The typical WAP client is a small, portable evice which is connecte to a wireless network.
This inclu es mobile phones, pagers, smart phones, PDAs an other small evices. In these
evices, you have a limite user interface, low memory an computing power compare to
esktop an laptop computers. The WAP browser in the T20e is compliant with WAP 1.1
inclu ing security accor ing to WTLS class 2. It is esigne for WML an cannot rea or inary
HTML pages, but it is suitable for interaction with customer services, e. g. ticket reservation. It
is also han y when you want to access text-base information, such as timetables, share prices
an exchange rates an Internet banking an other interactive services.
The built-in WAP browser gives the user portable, fast an secure access to a wi e variety of
services, with the possibility of personalize services. WAP in the T20e offers new opportuni-
ties to companies an service provi ers:
Bearer types The T20e accesses WAP over a stan ar GSM Data connection as well as
over SMS. (Network- epen ent services.)
Connection-oriente Connection-less or connection-oriente WAP can be selecte by the user.
Connection-oriente WAP provi es browsing with a high reliability.
Ban wi th efficiency One of the key a vantages WAP has over text-base HTML pages on
mobile evices, is the ban wi th efficiency for communication. This is
ue partly to the fact that the WAP application is communicate to the
wireless evices in the form of binary enco e ata.
Provi e settings Using SMS messages, configuration settings can be sent over the air,
OTA, so that the user oes not nee to configure the WAP access settings
manually.
Creating WAP services Creating a WAP service is no har er than creating an Intranet/Internet
service to ay since WML an WMLScript are base on well-known
Internet technology. New market segments can be a resse by launch-
ing innovative mobile Value A e Services.
Using stan ar tools It is possible for the service creator to use stan ar tools like ASP or CGI
to generate content ynamically. You can utilize existing investments in
atabases etc. that are the basis of existing Internet services. Create a ser-
vice once an make it accessible on a broa range of wireless networks.
Maintain customer base You can a apt existing Internet services to WAP. The actual binary
enco ing can be han le by the WAP Gateway which makes it possible
to create WAP applications using the text-base language WML an
other tools. In fact, existing HTML-base applications on the Internet can
be viewe in the WAP browser, if an automatic conversion is performe
in the WAP Gateway.
Improve pro uctivity Improve an simplify the communication flow within an organization by
making information available to mobile users. A company or organiza-
tion can use a WAP gateway to provi e a secure connection to the com-
pany network for their users.
The WAP profiles The T20e hol s several WAP profiles, each with a group of network set-
tings an a home page. If you provi e a corporate WAP service on your
Intranet, it is useful to enter an Intranet WAP profile in user phones. The
WAP profile hol s network settings an user i entification. The users
switch easily between the corporate services an WAP services on the
Internet, simply by switching WAP profile.

The WAP Gateway provi es services in the company’s Intranet, a banking or stock tra ing ser-
vice on the Internet, or access to other WAP applications on web a resses anywhere on the
Internet. A Gateway is i entifie by an IP number or by a phone number, epen ing on access
type.
The T20e supports both connection-less an connection-oriente WAP over GSM Data. The
user can select which metho to use. In general, connection-oriente means that the connection
between the WAP browser in the phone an the WAP Gateway is maintaine in a session with
error recovery services. This gives a high reliability with a re uce risk of errors in the transmis-
sion, an improves efficiency in WAP browsing.
The T20e is base on the WAP 1.1 specifications where security functionality is specifie with a
technology calle Wireless Transport Layer Security (WTLS).
The WAP protocols that han le the connection, its transport an its security are structure in
protocol layers. The security is han le by the WTLS layer operating above the transport proto-
col layer. The WTLS layer is mo ular an there are WTLS classes that in icate which security
level is supporte by the application.
• WTLS class 1 specifies an enco ing of the information.
• WTLS class 2 inclu es class 1 an in a ition a server authentication, where server certifi-
cates are nee e in the phone (access lock).
• WTLS class 3 inclu es class 2 an in a ition a client certification, where client certificates
are nee e for the user (signature lock).
The T20e supports WTLS class 2, an it is equippe with a number of certificates. An access
lock is nee e when accessing certain WAP sites. The user is aske to enter it before a secure
WAP connection is establishe .

To simplify configuring WAP settings in a number of phones, all settings can be sent as an SMS
message to each phone. This makes it easy for an operator, a service provi er or a company to
istribute settings for Internet/Intranet, an WAP, without having to configure each phone man-
ually. This also makes it easy to upgra e the services provi e to the users, without the nee for
users to perform any manual configuration.
• The OTA configuration message is istribute via SMS point-to-point
• The setup information is a binary enco e XML message, accor ing to WBXML. To
receive information about OTA specifications, please contact your local Ericsson representa-
tive for consumer pro ucts. A configurator that utilizes OTA provisioning can be teste on
the Ericsson Mobile Internet
• The user is not alerte about new settings until the ongoing browsing session en s. Further-
more, settings are not change uring an ongoing browsing session
• The necessary user interaction is limite to receiving an accepting/rejecting the configura-
tion message, an selecting which WAP profile to allocate the settings to
• Security can be han le using a keywor i entifier isplaye on the screen as a share secret
between the SMS sen er an the receiver. It is important that the user has a way to verify
that the configuration message is authentic
To perform the WAP configuration of a single phone it is suggeste to use the step-by-step WAP
configurator provi e on the Ericsson Mobile Internet. The configurator utilizes OTA provi-
sioning, an it is available on http://mobileinternet.ericsson.com, no login require . The WAP
settings can also be customize by the operator.
A manual configuration is ma e using the menu system in the phone. This is escribe in the
User’s Gui e.

For a company or an organization, it can be useful to restrict phone calls. Fixe Dialling allows
you to preset a number of igits, for example area co es. This restricts the user to making calls
only to numbers which use the preset igits as lea ing igits. Fixe Dialling makes use of the
PIN2, an it requires fixe ial fiel s on the SIM Car . Check with your Operator about this
feature.
Restricte calls allows you to block outgoing or incoming calls in certain situations, for exam-
ple international calls.

The SIM Application Toolkit (SIM AT) is a smartcar -centric metho of eploying programs
that apply only to GSM an to SMS an USSD transports. Programs must be istribute on
smartcar s. WAP is an Internet-centric metho of eploying programs that is in epen ent of
network technology. Programs an content are kept centrally on web servers an ownloa e as
require . While there is some overlap, WAP is a particularly goo choice when eploying pro-
grams that also have an HTML version for esktop use. Work is currently un erway on buil ing
interfaces between the two technologies.
For an operator, a company or service provi er, SIM AT offers a powerful way to eploy pro-
grams an services to users, without the nee for new or upgra e equipment. All necessary
setup an programming is istribute to the users over the air, irectly to their phones. In the
T20e, a separate menu is available for functions resi ing on the SIM car . These can inclu e
submenus for controlling functions, an also functions which allow the phone to initiate calls,
sen ata, an isplay information for the user.
