Operation
Electrical Shock Hazard:
Do not expose charger to rain,
snow or wet conditions.
Failure to observe this warning could
result in severe injury or death.
Graphic Overlay
1. On initial power-up, all 6 LEDs on the graphic
overlay should light for a few seconds, and an
audible tone will sound.
2. The yellow power ON LED will remain ON, indicat-
ing the charger is ready for use.
3. Insert the battery into the charger battery pocket
and push it down firmly. Do not “slam” the battery
pack into the charger. Batteries are heavy and
charger damage may result.
4. The status of the charge operation is communicated
by 5 LEDs as shown on the graphic overlay.
The operation of each LED is explained on following page.
The charger will charge a battery pack between 41°F
(5°C) and 131°F (55°C). During charging, the charger
and battery pack will generate enough heat to feel
warm. This is normal and does not indicate a problem.
Do not store the battery pack in direct sunlight or
anywhere the battery cannot cool down. If the battery
pack is hot after removal from crimper, allow it to cool at
room temperature before placing it in the charger.
Charge times may increase significantly if the battery is
warm or hot, since cool-down in the battery charger
pocket takes longer.
If the battery pack is hot from severe use and immediate
recharging is necessary, place the battery pack in a cool
air stream or in a cool location.

Battery Charger
Operation (cont’d)
YELLOW CHARGING (LED)
ON: battery charging
OFF: if charge complete, or fault detected, or during
reconditioning cycle
Charge time: approximately 1 hour
The 337 16.8 V Nickel Cadmium battery has a 5 LED
charge indicator. During CHARGING and RECONDI-
TIONING cycles, the battery’s charge indicator will light
up to indicate the approximate charge capacity of the
battery.
GREEN READY (LED)
ON: battery pack fully charged
OFF: at all other times when battery is not fully
charged
After reaching full charge, the charger automatically
applies a maintenance charge which will keep the
battery fully charged indefinitely. The CHARGE LED is
OFF during this maintenance charge.
RED BATTERY FAULT (LED)
ON: if the charger detects that the battery is shorted
or failed to reach a predetermined voltage upon
battery insertion or during the CHARGING cycle
OFF: during normal charging or reconditioning or
temperature fault
BLINKING: lack of communication with battery
RED TEMPERATURE (LED)
ON: if battery is too hot or cold (below 41°F [4°C]
or above 131°F [55°C])
OFF: during normal charging or reconditioning or when
battery fault
If the TEMPERATURE LED is indicated, the charger
remains in the maintenance mode. Once the battery
pack achieves temperatures between 41°F (5°C) and
131°F (55°C), the charge cycle will start and the
CHARGING LED will turn ON.
YELLOW RECONDITIONING (LED)
ON: during battery reconditioning
OFF: during normal charging or when fault detected
Recondition time: approximately 7 hours, depending on
the age and condition of the battery
The RECONDITIONING cycle removes the effect of
“memory” loss which the battery may acquire from
repeated partial battery discharge use in crimper.
Complete discharge of battery during crimper use is the
best way of preventing the effect of “memory” loss.
After 30 partial battery discharges, a tone will sound 5
times to alert the user to press the RECONDITIONING
button on the charger.
The user may recondition the battery at any time by
pressing the RECONDITIONING button within the first
minute of battery insertion. If one minute elapses, the
charger defaults to CHARGING.
The RECONDITIONING cycle consists of a charge
cycle a full discharge cycle, and a final charge cycle.
GREEN
POWER ON
(LED)
BLINKING: Low power standby mode
When the input voltage drops below 11.5 VDC, the
charger goes into low power standby mode. If the
voltage drop is less than 15 seconds, the charger will
resume operation.
This feature allows the charger to continue its cycle if it
is interrupted during engine startup. It will also shut off
the charger if the vehicle electrical system/battery
voltage drops too low.

Battery Charger
Troubleshooting
The following is intended as an aid in determining whether the battery or the charger may be malfunctioning.
PROBLEM:
POWER ON
LED is off.
CAUSE: Charger not plugged into outlet. Outlet is not live, or DC power not supplied to charger.
Damaged cord or plug.
SOLUTION: Plug charger into outlet. Check outlet and/or DC power source. Replace cord unit.
PROBLEM: Battery does not fit in charger battery pocket.
CAUSE: Different manufacturer’s battery, or object in the battery pocket.
RESOLUTION: Check if the battery is a Greenlee 337. If not, do not use. Remove object from battery pocket.
PROBLEM:
No battery in charger, but
CHARGING, BATTERY FAULT
, AND
TEMPERATURE
LEDs are ON.
CAUSE: Dirt or foreign objects are in the charger battery pocket.
SOLUTION: Unplug charger from outlet. Remove any dirt or foreign objects from charger battery pocket.
If the LEDs continue to remain ON, the charger may be defective. Return charger to an
Authorized Greenlee Service Center.
PROBLEM:
POWER ON
LED is ON, battery is inserted, but
CHARGE LED
is OFF and no other LEDs
are on.
CAUSE: Battery not making contact with terminals in charger battery pocket. Terminals misaligned.
SOLUTION: Realign terminals. Push battery in firmly. Do not “slam” the battery into the battery pocket.
PROBLEM:
BATTERY FAULT
LED is ON.
CAUSE: The battery has less than the minimum voltage necessary for proper charging.
This indicates one of the following:
• The battery is new and has not yet been charged.
• The battery has been used and has discharged in storage.
• The battery is exhausted and needs to be replaced.
• The battery is damaged and needs to be replaced.
SOLUTION: Place the battery into the charger to begin the low-current, or maintenance charge mode. A new
battery should be left in the charger for one hour; a battery that has been used should be left in
the charger for twelve hours. After the suggested maintenance charge, completely remove the
battery from the charger and place it back into the charger.
• If the Charge LED comes on, the battery is good. Leave the battery in the charger for the
normal one-hour charge.
• If the Battery Fault LED comes on again, the battery is exhausted or damaged and needs
to be replaced.
Please dispose of used batteries in accordance with federal, state, and local laws.
In North America, contact the nearest battery recycling center, call 1-800-8-BATTERY.

Battery Charger
Troubleshooting (cont’d)
PROBLEM:
BATTERY FAULT
LED is “Blinking.”
CAUSE: Lack of communication between charger and battery. Charger terminals are misaligned. Charger
and battery terminals dirty.
SOLUTION: Unplug charger. Inspect charger terminals for proper alignment. Realign terminals. Clean battery
and charger terminals with a pencil eraser. Replug charger into outlet. Retry charging battery. If
not, try a known good battery.
PROBLEM:
TEMPERATURE
LED comes ON when battery is first inserted in the charger.
CAUSE: The battery is too hot or too cold to charge.
SOLUTION: Remove battery from the charger and allow it to adjust to room temperature.
NOTE: If the battery is left in the charger, it will cool down or warm to a temperature upon which
the charger will begin the charge cycle. However, depending on the temperature of the
battery, it may take 2-3 hours to adjust. The cool-down or warming up of a battery pack
is much quicker if the battery is not in the charger pocket.
PROBLEM:
TEMPERATURE
LED comes on when battery is in the
CHARGING
cycle. The charge cycle
has been terminated.
CAUSE: The battery has become too hot or too cold to continue charging.
SOLUTION: If this is the first time the battery has initiated a temperature fault, remove the battery and
allow it to achieve room temperature. Then try to charge the battery a second time. If the
TEMPERATURE
LED comes on again, the battery is defective, or the ambient temperature is
not within 41°F to 131°F (5°C to 55°C).
PROBLEM:
TEMPERATURE
LED is always ON, but the battery indicates a full charge. The charger
CHARGING
and
READY
LEDs are functioning normally.
CAUSE: The battery got too hot or too cold near the end of charge.
SOLUTION: Make sure that the battery temperature and the ambient temperature are both within 41°F to
131°F (5°C to 55°C).
PROBLEM:
TEMPERATURE
LED is OFF, but you sense the battery is abnormally warm or severely
overheated.
CAUSE: The charger or the battery may be defective.
SOLUTION: Try a known good second battery. If the known good battery also overheats, return the charger
to an authorized Greenlee Service Center.

Greenlee Textron / Subsidiary of Textron Inc. 12 4455 Boeing Dr., Rockford, IL 61109-2988 815/397-7070
Battery Charger
Troubleshooting (cont’d)
PROBLEM:
TEMPERATURE
LED is ON and one or more LEDs are also ON (in addition to the
POWER
LED), or the tone sounds continuously.
CAUSE: The charger logic is out of sequence.
SOLUTION: Unplug the charger. Wait for a few seconds and then plug the charger back in. If the problem
persists, move the charger away from sources of strong radio frequency noise, such as portable
communication devices. If the problem still exists, return the charger to an Authorized Greenlee
Service Center.
PROBLEM: When you first put a fully charged battery in the charger, the
CHARGING
LED comes on,
indicating the battery needs charging.
CAUSE: There is nothing wrong with the battery or charger. During the first 5 minutes, the charger
checks the battery for correct voltage and charge state. During this time the
CHARGING
LED
is ON. After the checking is complete, the
READY
LED comes ON.
SOLUTION:
Do not “top off” a fully charged battery by repeatedly placing it in charger. The battery
may overheat and may be damaged!
PROBLEM: The LEDs on the battery are ON, but the charger
READY
LED is OFF.
CAUSE: The battery displays charge capacity in increments. For example, when the battery reaches 90%
charge, all of the battery LEDS will be ON. The charger READY LED will come ON when the
battery has reached 100% charge.
SOLUTION: Wait for the charger to finish the charge cycle. If the condition does not correct itself, try another
battery. If the condition is corrected, the first battery may be defective. If the condition persists,
the charger is not operating correctly. Return charger to an Authorized Greenlee Service Center.
PROBLEM: The
READY
LED on the charger is ON, but not all of the battery LEDs are ON.
CAUSE: Possible problem with the charger, or the battery.
SOLUTION: Try recharging a second battery. If the second battery and charger both indicate full capacity at
the end of the charge cycle, then perform the
RECONDITIONING
operation on the first battery.
If, with the second battery, the charger
READY
LED also comes ON before the battery LEDs are
ON, then the charger is defective. Return the charger to an Authorized Greenlee Service Center.
PROBLEM: The charger won’t go into the
RECONDITIONING
cycle. The
CHARGING
LED stays ON.
CAUSE: It has been more than one minute since you inserted the battery.
SOLUTION: Remove the battery and reinsert it into the charger. Manually push the
RECONDITIONING
button within one minute of battery insertion.
PROBLEM: You reconditioned the battery, but you do not perceive an increase in battery capacity.
CAUSE: Diminished battery capacity due to age and use.
Power to the charger may have been interrupted during the
RECONDITIONING
cycle. If a loss
of power occurs, the charger defaults to the normal charge mode. The battery would simply be
recharged at its current state without the benefit of reconditioning.
SOLUTION: If power is lost, remove battery, reinsert, and repeat the
RECONDITIONING
cycle.

The life and capacity of a nickel cadmium (NiCd) battery
can vary significantly depending on the discharge
current, charging method and the environment in which
it is used. As with all batteries, expect to see a reduction
in the total number of tool operations a fully charged
battery can deliver over its life. Charging times and
reconditioning times may also increase.
New batteries should be reconditioned before first use
to optimize their performance. Batteries should also be
fully discharged between charging cycles.
When possible, allow the battery to “rest” for 30 - 45
minutes after charging and before using the battery in a
tool. This allows the battery to cool internally and helps
maintain battery life.
IMPORTANT SAFETY
INSTRUCTIONS
Operation
• Do not immerse batteries in water or any liquid.
If batteries are immersed, contact your service
center for proper handling.
• Never short between the battery terminals.
• Use only an approved Greenlee charger rated for

vapors and may explode.
Failure to observe this warning may result in injury
from inhalation of vapors or burns from flying debris.
Battery Charge Indicator
The charge indicator LED’s on the battery display power
available from the battery pack. Check the charge by
pressing the button beneath the LED display.
Note: All batteries have reduced capacity at cold
temperatures. The charge indicator is
automatically temperature compensated.
Maintenance
Use a soft cloth to wipe any dirt, moisture or grease
from the battery. Do not use any liquid to clean the
battery.
A battery will automatically retain a full charge if left in
an operating Greenlee charger.
Storage
Batteries should be kept in a cool, dry place whenever
possible. Do not store batteries in direct sunlight, on a
metal surface, or anywhere the batteries cannot cool down.
When batteries are to be unused for weeks or more,
they should be discharged before storage. A battery
can be safely discharged by placing it in a crimper
and cycling it until the battery is exhausted.
Do not leave the battery in a non-operating charger.
The battery may discharge back through the charger
rather than hold a charge.
