To use this product you should be experienced in configuring computer equipment. For example,
you should be able to install and configure your OS to recognize peripherals and you should be
able to use software utilities to configure and troubleshoot those installed components.

1.2 Introduction
The GSU31 is comprised of the i960®I/O processor based hardware, firmware and the Intel
Integrated RAID software with an easy to use html interface.
This guide provides Intel Integrated RAID software installation information and provides a set of
instructions to install and configure the GSU31. For detailed information on installing and
configuring the GSU31, see Chapter 2, “Advanced Installation Steps”.

1.3 Gather the Required Hardware and Software
Hardware Requirements
•Server with CD-ROM Drive. Ensure that it is not attached to GSU31.
•One available PCI slot (32bit, 33MHz, recommended)
•Monitor display (resolution of 800 x 600 or higher is recommended)
•Intel®Integrated RAID Controller GSU31 Adapter Card
•PCI 2.2 Compliant System BIOS
1.4 Install the Adapter Card
Installing a Low Profile Backplate
16MB of ECC SDRAM comes permanently configured to the GSU31 controller. It is not
upgradeable. The GSU31 is a low profile PCI adapter that is designed to fit low and full height
form factor computer systems. If you are installing the adapter into a low profile computer, replace
the full height back plate with the optionally supplied low profile back plate. To install the optional
profile backplate (shown in Figure 1-2):
1. Remove both backplate screws on the backplate edge of the adapter.
2. Remove the full height backplate.
3. Position the low profile backplate (shown in Figure 1-2) and attach with two screws.
Installing GSU31 into a System
The GSU31 adapter card comes with the Intel Integrated RAID firmware already programmed into
the flash memory.
1. Power down the system, disconnect power cord(s) and remove the system cover.
2. Install the GSU31 adapter card (see Figure 1-2) into an available PCI slot. Connect one end of
the SCSI cable to the internal (68 pin) or external (VHDCI) SCSI connector on the GSU31
adapter card. Connect the other end of the SCSI cable to the SCSI drives or drive enclosure.
3. Replace the system cover, reconnect power cord(s).
Note: GSU31 will work in a 64bit slot, however, a 32bit, 33 MHz PCI slot is recommended. Consult the
system guide for the target server board to determine an appropriate PCI slot.
Ensure that both ends of the SCSI bus are properly terminated. Consult the documentation for the
drives or drive enclosure for termination details.

1.5 Create a Bootable RAID Volume Using RAID
Configuration Utility
A RAID volume (or logical drive) must be set up prior to installing the operating system. The
volume created in this step will host the operating system. Ensure that the volume’s size is large
enough to contain the operating system. The volume may contain more than just the host operating
system if desired.
Note: The RCU can only configure one RAID volume at a time. If more than one RAID volume is
needed, refer to the Advanced Installation Steps in Chapter 2. By default, the RCU uses all disks

attached to the GSU31 when creating a RAID volume. To exclude a disk from the RAID volume,
make it a pass through disk. For more information on using the RCU please refer to Section 2.2.
1. Turn on the target system with the GSU31 installed. During system boot-up, the message
Press Ctrl-C to run the RAID Configuration Utility appears in the display. Press Ctrl-C when
this message appears to execute the RCU.
2. Follow the screen instructions to create and configure a RAID volume. Ensure that the volume
is large enough and is designated as the boot device when creating the volume. You can verify
it is the boot volume after it has been created by using the custom configuration menu option
in the main menu of the RCU. Reboot when finished.
3. Set the system BIOS boot order. Most operating systems require that the RAID controller be
set as the first hard drive boot entry. Enter your system BIOS and ensure that the Intel
Integrated RAID entry appears as the first hard drive boot device.
1.6 Create an OS Installation Driver Diskette
There are two methods to create a GSU31 Installation Driver Diskette.
Method 1
1. Insert the GSU31 CD-ROM into a different system running Windows 95, 98, NT or 2000. The
CD-ROM’s auto-run feature brings up a menu.
2. Click on the OS Install Diskettes button and then click on the appropriate button for your
operating system.
3. Insert a blank high-density diskette in drive A: and press Enter to create the GSU31
Installation Diskette.
Method 2
1. Insert the Intel Integrated RAID CD-ROM into thetarget system and restart the system to boot
from the CD-ROM.
2. When the ROM-DOS Startup Menu appears select option #1, Make Diskettes.
3. When the Select a diskette to create screen appears select the appropriate installation option
(depending on your OS). A command window appears.
4. Insert a blank high-density diskette in drive A: and press Enter to create the GSU31
Installation Diskette.

1.7.1 Setup and Installation for Microsoft Windows* 2000 and
Windows NT* 4.0
This guide details the steps necessary to setup the GSU31 for local RAID administration. If you
wish to setup remote administration for the GSU31, refer to Chapter 2, “Advanced Installation
Steps” in the GSU31 User’s Manual.

1.7.1.2 Installing Microsoft Windows 2000 or NT 4.0 on a RAID Volume
1. Boot with the Windows 2000 or NT 4.0 CD-ROM.
2. Press F6 as soon as the first blue screen appears to ensure that Windows Setup bypasses mass
storage controller detection.
3. When prompted to specify a mass storage controller, select S to specify additional storage
devices. Insert the appropriate GSU31 Installation Driver Diskette (created in Section 1.6
above) in the floppy drive. Press Enter to select the Installation Driver (see Figure 1-3 for an
example) and continue with Windows Setup.
4. Windows 2000: complete the remainder of Windows 2000 installation and then proceed to
step 5.
Windows NT: After completing the NT installation, install the following components and
software:
—Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 or greater
—Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.00 or greater

5. Insert the GSU31 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. The splash screen in Figure 1-4 appears.
Note: If the splash screen in Figure 1-4 does not appear, you will need to locate the setup
program manually and jump to step c. For Windows 2000, execute the file: <CD- ROM
root>\os_setup\win2k\setup.exe. For Windows NT 4.0, execute the file: <CD- ROM
root>\os_setup\winnt\setup.exe.

6. Click on the Setup button. See Figure 1-4 above. The RAID Software Suite setup program will
run.
7. Complete the installation program using the default selections.
8. Windows 2000 only: A dialogue box stating that a Digital Signature was not found will
appear. Click Yes to continue with the installation.
9. Remove the CD-ROM from the CD-ROM drive and reboot to complete installation.
10. Windows 2000 only: Log onto Windows. The Found New Hardware Wizard window will
auto-launch.

a. When the Install Hardware Device Drivers window (see Figure 2-30) launches for the
Generic I2O Disk, click Next to continue the installation.
b. Uncheck the Floppy Disk and CD-ROM Drives boxes and check the Specify Location box
and continue. See Figure 2-31.
c. Type in the following path for the location of the drivers: C:\Program Files\RAID
Software Suite\Drivers, click OK to continue. Restart the computer when finished.
d. Installation of your GSU31 is now complete. Refer to subsequent chapters in this user’s
manual for additional information.
1.7.2 Setup and Installation for Novell NetWare*
1.7.2.1 Software Requirements

1.7.2.2 Installing Novell NetWare on a RAID Volume
There are two procedures listed below, one for NetWare 4.2 and another for NetWare 5.0. Please
follow the instructions for the version you wish to install.
NetWare 4.2
1. Insert the NetWare Installation CD-ROM, reboot the server, go to the appropriate drive letter
and start the NetWare 4.2 installation.
2. When the device driver installation screen appears, Select additional or modify selected Disk/
LAN drivers.
3. Choose Select an additional driver. Hit Insert to install an unlisted driver. Ensure that the
GSU31 NetWare Installation diskette (created in Section 1.6) is in the floppy drive and hit
Enter. Select BKSTROSM.HAM from the list.
4. Continue with the NetWare installation as normal by following the screen prompts.
5. Once the server installation is finished, complete the installation of the Intel Integrated RAID
software suite by following the steps below.
6. Run LOAD INSTALL.
7. Select Product Options, then Install product not listed. It will tell you that it is going to scan
the A: drive for installation scripts. Ensure the GSU31 NetWare Installation diskette is in the
floppy drive, hit Enter to continue.

8. A screen prompt will ask which components (see below) you wish to install. Select the
following components and hit F10 to continue.

The appropriate files are copied and the AUTOEXEC.NCF and STARTUP.NCF files are
modified as necessary.
Caution: Once the product is installed, check for and remove any duplicate lines in STARTUP.NCF. For
example, NetWare 4.2 installations may insert an extra load line for the module PK411.NLM.
Remove the extra line.
9. After the installation is complete, reboot the server.
10. Load Support Pack 8a and reboot.
11. Installation of your GSU31 is now complete. Refer to subsequent chapters in this user’s
manual for additional information.
NetWare 5
Note: If you do not use the boot capability of the NetWare 5 CD-ROM, then replace step 2-5 below with
steps 2-4 of the NetWare 4.2 instructions above.
1. Insert the NetWare CD-ROM and reboot.
2. After booting, accept the license agreement. Then select Create a New Boot Partition.
3. When NetWare boots again, it will first format the newly created boot partition, and then start
loading files. During this initialization, you will see a white graphical NetWare logo screen.
4. It will eventually load a Welcome screen, asking you to verify the startup directory
(C:\NWSERVER). Hit Alt F10 to exit the installation. At the console, type Down. The
installation exits to the boot drive prompt.
5. Insert the GSU31 NetWare installation diskette created in Section 1.6 into the A: drive. If your
boot drive is C:, then run NWUPDATE.BAT. If your boot drive is other than C:, then create an
NWUPDATE subdirectory and copy all the files from A:\DRIVERS into the NWUPDATE
subdirectory.
6. Remove the diskette from the A: drive and reboot the server. After booting you will be asked
to accept the license agreement. Do so and then select Continue with Existing Partition. You
are now ready to install NetWare 5 on the Intel Integrated RAID volume.
7. Continue with the NetWare installation as normal by following the screen prompts. Select the
Block Storage OSM when prompted.
8. Reboot the server and install Service Pack 4 or higher. Once the server installation is
completed, reboot the server.
9. To install the Intel Integrated RAID software (run the Intel Integrated RAID setup) run
NWCONFIG.
10. Select Product Options, then Install product not listed. It will tell you that it is going to scan
the A: drive for installation scripts. Ensure the GSU31 NetWare Installation diskette is in the
floppy drive, hit Enter to continue.

1.7.3 Setup and Installation for UnixWare* 7.1
1.7.3.1 Software Requirements
•GSU31 CD-ROM
•Hard disk space: minimum 20 MB
•GSU31 UnixWare Installation Disk (HBA diskette) (created in Section 1.6)
•SCO UnixWare 7.1 software with Netscape 4.08 or greater†

1.7.3.2 Installing UnixWare on a RAID Volume on a Stand Alone Server
Follow the required procedure below to install Intel Integrated RAID.
1. Insert the UnixWare installation disk 1 (of 2 disks) and reboot. Install the OS using the install
instruction provided in UnixWare 7 Installation Guide manual. UnixWare will prompt you to

install Host Bus Adapter diskette. At that time insert the GSU31 UnixWare Installation
diskette created in Section 1.6.
Note: During the installation of UnixWare, you will be prompted to install the Network Information
Services (NIS) package. When prompted, defer the installation of NIS by pressing F8 on the NIS
configuration screen. If you decide at a later time to install NIS, you can do so using the pkgadd(1)
command.
2. Install the Netscape browser. The Netscape browser is provided in the SCO UnixWare CD-
ROM Disk 2 of 3.
3. After completing the UnixWare installation insert the GSU31 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive
and mount the CD-ROM.
a. Create a directory to mount the file. For example, type mkdir cdfiles at the prompt.
b. Mount the CD-ROM to the folder by typing:
mount -F cdfs -r /dev/cdrom/cdrom1 /cdfiles
4. Launch the installer by typing the following:
a. Type cd /cdfiles/os_setup/unixware
b. Type sh install to start the install script.

c. Select option 1 to install the software components. The components are shown in
Figure 1-7.

5. Press Enter to select all packages. After completing the installation of the components reboot
the server.
