Communications
Introduction
This document covers the hardware needed to set up the remote
configuration, monitoring, and alarm dial out capabilities of the ACT2
controller.
For remote configuration and monitoring of the ACT2 controller
installation, as well as for computer monitoring of alarms, additional
Maestro software setup may be needed. See the Programming the
ACT2 Controller Using the Maestro Software Interface Technical
Bulletin for more information.

Installation Options
ACT2 controllers can be set up and the installation can be remotely
monitored by setting up communication between the controller and a
computer running Maestro software. ACT2 controller communication
can be configured several ways:
•A single ACT2 controller can communicate directly with a
computer (Version 2.01 and later).
•A single ACT2 controller can communicate directly with a
computer via a ProLink converter.
•An ACT2 controller network (multiple ACT2 controllers) can
communicate directly with a computer via a ProLink converter.
•An ACT2 controller or network can communicate with a computer
via a modem connection.
In addition, the ACT2 controller can be set up to dial out to various
monitoring devices when an alarm condition is detected.
Alarm Dial-Out Options
The ACT2 controller can be configured to dial-out to the following:
•computer with Maestro software
•printer
•answering service
•audible alarm or strobe light
•pager

Controller Directly to a Computer
Introduction
Connecting an ACT2 controller to a computer that has the Maestro
software installed allows remote programming and monitoring of an
ACT2 controller installation.
A computer can be directly connected to a single ACT2 controller in
two ways:
•ACT2 controllers that are Version 2.01 or later have an external
serial port that will directly connect to the serial port on a PC.
•ACT2 controllers can also be connected to a computer using a
ProLink RS-232 to RS-485 converter connected to the ACT2
controller’s communication terminals.
This section describes hardware installation for both connections.

Key Concepts
Definitions
Straight Through Cable: A straight through cable is used to carry the
signal from the ProLink converter to a modem or computer. It is
available at most computer supply outlets.
Null Modem Cable: A null modem cable (also known as a data
transfer cable) is needed for direct connection to the ACT2 controller
(without a ProLink converter). This type of cable is available at most
computer supply outlets.
ProLink RS-232 to RS-485 Converter: The ProLink converter is
available through Johnson Controls/Encore. It converts the ACT2
controller communication signal into a signal that the computer can
interpret. ACT2 controllers older than Version 2.01 must use this
converter. The ProLink converter is packaged complete with a power
supply and a 9-pin to 25-pin cable.
ACT2 Controller Requirements
The ACT2 controller must be set up for “modem” connection and a
communication ID must be assigned before communication with the
controller will be successful. For information on how to set the
communication ID and mode, see the Programming ACT2 System
Parameters Technical Bulletin.
Computer Requirements
To connect an ACT2 controller to a computer, the computer must meet
or exceed the following criteria:
•386 or better IBMcompatible PC
•Windows3.1, Windows 95, or Windows 98
•Maestro software installed
•One unused, 9-pin or 25-pin, serial port

Hardware Requirements
For direct connection between a PC and a single ACT2 controller
(without a ProLink converter), the following hardware is needed:
•Cable: Depending on the type of serial port on the computer,
female 9-pin to female 9-pin null modem cable, or
female 25-pin to female 9-pin null modem cable
For direct connection with a ProLink converter between your PC and a
single ACT2 controller, the following hardware is needed:
•ProLink RS-232 to RS-485 converter
•Cable: Depending on the type of serial port on the computer,
female 9-pin to male 25-pin straight through cable, or
female 25-pin to male 25-pin straight through cable
•22AWG shielded, twisted pair cable (Belden 9451 or equivalent)

To Do This Follow These Steps:
Directly Connect a Computer
to an ACT2 Controller
1. Turn off the computer.
2. Depending on the computer’s serial port,
do one of the following:
a. Plug the female 9-pin connector into
the serial communication port on the
computer.
b. Plug the female 25-pin connector into
the serial communication port on the
computer.
3. Plug the 9-pin female connector into the
receptacle on the side of the ACT2
controller.
4. Turn the computer back on.
Connect a Computer to an
ACT2 Controller with a ProLink
Converter
1. Turn off the computer and disconnect
power from the ACT2 controller.
2. Depending on the computer’s serial port,
do one of the following:
a. Plug the female 9-pin connector into
the serial communication port on the
computer.
b. Plug the female 25-pin connector into
the serial communication port on the
computer.
3. Plug the 25-pin male connector into the
ProLink converter port.
4. Unscrew the four screws on the cover of
the ProLink converter.
5. Set jumpers J3 and J4 on the inside of the
ProLink converter to the DTE position.
6. Re-attach the cover of the ProLink
converter using the screws that were
removed previously.
7. Connect the communications wire to the
ProLink converter: black wire to the “-”
terminal and white wire to the “+” terminal.
8. Open the front cover of the ACT2
controller.
9. Connect the RS-485 wire to the Remote
Communication Terminals inside of the
ACT2 controller; black wire to the “-”
terminal and white wire to the “+” terminal.
10. Plug in the power for the ProLink
converter.
11. Turn the computer back on and restore
power to the ACT2 controller.

1. Turn off the computer.
2. Depending on the computer’s serial port, do one of the following:
a. 9-Pin Serial Port: Using the female 9-pin to female 9-pin null
modem cable, plug the female 9-pin connector into the male
9-pin serial communication port on the computer.
b. 25-pin Serial Port: Using the female 25-pin to female 9-pin
null modem cable, plug the female 25-pin connector into the
male 25-pin serial communication port on the computer.
3. Plug the 9-pin female connector into the receptacle on the side of
the ACT2 controller.
4. Turn the computer back on.

are using, do one of the following:
a. 9-Pin Serial Port: Using the female 9-pin to male 25-pin
straight through cable, plug the female 9-pin connector into the
male 9-pin serial communication port on the computer.
b. 25-Pin Serial Port: Using the female 25-pin to male 25-pin
straight through cable, plug the female 25-pin connector into
the male 25-pin serial communication port on the computer.
