Introduction to HBS
TheHBS(HybridServoSeries)serieshybridservosofferanalternativeforapplicationsrequiringhigh
performanceandhighreliabilitywhentheservowastheonlychoice,whileitremainscost-effective.
Thesystemincludesahybridservomotorcombinedwithafullydigital, highperformanceeasyservo
drive.Theinternalencoderisusedtoclosetheposition,velocityand currentloopsinrealtime,just
likeservo systems. Itcombinesthebestof servo and steppermotortechnologies,anddeliversunique
capabilitiesandenhancementsoverboth,whileatafraction of thecostofaservo system.
Getting Start
TogetstartyouneedoneHBSdrive,onehybridmotor(stepperdrivewithencoder)and onepower
supplyforafirsttimeevaluation.Afull installationshouldincludeanindexersuchaspulsegenerator,
PLCormotioncontroller.APCwithatleastoneserialportoronePCwithUSB-RS232converter,you
canrotatethemotorinPCsoftware.ItisrecommendedtouseanindexerinsteadofPCsoftwareto
verifythefullfunction of theHBSdriveand motor.

Connecting PowerSupply
Powersupplyconnectionisthesimplestthingthroughthismanualbecauseithasonlytowwires:
positivewireandnegativewire.Howeveryoushouldcautiontheincorrectconnectionpolarity.The
HBSdrivea6-pinpluggablescrewconnectorthatisusedforbothpowersupplyconnectionand
motorconnection.Lookingatthedrivecoveryoushouldfindtheprinted “+Vdc”and “GND”symbol.
Connectthepositivewireto “+Vdc”terminalandconnectthenegativewireto “GND”terminal.Note
thatthepowershouldbeoff whenyoumaketheaboveconnection.

mountedinthemotorofferssuchinformation.NotethattheHBSdrivewill notworkwithout
encoderfeedback.
ForHBS86orHBS86H,astheencoderoutputofthemotorisaHDD15(HighDensityD-Sub 15-pin
connector)butthedrivesencoderinputisascrewterminal,youneedonemore
extension/conversioncablefortheencodersignalconnectionbetweendriveand motor.Oneendof
thisextension/conversioncableisaHDD15 socketand theotherend is6flyingwireswiththecable
shielding. ForHBS57,theencoderoutputcanbeconnected to HBSdrivedirectly.

signalinputisdifferential,itcanalsointerfacewithPNP(Sourcing)orNPN(Sinking)typecontrol
signal.IfthecontrollersoutputcircuitisPNP(Sourcing)type,thepulse,directionand enablesignal
sharethesame ground terminalfromthecontroller. Andifthecontroller soutputcircuitisNPN
(Sinking)type,boththepulse,directionand enablesignalarerefertothesame positiveterminal
(5V/24V) fromthecontroller.
Fortheenablesignal,apply0VbetweenENA+and ENA-orleavethemunconnectedtoenablesthe

needed.Thusyoucan usethisconverterto simulatetheserialportfromaUSBport.
ConnecttheHBSdrivetothePC sserialportortheUBS-232converterviatheRS232 communication
cable. Thepowershouldbeturnedoff whenyouperformanyconnections! Turnonthepowerand
startthesoftwarein PC.
Thesoftwareappearsa Connecttodrive windowwhenyouopenit.Thebaud rateanddevice
address arefixedand youonlyneedtoselectthecomportaspertheactualserialportorthe
mappingportofaUSB-232 converter.Checkthe DeviceManager forthemappingportnumberof
theUSB-232 converter.
HBSDrive Configuration
Itisnecessaryto configuretheHBSdrivefordifferentHBSmotorbeforesendingpulsetoit.Thedrive
shouldbeproperlyconfiguredbeforepower-up.Otherwiseyoumayencountertheproblemslike
highmotorheating,bigmotornoiseorevenmotorstallduetoweaktorque.Foraquickstartofthe

Calculating Rotation Speedand Angle
Youmayalsowanttocalculatethemotorrotation speedand rotationangle,beforecommandingany
motion.If thepulsefrequencyand countsareknown,theycan becalculated asfollows:

Noweverythingisready.You canstartthecontrollerorpulsegeneratortorotatethemotor.Actually,
anydevicewhichgiveshigh-to-loworlow-to-highlevelchangescanbeusedtomovethemotor.Ifit
isyourfirsttimeinstallation,itisrecommendedtodisconnectthemotorshaftfromtheloadincase
ofaccident.Youcanstartfromlowpulsefrequencythengoingtohigh.Onetriggerededgeofthe
pulsemakesthemotormoveonemicroangle.ThereisnominimumspeedlimitforHBSservo
howeverthemaximumrunningspeedwillbedetermined bytheinputvoltageand currentsetting.

Rotating theHBSMotorin PCSoftware
Noteveryonehasamotioncontroller.Oryoumaynotknowwhatmotioncontrollerisand howto
buyone.Butyou shouldhaveapersonalcomputerwhichhasatleastoneserialportorUSBport.You
canrotatetheHBSmotorinPCsoftware!Thereisasimpleemulatingcontrollerthatisusedfor
self-testintheHBSdrive.Itisnotafullfunctionalitycontrollerbutitdoeliminatesthetroublesto
setup arealmotioncontrollerwhenyouwanttotesttheHBSdrivesorverifytheconnectionincase
ofproblem. However,theperformanceyou seeinthisemulatingcontrollerPCsoftwareCANNOT
representstheactual motion controller.
Click DriveSetting->CurrentLoop /Motion Test toopen thetestwindow.Then clickthe Motion Test
tabtoopentheemulatingcontroller.Editthetrapezoidvelocityprofileand clickthe Start buttonto
issuethemotion.
PowerSupplySelection
Toachievegooddrivingperformances,itisimportanttoselectsupplyvoltageand outputcurrent
properly.Generallyspeaking,supplyvoltagedeterminesthehighspeedperformanceofthemotor,
whileoutputcurrentdeterminestheoutputtorqueofthedrivenmotor(particularlyatlowerspeed).
Highersupplyvoltagewill allowhighermotorspeedtobeachieved,atthepriceofmorenoiseand
heating. Ifthemotionspeedrequirementislow,it sbettertouselowersupplyvoltagetodecrease
noise,heatingand improvereliability.
Regulatedor UnregulatedPower Supply
Bothregulatedandunregulatedpowersuppliescanbeusedtosupplythedrive.Ifregulatedpower
supplies(suchasmostswitchingsupplies.)areindeedused,itisimportanttohavelargecurrent

outputratingtoavoidproblemslikecurrentclamp,forexampleusing4Asupplyfor3Amotor-drive
operation.Ontheotherhand,ifunregulatedsupplyisused,onemayuseapowersupplyoflower
currentratingthan thatofmotor(typically50% 70%of motorcurrent).Thereasonisthatthedrive
drawscurrentfromthepowersupplycapacitoroftheunregulatedsupplyonlyduringtheON
durationofthePWMcycle,butnotduringtheOFF duration.Therefore,theaveragecurrent
withdrawnfrompowersupplyisconsiderablyless thanmotorcurrent.Forexample,two3Amotors
can bewell supplied byonepowersupplyof 4Arating.
MultipleDrives
Itisrecommendedtohavemultipledrivestoshareonepowersupplytoreducecost,ifthesupply
hasenoughcapacity.Toavoidcross interference,DONOTdaisy-chainthepowersupplyinputpinsof
thedrives. Instead,pleaseconnectthemto powersupplyseparately.
Selecting SupplyVoltage
Highersupplyvoltagecanincreasemotortorqueathigherspeeds,thushelpfulforavoidinglosing
steps. However,highervoltagemaycausebiggermotorvibrationatlowerspeed,anditmayalso
causeover-voltageprotectionorevendrivedamage.Therefore,itissuggestedtochooseonly
sufficientlyhighsupplyvoltageforintendedapplications,and itissuggestedtousepowersupplies
withtheoreticaloutputvoltageofdrivesminimum+10%todrivesmaximum –10%,leavingroom
forpowerfluctuation and back-EMF.

you encountertheproblemthatmotordoesnotrotatingorlosingsteps,checkwhetherornotthe
controllercanmaintain5V/24Voutput at anycurrent and pulsefrequency.
Ifthecablelengthisgreaterthan50cm,itisrecommendedtousetwistedshieldedpaircablefor
thesesignal.Donotputthecontrolsignalcabletogetherwiththecableswhichisusedforhigh

notbetiedup together.Itisbettertoseparatethembyatleast10 cm,otherwisethedisturbing
signalsgeneratedbymotorwilleasilydisturbpulsedirectionsignals, causingmotorposition
error,systeminstabilityand otherfailures.
lIfapowersupplyservesseveraldrives,separatelyconnectingthedrivesisrecommendedinstead
of daisy-chaining.
lItisprohibitedtopull and plugpowerconnectorwhilethedriveispoweredON,becausethereis
highcurrentflowingthroughmotorcoils(evenwhenmotorisatstandstill).Pullingorplugging
powerconnectorwithpoweronwill causeextremelyhighback-EMFvoltagesurge,whichmay
damagethedrive.

theHBSmonitorstheactualshaftpositionallthetime.Thecurrentoutputtedtothemotorchanges
dynamicallybased on thetrackingerrorbetween theactualposition and thecommanded position.
Lowholdingcurrentcanreducemotorheatinghoweveralsoreducestheholdingtorquewhichis
usedtolockthemotorshaftatstandstill.Itisrecommendedtodeterminetheholdingcurrentby
whetherornotthereisbigvibration atstart-up and howmuchlocktorqueisrequired,basedonyour
actualapplications.

Leadshinealreadyloadsdefaultcurrent-loopparametersand position-loopparameters. Those
defaultparametervalueshavebeenoptimized.Theyshouldbegoodenoughformostindustrial
applications,andthereisnoneedtotunethem.However,ifyouwanttofinetunetheIESforbest
performanceforyourapplications, Leadshinealso offerstuningsoftware,ProTuner,whichallowsyou
to adjustthosecurrent-loop and position-loopparameters(see softwaremanual).
Protection Functions
Toimprovereliability,theHBSincorporatessomebuilt-inprotectionfunctions. TheHBSusesonered
LEDtoindicatetheprotectiontype.Theperiodictimeofredis4s(seconds),andtheblinkingtimes
ofredLEDindicateswhatprotectionhasbeenactivated.Becauseonlyoneprotectioncanbe
displayedbyredLED,sothedrivewilldecidewhaterrortodisplayaccordingtotheirpriorities. See
