1 Introduction
1.1 About these installation and operating instructions
These installation and operating instructions should simplify getting to know your JUDO JRSF automatic
backwashing protection filter and inform you of its intended applications. The installation and operating
instructions contain important information so that you can use the JUDO JRSF automatic backwashing
protection filter, safely, professionally and economically. They contain basic information that must be
observed during installation, operation and maintenance. Observance of this information will help to avoid
dangers, reduce repair costs and increase the reliability and service life of your JUDO JRSF automatic
backwashing protection filter.
Alongside the installation operating instructions and the legal regulations applicable in the country and place

1.3 Application
The JUDO JRSF automatic backwashing protection filter removes all coarse and fine solid impurities, that
are bigger than the mesh size of the permanent filter inserts used and which as aeration cells cause pitting
corrosion and consequently can result in malfunctions of valves, control and regulating devices as well as
sensitive devices.
The two alternatively switching filter chambers enable back washing with filtered water without interruption of
operation. Hence this backwashing system enables cleaning of the permanent filter inserts, without unfiltered
water simultaneously being able to reach the pure water side and consequently the downstream building
installation.
1.4 Warranty
The warranty is valid in accordance with our general terms of sale and delivery only if

system components are not opened, tampered with or incorrectly treated in any other way,
Safety guards are used and these are not manipulated or removed,
The operating conditions correspond to the technical specifications,
Inspection and maintenance are performed according to EN 806-5 2012 and EN 13443-1, as well as
for special mesh widths < 80 µm according to EN 13443-2,
Repairs are only performed with original spare parts by JUDO customer service or authorised
technical personnel.
All work must only be performed by qualified and authorised technical personnel.
1.5 Type label
The type label is located on the housing of the linear drive.
So that we can more quickly process questions or orders, please specify the type label data.
2 Safety
2.1 Intended use
The JUDO JRSF automatic backwashing protection filter is used to protect pipe systems and downstream
devices according to DIN 1988 in rooms not at risk of explosion with non-condensing and non-aggressive
atmospheres within the context of the usage options named in these installation and operating instructions.
Intended use also includes the reading of these installation and operating instructions, adherence to all the
safety conditions and instructions contained within them and the performance of inspection and maintenance
work at the prescribed time intervals.

2.2 Duties of the operator
The operator of the JUDO JRSF automatic backwashing protection filter is responsible for the following:
Only allow qualified and authorised technical personnel to perform inspection, operation,
maintenance, service and repair as well as the training of the operating personnel.
Performance of inspection and instigation of scheduled servicing at the prescribed intervals (adhere
to EN 806-5:2012 and EN 13443-1 as well as for custom mesh sizes < 80 µm adhere to EN 13443-
2).
Constant availability of the installation and operating instructions at the place of use of the JUDO
JRSF automatic backwashing protection filter.
Selection of the cleaning medium and performance of cleaning.
Perform regular visual inspection of the JUDO JRSF automatic backwashing protection filter
according to the conditions of use and the hazard potential to prevent leaks and damage and also
check for correct functioning of the system.

2.4 General safety instructions
Warning
Any working methods that might endanger safety must be avoided!
Non-observation of these installation and operating instructions and the safety
instructions herein may endanger persons as well as the environment and the JUDO
JRSF automatic backwashing protection filter itself!
The safety instructions do not take into account
Random happenings and events that may occur during installation, operating and maintenance.
Location related safety conditions for the observance of which the operator is responsible, even for
contract installation personnel.
Attention
Unauthorised conversions and changes to the JUDO JRSF automatic backwashing

Do not perform any changes, make any additions or carry out any conversions that

2.4.1 Safety instructions for electrical work

severe bodily injuries or even death may result!

performed by qualified electricians certified according to an approved national scheme!

2.4.2 Safety instructions for mechanical working
Warning
Before cleaning, maintenance or repair work ensure that the JUDO JRSF automatic
backwashing protection filter is hydraulically and pneumatically depressurised and
drained via the shut-off valve!
These activities must only be performed by JUDO customer service or authorised
technical personnel, who know and understand the overall system of the JUDO JRSF
automatic backwashing protection filter and its environment!
2.5 Transport, storage, disposal
Attention
Transport the JUDO JRSF automatic backwashing protection filter with care, do not
transport when there is a risk of frost, also protect against dust and dirt effects!
Attention
Dry, frost-proof storage location with aggressive atmosphere!

3 Product information
The JUDO JRSF automatic backwashing protection filters (mesh size 0.1 mm) have been
developed and tested according to the requirements of DIN EN 13443-1 and DIN 19628
for mechanical filters and correspond to the technical rules for drinking water
installations in accordance with DIN 1988-200!
The materials and protective coatings used here are resistant to the physical, chemical
and corrosive loads expected to be encountered in drinking water and fulfil the
specifications required by DIN 19628 (Mechanical filters for drinking water installations)!
All materials, protective coatings and auxiliary supplies are hygienically and
physiologically harmless!
The plastics and non-metallic materials used here fulfil the requirements and
recommendations of the German Health Authority (KTW recommendations
(Recommendations for the Hygienic Assessment of Organic Materials in Contact with
Drinking water))!
JUDO JRSF automatic backwashing protection filter JRSF-ATP DN 125 - 200 with custom
mesh size (0.03 mm, 0.32 mm, 0.5 mm or 1.0 mm) upon request!
3.1 Scope of supply
JUDO JRSF automatic backwashing protection filter comprising
Welded steel housing with flange connection according to DIN EN 1092 plus ½ " female threaded
connector for differential pressure gauge, coated with plastic for corrosion resistance, 2 filter
chambers with inspection glasses on both sides.
2x permanent filter inserts mesh size 0.1 mm (stainless-steel filter and support fabric)
Linear drive including 2.5 m connecting cable with 8-pin plug
Control unit including mains connection cable with mains plug and connecting cable with coupling
Differential pressure gauge including mini-ball valve, 5 m control line (hose 6x4 mm), required
connection components plus installation and operating instructions (only model JRSF-ATP DN 125 -
200)
Shut-off valve with pneumatic drive, single-acting with stroke limiter
Direct-acting 3/2 way solenoid valve with hand lever, exhaust throttle and 0.5 m hose 6x4 mm for
control medium

3.2 Function description
Backwashing is implemented automatically (time-controlled or controlled by differential pressure with time
priority) by the control unit of the JUDO JRSF automatic backwashing protection filter. In this respect the filter
flap is controlled in operating and back-washing position via the linear drive based on the pulses of the Hall
effect sensor, which are balanced in the factory dependent on the filter. Backwashing water is discharged
into the drain via the shut-off valve.
Operation: The raw water to be filtered flows through both filter chambers, whereby all impurities that are
bigger than the mesh size of the JUDO JRSF automatic backwashing protection filter used, are retained on
the permanent filter inserts. When doing so the shut-off valve is closed.
Backwashing: If the filter flap is commanded so that it is in the backwashing position for filter chamber 1 and
the pneumatic drive of the shut-off valve opened using control medium via the solenoid valve, the impurities
deposited on the permanent filter insert of the 1st filter chamber are flushed out via the shut-off valve. At the
same time, the 2nd filter chamber remains operating so that filtered water can continue to be drawn.
If the filter flap is next commanded so that it is in the backwashing position for filter chamber 2, the impurities
deposited on the permanent filter insert of the 2nd filter chamber are flushed out via the shut-off valve. At the
same time filtered water can still be drawn via the 1st filter chamber. After backwashing is completed, the
filter flap is controlled so that it returns to the operating position and the shut-off valve closed.
To obtain an effective backwashing outcome, a flow pressure downstream of the JUDO
JRSF automatic backwashing protection filter of at least 1.5 bar is required, which if
necessary can be achieved by a site-provided pump upstream of the JUDO JRSF
automatic backwashing protection filter for adjustment of the filter output or by a site -
provided shut-off valve for regulation of the filter outlet!
The backwashing water flow must be adjusted via the stroke limiter of the pneumatic
drive to approximately 30% of the rated flow (see Chapter 3.5)!
If these values are undershot, for example if there is a free outlet downstream of the
JUDO JRSF automatic backwashing protection filter or if open circuits exist (cooling
circuit), then adequate backwashing results are no longer guaranteed!
Dependent on the degree of soiling of the permanent filter inserts, multiple backwashing
processes may be necessary!
Attention
If the upstream pressure falls significantly below 1.5 bar, then backflow preventers must
be used to ensure that the still transporting supply pipes cannot become empty!

3.5.2 T-control or TP-control and differential pressure gauge
The time-controlled backwashing (T-control), which must be matched to the local
circumstances and requirements via the weekly timer, but which in general and during
long quiet phases must take place at least monthly, takes priority over differential-
pressure-controlled backwashing!
Differential-pressure-controlled backwashing (TP-control) only takes place during
discharge of filtered water because there is only a differential pressure at the JUDO
JRSF automatic backwashing protection filter when there is a flow of water!
The weekly timers or the backwashing interval are not affected by differential-pressure-
controlled backwashing!
If the differential pressure is still present after the 10th backwash or after approximately
5 minutes, a fault indication is issued and the control unit locks the system!
If the differential pressure does not reduce, the cause must be cleared, the control unit
briefly switched off and the fault indication acknowledged!

Filtered out impurities from the raw water remain on the
permanent filter inserts so that there is an increased differential
pressure between filter input and output which is registered by
the differential pressure gauge.
If the differential pressure reaches the value set at the differential
pressure gauge for microswitch S1 (max. 0.5 bar) and if it exists
for at least 20 seconds, the control unit triggers automatic filter
backwashing.
Optionally, a fault indication can also be registered via
microswitch S2 (approx. 0.3 bar > S1).

3.5.3 Solenoid valve

The direct-acting solenoid valve is pre-assembled in the factory and is used as a pilot valve for the
pneumatic drive of the shut-off valve. Output A is discharged in the volts-free state. As soon as the linear
drive has reached its limit position for backwashing of the respective filter chamber, the solenoid valve opens
for the time programmed under the “Backwashing time” parameter. The JUDO JRSF automatic backwashing
protection filter can be manually drained via the hand lever, which after pressing can be locked by turning in
the clockwise direction.
See Chapter 6.1.3 for setting of the closing speed of the shut-off valve via the exhaust
throttle!
3.5.4 Pneumatic drive

The single-acting pneumatic drive and the shut-off valve are pre-assembled in the factory. During
backwashing, the pneumatic drive is actuated by the solenoid valve via control medium, the shut-off valve
opens and backwashing water arising is discharged into the drain. Bleeding of the pneumatic drive by the
solenoid valve causes closing of the shut-off valve by spring force.

4 Installation
Attention
In the event that a leak at the JUDO JRSF automatic backwashing protection filter could
cause severe damage, it should be ensured that when personnel are not present the
water is blocked off by the site-provided shut-off valve in the filter inlet!
4.1 Requirements for the place of installation
The JUDO JRSF automatic backwashing protection filter must be installed in a dry, frost-proof
location with a condensation-free and non-aggressive atmosphere.
Ensure there is enough space available on all sides for installation, maintenance and repair work
and also for ready accessibility.
Clearance of at least 300 mm between the filter cover and, for example, a wall is
necessary to permit replacement of the permanent filter inserts!
An adequately sized sewer connection in compliance with DIN EN 12056 must be present to be able
to accept the backwashing water without water backing-up (even in the event of several sequential
backwashing processes). The flushing water line must be of the same size as the flushing water
connection of the respective shut-off valve and routed so that it slopes continuously downwards to
the drain, while a clear outlet is created above the drain connection.
If a retention basin is set up because the waste water connection is too small, then it must be
capable of accepting the flushing water (even in the event of several sequential backwashing
processes). Likewise a free outlet above the retention basin must be maintained.
If a retention pond (pump sump) is installed for the backwashing water, it must be ensured that the
pump used there can drain the backwashing water off (even in the event of several sequential
backwashing processes) and/or that an alarm is triggered upon “overfull” of the retention pond.
An electrical connection (constant voltage, site provided socket) must be provided in the immediate
vicinity of the JUDO JRSF automatic backwashing protection filter.
Dry and filtered control air must be provided on site for actuation of the pneumatic drive.
