1. Removetheeight
screwssecuringtheuppercoverus-
ing
a# 2 Phillips screwdriver.
2. Removethetwo screws marked Q fromthecontrol
unit,andinstallthesuppliedbosses.
3. Plug the
interface
boardontothe7 pin
connector
(J5)
and
9 pin
connector
(J6)
asshownintheillustration.
4. Securethecircuit
boardusingthetwoscrewsremoved
in
stepnumber
2.
5. Removethe plasticplug
that is currently installedin
theACCl jack
area,at theupperrearcornerof thera-
dio.
6. Install theDINconnector
usingthebracketsupplied,
as
shown
in
theillustration.
7. Install
the EPROM
(Erasable
andProgrammableRead
Only
Memory)
intothe vacant
socketon the circuit
Doard.

a #2 phillips
head
screwdriver.

mounting
bracket

chassis

swing

bracket

towards

AT (antenna
tuner)
unit.Be
especially
carefui
of the wiringharness.

the shield
covering

boss

andsecure
it with the screws
provided
with
theinterface
kit.
5. Connect
the
connector
onDigital
A unit
to
the
intetface
unit
as
shown
inFig.
4-6.
6. Install
theexpansion
EpROM
(Erasable
andprogram_
mable
Read
Only
Memory)
into
thevacant
socket
on
the
digital
unit.
Orientation
of
this
component
is
critical
for
proper
operation
ofthe
radio,
and
interface.
Caution:
Install
theEPROM
sothat
the
notch
in
the
endis
onthe
same
end
as
thenotch
in
the
lC
socket.

7. Replace
theshield
cover. Do not pinch
anywires
under
the
cover
when youtighten
it
down.
8. Reinstall
the
speaker
mounting
bracket,
confirming
that
the connector
located
on the left side of the digital

unlt
is
secure,
and
notpinched
under
the bracket.

Operation
Most
computers
handle
dataintheform
of"bits",
and
"by-
tes". A bit is the smallest
piece
of information
thatthe
computer
canhandle.
A byte
iscomposedof 8 bits.This
is
themost
convenient
formformost
computerdata.This
datamaybe
sentintheform
ofeither
serialor
parallel
data
strings.The
parallel
modeisfaster,
butmore
complicated,

while
the
serialformis
sloweritrequires
less
complicated
equipment,
andthereforeisless
expensive.
Serial
transmission
ofdata
occurs
overasingleline
using
time-division
methods.
Thisuse
of
asingle
line
alsooffers
theadvantage
ofreducing
thenumber
of
errorsduetoline
noise.
For
controlofthetransceiver
viathe
computeronly
three
linesaretheoretically
required:
transmit
data
(TXö),
re-
ceivedata
(
RXD
),andground
(GND).
From
a practical
standpointitis
alsonecessary
toincorporate
somemeans
ofcontrolling
when
thisdata
transfer
willoccur.We
don't
wantthe
computerandtransceiver
sendinginformation
at
the
sametime!This
is
controlledbvthe
RTSand
theCTS
lines.
ThelF-232C
and
the
lF-10A/1OB
areusedin
conjunction
toprovide
voltage
conversion.
RS-232C
dealsinvoltages
aboveand belowTTL levels,
and must be convertedto
prevent
damage
to the transceiver.
This interface/con-
versionis
handled
bvthelF-232C.
The
actualcommand
seguence
wouldbe
similarto those
described
below:
For
example,the radio
is placed
intothetransmit
mode
whenever
the
character
string
"TX"
is
sentfrom
thecom-
puter.
The
characterstring
"TX"
is
called
a command.lt
tellsthetransceiver
to do something.
There
areapproxi-
mately
25 to 30 different
commands
availableforcontrol
ofthetransceiver.
These
commandsmaybe incorporated
into
a computer
program
written
inBASIC
or
anyotherhighlevellanguage
