1 Introduction
The PRIMERGY RX800 S2 server system offers unique performance density
by packing up to four Intel®Xeon™ MP dual-core processors into a 3-height
(3U) building block (node) which can be combined up to a 16-way configuration
consisting of four nodes. It is matchless in its approach to system scalability,
designed to enable enterprises to exactly match their current investments to
actual performance requirements and grow as requirements increase over time.
The PRIMERGY RX800 S2 satisfies highest performance requirements. It is
ideally suited for centralized enterprise class data center environments. Appli-
cation areas are especially large database server and system platforms for
server consolidation (for VMware ESX server). With its unique flexibility and
scalability, the PRIMERGY RX800 S2 is ideal where future-proof servers are
required to satisfy growing performance demands.
Each node offers 6 PCI-X 2.0 slots and is equipped with a CD/DVD drive and
up to 6x2,5" hot-plug SAS hard disks. Full redundancy for power supplies and
fans as well as phase redundancy for AC line input is supported. Hard disks,
PCI-X adapters, memory and fans are hot-pluggable. Local system monitoring
is supported by LEDs indicating all relevant system operation and failure states.
Security functions in BIOS-Setup and on the I/O Board protect the data on the
server against manipulation. The lockable door of the rack offers additional
security.
The PRIMERGY RX800 S2 is supplied as a rack-mounted model and occupies
three height units in the rack.

1.1 Overview of the Documentation

server system.

Concept and Target Group of this Manual
This operating manual describes how to install, commission and operate your
PRIMERGY RX800 S2 server system, and how to replace hot-plug modules.
It is intended for those responsible for installing the hardware and ensuring that
the system runs smoothly.
It is necessary to have a knowledge of hardware and data transmission, as well
as basic knowledge of the operating system used.

1.2 Features
Performance
Impressive performance using the latest microprocessor technology. The basic
configuration is a 4-way building block (node), thus supporting up to four Intel®
Xeon™ MP dual-core microprocessors. In the basic configuration, the system
comes with two microprocessors. You can install up to four microprocessors to
further enhance performance and symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) capability.
Scalability
Scalability redefines performance and investment protection by giving you the
ability to expand and scale the system as needs change. Scalability capabilities
include SMP expansion of up to four microprocessors, and resource configura-
tions for optimum performance.
The system is scalable and can be connected to multiple nodes so that you can
share resources between them. Starting from the 4-way base unit, adding a 4-
way extension unit, an 8-way (2-node) configuration is formed. Two 8-way
configuration sets may be connected to form a 16-way (4-node) configuration.
Large system memory
In the basic configuration, either 2 GB or 4 GB of memory is installed,
depending on the type of memory installied. Each node supports up to 32 GB
(64 GB) of system memory. The memory controller supports error correcting
code (ECC) for up to 16 industry-standard PC2-3200, 333 megahertz (MHz),
1.8 V, 240-pin, registered, double-data-rate (DDR) II, synchronous dynamic
random access memory (SDRAM) dual inline memory modules (DIMMs).
Additional features are Memory Scrubbing, Chipkill™, Redundant Bit Steering,
hot-plug Memory and Memory Mirroring.
Memory Scrubbing
Memory Scrubbing is an automatic regular test of all the system memory that
detects and reports memory errors that might be developing before they cause
a system outage.
When an error is detected, Memory Scrubbing determines if the error is recov-
erable or not. If it is recoverable, Redundant Bit Steering is enabled and the data
that was stored in the damaged locations is rewritten to a new location. The

error is then reported so that preventative maintenance can be performed. As
long as there are enough good locations to allow the proper operation of the
server, no further action is taken other than recording the error in the error logs.
If the error is not recoverable, then Memory Scrubbing sends an error message
to the LED Diagnostic Path, which then turns on the proper lights and LEDs to
guide you to the damaged DIMM. If Memory Mirroring is enabled, then the
mirrored copy of the data in the damaged DIMM is used to refresh the new
DIMM once it is installed.
Redundant Bit Steering
This is the equivalent of a hot-spare drive in a RAID array. Redundant Bit
Steering is based in the memory controller, giving the server the ability to sense
when a chip on a DIMM has failed and route the data around the failed chip.
Redundant Bit Steering reassigns memory bits to new locations within memory
when recoverable errors have been detected. Once a recoverable error is found
by Memory Scrubbing, Redundant Bit Steering writes the data that was to be
stored in the damaged memory locations to spare memory locations within the
same DIMM.
Memory Scrubbing and Redundant Bit Steering work in conjunction with
each other and do not require Memory Mirroring to be enabled to work
properly.
Memory Mirroring
Memory Mirroring allows you to improve the memory reliability of the server by
creating a mirror of the data in memory port one and storing it in memory port
two.
When Memory Mirroring is enabled in BIOS code, the data that is written to
memory is stored in two locations. One copy is kept in the memory port one
DIMMs, while a second copy is kept in the memory port two DIMMs. During the
execution of the read command, the data is read from the DIMM with the least
amount of reported memory errors through Memory Scrubbing, which is
enabled with Memory Mirroring.
For Memory Mirroring to work, you must have the same amount of
memory in both memory ports.

LED Diagnostic Path
The LED Diagnostic Path feature provides LEDs to assist in isolating problems
with the server. A light on the Operator Information Panel is lit if an unusual
condition or a problem occurs. If this happens, you can look at the LEDs inside
the Operator Information Panel drawer and those visible through the cover of the
server to isolate the cause. Under some circumstances, you might need to
remove the cover and view LEDs on the printed circuit boards to pinpoint the
source of a problem.
Integrated network environment support
The server comes with an integrated Broadcom Dual Gigabit Ethernet
controller. This Ethernet controller has an interface for connecting to
10/100/1000-MBps networks, featuring WOL, BMC support via IPMI V1.5 and
PXE remote boot support.
Hot-plug Hard Disk Subsystem
The server supports up to six 25.4-mm (1-inch) slim-high, 2.5-inch hot-plug hard
disk drives with frames that are connected to the SAS backplane. A 6-port
onboard SAS controller is provided to assure SCSI functionality for the HDDs.
With the hot-plug feature, you can add, remove, or replace hard disk drives
without turning off the server. No HDD is contained in the basic configuration.
ServeRAID-8i RoMB Controller
By default, the base unit has a ServeRAID-8i RoMB (RAID on Mother Board)
controller installed for up to six HDDs. RAID levels 0, 1, 10, 5, 50 are supported.
A 256 MB RAID Cache is also provided. The ServeRAID-8i controller works in
conjunction with the onboard SAS controller. A BBU is included to secure
memory contents in case of a power failure.
The ServeRAID-8i controller is optionally available in the extension unit.
However, in a multi-node configuration, a maximum of two ServeRAID-8i
controllers is allowed to handle up to 12 HDDs.
The ServeRAID-8i controller is installed as an adapter in a dedicated PCI-X slot.
Adapter hardware installation is described in the Options Guide.

Accessible IDE Drive
The system features one accessible 0,5-inch IDE drive. In the basic configu-
ration, the server is equipped with a CD/DVD-ROM drive connected via a fast
IDE controller.
The drive can not be replaced during operation.
Hot-plug PCI-X
The server is equipped with six PCI-X 2.0 slots, all offering 64-bit support,
operating at 266 MHz, and supporting hot-plug functionality.
Hot-plug Power Supply Units
The server is equipped with two hot-plug power supply units, ensuring power
supply redundancy. One power supply unit can be replaced while the remaining
power supply unit ensures further server operation. Redundancy only applies to
a frequency range from 200V - 240V. Error indication is performed via LEDs on
the PSU. The server automatically sets itself to a voltage in the range of
100 to 120 V and from 200 to 240 V.
Hot-plug Fans
The server is equipped with 8 hot-plug fans (2 fan blocks on the left and on the
right with 4 fans each). The cooling system is designed to meet thermal speci-
fications when any single fan in the system fails. Additionally, the loss of a fan in
the left airflow path and in the right airflow path is supported. When any one of
the fans fails, all other fans operate at full speed. Error indication done via LEDs.
ServerStart CD
You can configure the server quickly and purposefully with the ServerStart
software provided. User-guided menus are available for installing the server
operating systems.
System management capabilities
The server comes with an onboard BMC and a Remote Service Adapter
(RSA-II, also called RemoteView Management Board). This adapter, in
conjunction with the systems management software ServerView provided with
the server, enables you to manage the functions of the server both locally and
remotely.

The systems management capabilities also provide system monitoring, event
recording, and dial-out alert capability.
The RSA-II provides the following functions:
– Around-the-clock remote access and system management of your server
– Remote management independent of the status of the managed server
– Remote control of hardware and operating systems
– Web-based management with standard Web browsers
ServerView enables the management of all PRIMERGY servers in the network
via a central console. Here ServerView supports the following functions:
●Temperature monitoring of the CPU and the surrounding area.
●Timer-controlled switch-on (Timer)
●Remote switch-on (Ring Indicator)
●Watchdog timer for Automatic Server Reconfiguration and Restart (ASR&R)
in the event of failure of memory modules or processors.
●Pager message when rebooting system following an error
●Monitoring of PCI bus loading
●Watchdog timer for operating system monitoring and application monitoring
●Detailed status and error reports for bus systems, processors and main
memory
●Statistics for service technicians (operating hours counter, counter for
switch-on/switch-off cycles)
●Error message logging in non-volatile RAM (NVRAM)

Service and Support
The PRIMERGY RX800 S2 is service-friendly and modular (compute node
housing), thus enabling quick and simple maintenance.
Blue or green on a component indicates "touch points", where you can grip the
component to remove it from or install it in the server, open or close a latch, and
so on. Orange on a component or an orange label on or near a component
indicates that the component can be hot-plugged like power supplies, fans and
hot-plug PCI slots.

1.3 Notational Conventions
italic type Identifies commands, menu items, names of buttons,
options, variables, file names, path names and input
within the body of the text.
fixed-width type Used for messages and prompts on the screen.
[Key symbols] Keys are shown as they appear on the keyboard. If an
uppercase letter must be entered explicitly, the Shift
key is also specified (e.g.[SHIFT]).
A plus (+) sign between the key symbols indicates that
these keys are to be pressed simultaneously.
