Overview
This guide explains how to set up and initialize the EMC®Disk Library DL4106,
where the DL4106 hardware components are rackmounted and cabled, and shipped
from the factory in EMC-supplied 40U-60 cabinets.
Refer to the Services website (http://www.cs.isus.emc.com/csweb2/dgweb/
DiskLibrary/index.htm) or to the Powerlink® website (http://Powerlink.EMC.com)
for the latest EMC Disk Library DL4100, DL4106, DL4200, DL4206, DL 4400, and
DL4406 setup and cabling, and service documentation.
Only an authorized service provider should perform the procedures in this guide.
The Disk Library server (DL server) is also referred to as the DL engine.

Step 1
Prepare your environment
Make sure the site where you intend to set up the DL4106 Disk Library has the
following:
❒Adequate network wiring to provide the DL server and each storage-system
storage processor (SP) with a management port Ethernet connection.
❒Appropriate electrical wiring in place to accommodate the cabinet’s power
cables. For EMC cabinets, see the Site Preparation Guide for CX3-Series Storage
Systems in a 40U-C Cabinet (on the EMC Powerlink website). To support all of the
storage system’s high-availability features, the cabinet must receive power from
at least two discrete circuits.
❒A host connected to the same network as the storage system to manage and
monitor the storage system. We recommend the following minimum
configuration for the management workstation:
• Intel compatible 500 MHz computer with at least 512 MB RAM and 50 MB of free
disk space.
• Video driver resolution set to a minimum of 1024x768 with 256 colors and small
fonts.
• Network interface controller.
• US keyboard and pointing device.
• DB-9 COM port connector.
• Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP Professional.
• TCP/IP network connection to each storage processor in the CX3-80 storage
system that the customer will be managing and monitoring.
• Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Standard Edition 1.5.0_06 installed. However,
EMC recommends JRE 1.6.0 due to known performance issues with prior versions
of the JRE. Optimally, other JREs should be uninstalled and there must be only
one JRE installed on the station running the CLARalert® Suite.
• Web browser software: Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5 or greater,
Netscape Navigator version 6.0 or greater, Mozilla 1.1 or greater, or Firefox 1.0 or
greater.
IMPORTANT Updates, service tools and current documentation require
Internet access to a support website.

Prepare your environment
❒A service laptop or customer workstation to initialize the storage system, set up
with the following:
• Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP Professional. However,
EMC recommends JRE 1.6.0 due to known performance issues with prior versions
of the JRE. Optimally, other JREs should be uninstalled and there must be only
one JRE installed on the station running the CLARalert Suite.
• Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Standard Edition 1.5.0_06 installed.
• Web browser software: Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5 or greater,
Netscape Navigator version 6.0 or greater, Mozilla 1.1 or greater, or Firefox 1.0 or
greater.
•Navisphere
®Storage System Initialization Utility from the CX3-Series Core Server
Support Products CD Version 6.26.X
• Service providers can download the latest Management UI from the EMC service
website. After you download the Management UI, save it to your desktop.

The following cables ship in an accessory box, or are customer-provided as
indicated:
❒Ethernet LAN RJ45 cable (one per SP and a maximum of four for the DL server)
for storage-system management (customer-provided)
❒One LAN 10/100BaseT crossover cable for configuration with the service laptop
❒Power cords – one per power supply
❒A maximum of ten 5-meter copper Fibre Channel HSSDC2-HSSDC2 cables for
back-end connection between cabinets for a full DL4106 configuration with three
cabinets
❒A maximum of eight Fibre Channel optical cables for DL4106 host/switch
connections (customer-provided)

Step 4
Verify storage-system back-end connections
Use the information below and the illustration on the following page to verify the
bus (loop) cabling between the SPE and the DAE3Ps. Make sure you connect the
back-end cabling between the cabinets.
The illustration depicts a complete DL4106 configuration with three cabinets. The cabinet with
the CX3-80 storage system and the DL engine is in the middle with the first spillover cabinet
on the left, and the second spillover cabinet on the right.
A DL4106 configuration with fewer DAE3Ps looks different from the illustration shown on the
following page.
The CX3-80 SPE2 supports four redundant Fibre Channel back-end buses: 0, 1, 2 and
3 from SP A and 0, 1, 2, and 3 from SP B. On each bus the two independent loops
from SP A and SP B are paired, and share access to the same dual-port disk drives.
Each CX3-80 storage processor has four back-end (BE) ports that connect to the
corresponding primary (PRI) ports on the first disk enclosure in each bus. The disk-
array enclosure expansion (EXP) ports connect to the next PRI ports in their loops.
For the system to boot and operate, the first DAE3P – connected to BE 0 on both SPs
– must have enclosure address (EA) 0. A DAE3P with boot disks and the CX3-80
operating system is always assigned enclosure address 0 prior to shipment.
Each DAE3P in a bus requires a unique EA. The first DAE3P has an EA of 0, since it is
the first EA on the bus (bus 0). A second DAE3P (the first on bus 1) also has an EA of
0; a DAE3P connected to BE 2 or BE 3 is also EA 0 on that bus. Numbering
sequentially, the second EA on each bus is 1, the third 2, the fourth 3, and so on.

Verify power settings and connections
1. Verify that the cabinet master (power distribution panel) switches are in the
off position.
2. Verify that the power switch on each SPS is off.
3. For high availability, verify that A and B power cords on each enclosure are
connected to different power strips.
4. Verify that all power connections are correct and fully seated:
• Standby power supply A (SPS A) connects to the SPS serial port (marked with a
battery symbol) on SP A; SPS B connects to SP B.
• The AC power cord for power supply (PS) A connects to SPS A, and for PS B
connects to SPS B.
• The SPSs connect to separate power distribution units (PDUs) in the cabinet.
• Power/cooling module A in the first DAE3P (EA 0, bus 0) in the system connects
to SPS A, and power/cooling module B in the first DAE3P connects to SPS B.
Subsequent DAE3Ps connect directly to the cabinet’s power distribution units.
Make sure power/cooling modules A and B connect to different PDUs.
5. Connect the cabinet AC power cables to the power outlets in the customer’s
facility.
Connect the power cables on the right and left side of the cabinet to different
branch circuits. All active power cables must be connected to an appropriate power
source. Connecting to only one power source will degrade the system’s high
availability.

Connect the DL4106 management ports
1. Using CAT 5 or better Ethernet cables, connect each SP to the same subnet as
the host from which you will manage the storage system (management host).
Connecting the storage system to a shared management LAN
2. Connect the Ethernet ports on the DL server, eth2, eth3, eth4, and eth5 to the 10/
100/1000 Ethernet switch in the customer’s environment. These ports (bond0
ports) share an IP address and, therefore, must be on the same subnet. Based on
the customer’s requirement you can connect more than one port, which will
improve throughput.

Start the storage system
1. Verify that all power supplies are connected to AC power. Turn on the power
switch for each SPS.
2. Unplug the DL server power cables if they are connected to power.
3. Turn on the master switch/circuit breakers for each cabinet/rack power strip. (In
standard EMC cabinets, master switches are on the power distribution panels.)

Start the storage system
The storage system may take several minutes to complete powerup. Amber warning
lights will flash during power on self-test (POST) and then go off.
The front fault light and the SPS recharge lights commonly stay on for several minutes while
the SPS units fully charge.
If the amber lights on the front or back of the storage system remain on, make sure
the system is correctly cabled and then refer to the “Troubleshooting” section on the
CX3 series service page on the EMC Powerlink website
(http://Powerlink.EMC.com).

Initialize the storage system
To initialize the storage system, you must configure the management network
interfaces for the storage system’s storage processors (SPs) with the Navisphere
Storage System Initialization Utility.
Requirements for initialization
Make sure you have the following:
❒FLARE®Operating Environment (OE) software version 03.26.080.5.yyy or higher
installed on the storage system. A card that ships with the storage system
indicates the FLARE version that is installed.

❒The completed CDL configuration planning worksheet on page 4 with the following
information:
❒A static IP address and name for each storage processor in the storage system.
❒The subnet mask of the LAN to which each storage-system management port and
host is connected.
❒The default gateway address of the LAN to which each storage-system
management port is connected.
❒The security settings information which includes storage-system username and
password.

Initialize the storage system
❒The hardware serial number of the storage system, which is located on a label on
the front of the storage system behind the bezel, as shown below:
❒The CX3-Series Core Server Support Products CD that shipped with the storage
system.
We recommend that you install and run the storage system initialization utility on a host but
you can run this utility from the CX3-Series Core Server Support Products CD.
Install the Navisphere Storage System Initialization Utility
Use the CX3-Series Core Server Support Products CD and install the storage system
initialization utility on a host connected to the same subnet as the storage system.
Run the storage system initialization utility on the management host
After the storage system is fully powered up for the first time, you must run the
Navisphere Storage System Initialization Utility to initialize the storage system.
Initialization sets management network parameters and security for the storage
system so that you can manage it over the LAN.

Initialize the storage system
1. Before continuing, make sure that the storage system is powered up, that each
SP power light (rear of enclosure) is steady green, and that no amber lights are
blinking.
2. Start the initialization utility:
From the toolbar, select
Start > Programs > EMC > Navisphere > Navisphere Storage System

3. Read the license agreement, and accept it by clicking I accept and Next.
The utility automatically scans the subnet for storage systems. When the
discovery operation is complete, the utility lists, by hardware serial number (refer
to the picture for the location of the serial number), all uninitialized and
initialized CLARiiON® storage systems that it found. If the discovery operation
did not find the storage system that you are installing, verify that the storage
system’s management ports are properly cabled to the LAN on which the host
resides. The storage system and host must both reside on the same subnet.
4. Select the Disk Library storage system to initialize. In the Uninitialized Systems
list, select the storage system’s serial number and click Next.
