This manual provides step-by-step installation instructions and connec-
tion examples, along with basic user information for installation and ongo-
ing use of the VIA®!2-8.4 Wireless 8.4” Color LCD Touch Panel. This
manual is written for the user of this equipment.

Special Battery Cautions
The following are special precautions you should take when using and
handling batteries.
• Do not expose batteries to direct sunlight or extreme heat
• Do not submerge batteries in liquid
• Do not incinerate batteries
• Do not handle damaged or leaking battery packs
• Do not attempt to discharge batteries by short-circuiting them
• Do not attempt to charge batteries with a charger other than one
approved for use with the VIA!2-8.4
• Do not leave or operate the VIA!2-8.4 or VIA!2-8.4 batteries in an
excessively hot environment such as a closed vehicle under hot
sunshine or beside a fire, heater, or blow dryer. Do not leave the
VIA!2-8.4 exposed to excessive heat for any period of time.
Excessive heat exposure may result in melting, or cause the elec-
tronics/battery to overheat resulting in fire.
• Use only the supplied batteries and AC Adapter. Failure to follow
this instruction may result in battery burst or liquid leak, and may
cause fire, or injury.
• Store and Dispose of all batteries in accordance with the instruc-
tions contained herein. Never dispose of the battery by burning.
Any such action may result in excessive heating, explosion, or fire.
• Do not disassemble, modify, puncture, or strike any battery with
force or allow batteries to become wet. Any such action may
result in excessive heat, explosion, or ignition.
• If at anytime the VIA!2-8.4 batteries should smell, heat up,
become discolored, leak fluid, change shape, or experience an
abnormal occurrence, remove the battery from the VIA!2-8.4 and
do not use it.
• Should leaking fluid from the battery make contact with skin, eyes
or clothes, flush immediately with water. If there is contact with
eyes, seek medical treatment immediately. Failure to follow these
instructions may result in skin rash or significant eye damage.

Rechargeable Lithium-ion Battery Disposal
Unwanted lithium-on battery packs may be returned to the battery manu-
facturer for disposal.
Caring For the VIA!2-8.4
To clean the VIA!2-8.4’s screen, first use a soft dry cloth to remove con-
tamination. If dirt is still present, use a damp cloth that has been squeezed
of excess water. If dirt is still present, spray a non-abrasive very mild or
highly diluted glass cleaning solution on to a damp cloth and re-clean. Do
not spray directly on the panel screen. Use of strong chemicals and/or
some cleaning agents may discolor the polyester film that makes up the
touch screen.
It is important to properly care for your VIA!2-8.4 wireless panel. Follow
these guidelines to ensure your device is preserved and protected.
• Avoid scratching the screen by always using the supplied stylus
or a plastic-tipped pen intended for use with touch sensitive
screens.
• Do not expose the VIA!2-8.4 to rain, liquids or moisture for an
extended period of time.
• Do not expose the VIA!2-8.4 to temperature extremes.
• Do not place any objects on top of the VIA!2-8.4 to prevent screen
damage.
Operating Temperatures & Environments
• Operating Temperature: 32-104°F (0-40° C)
• Humidity: 0-90%
Precautions
• Always exercise care when operating and handling the VIA!2-8.4.
• Do not apply excessive pressure to the display screen.
• ELAN strongly recommends that you do not touch the display
screen directly with your fingers. Oil from your fingertips may be
difficult to remove. Please use the stylus provided.
• Avoid exposing the panel screen to direct sunlight or other heat
source. Where possible, the VIA!2-8.4 should be facing away from
direct lighting to reduce glare.
• DO NOT use any 12 VDC adapter other than the one provided with
the device or acquired from the manufacturer or its distributors, to
recharge or power the touch panel.

• In the unlikely event that smoke, abnormal noise, or strange odor
is present, immediately power the VIA!2-8.4 off. Please report the
problem to your device provider immediately.
• Never attempt to disassemble the VIA!2-8.4. You will lose any
product warranty on the VIA!2-8.4.

VIA!2-8.4 Power Source
The primary sources of VIA!2-8.4's power are the internal and optional
external battery packs. A DC-in jack connects the 12 VDC adapter with the
VIA!2-8.4 to recharge the battery pack. Both the VIA!2-8.4 and the charg-
ing cradle are equipped with a DC-in jack. The 12 VDC adapter can be
connected directly to the VIA!2-8.4 for charging and operation or con-
nected to the cradle so the battery packs may charge and the unit oper-
ates while the VIA!2-8.4 is docked in the cradle. Follow all precautions
listed in this manual when using, charging or disposing of batteries.
CAUTION:
Severe personal injury and equipment damage can result by not
following proper charging procedures. Recharge the panel using only
the 12 VDC adapter designated for the VIA!2-8.4.
VIA!2-8.4 Display Screen
The VIA!2-8.4's specially enhanced display screen makes it the premium
choice in wireless displays. It provides SVGA (800x600) resolution on a
high brightness transmissive display with touch screen, while keeping
power draw to a minimum. The stylus for the VIA!2-8.4's touch screen is
located in the upper right corner of the panel.

Chapter 1: VIA!®2-8.4 Wireless 8.4” Color LCD
Touch Panel
Introduction
The VIA!®2-8.4 is a wireless 8.4” color LCD touch panel remote control for
the ultimate in home theater control and local zone control. The VIA!2-8.4
Wireless 8.4” Color LCD Touch Panel provides the freedom to control your
home theater A/V, along with lighting, drapes, blinds and even tempera-
ture control from anywhere in your home theater using standard 802.11b/g
WiFi wireless networks. It is incorporated into your home theater solution
using a router, a wireless access point (WAP) and an ELAN VIA!2-SS1 Sys-
tem Station. As of this writing, an ELAN VIA!-SC4 System Controller would
be required for 2-way RS-232 feedback and control.

VIA!2-8.4 graphics are designed to operate similarly to ELAN’s award win-
ning VIA! family of products. Its specially enhanced display screen makes
it the premium choice in wireless displays, providing SVGA (800x600) res-
olution on a high brightness transmissive display with touch screen, while
keeping power draw to a minimum.
The VIA!2-8.4 Wireless Touch Panel sits in a desktop cradle for support
and charging.
On the desktop cradle, you will find the following interfaces: a DC-in jack
for the 12 VDC adapter, two USB ports for keyboard and mouse input, (for
future applications).

Always seat the VIA!2-8.4 securely onto the cradle by placing the touch
panel directly over the connectors in the top of the cradle, holding the cra-
dle with the other hand and inserting the VIA!2-8.4 downward until the bot-
tom of the VIA!2-8.4 meets the cradle. When seated correctly the battery
LED will light blue.
NOTE: Two hands should be used when seating and
removing the VIA!2-8.4 Wireless Touch Panel from the
desktop cradle.
Touch Screen Technology
The VIA!2-8.4 Wireless Touch Panel runs on a high-performance proces-
sor. It is equipped with 64 MB of Flash ROM memory, 128 MB of SDRAM
and operates on Windows CE 5.0. It features an 8.4" SVGA (800x600) bril-
liant, touch-enabled display and with the internal battery pack, weighs in
at just under 2 pounds.

Operation
The VIA!2-8.4 Wireless Touch Panel is simple and intuitive to operate.
Each source can be custom programmed to work just the way the user
desires.
ELAN recommends using the provided stylus to operate the touch screen.
Avoid touching with your fingers, as oil from your fingertips can be difficult
to remove. The stylus for the VIA!2's touch screen is located in the upper
right corner of the panel.

Indicates power is on and VIA!2-8.4 is active.
Also indicates unit is docked in the desktop cra-
dle. A solid blue LED means panel is fully
charged, a blue LED flashing means battery is
charging. A solid amber LED means battery is
low, a flashing amber LED indicates battery
power critically low and the panel is preparing to
go in to turn off.

Button
Standby/Resume:
Push/release of the Power button toggles
between Standby & Resume. The system can-
not enter into Standby mode again within 30
seconds after Resuming.
Power On-Off/Boot:
Use the Power button to restart the VIA!2-8.4 in
the unlikely event of device lock-up. To execute,
push and hold the button until the unit powers
off (approx 4 seconds). Push Power again to
restart.
E Speakers Audible click feedback.

Control Surfaces
The VIA!2-8.4 Wireless Touch Panel uses three different display styles or
“motifs”. Motif styles A and B display the Source Select buttons on the left
side of the screen. Motif style C places the Source Select buttons across
the top of the screen just below the message bar. Since every VIA!2-8.4
Touch Panel can be designed to reflect your personal preferences and the
type of source components you are using, button placement in the figure
below may be different from the touch panel you have designed.

location regardless of what Source is
selected, giving you room Volume UP/
DOWN, MUTE and two additional com-
mands (i.e. Channel UP/DOWN).
* Only available on Motif Style A & B.
When using Motif Style C, Volume Up/Down and Channel Up/Down is accom-
plished using the Multiple Function button located on the front panel.

Desktop Cradle
The VIA!2-8.4 comes with a convenient desktop cradle/charging station
that holds the touch panel and charges the battery.
NOTE: Always carefully seat the VIA!2-8.4 securely onto the
cradle using two hands to avoid damaging the contact
pins on the cradle.
12 VDC Adapter
You can also charge the battery by connecting the 12 VDC adapter directly
into the 12V (DC in) port on the VIA!2-8.4.
