Shouldpaving materialorotherresiduebeadheredtothesensingelements,cleanthesurfacewithaScotch™BritePad. Donot
usemetallicorcourseabrasivesordetergents.
Thoroughlycheckthesystembeforeplacingitinservice.Ourexperienceshows thatinstallationerrorscausethemajorityof
problems.Frequentlyencounteredproblemsincludewiringerrorsandimproperwaterproofing.Simpleelectricaltestsand visual
inspectionsidentifytheseproblems.
Independentofweatherconditions,thefunctionaloperationofaninstalledSIT–6Esensormaybedeterminedusingadigital
voltmeter(DVM)andatenpound(4.54kg)bagofcrushedice, inthefollowingmanner:
Followingthisproceduremayresult intheengagementoftheheatersystem.Aftercompletion, itisrecommendedtopower
downthesystemtoreset.If heaterengagementcancausedamage, it isup tothepersononsitetodisconnecttheheaters.
1.WiththeDVMsetthe100VACrange,verifythesensorsupplyvoltagebyconnectingthenegative(-) testleadtothesensor
blackwireandthepositive(+)testleadtothesensorredwire.ADVM readingbetween22-28 VACor24-30VDCis
acceptable.AnACcomponentlessthan28VACisallowedwithaDCvoltageintheproperrange.
2.Withthenegative(-) testleadremaininginplace,reconnectthepositive(+)testleadtothesensorwhitewireandcon rm
thereisanidenticalvoltagepresent.
3.Placetheentiresupplyofcrushediceatopthesensorand allowatimelapseinexcess of20 minutesbeforeobserving
thatnovoltageisindicatedby theDVM.(Anominaltemperaturebelow38°F (1°C) mustbedetectedbeforethesensor’s
normally-opencontactisclosed. If thesensorsurface temperaturewasexcessivepriortocommencingthisprocedure, it will
benecessarytoextendthecooldowntime intervalbyasmuchasanadditional20minutes.)
4.Withsatisfactoryresults, disconnecttheDVMandrestoreallsensorwiring connections.
You mayelecttode-energize thesnow/icemeltingsystemheatersattheseason’send,howeverit issuggestedtheSIT–6Esensor’s
powersupplybemaintainedcontinuously.Theheatenergydissipatedfromtheinternalheater,althoughmodest,willenhance the
long-termreliabilityoftheSIT–6E sensor.
