Read this first: Important safety information
This cha ter contains the safety information that you must be familiar with.
Before using this manual
CAUTION:
Before using this manual, be sure to read and understand all the related safety information for this
product. Refer to the information in this section and the safety information in the Safety and Warranty
Guide that you received with this product. Reading and understanding this safety information reduces
the risk of personal injury and damage to your product.
If you no longer have a co y of the Safety and Warranty Guide, you can obtain a Portable Document Format
(PDF) version from the Lenovo Su ort Web site at htt s://su ort.lenovo.com. The Lenovo Su ort Web site
also rovides the Safety and Warranty Guide and this User Guide in additional languages.
Service and upgrades
Do not attem t to service a roduct yourself unless instructed to do so by the Customer Su ort Center or
your documentation. Only use a Service Provider who is a roved to re air your articular roduct.
Note: Some com uter arts can be u graded or re laced by the customer. U grades ty ically are referred
to as o tions. Re lacement arts a roved for customer installation are referred to as Customer
Re laceable Units, or CRUs. Lenovo rovides documentation with instructions when it is a ro riate for
customers to install o tions or re lace CRUs. You must closely follow all instructions when installing or
re lacing arts. The Off state of a ower indicator does not necessarily mean that voltage levels inside a
roduct are zero. Before you remove the covers from a roduct equi ed with a ower cord, always ensure
that the ower is turned off and that the roduct is un lugged from any ower source. For more information
about CRUs, refer to Cha ter 7 “Hardware removal and installation” on age 43. If you have any questions or
concerns, contact the Customer Su ort Center.
Although there are no moving arts in your com uter after the ower cord has been disconnected, the
following warnings are required for your safety.
CAUTION:
Keep fingers and other parts of your body away from hazardous, moving parts. If you suffer an injury,
seek medical care immediately.
CAUTION:
Avoid contact with hot components inside the computer. During operation, some components
become hot enough to burn the skin. Before you open the computer cover, turn off the computer,
disconnect power, and wait approximately 10 minutes for the components to cool.
CAUTION:
After replacing a CRU, reinstall all protective covers, including the computer cover, before connecting
power and operating the computer. This action is important to help prevent unexpected electrical
shock and help ensure the containment of an unexpected fire that could happen under extremely rare
conditions.

When replacing CRUs, be cautious of sharp edges or corners that might cause injury. If you suffer an
injury, seek medical care immediately.
Static electricity prevention
Static electricity, although harmless to you, can seriously damage com uter com onents and o tions.
Im ro er handling of static-sensitive arts can damage the art. When you un ack an o tion or CRU, do not
o en the static- rotective ackage containing the art until the instructions direct you to install it.
When you handle o tions or CRUs, or erform any work inside the com uter, take the following recautions
to avoid static-electricity damage:
• Limit your movement. Movement can cause static electricity to build u around you.
• Always handle com onents carefully. Handle ada ters, memory modules, and other circuit boards by the
edges. Never touch ex osed circuitry.
• Prevent others from touching com onents.
• When you install a static-sensitive o tion or CRU, touch the static- rotective ackage containing the art
to a metal ex ansion-slot cover or other un ainted metal surface on the com uter for at least two
seconds. This reduces static electricity in the ackage and your body.
• When ossible, remove the static-sensitive art from the static- rotective ackaging and install the art
without setting it down. When this is not ossible, lace the static- rotective ackaging on a smooth, level
surface and lace the art on it.
• Do not lace the art on the com uter cover or other metal surface.
Power cords and power adapters
Use only the ower cords and ower ada ters su lied by the roduct manufacturer. Do not use the ac
ower cord for other devices.
The ower cords shall be safety a roved. For Germany, it shall be H05VV-F, 3G, 0.75 mm2, or better. For
other countries, the suitable ty es shall be used accordingly.
Never wra a ower cord around a ower ada ter or other object. Doing so can stress the cord in ways that
can cause the cord to fray, crack, or crim . This can resent a safety hazard.
Always route ower cords so that they will not be walked on, tri ed over, or inched by objects.
Protect ower cord and ower ada ters from liquids. For instance, do not leave your ower cord or ower
ada ter near sinks, tubs, toilets, or on floors that are cleaned with liquid cleansers. Liquids can cause a short
circuit, articularly if the ower cord or ower ada ter has been stressed by misuse. Liquids also can cause
gradual corrosion of ower cord terminals and/or the connector terminals on a ower ada ter, which can
eventually result in overheating.
Ensure that all ower cord connectors are securely and com letely lugged into rece tacles.
Do not use any ower ada ter that shows corrosion at the ac in ut ins or shows signs of overheating (such
as deformed lastic) at the ac in ut or anywhere on the ower ada ter.
Do not use any ower cords where the electrical contacts on either end show signs of corrosion or
overheating or where the ower cord a ears to have been damaged in any way.

Extension cords and related devices
Ensure that extension cords, surge rotectors, uninterru tible ower su lies, and ower stri s that you use
are rated to handle the electrical requirements of the roduct. Never overload these devices. If ower stri s
are used, the load should not exceed the ower stri in ut rating. Consult an electrician for more information
if you have questions about ower loads, ower requirements, and in ut ratings.
Plugs and outlets
If a rece tacle ( ower outlet) that you intend to use with your com uter equi ment a ears to be damaged
or corroded, do not use the outlet until it is re laced by a qualified electrician.
Do not bend or modify the lug. If the lug is damaged, contact the manufacturer to obtain a re lacement.
Do not share an electrical outlet with other home or commercial a liances that draw large amounts of
electricity. Otherwise, unstable voltage might damage your com uter, data, or connected devices.
Some roducts are equi ed with a three- ronged lug. This lug fits only into a grounded electrical outlet.
This is a safety feature. Do not defeat this safety feature by trying to insert it into a non-grounded outlet. If
you cannot insert the lug into the outlet, contact an electrician for an a roved outlet ada ter or to re lace
the outlet with one that enables this safety feature. Never overload an electrical outlet. The overall system
load should not exceed 80 ercent of the branch circuit rating. Consult an electrician for more information if
you have questions about ower loads and branch circuit ratings.
Be sure that the ower outlet you are using is ro erly wired, easily accessible, and located close to the
equi ment. Do not fully extend ower cords in a way that will stress the cords.
Be sure that the ower outlet rovides the correct voltage and current for the roduct you are installing.
Carefully connect and disconnect the equi ment from the electrical outlet.
External devices
Do not connect or disconnect any external device cables other than Universal Serial Bus (USB) cables while
the com uter ower is on; otherwise, you might damage your com uter. To avoid ossible damage to
connected devices, wait at least five seconds after the com uter is shut down to disconnect external
devices.
Heat and product ventilation
Com uters, ower ada ters, and many accessories can generate heat when turned on and when batteries
are charging. Always follow these basic recautions:
• Do not leave your com uter, ower ada ter, or accessories in contact with your la or any art of your
body for an extended eriod when the roducts are functioning or when the battery is charging. Your
com uter, ower ada ter, and many accessories roduce some heat during normal o eration. Extended
contact with the body could cause discomfort or, otentially, a skin burn.

• Do not charge the battery or o erate your com uter, ower ada ter, or accessories near flammable
materials or in ex losive environments.
• Ventilation slots, fans, and heat sinks are rovided with the roduct for safety, comfort, and reliable
o eration. These features might inadvertently become blocked by lacing the roduct on a bed, sofa,
car et, or other flexible surface. Never block, cover, or disable these features.
Ins ect your deskto com uter for dust accumulation at least once every three months. Before ins ecting
your com uter, turn off the ower and un lug the com uter's ower cord from the electrical outlet; then
remove any dust from vents and erforations in the bezel. If you notice external dust accumulation, then
examine and remove dust from the inside of the com uter including heat sink inlet fins, ower su ly vents,
and fans. Always turn off and un lug the com uter before o ening the cover. If ossible, avoid o erating
your com uter within two feet of high-traffic areas. If you must o erate your com uter in or near a high-traffic
area, ins ect and, if necessary, clean your com uter more frequently.
For your safety and to maintain o timum com uter erformance, always follow these basic recautions with
your deskto com uter:
• Kee the cover closed whenever the com uter is lugged in.
• Regularly ins ect the outside of the com uter for dust accumulation.
• Remove dust from vents and any erforations in the bezel. More frequent cleanings might be required for
com uters in dusty or high-traffic areas.
• Do not restrict or block any ventilation o enings.
• Do not store or o erate your com uter inside furniture, as this might increase the risk of overheating.
• Airflow tem eratures into the com uter should not exceed 35°C (95°F).
• Do not install air filtration devices. They may interfere with ro er cooling.
Computer placement notices
Ina ro riate com uter lacement might cause harm to children.
• Place the com uter on a sturdy iece of low-rise furniture or furniture that has been anchored.
• Do not lace the com uter at the edge of the furniture.
• Kee the com uter cables out of the reach of children.
• Some items, such as toys, might attract children. Kee such items away from the com uter.
Su ervise children in rooms where the above safety instructions cannot be fully im lemented.
Operating environment
The o timal environment in which to use your com uter is 10°C–35°C (50°F–95°F) with humidity ranging
between 35% and 80%. If your com uter is stored or trans orted in tem eratures less than 10°C (50°F),
allow the cold com uter to rise slowly to an o timal o erating tem erature of 10°C–35°C (50°F–95°F) before
use. This rocess could take two hours in extreme conditions. Failure to allow your com uter to rise to an
o timal o erating tem erature before use could result in irre arable damage to your com uter.
If ossible, lace your com uter in a well-ventilated and dry area without direct ex osure to sunshine.
Kee electrical a liances such as an electric fan, radio, high- owered s eakers, air conditioner, and
microwave oven away from your com uter because the strong magnetic fields generated by these
a liances can damage the monitor and data on the storage drive.

Do not lace any beverages on to of or beside the com uter or other connected devices. If liquid is s illed
on or in the com uter or a connected device, a short circuit or other damage might occur.
Do not eat or smoke over your keyboard. Particles that fall into your keyboard can cause damage.
Laser compliance statement
CAUTION:
When laser products (such as CD-ROMs, DVD drives, fiber optic devices, or transmitters) are
installed, note the following:
• Do not remove the covers. Removing the covers of the laser product could result in exposure to
hazardous laser radiation. There are no serviceable parts inside the device.
• Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified herein
might result in hazardous radiation exposure.
DANGER
Some laser products contain an embedded Class 3A or Class 3B laser diode. Note the following:
Laser radiation when open. Do not stare into the beam, do not view directly with optical
instruments, and avoid direct exposure to the beam.
Hazardous energy statement

Disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets before removing the computer cover or any part
that has the above label attached.
DO NOT disassemble com onents that have the above label attached. There are no serviceable arts inside
these com onents.
Your roduct is designed for safe use. However, hazardous voltage, current, and energy levels are resent
inside any com onent that has this label attached. Disassembling of these com onents might cause fire or
might even result in death. If you sus ect a roblem with one of these arts, contact a service technician.
Lithium coin-cell battery notice
DANGER
Danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced.

When re lacing the lithium coin-cell battery, use only the same ty e or equivalent ty e that is recommended
by the manufacturer. The battery contains lithium and can ex lode if not ro erly used, handled, or dis osed
of. Swallowing the lithium coin-cell battery will cause chocking or severe internal burns in just two hours and
might even result in death.
Kee batteries away from children. If the lithium coin-cell battery is swallowed or laced inside any art of
the body, seek medical care immediately.
Do not:
• Throw or immerse into water
• Heat to more than 100 °C (212°F).
• Re air or disassemble
• Leave in an extremely low air ressure environment
• Leave in an extremely high-tem erature environment
• Crush, uncture, cut, or incinerate
Dis ose of the battery as required by local ordinances or regulations.
The following statement a lies to users in the state of California, U.S.A.
California Perchlorate Information:
Products containing manganese dioxide lithium coin-cell batteries may contain erchlorate.

Using earphones, headphones, or a headset
• If your com uter has both a head hone connector and an audio line-out connector, always use the
head hone connector for ear hones, head hones, or a headset. However, the head hone connector
does not su ort the micro hone of the headset.
• If your com uter has both a headset connector and an audio line-out connector, always use the headset
connector for ear hones, head hones, or a headset.
CAUTION:
Excessive sound pressure from earphones and headphones can cause hearing loss. Adjustment of
the equalizer to maximum increases the earphone and headphone output voltage and the sound
pressure level. Therefore, to protect your hearing, adjust the equalizer to an appropriate level.
Excessive use of head hones or ear hones for a long eriod of time at high volume can be dangerous if the
out ut of the head hone or ear hone connectors do not com ly with s ecifications of EN 50332-2. The
head hone out ut connector of your com uter com lies with EN 50332-2 Sub clause 7. This s ecification
limits the com uter’s maximum wide band true RMS out ut voltage to 150 mV. To hel rotect against
hearing loss, ensure that the head hones or ear hones you use also com ly with EN 50332-2 (Clause 7
Limits) or a wide band characteristic voltage of 75 mV. Using head hones that do not com ly with EN 50332-
2 can be dangerous due to excessive sound ressure levels.
If your Lenovo com uter came with head hones or ear hones in the ackage, as a set, the combination of
the head hones or ear hones and the com uter already com lies with the s ecifications of EN 50332-1. If
different head hones or ear hones are used, ensure that they com ly with EN 50332-1 (Clause 6.5
Limitation Values). Using head hones that do not com ly with EN 50332-1 can be dangerous due to
excessive sound ressure levels.

Cleaning and maintenance
Kee your com uter and works ace clean. Shut down the com uter and then disconnect the ower cord
before cleaning the com uter. Do not s ray any liquid detergent directly on the com uter or use any
detergent containing flammable material to clean the com uter. S ray the detergent on a soft cloth and then
wi e the com uter surfaces.

This cha ter rovides basic information to hel you get familiar with your com uter.

This section rovides information about the locations of your com uter hardware.

1 Power indicator
When the ower indicator is on, the com uter is turned on.
2 Power button
Press the ower button to turn on your com uter. If your com uter is unres onsive, you can turn off the
com uter by ressing and holding the ower button for four or more seconds.
3 Storage drive status indicator
This indicator shows the status of the internal storage drives (such as hard disk drives or solid-state drives).
On: The storage drives are active and data is being transferred.
Off (when the com uter is owered on): No data is being transferred or the storage drives are not in use.
4 Microphone connector
Use this connector to attach a micro hone to your com uter when you want to record sound or if you use
s eech-recognition software.
5 Headset connector
Use this connector to attach a headset to your com uter.
6 Type-C USB 3.0 connector
Used to connect a USB-com atible device, such as a USB keyboard, mouse, scanner, rinter, or ersonal
digital assistant (PDA). For o timal data transfer, connect a USB 3.0 device to a USB 3.0 connector instead
of a USB 2.0 connector.
7 Always On USB 3.0 connector
Use this connector to attach a USB-com atible device, such as a USB keyboard, mouse, storage drive, or
rinter. With the ower cord connected, you can charge the connected USB device even when the com uter
is in hibernation mode or turned off.
8 Illuminated red dot
This indicator is on when the com uter is on.

2 Security-lock slot
Attach a Kensington-style cable lock to the security-lock slot to secure your com uter. For more information,

3 Wi-Fi antenna slot
Used to install the rear Wi-Fi antenna cable connector that is available only on some models. The rear Wi-Fi
antenna is installed on the rear Wi-Fi antenna cable connector.

Note: To o erate the com uter within Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Class B limits, use a

5 USB 3.1 connectors Gen 2 (2)
With greater data transfer rate and faster charging s eed, the USB 3.1 connector Gen 2 is used to connect
USB-com atible devices, such as a USB keyboard, a USB mouse, a USB storage device, or a USB rinter.
6 USB 3.0 connector
Use this connector to attach a USB-com atible device, such as a USB keyboard, mouse, storage drive, or
rinter.
Note: The USB 3.0 connector su orts the smart ower on feature that enables you to turn on the com uter
or wake it u from hibernation mode by ressing Alt+P on the keyboard. You can enable or disable the smart
ower on feature from the Setu Utility rogram.
7 HDMI-out connector
Used to send video and audio signals from your com uter to another audio or video device, such as a high
erformance monitor.
8 USB 3.0 connector
Use this connector to attach a USB-com atible device, such as a USB keyboard, mouse, storage drive, or
rinter.
9 DisplayPort connector
Use this connector to attach a high- erformance monitor, a direct-drive monitor, or other com atible
