To avoid possible electric shock or
personal injury, and to avoid damaging
the tester or the equipment being
tested:
• Do not use the ST400 in any way not
detailed in this manual or the tester's
safety features may be compromised.
• Never use the tester to detect the
presence of voltages higher than
250V (AC or DC).

• The ST400 cannot detect the
presence of voltages below 110V.
Use caution whenever detecting AC
voltages above 42VACRMS or DC
voltages above 60VDC. Both pose a
shock hazard.
• Before using the tester, inspect the
case. Do not use the ST400 if the
case is damaged. ook for cracks
or missing plastic. Pay particular
attention to the insulation around
the connectors.
• Do not operate the tester around
explosive gas, vapor, or dust.
• When using the probes, keep your
fingers behind the finger guards.
Never touch the metal ends of the
probes when making a
measurement.
OPERATING
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Insert the tip of the screwdriver into
the “hot” side of a 110VAC or
220VAC outlet, or touch the tip to a
point on a live circuit.

2. Ground the tester by touching your
thumb to the metal button at the end
of the screwdriver’s handle.
ᏘWarning Ꮨ
DO NOT TOUCH the exposed metal
portion of the screwdriver tip while it is
contact with the live side of an outlet or
a current-carrying conductor.
3. If voltage is detected, the neon bulb
inside the clear portion of the handle
will glow. If you are testing outdoors
or in a brightly lit area, shield the
handle with your hand to provide a
better view of the bulb.

Tester is warranted to the original
purchaser to be free from defects in
material and workmanship for a period
of one year. Subject to certain
restrictions, General will repair or
replace this instrument if, after
examination, the company determines
it to be defective in material or
workmanship. The warranty period
begins on the date of purchase. You are
encouraged to register your product
online. General will extend your
warranty an additional 60 days if you
register at
www.generaltools.com/ProductRegistry.
This warranty does not apply to damages
that General determines to be from an
attempted repair by non-authorized
personnel or misuse, alterations, normal
wear and tear, or accidental damage.
The defective unit must be returned to
General Tools & Instruments or to a
General-authorized service center, freight
prepaid and insured. 5

replacement remedies described herein
is a condition of the contract for
purchase of this product. In no event
shall General be liable for any
incidental, special, consequential or
punitive damages, or for any cost,
attorneys’ fees, expenses, or losses
