1 About these installation and operating instructions
These installation and operating instructions should simplify getting to know your JUDO JUDOMAT parallel
water softening system and inform you of its intended applications. The installation and operating instructions
contain important information so that you can use the JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening system,
safely, professionally and economically. They contain basic information that must be observed during
installation, operation and maintenance. Observing this information will help to avoid dangers, reduce repair
costs and increase the reliability and service life of the JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening system.
Alongside the installation operating instructions and the legal regulations applicable in the country and place
of use in respect of accident prevention, the recognised technical regulations for safe and professional work
must be observed.

1.2 General safety instructions
Warning
Any working methods that might endanger safety must be avoided!
Non-observation of these installation and operating instructions and the safety
instructions herein may endanger persons, as well as the environment and the JUDO
JUDOMAT parallel water softening system itself!
The safety instructions do not take into account
Random happenings and events that may occur during installation, operating and maintenance.
Location related safety conditions for the observance of which the operator is responsible, even for
contract installation personnel.
Attention
Unauthorised conversions and changes to the JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening
system or tampering with system components are forbidden for safety reasons!
Do not perform any changes, make any additions or carry out any conversions that
could impair safety without the manufacturer’s written approval!
Never remove safety equipment or deactivate it by making changes to the JUDO
JUDOMAT parallel water softening system!

observed without fail, additional industry-wide and in-house safety instructions remain

1.2.1 Safety instructions for electrical work

Switch off the power supply before working on system components; if this is ignored
severe bodily injuries or even death may result!
All work which may possibly need to be performed while the system is live must only be
performed by qualified electricians certified according to an approved national scheme!

Ensure that electronic or electrical system components are not damaged by splash
water or similar!
1.2.2 Safety instructions for mechanical working
Warning
Before cleaning, maintenance or repair work ensure that the JUDO JUDOMAT parallel
water softening system is hydraulically depressurised!
These activities must only be performed by JUDO customer service or authorised
technical personnel, who know and understand the overall system of the JUDO
JUDOMAT parallel water softening system and its environment!
2 Warranty
The warranty is valid in accordance with our general terms of sale and delivery only if

system components are not opened, tampered with or incorrectly treated in any other way,
Safety guards are used and these are not manipulated or removed,
The operating conditions correspond to the technical specifications,
Inspection and maintenance are performed according to DIN EN 806-5 2012 and DIN EN 14743,
Repairs are only performed with original spare parts by JUDO customer service or authorised
technical personnel.
All work must only be performed by qualified and authorised technical personnel.

2.1 Duties of the operator
The operator of the JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening system is responsible for the following:
Only allow qualified and authorised technical personnel to perform inspection, operation,
maintenance, service and repair as well as the training of the operating personnel.
Performance of inspection and instigation of scheduled servicing at the prescribed intervals (adhere
to DIN EN 806-5:2012 and DIN EN 14743).
Constant availability of the installation and operating instructions at the place of use of the JUDO
JUDOMAT parallel water softening system.
Perform regular visual inspection of the JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening system according
to the conditions of use and the hazard potential to prevent leaks and damage and also check for
correct functioning of the system.
2.2 Transport, storage, disposal
Attention
Transport the JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening system with care in an upright
position, do not knock over, do not transport when there is a risk of frost, also protect
against dust and dirt effects!
Attention
Dry, frost-proof storage location with aggressive atmosphere!
Protect the JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening system against the effects of
coarse dust or dirt, also avoid direct sunshine!
Permissible storage temperature: +4°C to +40°C!
Electrical and electronic scrap must be disposed in an environmentally friendly way by a
responsible disposal facility or specialist company!
Operating resources must be disposed of in accordance with the valid regulations or
routed for reuse and recycling (for operating resources that are subject to particular
conditions, observe the corresponding instructions on the packaging or obtain the
necessary information from the responsible disposal facilities, specialist companies or
from the manufacturer/supplier)!

Attention
Only regenerating salt in stable tablet form that complies with DIN 19604 (EN 973 type A)
must be used. It must not be possible to press it through the support bottom of the salt
dissolving and storage tank!
When undissolved regenerating salt displaces the brine volume and reduces the
regenerating agent use; this can result in capacity losses!

3.4 Application
Natural water contains hardness components in different quantities. Water softening systems are used in all
cases where the water hardness itself or the resulting limescale causes problems and softened or partially
softened water is necessary, e.g. in boiler water treatment, cooling water treatment, water treatment for air
conditioning systems and for the production of process water as well as in many other applications.
3.4.1 Intended use
The JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening system is used for reducing water hardness in rooms not at
risk of explosion with non-condensing and non-aggressive atmospheres within the context of the usage
options named in these installation and operating instructions.
Intended use also includes the reading of these installation and operating instructions, adherence to all the
safety conditions and instructions contained within them and the performance of inspection and maintenance
work at the prescribed time intervals.
Attention
To reduce the hardness to < 0.1 °dH the JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening
systems must be operated with optimum salting, otherwise there is a risk of sudden
increases in hardness!
Other uses are not compliant with the intended use and not permitted!
JUDO Wasseraufbereitung GmbH will not be responsible for the resulting damage, the
operator alone bears the risk!
3.5 Function description
The functioning of the JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening system is based on the ion exchange
principle. The cation exchange resin, which is present in both water softener cylinders can, dependent on the
total hardness, only soften a certain water volume. Thereafter it is exhausted and must be regenerated.
Upon reaching the programmed capacity reserve, regeneration of the exhausted water softener cylinder is
triggered, the other water softener cylinder remains operating during this process. Once regeneration is
completed, the regenerated water softener cylinder is returned to service and the water softener cylinder that
remained in service is regenerated. This ensures that soft water is always available.
Regeneration takes place by the addition of a concentrated common salt solution. In the process, the
calcium and magnesium ions, which as the hardness components are dissolved in the water and deposited
on the cation exchange resin, are displaced by an excess of sodium ions and washed away with the
regeneration wash water. The total salt content does not change in the process. Afterwards the full capacity
of the water softener cylinder is again reached and it is again ready for operation.

4 Installation
Attention
A sufficiently sized floor drain (in accordance with DIN EN 12056) must be installed at
the place of use for the eventuality that leaking of the JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water
softening system or its feed pipe could result in extensive damage!
Additionally we also recommend that the water is shut off if personnel are present in the
vicinity of the JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening system!
Assure yourself that prior to connection of the pipes no impurities can enter the JUDO
JUDOMAT parallel water softening system from the pipe system (e.g. residues from
installation work)!
Accordingly cleaning of the entire new installation may be necessary!
4.1 Requirements for the place of installation
The JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening system must be installed in a dry, frost-proof location
with a condensation-free and non-aggressive atmosphere.
An adequately sized sewer connection in compliance with DIN EN 12056 must be available to drain
away the regeneration wash water (even when there are multiple sequential regenerations) as well
as, in the event of a malfunction, being adequately sized to drain away the water overflowing from
the salt dissolving and storage tank.
The electrical connection (constant voltage, site provided socket) must be in the immediate vicinity of
the JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening system.
A clearance of 50 cm for maintenance and repair work must be available on all sides and above the
JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening system.
4.1.1 Water quality requirements
The water to be softened must be clear, free from solid impurities and free from iron and manganese.
4.2 Installation notes
The JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening system can be connected to horizontal or vertical
pipes, but must not however be installed in a suction pipe.
Install water softener cylinders and salt dissolving and storage tank vertically and stably on a level
surface.
Install the JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening system so that it is free from mechanical
stresses and not beneath any dripping pipes and connect so that it is free from leaks.
Ideally a site supplied pressure gauge should be installed directly upstream of the JUDO JUDOMAT
parallel water softening system in the feed pipe for determination of the flow pressure.
For simple operation and maintenance ensure the specified space requirement is available.
The system-specific operating data must be complied with.
Check the salt dissolving and storage tank for impurities; clean if necessary.

For reasons of hygiene only fill the cleaned salt dissolving and storage tank with
regenerating salt upon initial operation!
If an additional diluting unit is fitted, its separate installation and operating instructions must also be
observed.
The maximum continuous drawing must be regulated dependent on the raw water hardness and/or
the desired residual hardness downstream of the JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening system
(e.g. using a throttling valve and flowmeter or water meter). Where diluting water is used the
throttling valve and flowmeter must be fitted in the mixing water pipe.
If the JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening system is connected to the public water mains,
installation upstream of the water meter is only permitted with the permission of the water company.
Comply with DIN EN 806, DIN EN 12056 and DIN 1988-200.
Observe the separate installation and operating instructions of other devices and systems.
Observe technical information, local installation regulations and general guidelines (e.g. EVU, VDE,
WVU, DIN, DVGW, ÖVGW, SVGW).
Problem solutions and other installation options can be clarified by a JUDO technical consultation.
4.2.1 Filling the water softener cylinders
JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening systems must be filled with cation exchange
resin in-situ as described below!
Observe the usual safety measures when handling filter materials!
Install the water softener cylinders without central control valves in a stable position on a level
surface and fill approximately ⅓ full with clean water using a hose or bucket so that the cation
exchange resin does not damage the bottom nozzle during filling.
Cover the opening of the nozzle rods e.g. with a suitable plug or adhesive tape and place them
centrally in the water softener cylinders.
Carefully fill the system-specific quantity of cation exchange resin (see Chap. 3.3) into the water
softener cylinders and then carefully top them up with clean water.
Remove the plug or the adhesive tape again from the opening of the nozzle rods and clean the
thread of the water softener cylinders.
Push the central control valves with top nozzle and O-ring on to the nozzle rods and screw into the
water softener cylinders in a leak-free manner.
Attention
Manually tighten the central control valve to no more than 27 Nm!

4.2.2 Connection to the water mains
The inlet and outlet of the central control valve are marked with flow direction arrows.
Fit the internally connecting system pipe and connect the JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening
system to the water mains.
Check the suction lances (brine valves) for correct seating and correct as necessary.
Make the brine hose connections between the central control valves and salt dissolving and storage
tanks and ensure they are leak tight.
Make a proper electrical connection between the central control valves (see Chap. 4.3).

4.2.3 Waste water connection
The site supplied 13x3mm fabric hoses for the regeneration wash water of the JUDO JUDOMAT parallel
water softening system and for the safety overflows of the salt dissolving and storage tank must be fitted with
hose clips at the relevant connection and must always be routed downwards to the sewer connection, where
in doing so free outlets must be created above the sewer connection. The fabric hoses must not be reduced
and must not be routed over the JUDO JUDOMAT parallel water softening system. Secure the loose hose
ends e.g. to pipes.
