Griots Garage BATTERY MANAGER III User manual

GRIOT'S GARAGE BATTERY MANAGER III
Thank you for choosing this fine product from GRIOT'S GARAGE. The BATTERY MANAGER III is
designed to maintain charge on 12 volt batteries lead acid, WET, MF, AGM as well as most other
GEL batteries.. The housing is made from a waterproof material, making ideal for outdoor use.
The cord management system allows the BATTERY MANAGER III to be stored away with minimal
space. The magnetic base allows the BATTERY MANAGER III to be attached to any steel surface. A
built-in electrical detector prevents sparks during DC clips connecting. Enjoy the best!
USEFUL INFORMATION
Before connection the BATTERY MANAGER III you should turn off any lights, or other 12 volt
accessories that are connected to your vehicle's electrical system. Identify the polarity of the bat-
tery, the POSITIVE (POS, P, +) terminal and the NEGATIVE (NEG, N, –) terminal. Check which
battery terminal is grounded (connected to chassis). The negative terminal is usually the ground-
ed post.
For a negative-grounded vehicle, connect the POSITIVE (RED) clip of the battery charger to the
POSITIVE (POS, P, +) ungrounded post of battery and then connect the NEGATIVE (BLACK) clip
to a heavy-gauge metal part of the frame or to the engine block away from the battery. Do not
connect the clip to the carburetor, fuel lines, or sheet-metal body parts. Stay clear of fan blades,
belts, pulleys, and other parts that can cause injury to persons.
For a positive-grounded vehicle, connect the NEGATIVE (BLACK) clip of the battery charger to
the NEGATIVE (NEG, N, –) ungrounded post of battery and then connect the POSITIVE (RED)
clip to a heavy-gauge metal part of the frame or to the engine block. Do not connect clip to car-
buretor, fuel lines, or sheet-metal body parts. Do not connect the clip to the carburetor, fuel lines,
or sheet-metal body parts. Stay clear of fan blades, belts, pulleys, and other parts that can cause
injury to persons.
Plug the BATTERY MANAGER III AC power cord into a standard AC wall outlet. All the LEDs will
scroll in sequence. Use mode switch to set suitable maximum charging current (car mode or
motorcycle mode). Use the COLD mode switch to help compensate for cold weather condi-
tions. This will provide extra charging voltage. The Charging LED will now blink which means
charging is in process. The BATTERY MANAGER III can detect battery voltage and recharge battery
frequently and automatically. When the vehicle's battery is fully charged the charging LED will
remain on.
INTERNAL CHARGING STEPS
The BATTERY MANAGER III runs through six different maintenance steps during the charging cycle
to test and monitor the condition of the battery. This helps to provide the correct charge rate for
the specific battery type for optimal performance.
1.) The Desulphation step provides a pulse charging to help break down
lead sulphate crystals that form on the battery cells to extend the battery life cycle.
2.) The Soft Start step provides a small amount of electrical current for checking
the battery condition and construction configuration.
3.) Bulk mode is the main charging step that provides most of the energy.
The BATTERY MANAGER III provides the maximum power output to speed up charging.
4.) Absorption mode is when terminal voltage is maintained at the original charge level.
During this phase the electrical current drops little by little as the battery reaches its full
charge potential. The battery usually reaches its 100% charge rate during this step.
5.) Analysis phase is when the BATTERY MANAGER III tests the charge potential of the battery.
6.) Float mode is when the BATTERY MANAGER III maintains the fully charged battery.

TROUBLE SHOOTING
This section will help you identify the source of most problems that can occur with the BATTERY
MANAGER III. If you have a problem with the charger, please review this section before contact-
ing GRIOT'S GARAGE.
Situation Possible cause and solution
There is no scrolling of LED's when
BATTERY MANAGER III is connected
to AC power.
No AC power at wall outlet or AC voltage is too low.
Ensure power is present at outlet.
Charging LED off
CAR or Motorcycle LED is ON
DC Output short, Polarity reverse, or DC clips not con-
nected properly, or non-12V battery is being charged.
Check the battery rated voltage and polarity, remove the
clips and correct, then try again
Select the COLD or MODE switch
and the BATTERY MANAGER III
doesn't respond
Click and release of switch too quickly.
Press and hold the switch button for a minimum of 0.2
seconds and release it.
Fault LED blinking Battery has a very low level of voltage or is bad.
Please recharge again and if the situation reoccurs it
means the battery is bad. Please replace with a new bat-
tery.
CAUTION:
This BATTERY MANAGER III is designed to maintain charge on 12 volt, lead acid batteries, WET,
MF, AGM as well as most GEL batteries. Do not use it to charge other kinds of batteries or for any
other purpose. In order to reduce risk of damage to electrical plug and cord, pull from plug rath-
er than cord when disconnecting the BATTERY MANAGER III. Examine the BATTERY MANAGER III
regularly for damage, especially the cord, plug and enclosure. If the BATTERY MANAGER III is dam-
aged, it must not be used until it has been repaired or replaced. Do not disassemble the BATTERY
MANAGER III. Batteries may emit explosive gases during normal battery operation. Therefore it is
very important that you read this guide and follow instructions as well as recommended rates of
charge published by battery manufacturer exactly before using a battery charger.
Never smoke or allow a spark or flame in the vicinity of battery. Never charge a frozen battery.
Never charge a damaged battery. Never place the BATTERY MANAGER III above a battery being
charged; gases emitted from battery may corrode and damage the charger
Always wear complete eye protection and clothing protection. Avoid touching eyes while work-
ing near a battery. If battery acid contacts skin or clothing, wash immediately with soap and
plenty of water and seek medical attention immediately. If acid enters eye, immediately flood eye
with running water for at least 10 minutes and get medical attention immediately.
Make sure of good ventilation when battery is being charged. Never operate the BATTERY
MANAGER III in an enclosed area or when covered. Even though the BATTERY MANAGER III pre-
vents sparks during connection, we still recommend you to connect and disconnect the DC
cable after removing the AC cord from the wall outlet to reduce the risk of spark. Failure to
follow these safety guidelines may cause personal injury and/or damage to the BATTERY
MANAGER III. It may also void your product warranty.
