Safety instructions
In cases where a breakage may cause injury to persons or damage to
equipment, the user must take appropriate safety measures (such as fall
protection, overload protection, etc.). Safe and troublefree operation of the
load cells requires proper transportation, correct storage, assembly and
mounting as well as careful operation and maintenance.
It is essential to comply with the relevant accident prevention regulations. In
particular you should take into account the limit loads quoted in the
specifications.
Use in accordance with the regulations
HLC / BLC / ELC type load cells have been designed for weighing
applications. Use for any additional purpose shall be deemed to be not in
accordance with the regulations.
To ensure safe operation, the load cells should only be used as described in
the Mounting Instructions. It is also essential to observe the appropriate legal
and safety regulations for the application concerned during use. The same
applies to the use of accessories.
The HLC / BLC / ELC load cells can be used as machine components (e.g.
with tank weighing). Please note in these cases that, in order to provide a
high sensitivity, the load cells have not been designed with the safety factors
normally applied in machine design. The load cell is not a safety element
within the meaning of its use in accordance with the regulations. The
measuring signal processing electronics has to be designed in such a way
that with a measuring signal failure no damages can occur.
General dangers due to nonobservance of the safety instructions
The HLC / BLC / ELC load cells correspond to the state of the art and are
failsafe. The load cells can give rise to residual dangers if they are
inappropriately installed and operated by untrained personnel.
Everyone involved with the installation, commissioning, maintenance or repair
of a load cell must have read and understood the Mounting Instructions and in
particular the technical safety instructions.

5
HLC / BLC / ELC
HBMA11303.1en/de/fr
Residual dangers
The scope of supply and performance of the load cells covers only a small
part of weighing technology. In addition, equipment planners, installers and
operators should plan, implement and respond to the safety engineering
considerations of weighing technology in such a way as to minimize residual
dangers. Prevailing regulations must be complied with at all times. There must
be reference to the residual dangers connected with weighing technology.
In these mounting instructions residual dangers are pointed out using the
following symbols:
Symbol: ATTENTION
Meaning: Possibly dangerous situation
Warns of a potentially dangerous situation in which failure to comply with
safety requirements could lead to damage to property, slight or moderate
physical injury.
Symbols indicating application notes and useful information:
Symbol: NOTE
Refers to the fact that important information is being given about the product
or its use.
Symbol:
Meaning: CE mark
The CE mark enables the manufacturer to guarantee that the product
complies with the requirements of the relevant EC directives (the declaration
of conformity is available at http://www.hbm.com/HBMdoc).

6HLC / BLC / ELC
HBM A11303.1en/de/fr
Environmental conditions
In the context of your application, please note that acids and all materials
which release (chlorine) ions will attack all grades of stainless steel and their
welding seams. This may result in corrosion which can lead to the failure of
the load cell. In such cases the operator must take appropriate safety
measures.
Prohibition of own conversions and modifications
The load cells must not be modified from the design or safety engineering
point of view except with our express agreement. Any modification shall
exclude all liability on our part for any damage resulting therefrom.
Qualified personnel
These load cells are only to be installed by qualified personnel strictly in
accordance with the specifications and with the safety rules and regulations
which follow. It is also essential to observe the appropriate legal and safety
regulations for the application concerned. The same applies to the use of
accessories.
Qualified personnel means persons entrusted with the installation, fitting,
commissioning and operation of the product who possess the appropriate
qualifications for their function.
Accident prevention
Although the specified maximum capacity in the destructive range is several
times the full scale value, the relevant accident prevention regulations from
the trade associations must be complied with. Take into consideration the
values specified in particular in chapter 5 for
− limit loads,
− max. longitudinal forces,
− max. transverse forces.
Option: Explosion proof version
•Users must comply with all relevant erection regulations during installation.
•The installation conditions listed in the certificate of conformity and/or type
examination certificate must be complied with.

Load cell with connection cable, Mounting Instructions
2 Mounting
Please pay attention on the following points forthe mounting of load
cells:
SDo not overload load cells, not even temporarily.
SThe mounting surface must be horizontal, flat across the entire surface, and
absolutely clean. Dust, dirt, and other foreign matter should not collect such
that they have a detrimental effect on the mobility of load cells, thus
falsifying the measured value.
SWhen mounting, or immediately after mounting, each load cell should be
bridged by means of a twisted copper cable (e.g. EEK... by HBM = approx.
16 mm2). In this way, you prevent damage caused by welding currents.
SLoad cell grounding reduces the risk of load cell damage due to lightning.
ATTENTION
Neverload in a direction opposite to the load direction specified (see
arrow on the load introduction front of the load cell). This would cause
measurement errors and the damage of the mounting bolts. If load
direction is correct, the load cell output signal is positive.

the relevant information provided by bolt manufacturers.
NOTE
Missing washers and a base plate strength which is too low, cause most
faults that occurduring load cell use. In particular, this applies to the
strength of the base plate which has a direct influence on the
Hysteresis error" stated in the Specifications.

3 Load introduction
Loads should act as precisely as possible in the load direction. Torsion
moments, offcentre loads, as well as transverse or lateral forces cause
measurement errors and may damage the load cell permanently. Such
interferences must be intercepted e.g. by stay rods or guide rollers, with these
elements not being permitted to take up any load or force components.
In order to minimize error interferences due to load introduction, HBM offers
various proven load introductions for load cell types HLCB... / BLCB... /
ELCB... (versions with counterbore + thread), depending on the mounting
situation:
see chapter 6.1 Accessories"
The load cell type HLCA... (version with tapped through hole) is provided for
use with threaded bolt and locknut. Depending on actual use, the threaded
bolt can be screwed into the tapped through hole in both directions. The
locknut will secure the threaded bolt on both surfaces. Please note the
required locknut torques from 40N⋅m ... 54N⋅m.

HBM A11303.1en/de/fr
4 Electrical connection
Load cells can be connected either to carrierfrequencyamplifiers or
DCamplifiers.
ATTENTION
Electric and magnetic fields often cause interference voltages that are
coupled into the measurement circuit.
Therefore:
Sonly use shielded, low capacity measurement cables
(measurement cables by HBM 1) meet these requirements).
Sdo not route these measurement cables in parallel to power and control
lines. If this is not possible, protect the measurement cable (e.g. by means
of steelsheathed pipes).
Savoid the leakage fields of transformers, motors and contactors.
Load cells can be connected electrically in parallel by connecting up the same
color wire ends of the load cell connection cables. The output signal will then
be the mean value of the individual output signals.
ATTENTION
In such cases, an overload situation on a single load cell cannot be
detected by means of the output signal.

Cable extension
For extending cables, only use shielded low capacity measurement cables
(measurement cables provided by HBM1) meet these requirements). Ensure
that there is a perfect connection with the lowest possible transition
resistance. If you use the 6wire circuit, you may neglect any interference by a
change in the resistance of the extension cables. However, if you extend the
cable using the 4wire technique, the characteristic value deviation can be
removed by adjustment. Temperature influences will not be compensated.
