ThischapterprovidesproductinformationabouttheThinkPadUSB3.0SecureHardDrive(hereaftercalled
thesecureharddrive).
Productdescription
Thesecureharddriveisaportable,light-weight,andhigh-speedUSB(UniversalSerialBus)3.0standard
optionthatoffershigh-leveldatasecurity.YoucantransferdatausingtheintegratedUSBcableonthe
secureharddriveortheprovidedUSB3.0Ycable.InadditiontoregularUSB3.0harddiskdrivefunctions,it
alsoprovidesyouwithaneasy-to-usefulldiskencryptionsolution.Allthefunctionsareintegratedintothe
secureharddrive;therefore,youcanaccessthesecureharddriveandmanagepasswordswithoutusing
othersoftwareapplications.
Thesecureharddrivehasthreeworkingmodes:standbymode,administratormode,andusermode.For
moreinformationabouttheworkingmodes,refertoChapter3“Usingthesecureharddrive”onpage5.
Note:Passwordsarerequiredforadministratormodeandusermode.Accordingly,theyarecalledthe

Beforeyoubegin
Besuretocarefullyreadthefollowinginformationbeforeinstallingandusingthesecureharddrive.
Attention:
•MakesurethatyouusetheintegratedUSBcableonthesecureharddriveortheprovidedUSB3.0
Ycabletoinstallthesecureharddrive.Usinganycablesotherthanthetwocablesmightdamage
thesecureharddrive.
•Carefullyhandlethesecureharddrive.Whenthesecureharddriveisnotinuseoryouneedtoshipittoa
differentlocation,placeitintheprovidedcarryingcase.
•Togetreliableperformanceofthesecureharddrive,makesurethattheintegratedUSBcableonthe
secureharddriveortheprovidedUSB3.0YcableisconnectedtotheUSBconnectorsonyourcomputer
ortoanac-poweredUSBhub.Donotconnectthetwocablestoanon-ac-poweredUSBhub.
Installingthesecureharddrive
Toinstallthesecureharddrive,dooneofthefollowing:
•ConnecttheintegratedUSBcableonthesecureharddrivetoaUSB2.0orUSB3.0connectoronyour
computer.Whentheconnectionisestablished,thestatusLEDturnsred.

•ConnecttheUSBreceptacleconnectoroftheUSB3.0YcabletotheintegratedUSBcableonthe
secureharddrive,andthenconnectthetwoUSBconnectorsattheotherendoftheUSB3.0Ycable
totwoUSB2.0orUSB3.0connectorsonyourcomputer.Whentheconnectionisestablished,the
statusLEDturnsred.

Thischapterprovidesinformationabouthowtousethesecureharddrive.
Enteringandexitingtheworkingmodes
Thissectionprovidesinformationabouthowtoenterandexitstandbymode,administratormode,anduser
modeofthesecureharddrive.
Enteringstandbymode
Standbymodeisthedefaultworkingmodeofthesecureharddrive.Inthismode,thesecureharddrive
islocked;therefore,itcannotberecognizedbytheoperatingsystem.However,standbymodeenables
youtoenterandswitchbetweenadministratormodeandusermode.
Toenterstandbymode,connectthesecureharddrivetoyourcomputer.WhenthestatusLEDturnsred,it
indicatesthatthesecureharddrivegoesintostandbymode.Formoreinformationabouthowtoconnectthe
secureharddrive,referto“Installingthesecureharddrive”onpage3.
Note:Toswitchbetweenadministratormodeandusermode,youarerequiredtorstlyswitchtostandby
mode,andthenyoucanenteryourdesiredmode.
Enteringadministratormode
Inadministratormode,youcanchangetheadministratorpassword,createupto10userpasswords,delete
alluserpasswords,andsettheauto-lockfunction.Formoreinformation,see“Passwordmanagement”on
page6and“Lockthesecureharddrivewiththeauto-lockfunction”onpage8.Thesecureharddriveis
lockedinthismode;therefore,itcannotberecognizedbytheoperatingsystem.
Toenteradministratormode,dothefollowing:
1.Connectthesecureharddrivetoyourcomputer.WhenthestatusLEDturnsred,itindicatesthatthe
secureharddrivegoesintostandbymode.Formoreinformationabouthowtoconnectthesecurehard
drive,referto“Installingthesecureharddrive”onpage3.
2.Hold+0forvesecondsuntilthestatusLEDashesinred.Thisindicatesthatyoucaninputthe
administratorpassword.
3.Inputtheadministratorpasswordandpresstoenteradministratormode.Thedefaultadministrator
passwordis12345678.WhenthestatusLEDturnsblue,itindicatesthatthesecureharddrivegoes
intoadministratormode.
Note:IfthestatusLEDashesinredforafewsecondsafteryouinputtheadministratorpassword,it
indicatesthatthesecureharddrivehasreturnedtostandbymode.Youneedtogobacktostep2to
enteradministratormodeagain.Thisproblemiscausedbyoneofthefollowingreasons:
•Anincorrectadministratorpasswordisinputinstep3.
•Noactivityisdetectedwithintwominutesinadministratormode.
Exitingadministratormode
Toexitadministratormode,holduntilthestatusLEDturnsred.Thesecureharddrivegoesintostandby
mode.

Enteringusermode
Inusermode,youcanaccessthesecureharddriveandchangethecurrentuserpassword.Thesecurehard
driveisunlockedinthismode;therefore,youcanuseittotransferdata.
Toenterusermode,dothefollowing:
1.Connectthesecureharddrivetoyourcomputer.WhenthestatusLEDturnsred,itindicatesthatthe
secureharddrivegoesintostandbymode.Formoreinformationabouthowtoconnectthesecurehard
drive,referto“Installingthesecureharddrive”onpage3.
2.Inputtheuserpasswordortheadministratorpassword,andthenpress.WhenthestatusLEDturns
green,itindicatesthatthesecureharddrivegoesintousermode.IfthestatusLEDashesinred,this
indicatesthatanincorrectpasswordisinput.Youcanchooseeithertoinputagainortoresetyour
secureharddrive.Formoreinstructionsaboutresettingyoursecureharddrive,see“Completely
resettingthesecureharddrive”onpage9.
Notes:
•Ifyouincorrectlyinputtheuserpasswordortheadministratorpasswordsixconsecutivetimes,thesecure
harddrivewillnolongerrespondandthestatusLEDwillturnoff.Youneedtodisconnectthesecurehard
drive,andthenreconnectittoyourcomputerforadditionalpasswordattempts.
•Ifyouincorrectlyinputtheuserpasswordortheadministratorpassword25consecutivetimes,the
secureharddrivewillbelockedandthestatusLEDwillquicklyashinred.Tounlockthesecurehard
drive,dothefollowing:
1.Disconnectthesecureharddrivefromyourcomputer.
2.Hold5whilereconnectingthesecureharddrivetoyourcomputer.ThestatusLEDalternately
ashesinredandingreen.
3.Press5278879.ThestatusLEDturnsred,indicatingthatthesecureharddriveisunlockedfor
additionalpasswordattempts.
•Ifyouincorrectlyinputtheuserpasswordortheadministratorpassword50consecutivetimes,thesecure
harddrivewillbelockedandthestatusLEDwillquicklyashinred.Thesecureharddrivehastobe
completelyresetandthenformatted.Formoreinformation,see“Completelyresettingthesecurehard
drive”onpage9and“Initializingandformattingthesecureharddriveafteracompletereset”onpage9.
Exitingusermode
Attention:Besuretosavealldocumentsonthesecureharddrivebeforeexitingusermode.
Toexitusermode,dooneofthefollowing:
•HolduntilthestatusLEDturnsred.
•ClicktheSafelyRemoveHardwareiconinthenoticationareaonyourcomputerscreen.Amessagewill
bedisplayed,promptingyouthatyoucansafelydisconnectthesecureharddrivefromyourcomputer.
Then,dependingonyouroperatingsystem,thestatusLEDstaysingreenorturnsred.Youcanchoose
whethertodisconnectthesecureharddriveornot.
Note:Itisnotrecommendedtoexitusermodewhenthesecureharddriveistransferringdata.
Passwordmanagement
Thissectionprovidesinformationaboutmanagingyouradministratorpasswordanduserpassword.
Changingtheadministratorpassword
Tochangetheadministratorpassword,dothefollowing:

Deletingtheuserpassword(s)
Todeletetheuserpassword(s),dothefollowing:
1.Enteradministratormode.See“Enteringadministratormode”onpage5formoreinformation.
2.Hold7+8+forvesecondsuntilthestatusLEDashesinblue.Afterthat,thestatusLEDashes
ingreenthreetimes,andthenashesinblue.
3.Hold7+8+forvesecondsagainuntilthestatusLEDbecomesgreenforthreesecondsandthen
turnsblue.Thisindicatesthattheuserpassword(s)aresuccessfullydeleted.
Attention:Ifyouhavemorethanoneuserpassword,alluserpasswordswillbedeletedatatime.
Lockthesecureharddrive
Toensurethedatasecurityofyoursecureharddrivewhenyouareawayfromyourcomputer,youcan
manuallylockthesecureharddriveorusetheauto-lockfunction.
Manuallylockthesecureharddrive
Tomanuallylockthesecureharddrive,holduntilthestatusLEDturnsred.
Lockthesecureharddrivewiththeauto-lockfunction
Ifthereisnodatatransmissionafteranauto-lockinterval,whichyouneedtosetinadvance,thesecurehard
drivewilllockitself.Then,thestatusLEDwillturnred,andyouwillnotbeabletoaccessthesecurehard
driveunlessyouunlockitbyinputtingthecorrectuserpasswordandthenpress.
Tosettheauto-lockinterval,dothefollowing:
1.Enteradministratormode.See“Enteringadministratormode”onpage5formoreinformation.

2.Hold+6untilthestatusLEDalternatelyashesinredandinblue.
3.Settheauto-lockintervalbypressingthefollowingnumerickeys:
•0:Ifyoupressthisnumerickey,theauto-lockfunctionwillbedisabled.
•1:Ifyoupressthisnumerickey,theauto-lockintervalwillbeveminutes.
•2:Ifyoupressthisnumerickey,theauto-lockintervalwillbe10minutes.
•3:Ifyoupressthisnumerickey,theauto-lockintervalwillbe20minutes.
Note:Bydefault,theauto-lockfunctionisdisabled.
Note:Besuretosavealldocumentsonthesecureharddrivebeforethesecureharddrivelocksitself.If
anydocumentisnotsavedbeforethesecureharddrivelocksitself,amessageboxwillbedisplayed,
remindingyouthatthedocumentdirectorycannotbefound.Youneedtounlockthesecureharddrive
tosavethedocument.
Hibernating,suspending,orloggingofffromtheoperatingsystem
Beforehibernating,suspending,orloggingofffromtheoperatingsystem,dothefollowing:
1.Saveandcloseallthelesonthesecureharddrive.
2.ClicktheSafelyRemoveHardwareiconinthenoticationareaonyourcomputerscreen.Then,a
messageisdisplayed,promptingyouthatyoucansafelydisconnectthesecureharddrivefromyour
computer.Youcanchoosewhethertodisconnectthesecureharddriveornot.
Note:Toensurethedataintegrityofyoursecureharddrive,besuretolockordisconnectyoursecurehard
driveifyouareawayfromyourcomputeroryouaresharingyourcomputerwithothersusingdifferent
Windows®useraccounts.
Completelyresettingthesecureharddrive
Ifyouforgetalluserpasswordsortheadministratorpassword,youcanperformacompleteresettodelete
alluserpasswords,andrestoretheadministratorpasswordto12345678.
Attention:Completelyresettingthesecureharddrivewilleraseallthedataonthesecureharddrive.
Youneedtoinitializeandformatthesecureharddrivewiththediskmanagementapplication.Formore
information,see“Initializingandformattingthesecureharddriveafteracompletereset”onpage9.
Tocompletelyresetthesecureharddrive,dothefollowing:
1.Holdwhileyouconnectthesecureharddrivetoyourcomputer.ThestatusLEDalternatelyashes
inblueandinred.
Note:Ifnoactivityisdetectedfor30secondsinthisstep,thesecureharddrivewillgointostandby
mode.
2.Hold++2for10secondsuntilthestatusLEDturnsgreenforthreeseconds.Thecompletereset
nishes.
3.Disconnectthesecureharddrivefromyourcomputer.
Initializingandformattingthesecureharddriveafteracompletereset
Acompleteresetofthesecureharddrivewilleraseallinformationandpartitionsettingsonthesecurehard
drive.Youneedtoinitializeandformatthesecureharddriveafteracompletereset.

Attention:ItisnotrecommendedtoinitializeandformatthesecureharddriveonaMicrosoft®WindowsXP
operatingsystembecausethismightdecreasethewritingspeedofthesecureharddrive.
Toinitializeandformatthesecureharddrive,dothefollowing:
1.Afteracompletereset,connectthesecureharddrivetoyourcomputer.
2.Inputthedefaultuserpassword12345678,andthenpresstoenterusermode.Theoperatingsystem
automaticallyinstallsalltheUSBdevicedriversforthesecureharddrive.
3.DependingonyourStartmode,clickStartandthenright-clickMyComputerorComputer.Select
Manage,andtheComputerManagementwindowopens.
4.IntheComputerManagementwindow,clickDiskManagement.TheDiskManagementwindowopens,
andthesecureharddriveisrecognizedasanunknowndevicethatisuninitializedandunallocated.
5.Dooneofthefollowingtomakethesecureharddriverecognized:
•IftheInitializeandConvertDiskWizardwindowopens,clickNext➙Next➙Finish.
•IftheInitializeandConvertDiskWizardwindowdoesnotopen,dothefollowing:
a.Right-clickUnknownDisk,andthenselectInitializeDisk.
b.IntheInitializeDiskwindow,clickOK.
6.Right-clickyourmouseintheblankareaoftheunallocateddevicesection,andthenselectNew
Partition.TheWelcometotheNewPartitionWizardwindowopens.
7.ClickNext➙Next➙Next.
8.InputanameforthevolumelabelandselectPerformaquickformat.Then,clickNext.
9.ClickFinish.Waituntiltheformatprocesscompletes.Thesecureharddrivewillberecognizedandit
willbereadyforuse.

ReplaceableUnit”or“CRU.”Ifso,theServiceProviderwillshiptheCRUtoyouforyoutoinstall.
Ifyourproblemcannotberesolvedoverthetelephone;throughtheapplicationofsoftwareupdatesor
theinstallationofaCRU,theServiceProviderwillarrangeforserviceunderthetypeofwarrantyservice

ReplacementProductsandParts
Whenwarrantyserviceinvolvesthereplacementofaproductorpart,thereplacedproductorpartbecomes
Lenovo’spropertyandthereplacementproductorpartbecomesyourproperty.OnlyunalteredLenovo
productsandpartsareeligibleforreplacement.ThereplacementproductorpartprovidedbyLenovomay
notbenew,butitwillbeingoodworkingorderandatleastfunctionallyequivalenttotheoriginalproductor
