covers the Force Boom and it’s associated components supplied with your sprayer.
This manual forms part of the complete reference documentation supplied with your sprayer and contains
essential information for the safe and efficient operation of this equipment. Please read all the booklets carefully
before operating the sprayer, paying close attention to the safety sections in each publication.

Beware of overhead power lines
Warning: Operating agricultural machinery near powerlines presents a potentially fatal hazard. It is the
responsibility of the operator to ensure that minimum safe clearances are strictly observed, in particular
when transporting the implement, spraying, raising, tilting or lowering the boom. Also be aware that
during hot or windy weather sagging or swaying of powerlines can reduce safe working clearances.
Typical powerline structures for South Australia (guide only and subject to change without notice)
Powerline structures and voltages can vary in different regions of Australia. Consult your local electricity supply
authority for details of minimum safe clearances in your area.
A: Minimum safe clearance from conductor for vehicles and implements.
B: Minimum safe clearance from conductor for persons and livestock.
Spray drift
Caution: Serious crop damage can occur as a result of spray drift. Certain climatic conditions can
increase the risk of spray drift onto neighbouring crops.
Although calibration information is provided in the Spraying Techniques Manual it is vitally important that you read
the chemical manufacturer’s recommendations for the correct use of their product. The manufacturers label will
also state the products limitations and warnings.
Wind speed, temperature, humidity and chemical properties should all be considered when determining if
conditions are suitable for spraying. Contact your local Department of Primary Industries for details of relevant
publications explaining the risks and how best to minimise them. It is the responsibility of the sprayer operator to
ensure that the spraying conditions are suitable for the application of the chemical to be used.
Caution: After changing chemicals or crops it is essential that the entire sprayer be flushed.This includes
disconnecting hoses from the filters and pressure relief valve and cleaning residue and sediment in the
hoses, valves and filters. Failure to do so may potentially lead to serious crop damage.

Safety alert icons
This manual contains safety information which could prevent crop damage or save a life. Safety information is
included in each section and is highlighted by the following icons according to the level of potential risk.
Warning: This indicates the highest level of hazard alert. Failure to comply with the information
contained here could result in personal injury or death.
Caution: This indicates that mandatory action is required . Failure to comply with the information
contained here could result in damage to crops, the equipment and / or the environment.
Note: This indicates practical information regarding safe and effective use of the equipment and it’s
systems.
Chemical safety
Always read chemical labels and follow the instructions. (See chemical safety section for further details)
Always wash and rinse equipment and tools before servicing and after use (see section on de-contamination).
Avoid unnecessary contamination risk. Pressure test the equipment with clean water prior to filling with chemicals.
Never eat, drink or smoke while spraying or working with contaminated equipment.
Always change clothes after spraying and carefully launder to prevent cross-contamination.
Never drink water from any of the tanks or assume that the contents of the ‘clean water’ tanks are safe.
In case of poisoning identify chemicals used and seek medical advice immediately.
Mechanical safety
Never service or repair the equipment while it’s operating.
De-pressurize equipment after use and before servicing.
Disconnect power and ensure that all hydraulics are in the recommended position before servicing.
Always replace all safety devices and shields immediately after servicing.
When using an arc welder disconnect any power leads to the sprayer prior to welding and remove any flammable
or explosive material from the area.
General safety
Keep unauthorised persons and children away from the equipment at all times. Never attempt to enter a tank or
allow some one else to for any reason.
About this manual
This manual covers the operation, maintenance and spare parts information required for the safe and effective use
of the HARDI FTZ Force Boom in 28, 30, 32 and 36 metre widths.
It is designed to accompany the operation and maintenance documentation supplied with your sprayer and covers
the safety, systems, controls, and components specific to the boom only.
Warning: Operators must read all related material before use. Local law may require operators to be
certified before using spray equipment and some chemicals. Consult local authorities.
Warning: Although every effort has been made to include as much safety information as practical, it is
impossible to anticipate every scenario that may present a risk. It is therefore the responsibility of the
operator to exercise safe operating practices.
Note: Specific safety warnings appear at the beginning of each chapter where applicable. Read

Chemical safety
Chemical contamination poses a serious health risk. It is the
responsibility of the operator to ensure correct safety protection
equipment and clothing is used.
Safety equipment
Depending on which type of chemical is used, some or all of the
following protective clothing and equipment will be required (see
diagram this page):
1: Headgear, 2: Safety goggles or face shield, 3: Respirator,
4: Chemical resistant coveralls, 5: Chemical resistant gloves,
6: Chemical resistant boots.
Contaminated clothing
Contaminated clothing should be removed and safely stored and
laundered taking care not to contaminate the inside of the tractor
cab.
Australian Safety Standards
Protective clothing and equipment must conform to Australian
Safety Standards and must always be used when handling
chemicals, operating the sprayer and during the cleaning and
decontamination process.
Chemical Information
Chemical labels are registered by the National Registration
Authority. Laws vary from state to state regarding the purpose for
which a chemical may be used so consult your local authorities.
Always read the chemical manufacturer’s labels as they contain
critical information about your safety and the environment.
Be a responsible operator
Always consider the environment when disposing of chemical
residue (see section on decontamination).
Warning: Agricultural chemicals can be dangerous. Always read chemical labels and carefully follow
safety recommendations

General description
The FTZ Force boom is available in 28, 30, 32, and 36 metre working widths but may also be operated partially
folded if required producing a working width of approximately half it’s total length. Other features include 3
dimensional cross section steel construction, remote hydraulic movement control and coil spring suspension, and
a sturdy welded steel boom centre assembly. The boom is equipped with individual wing tilt control, which along
with the raising, lowering, folding and unfolding functions is operated via the tractor’s auxiliary hydraulic system.
Outer sections incorporate spring loaded breakaways for impact protection.
Terminology
Terminology used within this manual to describe the various boom sections is as follows:
FTZ Hydraulics
The hydraulic system for the FTZ Force boom requires a 12 volt power supply to operate the control system plus
one single acting and one double acting hydraulic outlet. The single acting outlet controls boom lift up and down,
whilst the double acting outlet controls wing fold and tilt functions. Oil flow of approximately 5.7 litres per minute at
approximately 145 bar (14500 kpa or 2130 psi) pressure is required for correct operation. The constant speed of
hydraulic movements is maintained by an in-line adjustable flow regulator.
Warning: Due to variations in tractor hydraulics and capacities, care should be taken when operating
the hydraulic system for the first time. It is advisable to adjust the hydraulic flow control (see description
this section) down to the minimum rate before operating the system. Adjust / increase the flow rate once
the system is bled of any air and is functioning correctly.
Warning: Ensure hydraulic lines have not been damaged during shipping. Initial connection and testing
of the hydraulic system should be done cautiously. Incorrect connection of hoses or air trapped in the
system can cause unexpected or violent boom movements.
Warning: Always shut the tractor down when connecting, servicing or adjusting boom hydraulics. Never
use your fingers to locate a leak in a hydraulic system, use a piece of cardboard. Always wear safety
glasses, gloves and protective clothing. High pressure oil can penetrate skin and cause serious injury.
Note: Ensure all fittings are tight and snap couplers are free of moisture and foreign material before
connection. After having operated the boom and the system has filled with oil, check the tractor’s
hydraulic oil level and top up with the recommended product if necessary.

Hydraulic Venting System

General description
The purpose of this system is to seal the atmosphere side of
the hydraulics against dust and moisture contamination and
therefore protect the system from damage that could otherwise
result. The system links the Lift, Tilt and Stabliser Cylinders via a
common sealed chamber and should be checked for integrity as
part of your regular service procedure.

Connecting the hydraulics
Read the safety warnings on the previous page carefully and then proceed as follows:
1. Attach the heavier (3/8”) hydraulic hose to the tractor’s single acting outlet.
2. Attach the smaller (1/4”) hydraulic hoses to the tractor’s double acting outlet.
Hydraulic controls
For tractors with manually operated auxiliary hydraulics a joy stick control handle is supplied, which mounts
directly to the tractors hydraulic lever. Direction of oil flow is controlled manually via the lever and boom functions
are controlled simultaneously via the joy stick switches. For electrically operated auxiliary hydraulic systems, a
remote switch box is supplied enabling control of all boom functions via bi-directional toggle switches.

Joy stick installation and set up
1. Locate the tractor’s hydraulic lever which operates the double
acting outlet you intend to use. Using the universal bracket (J),
mount the joy stick handle (G) to the tractors hydraulic lever (H)
and secure all threads with Lock-tite thread lock or similar.
2. Connect the joy stick power harness (E) directly to the tractors
12 volt DC battery via a convenient outlet, avoiding excessive
cable length. (Note: brown wire is positive, blue wire is negative).
3. Connect the Joy stick control harness (F) to the trailer control
harness (K).
Note: Due to risk of power surge, connection to a 12
volt power source other than the battery (ie: altenator
/ generator circuit) voids warranty. In the absence of a
suitable 12 volt outlet we recommend installation of the HARDI
electric distribution box, part number: 817925
Hydraulic switch box
To control boom functions with electrically operated tractor
hydraulic systems, a remote switch box is supplied.

Switch box installation and set up
1. Mount the switch box in a convenient place in the tractors
cabin and connect the 12 volt power harness (E) directly to the
tractors 12 volt DC battery circuit via a suitable fused outlet.
Avoid excessive lengths of cable. (Note: brown wire is positive,
blue wire is negative). 2. Connect the switch box control harness
(G) to the trailer control harness (F).
Note: Due to risk of power surge, connection to a 12 volt power source other than the tractors battery
circuit (ie: altenator / generator circuit) voids warranty. In the absence of a suitable 12 volt outlet we
recommend installation of the HARDI electric distribution box, part number: 817925.

Operating the boom with the Joy stick control
To unfold the boom using the Joy stick controller, raise the boom
wings clear of the transport brackets by activating the auxiliary
hydraulics lever and the left and right boom wing tilt control
switches (C) and (D) simultaneously.
Next, with the auxiliary hydraulic control lever still activated,
depress the inner fold switch (A) and unfold the inner section fold.
Note: the paralift transport hooks disengage automatically.
Now reverse the oil flow by moving the auxiliary hydraulic lever
in the opposite direction, and once again simultaneously activate
tilt switches (C) and (D) to lower the boom wings to the horizontal
position. Finally, reverse the direction of the auxiliary hydraulic
lever once more and activate the outer fold switch (B) to unfold
the outer wings to the fully extended operating position.
Operating the boom with the remote switch box
To unfold the boom using the remote switch box, engage the
tractor’s auxiliary hydraulic switch to the detente position and lift
the boom clear of the transport brackets by activating both tilt
cylinder switches (C& D) together in the upwards direction.
Next, activate the inner fold switch (A) to unfold the inner sections.
Note: the paralift transport hooks disengage automatically.
Now activate the tilt cylinder switches (C) and (D) simultaneously
in the downwards direction to lower the boom wings to the
horizontal position. Finally, activate the outer fold switch (B) to
unfold the outer wings to the fully extended operating position.
Note: The folding procedure is conducted in the reverse order,
please see “Folding the boom for transport” in the next section for
important additional information.
Boom adjustments
Please note the following points prior to boom adjustments:
1. Ensure the boom is well lubricated (see maintenance section).
2. Connect the sprayer to the tractor.
3. Place the tractor and sprayer on a solid and level surface.
4. Unfold the boom.
5. Shut down the tractor, place gearbox in low gear, engage the handbrake and remove the ignition key.
6. Place wheel chocks in front and behind wheels.
7. If adjusting hydraulic cylinders, depressurise the hydraulics first.
8. Always think the job through first and assess any potential risk.
9. Always use lifting and safety equipment of a suitable load bearing capacity.
Warning: Ensure the area around the
boom is clear of persons and objects
when adjusting, testing or operating the
boom.
Warning: Never disconnect the sprayer
from the tractor with the boom open
unless the centre is fully and adequately
supported.

Damping adjustment (in field)
Fine tuning of the boom suspension is possible by adjusting the
throttle valve screw on the damping cylinder at the bottom of the
boom centre. To achieve the factory setting, Back off the lock nut
and screw the throttle valve (A) all the way in and then out three
full turns.
To obtain more damping: Throttle valve (A) must be screwed
inward.
To obtain less damping: Throttle valve (A) must be screwed
outward.
Boom fold speed adjustment
To adjust the folding speed of the boom, locate the line restrictor
valve (A) on the inner fold distribution block (B) at the top of the boom
centre.
With the boom folded in the transport position and the hydraulic
system safely shut down, adjust the fold speed as follows:
Loosen the feed line coupling (C)
To decrease the folding speed loosen the lock nut (D) and screw the
valve (E) inward. Re-tension the lock-nut (D) and tighten the hose
fittings (C).
To increase the folding speed loosen the lock nut (D) and screw the
valve (E) outward. Re-tension the lock-nut (D) and tighten the hose
fittings (C).
Note: For Damping Cylinder service procedure please
see the maintenance section of this publication.
Spraying with the boom half folded
To spray with the boom at half width, follow the above procedure with the exception of the final stage, unfolding the
inner sections only by pressing switch (A) to the left. Remember to turn off the outer section valves via the 5500
spray control box manual section control (see 5500 controller hand book for details).
Boom tilt function
In order to avoid obstacles etc, the boom tilt hydraulics may be operated independently by activating switches (C)
for the left or (D) for the right hand side individually as required.
Warning: Beware of over-head power lines. Over head power lines present a potentially fatal hazard.
See safety section at the front of this manual for further information and examples of minimum safe
working clearances.

Boom functions continued
Paralift transport hooks
The paralift travel is limited by a transport hook (A) which is
activated by the inner fold cylinder hydraulic circuit. When
activated, the transport hook engages the transport stop on
the lift cylinder body (B) and prevents the paralift from dropping
below the minimum height required for transporting the sprayer
with the boom folded thus preventing damage to the sprayers
mudguards and associated parts.
The illustration to the right shows the hook (A) engaged in the
transport stop on the paralift cylinder (B).

Boom transport position
Ensuring that you have enough ground clearance to do so, fold
the outer wings and raise the paralift to its maximum height.
Note the paralift transport hook (C), which is raised and fully
disengaged.
Caution: As the paralift transport hook is activated by
the inner fold hydraulic circuit, the outer sections of the
boom must be completely folded before activating the
inner fold.
Boom transport position, continued
Next, with the outer wing sections folded and the paralift raised,
activate both tilt cylinders and raise the boom wings to the
maximum tilt position (D), before attempting to activate the inner
fold.

Transport position, inner fold
Activate the inner fold cylinders to swing the boom wings onto the
transport brackets (E).
Ensure that the boom wings contact the vertical support section
of the boom transport brackets, but do not lower the tilt cylinders
until the final stage.
Caution: Do not lower the boom onto the transport
brackets with the tilt function until the paralift has been
lowered and is resting on the transport hooks.

Folding the boom for transport
Note: In order to avoid unnecessary stress to components, it is recommended the folding and stowage
procedure be carried out as follows. Read this section carefully, a little practice will help perfect the
technique.

Boom transport position
Lowering the paralift to engage the transport hooks
Next, lower the paralift to its transport position until the transport
hooks engage with the transport stops on the lift cylinders (F).
The operator can be sure the hooks are engaged when the paralift
comes to rest without the boom contacting the mudguards.
Caution: To avoid damaging the sprayer the transport
hooks must be engaged before proceeding.

Transport position, final stage
Finally, lower the tilt cylinders so the booms come to rest on the
transport bracket assembly (G).
Caution: Under no circumstances should there be any
need for the boom to drag along the rubber pads on the
transport brackets.

Boom support wheels

Boom support wheels (standard)
The boom is equipped with a boom wheel on each wing for use when spraying with low boom settings, for example
on bare ground or crops in the first stages of growth. In later growth stages the wheels should remain folded up.
Boom support wheels - air bag suspended (optional)
An optional heavy duty boom wheel has been developed which
features robust steel construction (A), tapered roller bearing hubs
(B), and pneumatic / air bag suspension (C).
The optional support wheel also features an easy release
mounting system (D) and transport bracket assembly.
Note: For maximum service life the boom wheel must be
regularly maintained, including wheel bearing lubrication,
adjustment and tyre and air bag inflation pressures.
Please see maintenance section for service details.
Caution: When driving on public roads the support
wheels must be secured in their transport position.
Check with your local authorities for details of laws
regarding moving implements on public roads.
Optional boom wheel transport position
In order to transport the sprayer without exceeding maximum
width limitations for implements on public roads, the boom
wheels must be stowed in their transport position as shown in
the illustration. The transport bracket is located on the forward
side of the inner boom wing and stores the wheels on the inboard
side of the boom when folded.
Storage
To store the boom wheel for transport, insert the hooks on the
boom wheel frame assembly (A) into the base of the transport
bracket (B) and swing it upwards (C) until the eyelets pass
through the slot cut in the top of the transport bracket (D).

Securing the boom wheel for transport
With the eyelets on the boom wheel frame (A) passed through
the matching slot cut in the transport bracket (B) secure the as-
sembly by passing the lynch pin (C) through the eyelets and lock
it in place with the spring loaded clevis pin (D).
If mounting the transport bracket for the first time, pass the two
‘U’ bolts (E) over the upper forward member of the inner boom
section (800mm outboard of the inner fold). Secure with nuts and
washers (see spare parts section for detailed drawings).
Caution: The spring loaded clevis pin (D) is a safety
precaution and prevents the lynch pin from working
loose. Do not operate the sprayer without it.

Boom wheel operation
When in use, the wheel is mounted to the boom wing inboard of
the outer section fold as illustrated (right hand side shown). To
fit the wheel for spraying, remove it from the transport position,
and using the same lynch and clevis pins, mount the wheel to
the operating bracket in a similar way as previously described for
transport, being sure to secure it with the lynch and clevis pins.
If fitting the boom wheel kit for the first time, hook the bracket
(A) under the lower wing member (B) and loosely assemble the
‘U’ bolt (C) around the upper forward member of the outer boom
section (D). Pass the two bolts supplied (E) through the holes in
the lower part of the bracket assembly, and clamp it to the lower
boom wing member by tensioning the nuts accordingly.
Air bag inflation
The boom wheel air bag is a pneumatic suspension device, de-
signed to reduce impact and vibration stress being transferred to
the boom, whilst maintaining individual boom wing support.
To inflate or check the air bag pressure, remove the valve cap (A)
and use a conventional automotive type tyre pressure device.

General information
Always store lubricants in a clean, dry and cool place.
Keep oil filling jugs, hoppers and grease guns clean. Wipe lubricating points thoroughly before lubricating.
Avoid skin contact with mineral / petroleum based products for extended periods.
Adhere to directions concerning recommended lubricants and quantities. If no recommended quantity is given,
feed the grease nipple till fresh grease becomes visible.
Note: If the sprayer is cleaned with a high pressure cleaner or liquid fertiliser has been used, it is recommended
to re-apply lubricants according to the maintenance schedule.

Boom adjustment
The FTZ Force boom is built to handle our tough Australian conditions and will deliver years of reliable service
when correctly maintained and adjusted. Please note the following points prior to adjustments:
1. Ensure the boom is well lubricated (see maintenance / lubrication schedule for details).
2. Connect the sprayer to the tractor and place the rig on a solid level surface. Unfold the boom completely.
3. Shut down the tractor, place the gearbox in a low gear, engage the handbrake and remove the ignition key.
4. Place wheel chocks in front and behind wheels.
5. If adjusting hydraulic cylinders, depressurise the hydraulics first.
6. Always think the job through first and asses any potential risk.
7. Always use lifting and safety equipment of a suitable load bearing capacity.
Warning: Ensure the area around the boom is clear of persons when making adjustments and never
disconnect the sprayer from the tractor with the boom unfolded unless correctly supported.
Boom centre and inner section alignment
Ideally the tip of the boom should point slightly forward when
unfolded for spraying.This slight forward angle is achieved by the
alignment / travel stop screw located at the fold between the inner
section and the boom centre.
If necessary adjust the inner section as follows:
1. Depressurize the fold cylinders.
2. Loosen the lock nut (A).
3. Adjust the travel stop screw (B) until the correct setting is
achieved.
4. Tension the lock nut, double check your adjustment and repeat
the process for the other side.
Section alignment and over centre locking mechanisms
The FTZ intermediate and outer section folds incorporate two
critical adjustments which must be maintained regularly.
1. Horizontal alignment between the two wing sections (B).
2. An ‘over centre’ locking mechanism (A) which, when adjusted
correctly, locks the wing sections in place while spraying.
Section alignment
1. With the sprayer attached to the tractor, unfold the boom to
the operating position, switch off the tractor. Prepare the rig
for service as previously described, and depressurise the fold
cylinders.
2. Dis-connect the outer end of the fold cylinder (C) and loosen
the lock nuts (D).
3. Adjust the travel stop screws (B) until the inner and outer wing
sections are perfectly aligned with one another.
4. Re-tension the lock nuts (D).
5. Proceed to the ‘over centre’ locking mechanism adjustment.

Over centre lock adjustment
1. With the outer end of the fold cylinder still disconnected as
previously described, place one hand on the boom and with the
other manually operate the over centre lock mechanism (A).
It should snap open and closed firmly when operated by hand.
2. To set the correct amount of force required to move the lock
through the over centre position, place a torque wrench (B) on
the rigging screw anchor bolt at the extremely of the over centre
lock (C). Prevent rotation of the bolt by using a spanner (D) on
the lower hex.
3. The intermediate lock should snap over centre at a torque
setting of 90 Nm.The lock mechanism on the outer fold (on 3 fold
booms) should operate at 40 Nm of torque.
4. To adjust the mechanism, loosen the rigging screw lock nut
(E) and rotate the barrel of the rigging screw (F) until the correct
setting is achieved. Re-tension the lock nut (E).
6. Re-fit the outer end of the fold cylinder.
7. Check the operation of the mechanism and re-adjust if
necessary. Repeat the procedure for the other side as required.
Boom response adjustment
The FTZ Force boom centre is mounted to the paralift frame via
four link arms (A) with a ball joint on each end (B). The ball joints
are mounted to the boom centre via anchor plates (C) which can
be set in various positions (D) depending on the type of terrain to
be encountered when spraying.
Rule of thumb
For high speed spraying on smooth terrain the ball joint anchor
plates on the boom centre should be set further apart (as in the
case of the sprayer shown in this photo) allowing less freedom of
movement. This type of setting will cause the boom to respond
more quickly to the movement of the trailer.
For slower speed spraying on rough terrain less response to the
trailers movement is desirable so the ball joint anchor plates on
the boom centre should be set closer together allowing the trailer
to move more independently of the boom and therefore reducing
the possibility of the boom striking the ground.
Anchor plates
As a part of your routine maintenance programme, make a point
of checking the tension of the bolts which secure the anchor
plates to the boom centre (A).
This should be carried out after the first 10 hours of operation and
every 25 hours thereafter.
Note: If servicing the ball joints / link arms etc, ensure
you mark the position of the ball end anchor plates and
ensure the link arms are the same length for either side when
reassembled.

Suspension
The FTZ boom is suspended on coil springs (A).
In order to obtain the best spray job, the boom wings must be
parallel with the ground surface. If an abnormal condition exists
the tension of the springs can be adjusted to improve the level of
the boom.
Tension adjustment
1. Loosen the three lock nuts (B).
2. Wind the three spring carrier bolts (C) in or out to tension or
de-tension the springs as required.
3. Check to see the level of the boom wings has been improved,
and re-tighten the lock nuts (B).
Note: When adjusting the coil springs, make sure the
bolts are all adjusted evenly.
Section supports
In order to avoid stress to section components when the boom
is folded for transport, adjustable section support brackets are
provided (A). If the section supports are adjusted correctly, the
outer wing sections will mount the bracket ramp and come to rest
firmly in contact with the rubber pads on the bracket (B).
Adjustment
Inspection and adjustment should take place after the other
section alignment procedures have been carried out. To check if
the support brackets are adjusted correctly:
1. Fold the outer wing sections only and observe the level of
contact between the wing and the rubber pads on the support
bracket (B).
2. If the wing section is not contacting the support pads, loosen
the two bolts (C) and adjust the hight screw (D) until the wing
section is in firm contact with the pads.
3. Re-tension the two bolts (C) and operate to confirm your
adjustment was successful.
Adjusting sequence valves
The order / priority of fluid supply to the fold cylinders is
controlled
by mechanicaly operated sequence valves (A) located at the
intermediate and outer folds.
1. With the outer section folded (valve activated), back off the
lock nuts (B) and the actuator screw (C) so that it just clears the
activating pin in the sequence valve.
2. Next, wind the actuator screw back out until it depresses the
activating pin to a depth of 3 to 4 mm and re-tension the lock
nuts. Note: Use the same principle and setting to adjust the
sequence valve at the intermediate fold.
