Device overview
This equipment is a fundus camera which is capable of mydriatic and non-mydriatic photography
with two angles of view: 50° and 30° (45° and 27° for non-mydriatic photography).
You can record photographic data with 35-mm film, video and so forth.

Optical principals of fundus photography
(See the figure “Principals of Fundus Photography” on Page 7)
Lighting system
① Observation lamp ⇒ Ring slit
<
Non-mydriatic photography
>
Illumination light goes through the infrared permeable filter and filtered infrared light
passes through the non-mydriatic ring slit.
<
Mydriatic photography
>
Illumination light goes directly through the mydriatic ring slit.
<
FA
>
Illumination light goes through the FA exciter and the excited light with the FA
compatible wavelength passes through the mydriatic ring slit.
② Ring slit ⇒ Patient’s eye
In all photography modes, illumination light becomes ring-shaped after it passes
through a ring slit and reflected by the perforated mirror. Then the reflected light is
condensed by the objective lens and directed to the fundus.
Observation/Photography system (Patient’s eye ⇒ Finder or Camera)
③ Patient’s eye ⇒ Variable angle lens
Illuminated fundus image is captured by the objective lens and directed though the
perforated mirror, the focusing lens, and the variable angle lens.
※
When using a vision corrective lens or a FA barrier filter, the fundus image passes
through such a lens or filter before it reaches to the focusing lens.
④ Variable angle lens ⇒ Finder or CCD Camera

Non-mydriatic photography
>
Fundus image directed through the variable angle lens is reflected by a mirror and
captured by a CCD camera for non-mydriatic. Captured fundus image is displayed on
the LCD monitor.
<
Mydriatic photography
>
Fundus image directed through the variable angle lens is reflected by the mirror towards
the finder that allows you to observe the image.
<
FA
>
Fundus image directed through the variable angle lens is reflected by the mirror towards
the finder that allows you to observe the image. However, when using a barrier filter,
you may observe the part of fundus image that is excited by the filtered illumination
light.
⑤ Photographic Modes and Cameras
<
Mydriatic/Non-mydriatic/FA
>
- Selecting “35-mm film” -
When pushing the shatter switch illuminates the flashlight, the lower return mirror
pops up and a 35-mm film captures the image. At the same time, the image is
captured into the data card.
- Selecting “Electronic Image” -
When pushing the shatter switch illuminates the flashlight, the upper return mirror
moves aside and a camera connected to the video adapter captures the image.

5. Preparing for Part Replacement
5-1 Removing optical head unit
①
Using the
Allen wrench supplied with
VX-10
α
, loosen the bolts and remove the cable installation
plate.
②
Remove the two connectors that connect to the power supply.
※
When it is difficult to unplug the larger connector, insert the connector puller (a common
tool for VX-10 and VX-10i) supplied with VX-10
α
into appropriate space around the
connector and carefully pry out the connector.
③
Rotate the tilting handle to tilt the optical head unit to the top position.
④
Using the
Allen wrench supplied with
VX-10
α
, loosen the bolts holding the optical head unit and
remove the unit.
※
When loosening the bolts, hold the optical head unit securely.

Turn the power switch off and unplug the power supply cable before proceeding the following
procedure.

5-2 Removing optical head unit outer cover
①
All outer covers of the optical head unit are removable with the optical head unit kept installed
on the tilt arm. Before proceeding to any further procedure, rotate the tilting handle to tilt the
optical head unit to the top position.

Remove the cap located on the cover top, undo the screw and pull out the picture angle knob.
③
Undo 4 screws from the positions shown below and remove the cover.
④
Undo 3 screws and remove the cover from the other side as shown below.
⑤
Remove the cap for electric flash compartment.
⑥
Undo 2 screws and slide out the inner cover from the tilting section as shown below.
⑦
To remove the focusing knob, you need to remove a cap placed over the knob retaining screw
using a flat-head screwdriver. Then, l
oosen the
screw and remove the knob.

Remove
the tilt arm and the optical head unit before
proceeding to the steps below.

Undo 4 screws from the power supply unit and remove the power supply unit cover.

Undo 2 screws from the power supply unit and remove the panel cable installation plate.

Remove the connecter and the earth line exposed after removing the power supply unit cover
in the step

there are two other screws in the same position on the opposite side.

Loosen 2 screws holding the dipswitch on the rear of the right switch panel (when viewed from
the controllers side) and remove the screws and the cover together.

Slowly lift up the panel.

apply excess force since cables are still connected.

Undo the screw and disconnect the earth line.

Pull out 2 cables from the PCB on the right side of the panel.

Remove the cable cramp and slowly remove the panel.

Make sure that the dipswitch is not caught when removing the panel.

6-2 Replacing optical head unit main PCB

Disconnect all connectors connecting to the optical head unit main PCB and undo 5 screws.
Push the lock to the direction shown below, and remove the PCB.

Install it by following the removing steps in the reverse order.
