TheSonarProcessoristhecomputerthatcontrolstheM3SonarPHS.Itisavitalpartof
theM3SonarPHSPortableHydrographicSystem(PHS).
Inthispublication,thecomputerisreferredtoastheSonar
Processor.
TheSonarProcessorrunstheM3softwarethatmanages
communicationwiththeSonarHead,performsall
beamformingandimageprocessingandpresentsthesonar
imagery.TheSonarProcessorcommunicateswiththe
sonarthroughastandardEthernetcable.
M3SonarInterfaceUnit
TheM3SonarInterfaceUnitisatelemetryjunctionboxwhichalsoprovidespowerto
allthesensors.
TheSeapath130sensorunit,MotionReferenceUnit
(MRU),Soundspeedsensor,M3SonarHead,andSonar
ProcessorallconnecttotheM3SonarInterfaceUnit.The
connectionportsarealllocatedonthefrontpanel.
AnexternalpowersupplyconnectstotheM3Sonar
InterfaceUnit,providingpowertoallsystemunits.

Thesensorunitrunsthenavigationsoftware.ThissoftwarecombinestheGNSSsignaland
theinertialmeasurementstodetermineaccurateposition,heading,attitudeandheavesignal.
ThissoftwareusesKongsbergSeatexASadvancedtruemulti-referencealgorithmsfor
real-timeparallelprocessingofallavailablecorrectionsignals.
Thesensorunitincludesthe

•CablethatconnectstotheM3SonarInterfaceUnit

TheSonarHeadincludestransmitandreceivetransducersandtheelectronicstogeneratethe
transmitpulseanddigitizethereceivedsignal.
M3SonarHeadmodelnumber922-20220000(Ethernet
withSyncand1PPS)isusedfortheM3SonarPHS.In
theM3SonarPHS,theSonarHead(!)isattachedtothe
bottomofthePoleMount.TheSonarHeadconnectsto
theM3SonarInterfaceUnitthroughaheadcablewith
100MbpsEthernetand1PPStimesynchronization.
Note
TheM3SonarHead’ sblackpolyurethanetransduceris
delicate.AlwayskeeptheGuardRingandprotectivecover
overthetransducerduringinstallationandstorage.
MotionReferenceUnit
TheMotionReferenceUnit(MRU)isspeciallydesignedforhighprecisionmotion
measurementsinmarineapplications.
TheMRUismountedinalightweightsubseabottle,rated10metres.
TheMRUcableconnectstotheM3SonarInterfaceUnittointegratewith
Seapath130GNSSsensor.
TheMotionReferenceUnitisverysensitivetoimpacts.Becarefulnot
todroptheMRU.Theelectronicsinsidewillbedamagedandneedtobe
returnedtothemanufacturerforrepair.

Inordertoensureaccuratemeasurements,adedicatedsoundspeedsensorispositioned
closetotheSonarHead.
ThesoundspeedsensorcableconnectstotheM3SonarInterfaceUnit
tooutputthereal-timesoundspeedtotheM3software.

TheM3SonarPHSPoleMountprovidespreciseandeasybolton/offofangesforall
thesensors.

Generalsafetyrules
Thefollowingsafetyprecautionsmustbefollowedatalltimesduringinstallationand
maintenancework.
WARNING
Thevoltagesusedtopowerthisequipmentarepotentiallylethal.Youmustnever
workaloneonhigh-voltageequipment!
•Youmustalwaysswitchoffallpowerbeforeinstallationormaintenanceworkonthe
M3SonarPHS.
Usethemaincircuitbreaker,andlabelthebreakerwithawarningsignthatinforms
othersthatmaintenanceorinstallationworkisinprogressonthesystem.
•Forsafetyreasons,twopersonsmustalwaysbepresentduringtroubleshootingwith
powerON.
•Readandunderstandtheapplicablerstaidinstructionsrelatedtoelectricshock.
•Whenevermaintenanceisinprogress,itisessentialthatarstaidkitisavailable,and
thatallpersonnelarefamiliarwiththerstaidinstructionsforelectricalshock.

Thesupplyvoltagetotheequipmentmustkeptwithin±10%oftheinstallation’snominal
voltage.Maximumtransientvoltagevariationsonthemainswitchboard’sbus-barsarenot
toexceed-15%to+20%ofthenominalvoltage(exceptunderfaultconditions).
UninterruptiblePowerSupply(UPS)requirements
ObservetheserequirementsrelatedtotheUninterruptiblePowerSupply(UPS).
TheUninterruptiblePowerSupply(UPS)musthavethecapacitytoindependentlymaintain
powertotheM3SonarPHSforaminimumof10minutes.
ThisensuresthattheM3SonarPHScanbeturnedoffinacontrolledmannerintheevent
ofapowerfailure.
