Statement 1:
DANGER
Electrical current from power, telephone, and communication cables is
hazardous. To avoid a shock hazard:
vDo not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation,
maintenance, or reconfiguration of this product during an electrical storm.
vConnect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electrical outlet.
vConnect to properly wired outlets any equipment that will be attached to
this product.
vWhen possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal cables.
vNever turn on any equipment when there is evidence of fire, water, or
structural damage.
vDisconnect the attached power cords, telecommunications systems,
networks, and modems before you open the device covers, unless
instructed otherwise in the installation and configuration procedures.
vConnect and disconnect cables as described in the following table when
installing, moving, or opening covers on this product or attached devices.
To connect:
1. Turn everything OFF.
2. First, attach all cables to devices.
3. Attach signal cables to connectors.
4. Attach power cords to outlet.
5. Turn device ON.
To disconnect:
1. Turn everything OFF.
2. First, remove power cords from outlet.
3. Remove signal cables from connectors.
4. Remove all cables from devices.

Statement 2:
CAUTION:
When replacing the lithium battery, use only IBM Part Number 33F8354 or an
equivalent type battery recommended by the manufacturer. If your system has a
module containing a lithium battery, replace it only with the same module type
made by the same manufacturer. The battery contains lithium and can explode if
not properly used, handled, or disposed of.
Do not:
vThrow or immerse into water.
vHeat to more than 100 C (212 F)
vRepair or disassemble
Dispose of the battery as required by local ordinances or regulations.
Statement 3:
CAUTION:
When laser products (such as CD-ROMs, DVD drives, fiber optic devices, or
transmitters) are installed, note the following:
vDo not remove the covers. Removing the covers of the laser product could
result in exposure to hazardous laser radiation. There are no serviceable parts
inside the device.
vUse of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those
specified herein might result in hazardous radiation exposure.
DANGER
Some laser products contain an embedded Class 3A or Class 3B laser diode.
Note the following. Laser radiation when open. Do not stare into the beam,
do not view directly with optical instruments, and avoid direct exposure to
the beam.

Never remove the cover on a power supply or any part that has the following
label attached.
Hazardous voltage, current, and energy levels are present inside any component
that has this label attached. There are no serviceable parts inside these

vRack Mounting Instructions and template
Your xSeries Hosting Appliance serial number and model number are located on
the ID label located on the right edge of the xSeries Hosting Appliance bezel as
shown in Figure 1. You need these numbers for configuring your xSeries Hosting
Appliance, and for registering your xSeries Hosting Appliance with IBM.
Note: The illustrations in this document might differ slightly from your hardware.

System requirements
You must have a supported Web browser installed on your remote workstation to
communicate with the xSeries Hosting Appliance through the Appliance System
Manager. The supported browsers are Microsoft
®
Internet Explorer 5.x, or Netscape
Communicator 4.6 or 6.2.
The IBM Advanced Appliance Configuration Utility agent is pre installed on the
xSeries Hosting Appliance. You can use the Advanced Appliance Configuration
Utility to manage one or more xSeries Hosting Appliances. You must install the
Advanced Appliance Configuration Utility console from the Product Supplementary
CD on the remote workstation you are using to manage the xSeries Hosting
Appliance.
Note: The remote workstation running the Advanced Appliance Configuration
Utility must be on the same physical subnet as the xSeries Hosting
Appliance.
Software on the xSeries Hosting Appliance
The following software is installed on the IBM Eserver xSeries Hosting Appliance
v1.0. You might need to install additional components to use all of the software
features.
vRed Hat Linux version 7.1
Red Hat Linux version 7.1 (kernel 2.4.9) is the pre installed operating system.
vIBM Advanced Appliance Configuration Utility
The Advanced Appliance Configuration Utility agent is pre installed on your
xSeries Hosting Appliance. You must install the Advanced Appliance
Configuration Utility console from the Product Supplementary CD on a remote
workstation that is on the same physical subnet as your xSeries Hosting
Appliance. The utility detects IBM Eserver xSeries Hosting Appliances on the
network, and enables you to set up and manage the network configuration for
one or multiple xSeries Hosting Appliances. The IBM Advanced Appliance
Utility provides the following:
–Automatic discovery of xSeries Hosting Appliances
–Point-to-point management
–Installation and management of multiple xSeries Hosting Appliances
–Automatic assignment of static IP addresses from a specified range to newly
installed xSeries Hosting Appliances
–The capability to remotely initiate a factory image restoration
vSphera HostingDirector for IBM Appliances, version 1.0
HostingDirector is the management platform for hosting multiple virtual servers
on an appliance; it is pre installed on your xSeries Hosting Appliance.
HostingDirector provides the following:
–Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS) technology can provide up to 1000 virtual
servers on a single appliance
–Software provisioning across virtual servers
–Reporting capability
–Security
vIBM Director version 3.1
IBM Director, a comprehensive workgroup hardware manager, gives you the
tools you need to centrally mange xSeries servers, IBM NetVista desktops,

IntelliStation workstations, and ThinkPad notebooks, as well as non-IBM Intel
®
processor-based systems. It automates tasks such as taking inventory,
monitoring, and alerting, and puts system health information at your fingertips.
The Director agent is pre installed on your appliance. If you are using IBM
Director, the appliance should appear in your management console.
For performance reasons, if you are not using IBM Director in your enterprise,
you should disable the IBM Director agent installed on your appliance.
To disable the agent:
1. Telnet to the appliance.
2. Log in as root.
3. From the session prompt, run the following script:
/opt/CSM/scripts/twgenable.pl
You can re enable the IBM Director appliance agent by doing the following:
1. Telnet to the appliance.
2. Log in as root.
3. From the session prompt, run the following script:
/opt/CSM/scripts/twgenable.pl

vLegato Backup Agent
A Legato backup agent is preinstalled on the xSeries Hosting Appliance. If you
are already using Legato as part of your system backup strategy, you do not
need to install and configure a Legato backup agent on the xSeries Hosting
Appliance. However, you must supply your own license. A Legato client license
is not provided with the appliance.

Controls and indicators on the xSeries Hosting Appliance
The following sections identify the controls and indicators on the front and rear of
the xSeries Hosting Appliance.
Front view
Power-control button: Press this button to manually turn on or turn off the xSeries
Hosting Appliance.
Power-on light: This green LED lights and stays on when you turn on your xSeries
Hosting Appliance, and blinks when the xSeries Hosting Appliance is in standby
mode.
Reset button: Press this button to reset the xSeries Hosting Appliance and run the
power-on self-test (POST).
System-error light: This amber LED lights when a system error occurs.
Diskette drive activity light: When this LED is on, it indicates that the diskette
drive is in use.
Diskette-eject button: Push this button to release a diskette from the drive.
CD-eject button: Push this button to release a CD from the drive.
CD-ROM drive activity light: When this light is on, it indicates that the CD-ROM
drive is in use.

Rear view
Ethernet 1 link indicator: This amber LED lights when there is an active link
connection on the 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX interface for Ethernet port 1.
Ethernet 1 speed indicator: This green LED lights when the speed of the Ethernet
LAN that is connected to Ethernet port 1 is 100 Mbps.
Power-on light: This green LED lights and stays on when you turn on your xSeries
Hosting Appliance and it will blink when the xSeries Hosting Appliance is in
standby mode. This light duplicates the power-on light on the front of the xSeries
Hosting Appliance.
System-error light: This amber LED lights when a system error occurs. This light
duplicates the system-error light on the front of the xSeries Hosting Appliance.
Ethernet 2 speed indicator: This green LED lights when the speed of the Ethernet
LAN connected to Ethernet port 2 is 100 Mbps.
Ethernet 2 link indicator: This amber LED lights when there is an active link
connection on the 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX interface for Ethernet port 2.
