Chapter 1: Introduction
TS2 Film Interactive Touchpad (FIT) is a double-gang, in-wall system controller that uses a
touch film in lieu of hard buttons to perform all functions normally associated with a
keypad. Source and system control icons and function names are printed on
interchangeable backlit film transparencies. Each icon or function name corresponds to an
active “hot spot” that issues a control command and gives both audible and visual
confirmation to the user when pressed.
The TS2 is for use with ELAN Home Controllers running Core Module Software 5.0 or later
and is not interchangeable with the Olé2XL.
The touchpad features a 2" color OLED to provide source, sub-system and programming
feedback to the user.
Programming for the TS2 resides in the Home Controller and is accomplished with ELAN’s
Configuration Software.
Film Interactive Technology
The TS2 utilizes a polyester plastic film suspended over a glass panel, which is placed over
a changeable backlit film. Depressing the polyester film with a finger allows the film to
touch the glass panel underneath, generating a location signal that is read by the
electronics.

Chapter 2: System Design and Installation
Planning
Before installing the TS2, it is essential to have a detailed and accurate system design. Talk
with the homeowner to make sure all expectations and design goals are explored. The first
step to a good design is to map the system. It is advisable to mark up a copy of the house
floor plan with speaker, touchpad, touch panel, volume control, and equipment locations
etc. Make sure that all locations are decided upon before pre-wiring commences so that all
necessary wiring and installation hardware is in place.
It is essential that ALL system components are accounted for prior to the pre-wire stage.
After establishing design goals with the homeowner, make a detailed list of all components.
Include source equipment, keypads, touch panels, volume controls, amplifiers,
communications gear, etc. Gather up any IR remote controls that may be necessary for
final programming, or ensure that the IR codes for all equipment to be installed are
available in the ELAN Configuration Software.
Installation
TS2 is designed to fit into a standard 32 cu. in. two-gang electrical box. Consult local
building codes for specifics in your geographic area. The TS2 is not compatible with some
two-gang mud rings. ELAN recommends test fitting a unit prior to installation.
Pre-Wire
Each TS2 Touchpad has an RJ45 jack on the back to allow for easy connection. Run Cat-5
wire from the central equipment location (head-end) to the location where each Touchpad
will be installed.
Note: Maximum wire run is 1000 feet. The total of wire runs to all TS2s must not
exceed 2000 feet. In the event you need to exceed that limit, VIA!Net Repeaters must
be installed on the longest wire runs.

Page 11
Rough-In
Roughing-in the TS2 requires careful attention to the design plan made previously. See
System Design & Applications for a list of things to factor in to specific mounting locations
before deciding exactly where to place the unit. In order to avoid Electro-Magnetic
Interference (EMI), do not mount Touchpads close to light dimmers. Leave at least one
stud-bay open between Touchpads and dimmers (leave more space if multiple dimmers are
present). Avoid installing TS2 Touchpads in areas that will receive direct sunlight. Sunlight
can flood the IR receiver and make the system inoperative.
Do not mount Touchpads outdoors! Corrosion will damage them. ELAN does not warrant
TS2 Touchpads for outdoor use.
Mounting Height
The TS2 has no viewing angle limitations, so mounting height should be determined by the
average height of the user. Typical mounting height is 56-60 inches from the floor to the
bottom of the electrical box. This will provide optimum viewing for the largest number of
people.

Local IR Interface Port
Use this connector when utilizing the TS2’s Local Control features such as Local source IR
routing, Local IR Sensors, or Sense-enabled automated sequences (future use.)
IR-Emitter Out
The Local IR-EMITTER OUT is typically used to route IR to devices that are not part of the
main system, such as a receiver or DVD player located within the same room as the
touchpad. IR is routed to an emitter or IR distribution block connected to the Local IR
Output.
For example: You have local gear in a cabinet with closed doors; simply point the remote
at the IR receiver in the TS2.
Any IR signal that is received from the front IR-RECEIVER is sent out both the Local IR-
EMITTER OUT and the System IR Output. Pressing a button on the TS2 will not issue IR
commands from these outputs.
Connect IR-EMITTER OUT and -GROUND as shown below.

Page 16
IR Receiver In
The Local IR-RECEIVER IN is typically used to connect an external IR sensor to the
touchpad. Typical applications include a plasma-friendly IR sensor (ELAN IRS8EP, for
example) placed near a TV, or an auxiliary IR sensor placed in an area more convenient
than the location of the touchpad. IR signals that are received by the IR Input are sent out
both the Local IR-EMITTER OUT and the System IR Output.
Connect IR-RECEIVER IN, -GROUND and +12VOLTS OUT as shown below.
Note: In certain cases, the TS2’s built-in IR sensor can be flooded with plasma TV
interference or other ambient light interference. In this case, connect a plasma-friendly IR
sensor (ELAN IRS8EP, for example) to the Local IR Input and disable the built-in IR sensor
using the Service Menu
(See SERVICE MENU on page 25.)

Local Sense Input
(Future applications)
The LOCAL SENSE IN port allows a contact-closure to trigger IR or RS-232 sequences
programmed in the ELAN Configuration Software. Use a motion sensor to activate a
contact-closure and cause automated actions such as system power on, drapes closed,
and lights dimmed, for example.
Connect LOCAL SENSE IN and –GROUND to a contact-closure device as shown below.

Chapter 3: System Connections
HCxx Series System Controllers
TS2 to PPVN Connections
TS2 connection to any of the ELAN System Controllers (HC12, HC6, etc.) is accomplished
using the PPVN (VIA!NET Precision Panel.) A single Cat5 connects the TS2 to the VIA!NET
punch downs on the back of the PPVN and a Cat5 jumper connects from the front of the
PPVN to the VIA!NET port on the System Controller. The IR output on the front of the
PPVN may be connected to an IR distribution system or to the EXT IR IN of the Home
Controller as shown below.
Each PPVN will accommodate connections for up to four TS2s. PPVNs may be “daisy-
chained” to allow additional TS2s to be incorporated into the system. The TS2s are
powered by a 16V power supply connected to the PPVN. Each PPVN requires its own 16V
power supply.
The TS2 sends VIA!NET messages to the System Controller. The System Controller then
issues the proper commands for the sub-system being controlled.
Figure 3-1:
TS2 to PPVN

Page 19
Legacy Home Controllers
TS2 connection to any of the legacy Home Controllers (HomeBrick, MultiBrick) is
accomplished using the PPVN (VIA!NET Precision Panel) and an SC1. A single Cat5
connects the TS2 to the VIA!NET punch downs on the back of the PPVN and a Cat5 jumper
connects from the front of the PPVN to the VIA!NET port on the SC1.
There are two methods that may be used to connect the RS-232 port of the SC1 to the
HomeBrick or the MultiBrick. Each method will be shown in the following pages.
Each PPVN will accommodate connections for up to four TS2s. PPVNs may be “daisy-
chained” to allow additional TS2s to be incorporated into the system. The TS2s are
powered by a 16V power supply connected to the PPVN. Each PPVN requires its own 16V
power supply. The SC1 will receive its power from the PPVN’s power supply as well.
When using legacy Home Controllers the TS2 sends VIA!NET messages to the SC1 which
then converts them to RS-232 commands and sends them to the Home Controller. The
Home Controller then issues the proper commands for the sub-system being controlled.
Connection Method #1
This method requires the use of RJ45 to DB9 adapter HA-CB-328 (DB9 female to RJ45
female NULL adapter) and the SC1’s DB9 male to RJ45 female adapter to connect the SC1
to the Network Assembly.
1 – ELAN Standard Cat5 Cable
(See page 14 for pinout) 3 – SC1 DB9M to RJ45 Adapter
2 – Ethernet Standard Cat5 Cable 4 – HA-CB-328 DB9F to RJ45 NULL Adapter
