theircatch.Thedisadvantage
withechosoundersisthefact
thattheylookstraightdown.
TheSN90offersthehigh
resolutionofanechosounder,
butalsoalargehorizontal
rangethatallowsyoutond
sh-evenclosetothebottom
-fromadistanceofseveral
hundredmeters.
ThelargefrequencybandwidthmakestheSN90idealforspecieslikepollock,cod
andsaith.
AforwardlookingSN90isaveryefcienttoolfortrawlersduringthesearchphase.
Sincethetransducerisplacedinthevessel’sbow,theSN90willnotsufferfromthe
acousticnoisegeneratedbythehull,machineryandpropellers.
Thephysicalinstallationangleofthetransducermustbedeterminedbasedonthedepth
inthevessel’snormalshingwaters.Evenwithaxedinstallationangle,theSN90will
servewellinotherwaterstooduetotheswathandtiltfunctionality.

UsingSimradSN90onpurseseiners
Forpurseseineapplications,theSN90transducerismountedontheportorstarboard
sideofthehull,facingtheseine.
SincetheSimradSN90doesnotuseahullunit,youcanhavefullcontrolofthecatch
situationwithoutretractingthetransducer.Thetransducer’sprotectedpositionwill
preventdamagefromthepursewire,andstillgiveyoufullcontrolwhilesettingand
retrievingthenet.
TheSN90allowsyoutorunalongsideaschoolofshandobserve,andyoucananalyze
theschoolwithoutpassingoverit.Thisislikeusingahorizontalmountedechosounder,
butwithalotmoreaccuracy,andwithdedicatedsoftwareandpresentationformats.Fish
avoidanceisminimized,andmoreaccurateinformationabouttheshintheschoolcan
beobtained.Y oucandetectunwantedspecies,catchthecorrectsizeandestimatethe
volumeoftheschoolbeforesettingthenet.
Inpurseseineoperations,thelargefrequencybandwidthmakestheSN90idealforboth
mackerelandtuna,andevenforherring.
SN90views
TheSN90presentstheechodatausingdifferentviews.Allinformationfromonesingle
pingisshowninallviewssimultaneously.Eachviewcanoperatewithanyoperational
frequencyintheavailablerange,andtheycanbesetupwithdifferentoperational
parameters.
Whichviewstosee,andhowtheyarrangedintheSN90presentation,iscontrolledby
thepresentationmodeschosenbythetabsonthestatusbar.

Youcantraintheslicewithinthecurrentlyselectedswathwidth(90,120or160°).

cursorposition.

TheSN90offersthreeinspectionbeams;Centre,StarboardandPort.Eachinspection
beamhasanopeningangleof5x5°,andallowsyoutoinvestigatecertaintargetsin
moredetail.Theinformationfromtheinspectionbeamsarepresentedintheirown
views.
ThetiltoftheCentreinspectionbeamfollowsthetiltyouhaveselectedinthe
Horizontalview.Y oucantrainthisbeamwithinthecurrentlyselectedswathwidth
(90,120or160°)usingtheTrainbuttonsontheoperatingpanel.
Oncetherelevantviewis"active",theStarboardandPortinspectionbeamsare
controlledindividuallyusingtheTrainandTiltbuttonsontheoperatingpanel.Youcan
alsousetheBearingandTiltfunctionsontheMainmenu.
Youcanchangethephysicalsizeanyviewbyclickingontheviewborder,andthendrag
ittocreatealargerrectangle.Notethatthesizeoftheotherviewswillbereduced
accordingly!

a0.1to40kHzbandwidthwithcentrefrequencyfrom70to120kHzinstepsof1
kHz.Thebandwidthcanbesetupindividuallyforeachsonarview.Thebeamshavea
horizontalcoverageareaofmaximum160°,andtheverticalbeamwidthistypically6°.
Thebeamscanbetiltedfrom+10to-90°in1°steps.Inadditiontothis,threeadjustable
split-beaminspectionbeamsoftypically5x5°canbeusedforamoredetailedstudyofa
schoolofsh,suchasobservingshbehavior,targetstrengthandbiomass.Theabsence
ofahullunitallowsforeasierandlessspacedemandinginstallation,andthetransducer
iseithermountedushwiththehullplating,orinastreamlinedblister.Thetransducer
installationremovesthechancetogettangledupordamagedbywires,andgreatly
reducestheriskofbeingdamagedbyobjectsinthewater.
Greatemphasishasbeenplacedongivingthebestpossiblesonarpresentationsona
highresolutioncolourdisplay.TheSN90isequippedwithSimrad’scelebratedsignal
processingsoftware.ItincludesHyperbolicFMtransmissions(alsoknowas"Chirp")to

andbeamformingisperformedinafastdigitalsignalprocessingsystemusingthefull
dynamicrangeofthesignals.Inadditiontothetraditionalsinglefrequencytransceiver
system,theSN90containsanadvancedfrequencymodulatedltersystem(FM).The
SN90ProcessorUnitiscontrolledbytheMicrosoft®Windows®operatingsystem.
Thisallowsforaexiblechoiceofpresentationmodes,andforforalargerangeof
userapplications.
