TheKongsbergMesotechM3Sonarisacompact,versatilemultibeamsonar.
Multibeamsonarshaveanarrayoftransducersthat
simultaneouslytransmitspings(soundpulses)ata
speciedfrequencytocoveralargeareainlesstimethan
asingle-beamtransducer.Togeneratedata,computer
softwareassignsacolourrangecorrespondingtothe
amountofsoundreectedoffatarget.Thedistancetothe
targetisdeterminedbythelengthoftimeittooktoreceive
thetransmittedacousticpulse.
Bycombiningthehighrefreshrateofaconventional
multibeamsonarwithanimagequalitycomparabletoasingle-beamsonar,theM3Sonar
provideshigh-resolutionimagesthatareeasytointerpret.TheM3Sonardetectsobjectsout
to150metresandhasa120°to140°eldofview,allowingyoutoseethefullunderwater
pictureinreal-time.
TheM3Sonarprovideswide-anglefull-rangesituationalawarenessandconcurrent
ultra-shortrangeimagingwithdynamicfocusing.Foroptimizedobstacleavoidance,the
M3Sonarusesvariableverticalbeamwidth.

SonarMultibeamsonar.

TheSonarProcessorrunstheM3softwarethatmanages
communicationwiththeSonarHead,performsall
beamformingandimageprocessingandpresentsthesonar
imagery.TheSonarProcessorcommunicateswiththe
sonarthroughastandardEthernetcable.

Powersupply
TheSonarHeadrequiresaDCpowersupplytorun.
Normally,theDCvoltageissuppliedinthelocationwheretheSonarHeadismounted,such
asonaremotelyoperatedvehicle(ROV).Atestcableandpowersupplyisavailablefor
orderasanaccessory.Thetestpowersupplyusesa24VDCswitchingpowersupply.

TheSonarHeadincludestransmitandreceivetransducersandtheelectronicstogenerate
thetransmitpulseanddigitizethereceivedsignal.ThesonardataissenttotheM3Sonar
ProcessorusingastandardEthernetlink.

Thefollowingsafetyprecautionsmustbefollowedatalltimesduringinstallationand
maintenancework.
WARNING
Thevoltagesusedtopowerthisequipmentarepotentiallylethal.Youmustnever
workaloneonhigh-voltageequipment!
•Youmustalwaysswitchoffallpowerbeforeinstallationormaintenanceworkonthe
M3Sonarsystem.
Usethemaincircuitbreaker,andlabelthebreakerwithawarningsignthatinforms
othersthatmaintenanceorinstallationworkisinprogressonthesystem.
•Forsafetyreasons,twopersonsmustalwaysbepresentduringtroubleshootingwith
powerON.
•Readandunderstandtheapplicablerstaidinstructionsrelatedtoelectricshock.
•Whenevermaintenanceisinprogress,itisessentialthatarstaidkitisavailable,and
thatallpersonnelarefamiliarwiththerstaidinstructionsforelectricalshock.

Maintenancephilosophy
AllmaintenanceontheM3Sonarmustbedoneaccordingtothemaintenancephilosophy
denedbyKongsbergMesotech.
KongsbergMesotechdenesthreelevelsforpreventiveandcorrectivemaintenance.
1Organisationallevel
YouwillonlyperformlimitedpreventiveandcorrectivemaintenanceontheM3Sonar.
Thereisnoneedfortechnicaleducationortraining,andnoneedforanyinstruments.
Typicaltasksareexteriorcleaning,changingfusesandperformancetests.
2Intermediatelevel
YouwillperformoverallpreventiveandcorrectivemaintenanceontheM3Sonar.We
recommendedthatyouareaneducatedengineer.Youshouldbeexperiencedwith
computerizedand/ormechanicaldesign,computersoftwareandmechanicalsystems.
Itisfurtherexpectedthatyoucanusestandardelectronicinstruments,suchasan
oscilloscopeandotherdigitaltestinstruments.YoushouldbetrainedbyKongsberg
MesotechtomaintaintheM3Sonar.
Typicaltasksincludebasictroubleshooting,performanceandoperationaltesting,and
modulereplacements.
3Depotlevel
YouwilldoadvancedtroubleshootingandmaintenanceontheM3Sonarandrelevant
circuitboardsandmodules.Youmustbeaneducatedengineer.Youshouldbe
experiencedwithcomputerizedand/ormechanicaldesign,computersoftwareand
mechanicalsystems.
Itisfurtherexpectedthatyoucanusestandardelectronicinstruments,suchasan
oscilloscopeandotherdigitaltestinstruments.YoushouldbetrainedbyKongsberg
MesotechtomaintaintheM3Sonar.
Typicaltasksareperformanceandoperationaltesting,circuitboardandmodulerepair
(ifandwhenapplicable)andreplacementofmajoritems.
Theinformationisthismanualhasbeenpreparedfortheorganisationalandintermediate
maintenancelevels.
Note
Thismanualdoesnotdescribethemaintenanceoftheperipheraldevicessuchasprinters,
displaysandcommercialcomputersnotprovidedbyus.Navigationsensorsandother
peripheraldevicessuchasgyro,speedandmotionreferencesensorsarenotdescribed.

itemsrequirespecializedproductionandtestfacilities.Thesecircuitboardsandmodules-
aswellasthirdpartydevices-arenotdesignedforneitheron-boardnordepotlevelrepair.
Intheeventofafailure,thefaultycircuitboardormodulemustbereplaced,andthen
returnedtoKongsbergMesotechforrepairorreplacement.

Weassumethatyouareequippedwithastandardsetoftools.Thistoolsetmustcomprisethe
normaltoolsforelectronicandelectromechanicaltasks.Thisincludesdifferentscrewdriver
types,pliers,spanners,acablestripper,asolderingironetc.Eachtoolmustbeprovidedin
varioussizes.Werecommendthatalltoolsaredemagnetizedtoprotectyourequipment.

Ifoneormorespecialtoolsarerequiredforatask,thesearespeciedintherelevant
procedure.
Itisimpossibletocreateadetailedlistofallpossibleerrorsanderrorsymptomsinthe
M3Sonar.
However,keycomponentsthatfailwillinmostcasesbedetectedbythetoolsyouhave
available.
