Safety instruction
RTN A1153-2.0 HBM: public 3
1 Safety instruction
In cases where a breakage would cause injury to persons
or damage to equipment, the user must take appropriate
safety measures (such as fall protection, overload protec
tion, etc.). For safe and trouble-free operation, the load
cell must not only be correctly transported, stored, sited
and installed but must also be carefully operated and
maintained.
It is essential to comply with the relevant accident pre
vention regulations. In particular you should take into ac
count the limit loads quoted in the specifications.
Use in accordance with the regulations
RTN... type load cell is conceived for weighing applica
tions. Use for any additional purpose shall be deemed to
be not in accordance with the regulations.
In the interests of safety, the load cell should only be op
erated as described in the Mounting Instructions. It is
also essential to observe the appropriate legal and safety
regulations for the application concerned during use. The
same applies to the use of accessories.
The load cell is not safety element within the meaning of
its use as intended. Proper and safe operation of this
load cell requires proper transportation, correct storage,
assembly and mounting and careful operation and main
tenance.
General dangers due to non‐observance of the
safety instructions
The RTN... load cell correspond to the state of the art
and are fail‐safe. The load cell can give rise to residual
dangers if it is inappropriately installed and operated by
untrained personnel.

Safety instruction
4A1153-2.0 HBM: public RTN
Everyone involved with the installation, commissioning,
maintenance or repair of a force transducer must have
read and understood the Mounting Instructions and in
particular the technical safety instructions.
Residual dangers
The scope of supply and performance of the load cells
covers only a small area of weighing technology. In addi
tion, equipment planners, installers and operators should
plan, implement and respond to the safety engineering
considerations of weighing technology in such a way as
to minimize residual dangers. Prevailing regulations must
be complied with at all times. There must be reference to
the residual dangers connected with weighing technol
ogy.
Environmental conditions
In the context of your application, please note that all ma
terials which release chlorine ions will attack all grades of
stainless steel and their welding seams. In such cases
the operator must take appropriate safety measures.
Prohibition of own conversions and modifications
The load cell must not be modified from the design or
safety engineering point of view except with our express
agreement. Any modification shall exclude all liability on
our part for any damage resulting therefrom.
Qualified personnel
This load cell is only to be installed by qualified personnel
strictly in accordance with the technical data and with the
safety rules and regulations which follow. It is also essen
tial to observe the appropriate legal and safety regula

tions for the application concerned. The same applies to
the use of accessories.
Qualified personnel means persons entrusted with the
installation, fitting, commissioning and operation of the
product who possess the appropriate qualifications for
their function.
Accident prevention
Although the specified nominal capacity in the destructive
range is several times the full scale value, the relevant
accident prevention regulations from the trade associa
tions must be taken into consideration.

Mounting
RTN A1153-2.0 HBM: public 7
3 Mounting
When mounting the load cells the following points are to
be noted:
SPlease handle the load cells with care!
SLoad cells are precision transducers, the achievable
accuracy therefore depends very much on correct
assembly!
SUse suitable lifting gear for mounting the weighing
device!
SDo not overload the load cell, not even temporarily
(e.g. by unevenly distributed support loads)!
SUse equal height dummies when carrying out align
ment work that may damage the load cell!
SEnsure point load application in the load cell's direc
tion of measurement. Use spherical thrust pieces with
sufficient radius (HBM accessory).
SAvoid transverse forces and moments (see also the
chapter ”Technical Data”)!
SDepending on the actual design provide for lift-off
protection devices and limit stops!
SBring the force introduction points of the load cells to
the same level. For this purpose, the mounting acces
sories include shims!
SProtect the load cell against
- one-sided heat radiation
- influences caused by subsequent welding work1)
1) Each load cell should be bridged by a twisted copper cable on assembly, or immediately there
after, (e.g. EEK... by HBM= approx. 16 mm2). This is how you prevent damage by welding cur
rents. The grounding of the load cell reduces the hazard of load cell damage by lightning.

Mounting
8A1153-2.0 HBM: public RTN
- major temperature variations!
SIn order to prevent fast wear, the force introduction
point should be greased. Please ensure that you do
not use too much grease as the cell butyl ring will
otherwise stick from a nominal load >4.7 t!
Assembly preparation
SThe site surfaces or foundations must be level and
horizontally aligned.
SThe contact area (baseplate of the load cell) must
meet special requirements (e.g. heat expansion coef
ficient 11⋅10-6/K).
SFor correct functioning, always use the original HBM
baseplate. This is included in the scope of delivery of
the HBM mounting accessories VEN and VPN.
Mechanical sources of error
Transverse forces
SThe load cell is not loaded exclusively in its direction
of measurement, caused by an incorrect assembly or
a construction with insufficient flexural strength.
During operation transverse forces can occur in the fol
lowing circumstances:
1. Breaking forces of a vehicle on a weighing bridge
2. Bending of the construction
3. Expansion of the construction due to temperature in
creases
4. Wind forces in the open air
5. Drive motors / mixers

Mounting
RTN A1153-2.0 HBM: public 9
If the transverse forces remain under the values specified
in the data sheet, measurement errors may occur, but no
lasting damage will be caused on the load cell.
If there is a risk that the permissible transverse forces
are exceeded, suitable measures are to be provided such
as e.g. control arms or shock absorber.
See also the chapter 1 “Safety instruction”, page 3.

Connection
10 A1153-2.0 HBM: public RTN
4 Connection
SRoute the connection cable of the load cell such that
any water condensate that might occur, or any humid
ity, can drip away downwards. It must not ingress into
the load cell in any way. In the connection area of the
cable end, users must ensure that no humidity can
ingress into the open cable.
SThe cable must be routed such that damage to the
external sheath by chafing and/or own movements is
prevented in daily operation.
SThe load cells have been designed in four wire
technology; a shortening of the cable is not permissi
ble.
SIn order to maintain full precision, cable extensions
should be carried out in six wire technology.
SThe cable is suitable for fixed routing, it may not be
bent. The smallest laying radius should not be less
than 300 mm. Tensile straining and twisting of the
cable during and after fitting are not permissible.
Notice
The cable union on the load cell must not be opened un
der any circumstances; if this should occur by mistake,
the load cell must be returned to the manufacturer's
works for repairs.
If elastomer bearings are used, the construction is insu
lated against the foundations. Note in this connection,
DIN/VDE 0100, Part 410, with regard to a necessary po
tential compensation.

Electrical and magnetic fields often are the cause for the
introduction of disturbing voltages into the measuring cir
cuit.
Therefore:
SUse shielded low‐capacitance cable only (HBM cables
meet these requirements).
SDo not lay the measuring cables in parallel to power
cables, especially high‐tension and control lines. If
this is not possible, use steel conduits, for example, to
protect and shield the measuring cables.
SAvoid the stray fields resulting from transformers, mo
tors and contactors.

4.1 Connecting in parallel of several Load
cells
Load cells are electrically connected in parallel by con
necting the same color wire ends of the connection
cable.
Important
The overload of an individual load cell cannot be de
tected on the output signal. The cable extension to the
follow-on electronics should be carried out in six wire
technology.
