OPERATION
• Remove the protective cap and turn
ORP on with by sliding the ON/OFF
switch on the top of the meter.
• Immerse it into the solution to
be tested, without exceeding the
maximum immersion level.
• Stir gently and wait for stable reading.
• After use, rinse the electrode with tap water and
replace the protective cap.
MAINTENANCE
• Check the meter by im-
mersing it in HI7021 test
solution. The reading should
be between 240±20 mV at
25 ºC (77 ºF).
Otherwise clean the electrode
platinum tip by rubbing it
with a lint-free cloth soaked
with HI7061 cleaning solu-
tion.
• For more accurate readings, condition the meter
by immersing it in a pretreatment reducing
(HI7091) or oxidizing (HI7092) solution for
about 30 minutes before taking measurements.
• In case of erroneous readings even after an
accurate conditioning and calibra-
tion, the reference junction might
be contaminated or clogged.
• Pull out 2 mm (1/8’’)
of the cloth junction
to renew the electrode
reference (it is recom-
mended to cut the cloth
leaving always at least
2 mm -1/8’’ over the
reference compartment).
Repeat the maintenance and conditioning
procedure.
The cloth junction can be pulled out approxi-
mately 20 times. After that, the electrode should
be replaced.
ELECTRODE REPLACEMENT
For replacing the electrode, contact your local
Hanna Instruments Office.
BEPS & BATTERY REPLACEMENT
The meter is provided with BEPS (Battery Error
Prevention System) which avoid any erroneous
reading due to low battery level, by automatically
switching the meter off.
To replace the batteries, slide off the battery
compartment cover and replace all four 1.5V
alkaline batteries, while paying attention to the
correct polarity.
Batteries should only be replaced in a non-
hazardous area and using the battery type specified
in this instruction manual.
Preliminary Examination
Remove the tester and accessories from the packing material and
examine it carefully. If you require any further information, please contact
Hanna Instruments technical support team at [email protected].

General Description & Intended Use
HI98120 is a compact ORP and temperature tester. It features a
two-buttons operation system and is easy to use. The compact and
waterproof casing is designed to float if accidentally dropped in the
water. The tester is factory calibrated and measures temperature in
both °C and °F. It displays a stability tag that will disappear once the
reading has stabilized.
Battery level and low-battery indicator are clearly displayed on
the LCD to alert the user in the event that low battery power could
adversely affect the readings.
BEPS (Battery Error Prevention System)
The tester will automatically shut off if there is not enough power to
get an accurate reading.
ORP Probe
HI98120 is supplied together with HI73120 ORP replaceable
electrode.
Temperature Sensor
The stainless steel temperature sensor facilitates faster and more
accurate temperature measurement.

Use SET/HOLD to change the temperature unit, and press /MODE to
return to measurement mode.
Measurement
Place the electrode in the solution to be tested while stirring it gently.
The measurement should be taken after the stability tag ( ) has
disappeared.
The ORP (mV) value is displayed on the first LCD line and the
temperature on the second LCD line.
Note: If measurements are taken successively, rinse the probe
thoroughly in distilled or deionized water to eliminate cross-
contamination. After cleaning, rinse the probe with some of the
sample to be measured.
Maintenance
Please read the information below to ensure the highest possible
accuracy.
•If measurements are taken successively, rinse the probe
thoroughly in distilled or deionized water to eliminate cross-
contamination.
•Clean the electrode monthly using by keeping the electrode in
HI7061 General purpose cleaning solution for 30 minutes and
rinsing the probe thoroughly with water.
•When not in use, add a few drops of HI70300 Storage solution to
the protective cap. Never store the probe in distilled or deionized
water.
Electrode Replacement
Use supplied removal tool (HI73128) to replace the ORP electrode.
Insert the tool into the probe cavity.
Rotate the tool counterclockwise.
Pull the electrode out by using the other side of the tool.
Insert a new ORP electrode following the above instructions in reverse
order.
Battery Replacement
Battery life percentage indicator is displayed at power on. If the
battery level drops below 5%, the symbol lights up indicating
that the batteries should be replaced soon.
If the battery level is not adequate to guarantee an accurate reading,
the tester automatically turns off.
To replace the batteries, follow the next steps:
1. Turn OFF the tester.
2. Remove the four screws on the top of the tester to open the battery
compartment (figure 1).
