Creating a rebate in wood using the planer

Special application using the HL 850 EB planer

Rebates are often needed for a variety of applications in furniture

making and interior finishing. This illustrated guide shows you how

to create these using the planer and tells you what you need to look

out for. It contains detailed explanations of the function of the

planing head and how to achieve the right rebate depth.

Description

The Festool HL 850 electronic planer can do everything a standard planer can do, from planing wood to a smooth finish to milling off edges, and more besides.

The superior technical feature of this planer is the planing head mounted on one side. This means that users can plane out rebates in wood to almost any depth.

This illustrated guide shows how rebates can be created using the HL 850 planer.

Tools/accessories

The following tools and accessories are recommended for use in this application example: For rebating,

you need the HL 850 EB-Plus planer. All accessories are included in the scope of delivery.

Procedure

We recommend the use of a dust extractor with a large container such as the

Festool CLEANTEC CTM 36 E. This can be fitted with a pre-separator to collect the

chips. In the long run, this is more economical than SELFCLEAN filter bags.

Set the desired rebate depth. To do this, measure the exact distance from the

planer foot to the rebate depth stop. Place the tool on its side so that the rebate

depth stop faces upwards; this will enable you to plane a precise rebate in the wood.

Set the chip thickness to 1 mm. During the first work step, guide the planer so that

the parallel side fence fits precisely along the wood. The first work step is key to

ensuring that the rebate is precisely positioned.

From the second work step onwards, the edge of the planer foot is placed against

the rebate edge. The parallel side fence is therefore only necessary at the start of

planing and can then be removed.

Ensure that the edge of the planer foot is always guided exactly along the rebate

edge.

When the rebate depth stop is against the workpiece, the set rebate depth has been

reached.

If the rebate depth stop is not used, the rebate can be planed as deep as you

choose.
