This document provides updated information on the following topics for your Dell™
PowerVault™ 725N NAS system:

Removing and Installing the CERC Card
The CERC card is a half-length PCI adapter card that provides four master RAID-capable
IDE channels.
CAUTION: See your System Information Guide for complete information about
safety precautions, working inside the computer, and protecting against
electrostatic discharge.
1Turn off the system and attached peripherals, and disconnect the system from the
electrical outlet.
2Loosen the thumbscrew at the back of the system. See Figure 1-1.
3Slide the system cover backward about 2.5 cm (1 inch), grasp the cover on both sides,
and carefully lift the cover away from the system.

4Remove the cooling shroud. See Figure 1-2.
5Carefully lift the blower assembly and fan assembly out of the chassis, ensuring that
the connectors disconnect from the system board. See Figure 1-2 and Figure 1-3.

6Disconnect the CERC card’s cable from the backplane.
7Remove the plastic insert adjacent to the expansion slots. See Figure 1-4.

8Grasp the expansion card and carefully pull it away from the riser-card connector.
9Disconnect the cable from the CERC card.
10 Connect the cable that was supplied with the replacement CERC card to the four
connectors on the bottom of the replacement card in the order shown in Figure 1-5.
11 Route the CERC card’s cable between the guide tabs and the side of the chassis as you
lower the card into the system. See Figure 1-5.

12 Insert the CERC card firmly into the expansion-card connector on the riser board
until the card is fully seated, being careful not to disconnect the riser board from the
system board. See Figure 1-6.

13 Place the bottom edge of the cable into the guide slot directly under the connector on
the left side of the backplane (as viewed from the front of the system), and then attach
the cable to the connector on the backplane. See Figure 1-5.
14 Replace the plastic insert adjacent to the expansion slots. See Figure 1-4.
15 Align the blower assembly and fan assembly with the connectors on the system board
and the pegs on the chassis.
16 Push down on the blower assembly and fan assembly until they are properly seated on
the chassis pegs.

17 Attach the blower assembly and fan assembly connectors to the three-pin connectors
on the system board. See Figure 1-2 and Figure 1-3.
18 Replace the cooling shroud. See Figure 1-2.
19 Ensure that you did not leave tools or parts inside the system.
20 Place the cover over the sides of the chassis, and slide the cover forward until it snaps
into place. See Figure 1-1.
21 Tighten the thumbscrew at the back of the system to secure the cover. See Figure 1-1.
22 Reconnect the system and peripherals to the electrical outlet and turn on the system.
Removing and Installing the Power Supply
The system supports a single power supply located behind IDE hard drive 3.
To replace a failed power supply, perform the following steps.
CAUTION: See your System Information Guide for complete information about
safety precautions, working inside the computer, and protecting against
electrostatic discharge.
1Turn off the system and attached peripherals, and disconnect the system from the
electrical outlet.
2Unplug the power cable from the receptacle on the system’s back panel.
3Loosen the thumbscrew at the back of the system. See Figure 1-1.
4Slide the system cover backward about 2.5 cm (1 inch), grasp the cover on both sides,
and carefully lift the cover away from the system.
5Remove the plastic insert that secures the power supply inside the system. See
Figure 1-7.
6Disconnect the power-supply cable from the converter board. See Figure 1-7.
7Grasp the front of the power supply, push it toward the back of the system, and lift it
out of the chassis.
8Remove the two screws on the converter board, slide the board toward the back of the
system about 1 cm (0.5 inch), and lift it off the guide pins and out of the chassis. See
Figure 1-7.

9Install the replacement converter board:
aAlign the holes in the board with the guide pins on the bottom of the chassis,
lower the board into the system, and slide the board forward 1 cm (0.5 inch).
bReplace the two screws that you removed in step 8.
10 Install the replacement power supply by inserting the guide pins on the power supply
into the guide-pin slots on the chassis, lowering the power supply into the chassis, and
then pushing the power supply toward the front of the system. See Figure 1-7.
