1 Safety instructions
The C2A... load cells can be used as machine compo
nents (e.g. with container weighing). In these cases
please note that in order to obtain a high measurement
sensitivity the load cells have not been designed with the
safety factors usually encountered in machine design. If
component fracture may lead to damage to property or
injury to persons, safety measures according to the rele
vant accident prevention regulations (e.g. support against
collapse, overload protection) must be taken by the user.
In chapter 6 „Specifications“, on page 13 we provide
important details in this respect, such as:
Ssave load limit,
Sside load limit,
Sbreaking loads and
Spermissible dynamic loads.
The electronic system processing the measurement
signal should be designed such that no consequential
damage occurs as the result of a failure of the measure
ment signal.
Use in accordance with the regulations
C2A... type load cells have been designed for weighing
applications. Use for any additional purpose shall be
deemed to be not in accordance with the regulations.
To ensure safe operation, the load cells should only be
used as described in the Mounting Instructions. It is also
essential to observe the appropriate legal and safety
regulations for the application concerned during use. The
same applies to the use of accessories.

Safety instructions
4A1572-3.0 HBM: public C2A/…, C2A/…/Exd
The load cells are not a safety element within the mean
ing of its use in accordance with the regulations.
General dangers due to non‐observance of the
safety instructions
The C2A... load cells correspond to the state of the art
and are fail‐safe. The load cells can give rise to residual
dangers if they are inappropriately installed and operated
by untrained personnel.
Everyone involved with the installation, commissioning,
maintenance or repair of a load cell must have read and
understood the Mounting Instructions and in particular
the technical safety instructions.
Residual dangers
The scope of supply and performance of the load cells
covers only a small part of weighing technology. In
addition, equipment planners, installers and operators
should plan, implement and respond to the safety
engineering considerations of weighing technology in
such a way as to minimize residual dangers. Prevailing
regulations must be complied with at all times. There
must be reference to the residual dangers connected
with weighing technology.
Environmental conditions
In the context of your application, please note that acids
and all materials which release (chlorine) ions will attack
all grades of stainless steel and their welding seams.
This may result in corrosion which can lead to the failure
of the load cell. In such cases the operator must take
appropriate safety measures.
Prohibition of own conversions and modifications
The load cells must not be modified from the design or
safety engineering point of view except with our express

Safety instructions
C2A/…, C2A/…/Exd A1572-3.0 HBM: public 5
agreement. Any modification shall exclude all liability on
our part for any damage resulting therefrom.
Qualified personnel
These load cells are only to be installed by qualified
personnel strictly in accordance with the specifications
and with the safety rules and regulations. It is also
essential to observe the appropriate legal and safety
regulations for the application concerned. The same
applies to the use of accessories.
Qualified personnel means persons entrusted with the
installation, fitting, commissioning and operation of the
product who possess the appropriate qualifications for
their function.
Accident prevention
Although the specified breaking load is several times the
max. capacity, the relevant accident prevention
regulations from the trade associations must be complied
with.
Explosion proof versions
Important
Please consider the notes in the document ”Safety in
structions for Ex load cells”, which is attached to the
scope of supply of the C2A/.../Exd load cells.
SUsers must comply with all relevant erection regula
tions during installation.
SThe installation conditions listed in the certificate of
conformity and/or type examination certificate must be
complied with.

Notes on mounting
C2A/…, C2A/…/Exd A1572-3.0 HBM: public 7
3 Notes on mounting
SHandle the transducer carefully.
SThe transducer seating must be horizontal, even and,
together with the transducer mounting surface, it must
be absolutely clean.
SDust, dirt and other foreign matter must not be al
lowed to collect so that the deflection of the trans
ducer is impaired, leading to possible erroneous
measurements.
SDo not overload the transducer (e.g. by unevenly dis
tributed loads); if necessary, provide overload protec
tion (e.g. supports).
SEach transducer should be bridged by a copper wire
(approx. 16 mm2) during or immediately after installa
tion, so that no welding currents can flow across the
transducer.

Load introduction
8A1572-3.0 HBM: public C2A/…, C2A/…/Exd
4 Load introduction
When applied in weighing equipment, load cells are sub
jected to unwanted side forces and moments. These may
arise from deformation of the loaded weighing machine
structure or through thermals strains. To keep the effects
on the measurement resulting from these forces and mo
ments as low as possible, HBM supplies pendulum sup
ports and rubber‐metal bearings as load introduction
components. Both types of load introduction components
enable a design with a degree of horizontal movement
with respect to the load cells.
A deflection causes a reactive force which attempts to
restore the weighing machine to its original position. With
the pendle supports this restoring force is proportional to
the deflection and the current loading and with elastomer
bearings it is just proportional to the deflection. This
means that a different characteristic is obtained, particu
larly under partial loading conditions.
The rubber‐metal bearing also possesses higher damp
ing in the horizontal and vertical directions. In both cases
no stay rods are needed. It is sufficient to limit the hori
zontal movement of the weighing machine structure us
ing mechanical stops (take note of smax in chapter 7, on
page 16).

Connection
C2A/…, C2A/…/Exd A1572-3.0 HBM: public 9
5 Connection
5.1 Cabling
Electrical and magnetic fields often induce interference
voltages in the measurement circuit.
SUse shielded, low‐capacitance measurement cables
only (HBM cables fulfill these conditions),
SDo not route the measurement cables parallel to
power lines and control circuits. If this is not possible,
protect the measurement cable with steel conduit for
example.
SAvoid stray fields from transformers, motors and con
tact switches.
SFor C2A/.../Exd please note, when mounting; the fixed
connection lead must have a mechanical securing.
5.2 Connection technology
Load cells with a strain gage measuring system can be
connected to:
Scarrier‐frequency measuring amplifiers, or
SDC measuring amplifiers suitable for strain gage mea
suring systems.
The load cells are connected using the six‐wire circuit.
The wiring assignment is shown in the following diagram.

5.3 Parallel connection of several
transducers
Load cells can be wired in parallel by joining the load cell
cable core ends of the same color. In this case, HBM
provides junction boxes of the VKK... series, and for use
in potentially explosive areas, VKK2R‐8 Ex junction
boxes. The output signal is then the average of the indi
vidual output signals.
Important
Overloading of an individual load cell cannot then be de
tected from the output signal.

Connection
C2A/…, C2A/…/Exd A1572-3.0 HBM: public 11
5.4 Connection using the four‐wire circuit
Upon connection to amplifiers using the four‐wire circuit,
the cores bl (blue) and gn (green) should be connected,
as should bk (black) and gr (gray). Please take in
account that this causes deviations to the sensitivity and
the temperature coefficient of sensitivity that this causes.
5.5 Cable extension
Extension cables must be shielded and of low capaci
tance. We recommend the use of HBM cables, which
satisfy these requirements.
HBM extension cables, 6 wires:
SKAB8/00‐2/2/2, sold by the meter, order‐no.
4‐3301.0071 = grey or 4‐3301.0082 = blue (only at
intrinsic safe applications)
SCABA1 (cable roll, order‐no. CABA1/20 = 20 m or
CABA1/100 = 100 m in length)
With cable extensions it is important to ensure a good
connection with minimum contact resistance and good
insulation.
When using the six‐wire circuit, the effects of resistance
changes in the extension cable are compensated. If you
extend the cable using the four‐wire circuit, the sensitivity
deviation can be eliminated by adjusting the amplifier.
However, temperature effects can only be compensated
when operating with the six‐wire circuit.

5.6 Notes on cable routing
Route the load cell connection cable so that any con
densed water or dampness forming on the cable can drip
off. It must not be able to reach the load cell. In addition
ensure that no dampness can penetrate the open ends of
the cable.
