FlameproofCombined Loudspeaker/Beacon
1)Introduction
TheBExCL150-05Disaflameproof combined loudspeaker/
beaconwhichiscertifiedtomeettherequirementsofthe
ATEX directive94/9/EC andtheIECExScheme.The
loudspeakersectionproducesa15 watt audiosignalandthe
beaconsectionproduces asynchronised visualwarning
signal. Therearethree loudspeakersectionversions,8ohm,
16 ohmor100VLinetransformer. On100Vlinetransformer
unitstherearefouroutputtappings andtheunitproduces
outputlevelsinthe112dB(A)range.Theunit can be used in
hazardousareaswherepotentiallyflammableatmospheres
may be present. The unit can be used inZone1andZone 2
areaswithgases ingroupsIIAandIIBandwithTemperature
ClassificationsofT1, T2, T3andT4.

6) Location andMounting
Thelocationoftheunit shouldbemadewithdueregardto
theareaoverwhichboththeloudspeakerandbeacon
warningsignalmustbeaudibleandvisible.Theunit should
onlybe fixedtoservicesthat can carrytheweight oftheunit.
Theunit shouldbesecurelyboltedtoasuitablesurfaceusing
the7mmdiameterbolt holesinthestainless steelUshaped
mountingbracket(see figure1). Theanglecan thenbe
adjusted inthedirectionsuchthatitswarningsignalcanbe
bothheardandseen.Thiscan be achievedbylooseningthe
twolarge bracketscrewsintheside oftheunit, whichallow
adjustmentinstepsof 18°.Oncompletionoftheinstallation
thetwolarge bracketadjustmentscrewsonthesideofthe
unitmustbe fullytightened toensurethattheunitcannot
moveinservice. moveinservice.
7) SafetyWarning (ElectrostaticHazard)
TheacoustichornsectionismadeofABSPlastic,therefore
toavoidapossibleELECTROSTACTICCHARGEtheunit
must onlybe cleanedwithadampcloth.
8) Access to theFlameproofEnclosure
Inordertoconnecttheelectricalsupplycablestothe unit it is
necessarytoremovethebeaconsectiontogainaccess to
theflameproof chamber. To achievethisremovethefourM6
hexagonsocketheadscrews(see figure2)andwithdrawthe
beaconsectiontakingextremecarenottodamagethe
flameproofjointsintheprocess.
Notethefour M6screwsareClass A4-80 stainlesssteel
andonlyscrewsofthiscategorycanbeusedonthese
sounders. Itisthereforeimportantthatthese screwsand
theirspringwashersarekeptinasafeplace during
installation.
Oncompletionofthecablewiringinstallationtheflameproof
jointsshouldbe inspected toensurethattheyareclean and
thattheyhavenotbeendamaged duringinstallation.Also
checkthattheearthbondingwirebetweenthetwocasting
sectionsissecureandthe‘O’ringsealisinplace.When
replacingthebeaconsectioncasting,ensurethatit issquare
withtheloudspeakersectionchambercastingbefore
inserting. Carefullypushthebeaconsectioninplace allowing
timeforthe airtobe expelled.Onlyafterthe beaconsection
castingisfullyinplace shouldthefour M6Stainless Steel A4-
80 coverboltsandtheirspringwasherbeinserted and
tightened down.If thebeaconsectionjamswhileit isbeing
inserted,carefullyremoveit andtryagain.Neveruse the
cover boltstoforcethebeaconsectioncastingintoposition.
Incaseof repair, contactthemanufacturerforinformationon
thedimensionsoftheflameproofjoints.
9) PowerAmplifierSelection
Itisimportantthattheloudspeakersectionisconnected toa
poweramplifierthathasoutputsthatarecompatibletothe
type ofloudspeakerbeingused.Loudspeakerswitha100V
Linematchingtransformerfitted mustbe connectedtoa
poweramplifierwitha100Vlineoutput. Lowimpedance8
ohmor16ohmloudspeakersmustbeconnectedto
amplifierswithasuitablelowimpedance output. When
selectingthecablesizeconsiderationmustbe giventothe
currentthat eachunit draws,thenumberof loudspeakerson
thelineandthelengthofthecableruns.

10) Beacon PowerSupplySelection
Itisimportantthatasuitablepowersupplyisusedtorun the
beaconunitsThepowersupplyselected musthavethe
necessarycapacitytoprovidetheinputcurrenttoall ofthe
beaconunitsconnectedtothesystem.
Thefollowingtableshowsthe inputcurrenttakenbythe

Theinputcurrenttothebeaconsectionwill varyaccordingto
thevoltage inputlevel. Thecurrentlevelsshownaboveare
fornominalinputvoltage.The12V,24Vand48VDCunits
haveaconvertercircuit andthereforetheinputcurrentlevel
will decreaseslightlyastheinputvoltage inincreasedand
will increase slightlyastheinput voltage isreduced.
Theabovetablealsoshowsthe maximumvoltagesatwhich
thebeaconsectioncan be operated.
11) CableSelection
Whenselectingthecablesizeconsiderationmustbegivento
theinputcurrentthateachunit draws(seetablesabove), the
numberofunitsonthelineandthelengthofthecableruns.
Thecablesizeselectedmusthavethenecessarycapacityto
provide theinputcurrenttoall oftheunitsconnectedtothe
line.
SAFETYWARNING: Iftheunit isusedathighambient
temperatures,i.e.over+40ºC,thenthecableentry
temperaturemay exceed +70ºCandthereforesuitableheat
resistingcables mustbeused,witharated service
temperatureofat least 110ºC.
12) Earthing
BothAC andDC unitsmustbeconnectedtoagood quality
earth.Theunitsareprovidedwithinternalandexternal
earthingterminals,whichareboth,locatedonthe beacon
sectionoftheunit (see figures2and3).
Whenusingtheexternalearthterminalacablecrimplug
mustbe used.Thecablelugshouldbe locatedbetweenthe
twoM5stainless steelflatwashers.TheM5stainlesssteel
springwashermustbe fixed betweentheouterflatwasher
andtheM5stainless steelnuttoensurethatthecablelugis
secured against looseningandtwisting.
Theinternalearthbondingwireensuresthatagoodquality
earthismaintained betweentheloudspeakersectioncasting
andthebeaconsectioncasting.
13) CableGlands
TheBExCL15-05Dunit hasdual cableglandentries which
haveanM20 x1.5entrythreadasstandardor aPG13.5
threadasaspecial. Onlycableglands approvedfor Ex‘d’
applicationscan be used, whichmust be suitablefor thetype
ofcablebeingused andalso meet therequirementsoftheEx
‘d’ flameproofinstallationstandardEN60079-14:2008/
IEC60079-14:2007.
SAFETYWARNING: Iftheunit isusedathighambient
temperatures,i.e.over+40ºC,thenthecableentry
temperaturemay exceed +70ºCandthereforesuitableheat
resistingcableglandsmustbe used,witharated service
temperatureofat least 110ºC.
IfahighIP(IngressProtection)ratingisrequired thena
suitablesealingwasher must be fitted under thecablegland.
Whenonlyonecableentryisusedtheotheronemustbe
closedwithanEx‘d’ flameproofblankingplug, whichmust be
suitablyapproved for theinstallationrequirements.
14) CableConnections
Thecombinedsounderbeaconunit BExCL15-05Dhas
separateprinted circuit boards intheloudspeakerand
beaconsections.Theterminalsforthe loudspeakerareon
theprinted circuit boardintheloudspeakersectionandthe
terminalsfor thebeaconareontheprinted circuit boardinthe
beaconsection(seefigures 4&5and6&7). Seesection8of
thismanualforaccesstotheenclosureandthewiring
diagramsat theendofthismanual.
LOUDSPEAKER CONNECTIONS(100VLine)
The100VLineloudspeakersarefittedwithafiveway
terminalblock.TerminalAiscommonandoneoftheother
terminalsB,C, DorEshouldbeselecteddependingonwhat
output level isrequired (seetablebelow).

Asinglewirewithacross sectionalareaofupto4mm²can
be connectedtoeachterminalwayorifan inputandoutput
wireisrequired two2.5mm²wires can be connected toeach
terminalway.Whenconnectingwires totheterminalsgreat
careshouldbetakentodress thewireso thatwhenthe
beaconsectionisinserted intothechamberthewires do not
exert excess pressureontheterminalblocks.Thisis
particularlyimportantwhenusingcables withlarge cross
sectional areassuchas2.5mm² andabove.
LOUDSPEAKER CONNECTIONS(LowImpedance)
BExCL15-05D8ohmand16ohmlowimpedance
loudspeakershavedualinputterminalsonthepcb assembly
forinputandoutputwiring.Acableofupto2.5mm²can be
connected toeachterminal. If dclinemonitoringisused cut
thelinkontheboard(see figure7andsection14ofthis
manual).

BEACONCONNECTIONS
Thecableconnectionsaremade intotheterminalblockson
theelectronicpcbassemblylocatedinthebeaconsection
enclosure.Afour-wayterminalblockisprovidedonbothAC
andDC beacons.Thereforetherearetwoliveterminalsand
twoneutralterminalsfortheinputandoutputwiringonAC
units.OntheDC unitstherearetwo+veterminalsandtwo-
veterminalsfor theinput andoutputwiring.
Wireshavingacross sectionalarea ofupto4mm²can be
connected toeachterminalway.Whenconnectingwires to
theterminalsgreat careshouldbe takentodress thewires so
thatwires do notexert excesspressureontheterminal
blocks.Thisisparticularlyimportantwhenusingcables with
large cross sectional areassuchas2.5mm².
15) Synchronised Operation
All BExCL15-05Dbeaconunitsthatareconnectedtothe
samesupplylinewill haveasynchronisedflashrateatone
flasheverysecond.Toensurethattheunitswill be
synchronisedcheckthatthepinheaderisnotfitted,i.e.the
twoheaderpinsarenotshorted together(seeFigures4and
5).
16) Flip / Flop Operation
Twounitscan be mounted close toeachothertoformaflip-
flopoperation,wherethebeaconswill flashalternately.To
achievethismodeofoperation,fit apinheadertotheflip-
flopheaderpinsontheelectronics board,i.e.thetwoheader
pinsareshortedtogether, (seefigures4and5) onone of the
twobeacons.Thefirstflashonthebeaconthathasthe
headerfittedwill be delayedby½second.Thetwobeacons
will thenflashalternatelyevery½asecond.

17) Beacon End ofLineMonitoring (DC Units)
OnBExCL15-05DDCunits,dc reverselinemonitoringcan
be usedonthebeaconsectionif required.All DC unitshave
ablockingdiode fittedintheirbeaconsupplyinputlines and
an endoflinemonitoringdiode oran endoflinemonitoring
resistorcan be connectedacrossthe+veand–veterminals.
Ifan endoflineresistorisusedit musthaveaminimum
resistancevalueof 3k3ohmsandaminimumwattage of 0.5
wattsoraminimumresistance valueof 500ohmsandamin.

18) LoudspeakerEndofLineMonitoring
OntheBExCL15-05Dloudspeaker section, dclinemonitoring
can be usedifrequired.Boththe100VLineunitsandthe
LowImpedanceunitshaveablockingcapacitorfitted.It
shouldbenotedthateachloudspeakerhas a1Mohmbleed
resistorconnectedacrosstheblockingcapacitorandthis
shouldbetakenintoaccountwhenselectingthevalueof the
endoflinemonitoringresistance.
Theendoflinemonitoringresistorcan beconnected across
theterminalsontheendoflineunit. Onthelowimpedance
unitscaremustbetakenwiththepolarityofthemonitoring
voltage.
