1. Brief description of the SANARIUM Control
Unit 16033
The Klafs-SANARIUM control unit enables the convenient operation of your SANARIUM. Three or four
permanently programmed standard programs are available for each form of bathing
(Sauna/SANARIUM).
Modifications of the settings in any of the standard programs are stored in an individual program. One
individual program is available for each form of bathing.
The following operating values can be changed within the setting range before and during operation
via the control panel:

Sauna
with temperatures between 85 - 100 °C and a low relative humidity.
SaunaPUR
the new development from Klafs brings back the tradition of Finnish stone sweat baths.
Thanks to approx. 100 kg of olivine stones in the sauna heater, sauna bathing is even more
beneficial, intensive raponsing is possible at the same time. SaunaPUR creates the feeling of earthy
warmth in a Finnish sauna.
The sauna must be pre-heated to 70 - 85 °C a long time. Afterward, the heater is switched off by
the SaunaPUR function at the beginning of bathing.
The slowly falling temperature can be compensated by frequent raponsing. The new form of
bathing makes sauna bathing possible without clicking sounds and with reduced electromagnetic
radiation.
Warm Air Bath
with a particularly mild climate, temperatures between 45 - 60 °C and a relative humidity of up to
approx. 20 %.
SANARIUM operation
Soft steam bath
as a mild and humid bath, with temperatures between 48 - 60 °C and an absolute humidity of up
to 72 g/m
3
.
Tropical bath
with temperatures of up to 75 °C and an absolute humidity of up to 72 g/m
3
.
In both bathing types, the temperature and absolute humidity are regulated by a microprocessor
control unit.
Aroma bath
with the same climatic values as the soft steam bath, albeit with the additional vaporization of
high-quality herb and aroma extracts. This enables the effect of the soft steam bath to be
optimized.

Forms of bathing
The desired effect of each form of bathing in your Klafs SANARIUM is to help improve your
health and prevent future health problems.
Therefore: Do not overdo it!
This applies to:
dtemperature
drelative humidity
dbathing duration.
Do not act simply according to the stated bathing times, but according to your own
condition. Leave the cabin straight away if you are not feeling well.
The Klafs SANARIUM is made up of the following components:

2. Intended Use
The SANARIUM control unit 16033 is designed only for the standard control of approved sauna heaters
and evaporating machines (registered by the Klafs company at VDE or TÜV - official German control
institute) (intended use).
Any other use is considered to be in violation of the intended use! The manufacturer will accept no
liability for damage caused as a result of such application; the operator takes the sole responsibility for
the associated risks. The intended use also includes adherence to the operating, maintenance and
repair instructions stipulated by the manufacturer.
The control unit 16033 must only be operated, maintained and repaired by persons who are familiar
with the control unit and informed about the associated risks. The current VDE regulations, as well as
other generally recognized safety regulations, are to be observed. Unauthorized modifications to the
control unit rule out any liability for resulting damage on the part of the manufacturer.
3. General safety information
Read through the operating instructions and safety information before using the control unit!
All of the passages in this operating manual which concern your safety are marked with
this symbol. Please convey all safety information to all other possible users.
dDisconnect the control unit from the mains before opening the control unit housing!
dThe control unit may only be connected to the mains voltage by an electrician who is authorized
to carry out such work in your area!
dIn accordance with VDE regulations, connect the sauna and SANARIUM systems to the mains via a
permanent connection only. Use the fault current switch I

≤0.03 A with a contact opening of
at least 3 mm in the connection supply line.
dInform the Klafs customer service in the event of faults which cannot be eliminated by an
authorized electrician!
dOnly use original Klafs spare parts!
dUnauthorized alterations to the control unit are not permitted!
dFit the control unit in accordance with the installation instructions.
dElectric lines within the cabin and the cabin walls must be insulated with silicone.
dBefore operating the control unit, make sure that there are no combustible objects on or near the
sauna heater. RISK OF FIRE!
dDo not use the sauna to dry laundry!
dNever add raponsing liquid in concentrated form. Only use in the stated concentrations
(approx. 20-30 drops to 1 litre of water)!
dOnly Klafs raponsing extracts may be used as the raponsing liquid!
dNever store the bottle with raponsing liquid in the cabin!
dCheck the sauna heater for damage at regular intervals.
dNever put herbal extracts as used during SANARIUM operation directly into the evaporator. Fill one
fourth of the scent cup with water outside the cabin and add the herbal extracts drop by drop
according to the instructions on the bottle. Then re-attach the scent cup to the steam outlet!

The setpoint specifications are controlled by Klafs Control. The operating elements on the
control unit are blocked. Automatic operation.
The power release of the heater is requested by the key switch.
Klafs-IMES-1 is connected. There is no fault during the exchange of data between Klafs-
IMES-1 and the control unit.
The climate manager is connected and running.
The fan speed is automatically controlled by the climate manager.

5.1. Switching on/off the cabin light.
1. Press the button A.
.The cabin light goes on and the respective symbol appears in the display.
The cabin light can also be switched on when the master switch is off (e.g. for cleaning
the cabin).
5.2. Setting the time and water hardness
Setting the time
1. Switch off the control unit via the master switch.
2. Hold down the button and simultaneously switch on the master switch.
.Thetimeandtheservicesymbolflashinthedisplay.
3. Set the time using the up/down buttons.
.Each press of the button changes the value by 1 minute. If the button is held down for a
prolonged period, the value will change more quickly.
4. Confirm the set value using the button.
.The time stops flashing and the two digits for the water hardness setting begin to flash.
Setting the water hardness
'The procedure for setting the time (steps 1 to 4) must first have been completed or ended.
5. Set the water hardness using the up/down buttons .
.The setting range lies between 0 and 30 °dH. Ask responsible waterworks for the water hardness
in your area.
6. Confirm the set value using the button.
.The display stops flashing. The control unit goes into standby mode. The time appears in the
display.
5.3. Switching on/off standby mode
1. Press the master switch on the left side of the housing.
.When the master switch is switched on, the control unit is in standby mode and can be
operated via the control panel. The time appears in the display.

5.4. Starting sauna operation
RISK OF FIRE!
Before operating the control unit, always make sure that there are no combustible
objects on or near the sauna heater.
To have a sauna empty the evaporator water tank.
'See Chapter 5.11. - Putting the evaporator out of operation.
1. Press the Bbutton.
.The operating mode selected most recently and its settings appear in the display.
2. If necessary press the Bbutton again until SAUNA appears in the display.
'If other values are to be used for the selected program - see Chapter 6.
Or:
3. Select the desired sauna program using the up/down buttons.
.Each further press of the button displays the next sauna program.
4. Start sauna operation using the button.
.At the end of the heating phase the bathing visitor symbol appears in the display. The sauna is
ready for bathing.

5.5. Starting the SaunaP UR form of bathing
Make sure that the evaporator water tank is empty.
'See Chapter 5.11. - Putting the evaporator out of operation.
.Requirement: Only possible during sauna operation. Setpoint temperature must be reached.
The symbol must appear in the display.
'Start sauna operation if required, see Chapter 5.4.
.It is possible to start the SaunaPUR form of bathing on the control unit or on the internal display
using the SaunaPUR - button (optional).
1. To select the SaunaPUR form of bathing, use the left/right buttons on the control unit.
2. Use the button to start the form of bathing.
.If the temperature for the SaunaPUR form of bathing has not yet been reached, appears in the
control unit display.
.During the SaunaPUR form of bathing appears in the control unit display.
.After approx. 20 minutes or a temperature drop of approx. 15 Kelvin in the sauna cabin, the
SaunaPUR form of bathing ends automatically. The sauna heater starts heating again.

5.6. Starting SANARIUM operation

Before operating the control unit, always make sure that there are no combustible

'Put the evaporator into operation as described in 5.10.
1. Press the Bbutton.
.The operating mode selected most recently and its settings appear in the display.
2. If necessary, press the Bbutton again until SANARIUM appears in the display.
'If the values for the selected program are to be changed - see Chapter 6.

3. Select the desired SANARIUM program using the up/down buttons.
.Each further press of the button displays the next SANARIUM program.
4. Start SANARIUM operation using the button.
.At the end of the heating phase the bathing visitor symbol appears in the display. The
SANARIUM is ready for bathing.

5.7. Ending a program
Bathing or preselection mode (Sauna or SANARIUM) can be ended during the ongoing program.
1. The control unit ends the program automatically at the end of bathing duration
or
2. To end the bathing program ahead of time – press the Bbutton until END appears in the display.
.The bathing program ends automatically three seconds after the last press of a button. The control
unit goes automatically into standby mode. The time appears in the display.
3. After a bath in the SANARIUM it is required to drain the unused water out of the water tank and
the evaporator system for reasons of hygiene.
'See Chapter 5.11. - Putting the evaporator out of operation.
The bathing program used last is saved at the end of the program.
After the bathing programs are called using the Bbutton, the control unit shows the
bathing program used most recently first.
Automatic subsequent drying program after SANARIUM operation
DAfter bathing operation, the air vent in the cabin must be engaged in position 4 if an air vent outlet
is installed.
.If the SANARIUM was in operation for more than 10 minutes, the subsequent drying program is
started at the end of the program automatically. In this case the dryer symbol will appear in
the display. The remaining time for the subsequent drying program appears in the right digital
display together with the hour glass symbol .
.The heater heats up again, this causes increased ventilation. The cabin is ventilated by these
measures.
.At the end of the subsequent drying program the control unit goes into to standby mode
automatically. The time appears in the display.
Airing the cabin after sauna operation or the subsequent drying program
DAfter sauna operation or after the end of the subsequent drying program open the cabin door for
a while!

5.8. Remote control (optional)
The remote control can be delivered as an optional feature. Refer to the delivery papers for the items
included in delivery.
Function
The remote control is used for:
dstarting and ending sauna/SANARIUM operation
dChanging over between the individual forms of bathing
dSwitching on and off the cabin light.
When the remote control is connected, the symbol appears in the control unit display.
.The
light and the operating modes on the remote control and on the control unit can be operated
independently of each other.
Switching on/off the cabin light:
1. Press the light button H.
.Switching off is locked during bathing operation.
Switching on/off bathing operation:

1. Switch on the master switch on the control unit.
2. Press the mode button G. The LED of the selected bathing program shines.
3. The selected program starts automatically three seconds after the last press of a button.
.The next operating mode is selected by each further press of the button.
.If the SANARIUM was in operation for longer than 10 minutes before the end of the program, the
subsequent drying program starts automatically at the end of the program. During the subsequent
drying program, the END LED flashes on the display of the remote control. The LED goes out at the
end of the subsequent drying program.

Starting the SaunaPUR form of bathing
.Requirement: Setpoint temperature must be reached. The symbol must appear in the display.
'Start sauna operation if required, see Chapter 5.4.
.It is possible to start the SaunaPUR form of bathing on the control unit or on the internal
display (optional).

Press the SaunaP UR button .
.If appears in the 7 segment display, wait until the temperature for the SaunaPUR form of
bathing is reached. Then try again.
.During the SaunaPUR form of bathing the
SaunaP UR operating mode LED shines.
.After approx. 20 minutes or a temperature drop of approx. 15 Kelvin in the sauna cabin, the
SaunaPUR form of bathing ends automatically. The sauna heater starts heating again.

Fill the evaporator only when it is cold.

Refill SANARIUM M evaporator
Refill the evaporator while in a warm state:
The difference in temperature leads to
mechanical tensions in the tank which can
become noticeable by a noise during
refilling.

Do not add any additives to the water.
1. Close the drain cock (1) – move the drain cock to
the left.
2. Fill the evaporator with water at the filling unit (2).
.The filled quantity can be read off the filling level
indicator (3).

Fill the scent into the scent cup
1. Take the scent cup (4) off the steam outlet (6)
with the scent fork (5).

Risk of fire!
Do not fill the scent cup on the heater.
2. Fill the scent cup with diluted scent.
3. Re-insert the scent cup (4) in the steam outlet (6).

2. Open the drain cock (3) – move the drain cock
to the right.

cock (3) must be moved back to the left.

1. Take the scent cup (4) off the steam outlet (6)
with the scent fork (5).
2. Rinse the scent cup with water.

5.11. Putting the evaporator out of operation
SANARIUM S
Put the evaporator out of operation in the event
of longer breaks in operation.
If the yellow or red LED shines (1):
Follow the maintenance instructions in 8.3.
1. Close the angle valve (2) for the water supply.
2. Press the BLOW-OFF button (3) until the steam
cylinder is empty.
3. Press the master switch (4) OFF.
