Description
The Greenlee 805 Cable Puller is designed for light-duty
pulling of fiber optic cable, coaxial cable, CATV cable,
computer cable, and small power cable.
The 805 Cable Puller has variable speed control,
continuous force monitoring, and an automatic shut-off
limit. The operator may set the speed of the pull from
10 feet per minute to 75 feet per minute, and may set
the automatic shut-off limit from 200 lb of pulling force to
800 lb of pulling force.
Safety
Safety is essential in the use and maintenance of
Greenlee tools and equipment. This manual and any
markings on the tool provide information for avoiding
hazards and unsafe practices related to the use of this
tool. Observe all of the safety information provided.
Purpose of this Manual
This manual is intended to familiarize all personnel with
the safe operation and maintenance procedures for the
following Greenlee tool:

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

• Inspect tool cords periodically and if damaged,
have replaced by authorized service facility.

grease.
Inspect all pulling system components before
installation. Never use a worn, defective or
incomplete component.
• Always operate in well-lit areas.
• Wear proper apparel. Do not wear loose clothing,
gloves, neckties, rings, bracelets, or other jewelry
that might get caught in moving parts. Nonslip
footwear is recommended. Wear protective hair
covering to contain long hair.

Service should be performed by
authorized personnel only.
Cable Pulling Safety
The cable puller operator must be familiar with the cable-
pulling process and must be qualified to use this cable
puller. If the operator is not qualified to use this cable
puller, he must work under the direct supervision of
someone who is fully qualified.
This manual serves as a guide to using the 805 cable
puller. Due to the unique nature of each cable pull, no
single manual can provide one set of instructions for
every pulling situation. The information in this guide
should be combined with the operator’s cable-pulling
experience. In every case, safety is the most important
consideration.
Do not use larger sizes of ropes or polypropylene
rope. Greenlee 3/8" Multiplex rope has a pulling
load of 800 lb and an average breaking strength
of 3420 lb.
Do not use chains other than the supplied Greenlee
vise chains.
Failure to observe this warning could result in
severe injury or death.
The structure to which the puller is mounted must
be capable of withstanding the total pulling load.

The 805 Cable Puller must be calibrated once a year. The 805 Cable Puller will be calibrated once a year at no
charge for five years from date of purchase. After five years, the customer pays for the calibration. The customer
pays freight in both directions for every calibration.

1. Pulling Speed Meter:
Displays the capstan speed in feet per minute.
2. Shutoff Limit Reset Button:
Restarts the motor after automatic limit shut-off.
Automatic shut-off occurs if the pulling tension
exceeds the limit set by the operator.
3. Pulling Force Meter:
Displays the pulling force at the capstan in pounds.
4. Set Limit Button:
Depress to display the automatic shut-off limit in
pounds of force.
5. Force Limit Set Knob:
Sets the automatic shut-off limit.
Controls and Displays
6. Power-OFF Button:
Shuts off all AC power to the controller and puller.
7. Power-ON Button:
Turns on all AC power to the controller and puller.
Also serves as a 10-amp circuit breaker.
8. Speed Sensor Connector:
Connects the speed sensor, located on the motor, to
the controller.
9. Pulling Speed Set Knob:
Sets the pulling speed in feet per minute.
Note: The puller will maintain the desired speed unless
the force on the pull line is greater than the puller can
sustain. The puller will then run at a lower speed. The
puller may slow down even more during the course of
the pull as more pulling force is required.

10. AC Power Cord:
Connect to a 120 VAC, 15-amp GFCI power supply
only.
11. Puller Motor Power Receptacle:
Receptacle for Puller Motor Power Cord (item 16)
12. Foot Switch Receptacle:
Serves as the input for the foot switch. With the foot
switch connected, the foot switch controls the motor.
Note: Do not plug anything other than the foot
switch into this receptacle!
13. Foot Switch Release Lever:
This lever must be depressed to release the foot
switch connector.
Connections
14. Chart Recorder Force Output Receptacle:
This receptacle is used to connect a strip chart
recorder (Greenlee model number 33901), to
monitor force. Voltage output is proportionate to the
force on the pull line and is rated in pounds.
15. Chart Recorder Speed Output Receptacle:
This receptacle is used to connect a strip chart
recorder (Greenlee model number 33901), to
monitor speed. Voltage output is proportionate to the
capstan speed and is rated in feet per minute.

Plug into Puller Motor Power Receptacle (item 11).

Operation
Wear eye protection while blowing
fish line through conduit.
1. Vacuum or blow a fish line through the conduit. Tie
the Greenlee 3/8" Multiplex rope to the fish line, and
manually pull the 3/8" Multiplex rope through the
conduit. For specific instructions and tools, refer to
a Greenlee catalog or call Greenlee Customer
Service at 1-800-735-0786.
2. Connect the cable to be pulled to an appropriate grip
with a working load rated for maximum expected pull
forces.
3. Connect the grip to a swivel, breakaway swivel, or
rope clevis.
4. Attach the swivel, breakaway swivel, or clevis to the
3/8" Greenlee Multiplex rope.
Use Greenlee 3/8" Multiplex rope, with 800 lb
pulling load rating. Do not use rope of more than
3/8" diameter. Do not use Polypro rope. Inspect all pulling system components before
installation. Never use a worn, defective or incom-
plete component.

Puller Setup
1. Prepare the leaf chain unit by rotating the screw
handle counterclockwise to expose threads as
shown.
2. Set the bracket against the conduit.

PIN
Be sure chain is tight. Use only on round conduit
(2" to 6" rigid) capable of retaining 800 lb.
3. Slip the chain through the hole at the end of the
bracket. Wrap the chain around the conduit and slip
the free end of the chain into the bracket so the
bracket is snug against the conduit.
4. Rotate the screw handle clockwise to tighten the
chain. Make sure the chains are tight and that the
nut hasn’t been tightened against the bottom of the
screw threads.
Mounting Puller to Bracket
1. Remove the puller mounting pin from the bracket.
2. Lift the puller and slide it into place.
3. Slide the mounting pin through holes in the puller
and bracket.

Greenlee feeding sheaves are not compatible with
all types of cable. They may allow cable to bend
much sharper than specified by the cable manufac-
turer. An alternate setup may be required. Consult
the cable manufacturer for guidance on cable
bending radius.
1. Select size of feeding sheave to match conduit size.
Attach boom to feeding sheave.
2. Insert unit into conduit.
Optional Pulling Boom
When the chain-leaf mounting is not practical or is not
possible, use the optional Pulling Boom (Greenlee part
number 33656) and a Greenlee feeding sheave. The
feeding sheaves are available for conduit sizes from
2" through 5".
Note: The leaf chain mounting bracket must be
removed from the puller when using the boom mount.
3. Add extension of 2" rigid conduit. Extension must be
long enough to rest on floor to support the weight of
the puller.
Do not pinch electric cord(s) between puller or
puller bracket and the boom. Damage to the cord
may occur, resulting in electric shock, personal
injury or death.

Do not plug anything other than the foot switch
connector into this receptacle.
5. Insert mounting pin through holes and secure pin in
place with clip.
4. Attach puller to boom by slipping the slots of the
puller over the projections on the boom.
Optional Foot Switch
To connect the optional foot switch connector to the foot
switch receptacle, press the connector release lever and
insert the connector.
Note: The foot switch connector locks in place when
connected.
Optional Chart Recorder
To connect the optional chart recorder, plug the male
end of the recorder cable (part no. 918 6332.5) into
either the force output receptacle or speed output
receptacle.
Connect the red wire to the positive (+) terminal and the
black wire to the negative (-) terminal on the recorder.
Set the recorder on a clean, stable, dry surface.
Do not plug any device other than a recorder or
voltmeter into these receptacles.
Doing so may damage the controller or the device
and will void the warranty.

2. Adjusting Speed
Push the ON button to start puller. Turn PULLING
SPEED knob to desired pulling speed.
• Rope at the capstan can crush a

3. Adjusting Automatic Shutdown Limit
Press the LIMIT SET button while turning the
PULLING FORCE knob until the display indicates
the maximum pulling force desired.
4. Press the Power-OFF button.
5. Wrap the capstans with Greenlee 3/8" Multiplex rope
as shown.
Number of Rope Wraps on Capstan
It is best to start the pull with just a few wraps of rope
on the capstan and add wraps later as the tailing force
requires. Pull on the tailing rope only hard enough to
keep the rope from slipping on the capstan. Using more
wraps or pulling harder than necessary will cause the
rope to grab the capstan tighter, making it difficult for the
rope to slide outward. This will consume power and result
in a slower pull.
The operator should be able to stop the pull immediately
by relaxing the tailing force and allowing the rope to slip
back on the capstan. Slipping the rope on the capstan for
long periods of time will damage the rope and reduce its
strength. Turn the puller off and tie off the rope. The
“correct” number of wraps is a fine balance between a
comfortable tailing force and being able to stop the pull
by relaxing the tail force.
Connecting to Power and Setting Limits
1. Plug the cord into an appropriate power supply.
(To determine whether power supply is adequate,
see Description section of this guide.)

The Tailing Rope
The rope that is pulled off of the capstan is known as the
tailing rope.
When the tailing rope is relaxed, rope stretch will cause
the rope to slip in the opposite direction. This will cause
the tailing rope to be pulled toward the capstan. (In pulls
where a large part of the run is vertical, all of the tailing
rope could be pulled back.)
1. Grasp the tailing end of the rope. Pull gently on the
rope so that the rope is snug against the capstan.
2. Press the Power-ON button.
Note: If using the optional foot switch, depress switch.
Coil rope away from immediate work area as the pull
progresses.
4. After the pull is complete, press Power-OFF.
5. After capstans have stopped turning, the operator
must continue to maintain control of the rope. Relax
the tension by gradually easing up on the tailing
rope until the rope goes slack.

Never remove wraps of rope from the capstans
when there is a load on the pulling rope.
Disassembly
1. Unplug the cords from power supplies.
Note: If optional foot switch was used, disconnect by
depressing foot switch connector lever and gently
removing foot switch connector.
Restarting After Overload Shutdown
The puller may shut down during the pull. This will
happen if:
(1) the amount of pulling tension exceeds the
automatic shut-off limit established by the
operator, or
(2) the amount of pulling tension exceeds the
maximum capability of the puller.
If the puller shuts down, apply and maintain enough pull
force on the tailing rope to keep control of the tailing rope.
Allow the rope to slip slowly back over the capstans.
Take extreme care to maintain control over the rope.
Secure the tailing rope to the puller by wrapping the
tailing rope around the hook to the left of the capstans.
Puller shutdown indicates a pulling problem. The conduit
may be partially obstructed, the puller shutdown limit
may be set too low, the cable may be kinked at the
feeding end of the pull, or there may be some other
cause.
Due to the unique nature of each cable pull, it is impos-
sible to list every cause for puller shutdown. It is the
responsibility of the operator or supervisor to determine
the cause of the problem. Once the problem has been
eliminated, the operator may resume the pull.
Push the RESET button to continue the pull.
Turn power OFF and disconnect from power
source before unplugging the foot switch connec-
tor. Failure to do so may cause the puller to start
unexpectedly.
Failure to observe this warning could result in
severe injury or death.
2. Disconnect all other optional accessories.
3. Disconnect 3/8" Greenlee Multiplex rope from cable.
4. Unwrap rope from capstans.
5. Disassemble chain leaf mounting bracket or mount-
ing boom by reversing the assembly instructions
used earlier in this manual.

Optional Foot Switch (Part No. 503 3629.0):
Allows the operator to stop or start the capstan rotation
by foot operation.
Optional Recorder (Part No. 50339010):
including cable 91863325
Allows the operator to make a permanent record of the
pull. The recorder has a single input and can record
either the speed or the force of the pull.
Optional Recorder Cable (Part No. 91863325):
Used for connecting the chart recorder to the
805. Included with purchase of chart recorder
(p/n 50339010)
Pulling Accessories
Optional Pulling Boom (Part No. 50336568):
This accessory provides a convenient means of mount-
ing the 805 to a pull box when leaf chain mounting is not
practical. The U-type end of the boom mounts directly to
any Greenlee feeding sheave. The feeding sheave can
then be inserted into the conduit. The sheave will provide
a smooth surface for the rope to bear on as it exits the
conduit.
The opposite end of the boom features a projection and
pin which are which are used to secure the puller.
Note: The leaf chain mounting bracket must be removed
when using the boom mount.
Note: In some cases, cable should not be pulled
directly over the feeding sheave. Consult the cable
manufacturer’s specifications for the minimum cable
bending radius.
Greenlee 441 feeding sheaves have a radius of 1.5
inches.

Maintenance
Dual capstan drive chain service
Every 20 hours apply SAE 20 engine oil or SAE 80W gear
oil to the inside of the chain, at the edges of the link plate,
with a small brush. Using a clean rag, wipe off excess.
To gain access to the chain, remove the four screws
securing the chain guard and the three screws securing
the end plate and handle.
Insert two 5/16–18 UNC bolts in end plate as shown,
tighten to loosen end plate.
Remove the three screws securing the sprocket to the
capstan. Attach steering wheel puller to drive sprocket.
Pull drive sprocket thrust washer and bearing along with
other sprocket and chain. Lift off chain guard.
Disconnect electrical power before
servicing.

Bearing Lubrication
All bearings on this puller are permanently sealed and
need not be greased. Both capstans rotate on needle
bearings which should be greased every two years, or
more frequently if heavily used.
To gain access to the bearings, follow the chain removal
procedure outlined above and, in addition, pull off the
chain guard and both capstans. Lubricate the three
needle bearings with a high quality bearing grease.
Replace grease seals if necessary.
Gearbox Lubrication
The motor gearbox is sealed and should never need
routine maintenance. If the gearbox must be opened for
service, replace any lost lubricant with Texaco Multifax™
EP2 grease.
Electronic Control Unit
Keep electrical components dry.
The control unit should be kept dry and clean, especially
the bottom which serves as a heatsink. Protect control
unit from physical abuse. There are no user serviceable
parts inside controller.

Positioning Speed Sensor
1. Disconnect speed sensor from bottom of controller.
The four hold down bolts on the bottom of the
controller must be loosened to provide clearance for
the sensor connector.
2. Loosen sensor jam nut.
3. Screw the sensor down until it is close to the fan
blade but not touching.
4. Using a small tool (screwdriver, etc.) turn the fan
blade until one blade is directly under the center
pole of the sensor.
5. Turn the sensor until the center pole just touches
the fan blade then turn it back a quarter of a turn.
6. Tighten the jam nut on the sensor.
7. Reconnect the sensor onto the bottom of the
controller.
8. Set the controller to minimum speed.
9. Plug unit into power source. Turn unit on. Motor
should run at minimum speed and meter should
read about 10 feet/minute. Listen for sound of fan
blade(s) hitting sensor. If one or more blades are
hitting, back the sensor out another quarter turn.
Tighten down the four controller bolts.

805 Electric Cable Puller

Other than what is described in this manual, the 805
puller must be returned to Greenlee Textron for service
or calibration.
Contact the Field Service Department at Greenlee
Textron (1-800-435-0786) to make arrangements to
return the unit for calibration. Greenlee Textron will pay
for calibration annually for the first five years from date
of purchase. The customer pays the freight.

The optional recorder must be returned to:
