provides the computer with its Extended Display Identification Data
(EDID) using Display Data Channel (DDC) protocols so that the system can configure itself and optimize the monitor settings. Most monitor installations are automatic.
You can select different settings if required.

Maintenance Guidelines
Caring for your Monitor
For best practices, follow the instructions in the list below while unpacking, cleaning, or handling your monitor:
lTo clean your antistatic screen, slightly dampen a soft, clean cloth with water. If possible, use a special screen-cleaning tissue or solution suitable for the
antistatic coating. Do not use benzene, thinner, ammonia, abrasive cleaners, or compressed air.
lUseaslightlydampened,warmclothtocleantheplastics.Avoidusingdetergentofanykindassomedetergentsleaveamilkyfilmontheplastics.
lIf you notice a white powder when you unpack your monitor, wipe it off with a cloth. This white powder occurs during the shipping of the monitor.
lHandleyourmonitorwithcareasdarker-colored monitor may scratch and show white scuff marks more than lighter-coloredmonitor.
lTo help maintain the best image quality on your monitor, use a dynamically changing screen saver and power off your monitor when not in use.


IfyouhavenonDell™desktop,portablecomputer,orgraphiccard
1. Right-click on the desktop and click Properties.
2. Select the Settings tab.
3. Select Advanced.
4. Identify your graphics controller supplier from the description at the top of the window (e.g. NVIDIA, ATI, Intel etc.).
5. Refer to the graphic card provider website for updated driver (for example, http://www.ATI.com OR http://www.NVIDIA.com ).
6. After installing the drivers for your Graphics Adapter, attempt to set the resolution to 1440x900 again.


The following table describes the front panel buttons:

Use the Menu button to open and exit the on-screen display (OSD), and exit from menus and sub-menus. See Using the OSD
Menu.


Brightness/Contrast
Hot Key
Use this button to directly access the "Brightness/Contrast" menu or to increase the values of the selected menu option.
C
Auto Adjust
Use this button to activate automatic setup/adjustment or to decrease the values of the selected menu option.
Auto Adjustment allows the monitor to self-adjust to the incoming video signal. After using Auto Adjustment, you can further
tune your monitor by using the Pixel Clock and Phase controls under Image Settings.
The following dialog appears on a black screen as the monitor automatically adjusts to the current input:

Using the OSD Menu

1. Press the button to open the OSD menu and display the main menu.
2. Press the Ùand Úbuttons to move between the setting options. As you move from one icon to another, the option name is highlighted. See the table
below for a complete list of all the options available for the monitor.
3. Press the buttononcetoactivatethehighlightedoption.
4. Press Ùand Úbutton to select the desired parameter.
5. Press to enter the slide bar and then use the Ùand Úbuttons, according to the indicators on the menu, to make your changes.
6. Press the button once to return to the main menu to select another option or press the button two or three times to exit from the OSD menu.

Use this button to select the input source or select an OSD menu option.
NOTE: The floating 'Dell Self-testFeatureCheck'dialogappearsonablackbackgroundifthemonitorcannotsenseavideo
signal. Depending upon the selected input, the following dialog boxes scroll continually on the screen.

Menu and Submenus
Description
Brightness & Contrast
Brightness adjusts the luminance of the backlight. Adjust Brightness first, then adjust Contrast
only if further adjustment is necessary.
Press the Ùbutton to increase luminance and push the Úbutton to decrease luminance (min 0 ~ max 100).
Contrast adjusts the degree of difference between darkness and lightness on the monitor screen.
Press the Ùbutton to increase the contrast and press the Úbutton to decrease the contrast (min 0 ~ max 100).


Auto Adjust
Even though your computer recognizes your monitor on startup, the Auto Adjustment function optimizes the display settings for use with your
particular setup.

NOTE:
Inmostcases,AutoAdjustproducesthebestimageforyourconfiguration.
Color Settings :


Input Color Format
Use the Color Settings menu to set the Input Color format and mode.
Choose RGB if monitor is connected to a PC or a DVD using a VGA cable.
Choose YPbPr
option if monitor is connected to a DVD by a YPbPr to VGA or if the DVD color output setting is not RGB.

NOTE: The Dell S1709W Flat Panel monitor supports analog (VGA) input only.

Mode Selection
Preset Modes
Allows you to set the display mode to Graphics or Video according to the input signal.
Select Graphics if you are connecting a computer to your monitor;
Select Video if you are connecting a DVD player, STB, or VCR player to your monitor.
Allows you to set the color settings to one of the preset modes.

In the Graphics mode, you can choose one of the following preset modes: Standard
, Multimedia, Game, Warm, Cool, or Custom (RGB);
lStandard:Allows you to utilize the flat panel's native color format.
lMultimedia: suitable for viewing media applications like photo or video clips using your computer.
lGame: suitable for playing games on your computer.
lWarm: suitable for color-intensive application like image editing, movies, etc.
lCool: suitable for text based application lie spreadsheets, programming, text editors, etc.
lCustom (RGB):
Allows you to increase or decrease each of the three colors (RGB) independently, in single digit increments, from 0 to
100.Offersarangeof6500Kcolors.

In the Video mode, you can choose one of the following preset modes:
lMovie: suitable for watching a movie.
lSports: suitable for playing a sports program.
lGame: suitable for playing a game.
lNature
: suitable for general picture, web, or watching TV. You can adjust the Hue (tint)/Saturation based on your preference. If you
want to restore default color settings, choose Color Reset;
lReset Color Settings: allows you to restore the default (factory) Color settings. This setting is also the sRGB
standard default color
space.

Sharpness
Pixel Clock and Phase
Use the Display Settings menu to adjust the image position and sharpness.
Allows you to adjust the horizontal position of the image. Use the Ùand Úbuttons to move the image horizontally.
Allows you to adjust the vertical position of the image. Use the Ùand Úbuttons to move the image vertically.
Allows you to adjust the sharpness of the image. Use the Ùand Úbuttons to make adjustments from 0~100.
Allows you to finely adjust your monitor to your preference. Use the Ùand Ú
buttons to make the adjustments (Minimum: 0 ~ Maximum:
100).
If you are not satisfied with the image obtained after Phase adjustment, use Pixel Clock adjustment (Coarse) and then use Phase adjustment
(fine), again.
NOTE:
This function may change the width of the display image. Use the Horizontal Position function to center the image on the screen.










Reset Display Settings
Select this option to restore default display settings.
Other Settings :


Use the Other Setting
menu to adjust the settings of the OSD, such as, the location of the OSD, the amount of time the menu remains on
screen, and the rotation of the OSD, and so on.

Language
"Allows you to choose language of the OSD menu. You can choose from: English, French, Spanish, German, and Japanese.
NOTE: The change only affects the OSD. It has no effect on any software running on the computer.
Menu Transparency
Allows you to change the menu transparency by pressing the ÙandÚbuttons (Minimum: 0 ~ Maximum: 100).
Menu Timer
The OSD stays active for as long as it is in use. The Menu Timer
allows you to adjust the hold time and sets the length of time the OSD
remains active after the last time you pressed a button. Use the Ùand Ú
buttons to adjust the slider in 5 second increments, from 5 to 60
seconds.
Menu Lock
Allows you to control user access to adjustments. When "Lock" is selected, all the buttons (except the menu button) are locked.

NOTE:
When the OSD is locked, pressing the menu button takes the user directly to the OSD settings menu. Select "Unlock" to unlock and
allow the user to access and adjust all applicable settings.

OSD Warning Messages
The following warning messages may appear on the screen indicating that the monitor is out of synchronization.

This means that the monitor cannot synchronize with the signal that it receives from the computer. Either the signal is too high or too low for the monitor to
use.SeeSpecificationsfortheHorizontalandVerticalfrequencyrangesaddressablebythismonitor.Recommendedmodeis1440X900@60Hz.
NOTE: You can also lock or unlock the OSD by pushing and holding the button for 15 seconds.
DCC/CI
DisplayDataChannel/CommandInterfaceallowsyoutoadjustthemonitorparameters(brightness,color,balance,etc.)using
softwareapplicationsonyourcomputer.YoucandisablethisfeaturebyselectingDisable
. The following warning message appears:
Select Yes to disable DDC/CI and No to exit with out making changes.

NOTE: Forbestuserexperienceandoptimumperformanceofyourmonitor,keepthisfeatureenabled.

LCD Conditioning
Helps reduce minor cases of image retention. Depending on the degree of image retention, the program may take some time to run. You can
enable this feature by selecting Enable. The following error message appears:
Select Yes to start LCD conditioning and No to quit without making changes.
Factory Reset
ResetstheOSDmenuoptionstothefactorypresetvalues.
Reset All Setings:Changesalltheuser-adjustable settings including color, position, brightness, contrast,
menu transparency, and OSD hold
timetothefactorydefaults.ThelanguageoftheOSDdoesnotchange.
NOTE: The floating Dell Self-testFeatureCheckdialogappearson-screenifthemonitorcannotsenseavideosignal.

Occasionally, no warning message appears, but the screen is blank. This could also indicate that the monitor is not synchronizing with the computer. See
General Problems for more information.
Setting the Optimum Resolution
1. Right-click on the desktop and select Properties.
2. Select the Settings tab.
3. Set the screen resolution to 1440 x 900.
4. Click OK.
If you do not see 1440 x 900 as an option, you may need to update your graphics driver. Depending on your computer, complete one of the following
procedures.
If you have a Dell desktop or portable computer:
¡Go to support.dell.com, enter your service tag, and download the latest driver for your graphics card.
If you are using a non-Dell computer (portable or desktop):
¡Go to the support site for your computer and download the latest graphic drivers.
¡Go to your graphics card website and download the latest graphic drivers.
Using the Dell Soundbar (Optional)
The Dell Soundbar is a stereo two channel system adaptable to mount on Dell Flat Panel Displays. The Soundbar has a rotary volume and on/off control to
adjust the overall system level, a blue LED for power indication, and two audio headset jacks.










Setting the display resolution to 1440X900 (Optimal)
For optimal display performance while using the Microsoft Windows operating systems, set the display resolution to 1440 x 900 pixels by performing the
following steps:
1. Right-click on the desktop and click Properties.
2. Select the Settings tab.
3. Move the slider-bar to the right by pressing and holding left-mouse button and adjust the screen resolution to 1440X900.
4. Click OK.
Ifyoudonotsee1440X900 as an option, you may need to update your graphics driver. Please choose the scenario below that best describes the
computer system you are using, and follow the provided directions:
1: IfyouhaveaDell™desktoporaDell™portablecomputerwithinternetaccess.
2: IfyouhavenonDell™desktop,portablecomputer,orgraphiccard.
