General safety guidelines
Important: Read before proceeding.
This equipment is a relatively complicated apparatus. During rigging, installation, operation,
maintenance, or service, individuals may be exposed to certain components or conditions including,
but not limited to: heavy objects, refrigerants, materials under pressure, rotating components, and
both high and low voltage. Each of these items has the potential, if misused or handled improperly,
to cause bodily injury or death. It is the obligation and responsibility of rigging, installation,
and operating or service personnel to identify and recognize these inherent hazards, protect
themselves, and proceed safely in completing their tasks. Failure to comply with any of these
requirements could result in serious damage to the equipment and the property in which it is
situated, as well as severe personal injury or death to themselves and people at the site.
This document is intended for use by owner-authorized rigging, installation, and operating or
service personnel. It is expected that these individuals possess independent training that will enable
them to perform their assigned tasks properly and safely. It is essential that, prior to performing
any task on this equipment, this individual shall have read and understood the on-product labels,
this document and any referenced materials. This individual shall also be familiar with and comply
with all applicable industry and governmental standards and regulations pertaining to the task in
question.
Important: Intended installation for this equipment should not be accessible to general public.
All locations must have controlled access so that no unauthorized persons can access the
equipment.
Safety symbols
The following symbols are used in this document to alert the reader to specific situations:
DANGER
Indicates a possible hazardous situation which will result in death or serious injury if correct care is not
taken.
WARNING
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which will result in possible injuries or damage to equipment
if correct care is not taken.
CAUTION
Identifies a hazard which could lead to damage to the machine, damage to other equipment and
environmental pollution if correct care is not taken or instructions and are not followed.
Note: Highlights additional information useful to the technician in completing the work being
performed correctly.
Note: YORK air-cooled chillers incorporate an earth connection for functional purposes only.

Wiring warning
WARNING
External wiring, unless specified as an optional connection in the manufacturer’s product line, is not
to be connected inside the control cabinet. Devices such as relays, switches, transducers and controls
and any external wiring must not be installed inside the micro panel. All wiring must be in accordance
with Johnson Controls’ published specifications and must be performed only by a qualified electrician.
Johnson Controls will not be responsible for damage or problems resulting from incorrect connections
to the controls or application of incorrect control signals. Failure to follow this warning will void the
manufacturer’s warranty and cause serious damage to property or personal injury.
Refrigerant warning
WARNING
Working with chiller vessels which are designed to contain contents under pressure must only be
conducted by fully qualified technicians who have been certified in accordance with EPA Section 608
of the Clean Air Act requirements for the US or equivalently the Federal Halocarbon Regulations and
the Refrigerant Code of Practice for Canada. Refrigerant R-1234ze is classified as an A2L refrigerant
and must be handled in accordance with all governing regulations. Failure to meet this requirement
can result in damage to equipment, release of refrigerant into the environment, contamination of the
operating space for the equipment and pose a risk of personal injury or death. It is the responsibility of
any service technician or operator to adhere to these requirements.

Conditioned based maintenance
Traditional chiller maintenance is based upon assumed and generalized conditions. Instead of
the traditional maintenance program, a Johnson Controls YORK Conditioned Based Maintenance
(CBM) program can be substituted. This CBM service plan is built around the specific needs for
the chiller, operating conditions, and annualized impact realized by the chiller. Your local Johnson
Controls Branch can propose a customized Planned Service Agreement that leverages real time and
historical data, delivering performance reporting, corrective actions required, and data enabled
guidance for optimal operation and life-cycle assurance. The program includes fault detection
diagnostics, operation code statistics, performance-based algorithms and advance rules-based
rationale delivered by the Johnson Controls Connected Equipment Portal.

General chiller information and safety
YORK® YVAM™ chillers are manufactured to the highest design and construction standards to
ensure high performance, reliability, and adaptability to all types of cooling installations.
The unit is intended for cooling water or glycol solutions and is not suitable for purposes other than
those specified in this manual.
Rigging and lifting must be done by a professional rigger in accordance with a written rigging
and lifting plan. The most appropriate rigging and lifting method depends on job specific factors,
such as the rigging equipment available and site needs. As a result, a professional rigger must
determine the rigging and lifting method to be used, and it is beyond the scope of this manual to
specify rigging and lifting details.
This manual contains all the information required for correct operation and maintenance of the
chiller. Read the manual thoroughly before attempting to operate or service the unit.
All procedures detailed in the manual, including commissioning, operation and maintenance tasks
must be performed by suitably trained and qualified personnel.
The manufacturer is not liable for any injury or damage caused by incorrect installation,
commissioning, operation, or maintenance resulting from a failure to follow the procedures and
instructions detailed in the manuals.
Warranty
Johnson Controls warrants YVAM chillers in accordance with the Limited Warranty Engineered
Systems Equipment (Form 50.05-NM2). Johnson Controls warrants all equipment and materials
against defects in workmanship and materials for a period of eighteen months from date of
shipment or 12 months from date of start-up, whichever comes first, unless labor or extended
warranty has been purchased as part of the contract.
The warranty is limited to parts-only replacement and shipping of any faulty part, or sub-assembly,
which has failed due to poor quality or manufacturing errors. All claims must be supported by
evidence that the failure has occurred within the warranty period, and that the unit has been
operated within the designed parameters specified. All warranty claims must specify the unit
model, serial number, order number, and run hours or starts. Model and serial number information
is printed on the unit identification plate.
The unit warranty is void if any modification to the unit is carried out without previously written
approval from Johnson Controls.
For warranty purposes, the following conditions must be satisfied:
• The initial start of the unit must be carried out by trained personnel from an authorized Johnson
Controls Service Center.
• Only genuine YORK approved spare parts, coolants, and refrigerants must be used.
• All the scheduled maintenance operations must be performed at the specified times by suitably
trained and qualified personnel.
• Failure to satisfy any of these conditions automatically voids the warranty. Refer to Form 50.05-
NM2 for complete details.

The following certifications and labels are applicable to YVAM chillers:

Quality assurance and safety
Products are designed, tested, rated and certified IAW, and installed in compliance with applicable
sections of the following standards and codes:
• AHRI550/590: Water Chilling Packages Using the Vapor Compression Cycle
• AHRI 370: Sound Rating of Large Outdoor Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Equipment
• ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 15: Safety Code for Mechanical Refrigeration
• ASHRAE 34: Number Designation and Safety Classification of Refrigerants

Fluorinated greenhouse gases
This equipment contains fluorinated greenhouse gases covered by the Kyoto Protocol.
The global warming potential (GWP) of the refrigerant R-134a is 1,300 and GWP for R-1234ze is 7.
Both use the integrated time of 100 years based on IPCC 5th report 2013, Table 8.A.1.
Do not vent the fluorinated greenhouse gases in this equipment to the atmosphere.
This equipment must be serviced by qualified technicians.
Responsibility for safety
The design and manufacture of the unit ensures compliance with the safety requirements listed
in Quality assurance and safety. However, the person rigging, lifting, maintaining, operating, or
working on any machinery is primarily responsible for:
• Personal safety, safety of other personnel and the machinery
• Correct use of the machinery in accordance with the procedures detailed in the manual
About the manual
The contents of this manual include suggested best working practices and procedures. These are
issued for guidance, and do not take precedence over the previously stated individual responsibility
or local safety regulations.
This manual and any other document supplied with the unit are the property of Johnson Controls
which reserves all rights. They may not be reproduced, in whole or in part, without previous written
authorization from an authorized Johnson Controls representative.
Misuse of equipment
CAUTION
The chiller must either be fenced off or in a secure location with restricted access such as on a rooftop.

CAUTION
This chiller is not intended for use by persons, including children, with reduced physical, sensory, or
mental capabilities. The chiller must also not be used by persons with a lack of adequate experience
and knowledge, unless they have supervision or instruction on the use of the unit by a person
responsible for their safety.
WARNING
Children must be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the chiller.
Suitability for application
The unit is intended for cooling water or glycol solutions and is not suitable for purposes other
than those specified in the instructions. Any use of the equipment other than its intended use or
operation of the equipment contrary to the relevant procedures can result in injury to the operator
or damage to the equipment.
The unit must not be operated outside the design parameters specified in this manual.
Structural support
Structural support of the unit must be provided as indicated in these instructions. Failure to provide
adequate support may result in injury to the operator, or damage to the equipment and building.
Mechanical strength
The unit is not designed to withstand loads or stresses from adjacent equipment, pipework, or
structures. Additional components must not be mounted on the unit. Any extraneous loads may
cause structural failure and can result in injury to the operator or damage to the equipment.
General access
The has unit a number of areas and features that may be a hazard and could potentially cause
injury when working on the unit unless suitable safety precautions are taken. It is important
to ensure access to the unit is restricted to suitably qualified persons who are familiar with the
potential hazards and precautions necessary for safe operation and maintenance of equipment
containing high temperatures, pressures, and voltages.
Pressure systems
The unit contains refrigerant vapor and liquid under pressure that, when released, can be
dangerous and cause injury. The user must ensure to take care during installation, operation,
and maintenance to avoid damage to the pressure system. Only suitably trained and qualified
personnel should attempt to gain access to the component parts of the pressure system.
Electrical
The unit must be grounded. Switch off and isolate and lock-off the power supply to electrical
power equipment before attempting installation or maintenance. Do not attempt servicing and
maintenance on live equipment. Do not attempt to gain access to the control panel or electrical
enclosures during normal unit operation.

Rotating parts
Fan guards must be fitted at all times. Do not remove fan guards unless the power supply has been
isolated. If ductwork is to be fitted, requiring the wire fan guards to be removed, take alternative
safety measures to protect against the risk of injury from rotating fans.
Sharp edges
The fins on the air-cooled condenser coils have sharp metal edges. Take care and use gloves when
working in contact with the coils to avoid the risk of minor abrasions and lacerations.
Frame rails, brakes, and other components may also have sharp edges. Take care when working in
contact with any components to avoid risk of minor abrasions and lacerations.
Refrigerants and glycol
Use gloves and safety glasses when working on the unit. The buildup of refrigerant vapor, from a
leak for example, poses a risk of asphyxiation in confined or enclosed spaces and good ventilation
must be maintained.
Use the refrigerant specifically designated for the unit. Any other type of refrigerant may cause
damage to the equipment and voids the warranty.
To prevent freeze damage in chillers using glycol, the correct concentration of glycol solution that
is suitable for the site ambient conditions must always be used to fill the chiller. See the following
method to select the correct concentration of glycol for minimum local ambient conditions.
To determine the concentration, look at the local minimum ambient temperature for as many past
years that are available. You can find this history through a weather service. This is based on the
minimum ambient temperature for a buffer band of 10R (minimum) down. Use this temperature as
the freezing point of glycol according to its classification. Monitor the glycol density regularly with a
density meter to prevent problems.
The concentration, weight by volume, can be found in Table 3 for ethylene glycol (EG) and Table 4
for propylene glycol (PG). For example, if the local historical minimum ambient is 6°F (-14°C), then
the freezing point of glycol recommended should be -4°F (-20°C). The recommended concentration
is 36% for EG and 39% for PG.
CAUTION
Freeze damage due to insufficient glycol concentration is not covered by the manufacturer warranty.
CAUTION
Do not mix ethylene and propylene glycol in the same system.
CAUTION
To avoid lowering heat transfer efficiency, do not use automative-type glycol, which are formulated with
silicates that tend to gel.

CAUTION
To prevent undetected dilution or loss of glycol, do not use an automatic makeup water system.
Note: Glycol concentration impacts the heat transfer. Chiller performance can be negatively
affected by a higher concentration of glycol.

High temperature and pressure cleaning
Do not use high temperature and pressure cleaning methods, such as steam cleaning, on any
part of the pressure system as this may cause operation of the pressure relief devices. To avoid
corrosion, do not use detergents and solvents for cleaning.

The YORK Model YVAM Centrifugal Liquid Chiller is completely factory-packaged and includes the

Compressor
The compressor is a single-stage centrifugal type powered by a hermetic electric motor, on a
common shaft with a cast aluminum, fully shrouded impeller. The compressor has no inlet guide
vanes and uses a variable geometry diffuser (VGD) for capacity control.
Motor
The compressor motor is a hermetic, permanent magnet, high-speed design with magnetic
bearings. The compressor impeller is overhung from the end of the motor shaft and has no
bearings.
The motor includes angular contact ball bearings that only engage with the rotor shaft during
shutdown after rotation stops or during shutdown due to a loss of power to the magnetic bearings.
The bearing control center maintains correct shaft position in the magnetic bearings.
