Congratulations on your purchase of the classic Lionel Boy’s Set. Originally
planned for production in the 1950’s, this
pastel-colored set had to wait until now to
go into full production. The Boy’s Set
features a blue 2-6-4 steam locomotive, a
boxcar, hopper, gondola, and caboose with
interior illumination. Enjoy this unique
train set!

3Move ‘em out!
•Get your Boy’s Set moving. Press the DIR/direction control button on your
CAB-1 remote or Lionel transformer. This sequences the Lionel reverse unit to the
next operating state.
•Adjust track voltage until your Boy’s Set moves at your desired
speed. To increase speed, increase track voltage. To decrease speed, reduce
voltage. To stop the locomotive, turn-off track power.
•See page 5 for information on locking your Boy’s Set in a single
operating state.
Place your Boy’s Set on Lionel or Lionel-compatible
O gauge track.
• Attach the drawbar as illustrated in Figure 1 below.

2Power up your Boy’s Set locomotive with your transformer.
•Your Boy’s Set locomotive is designed to operate on 8-18 volts
alternating current. Virtually all Lionel and Lionel-compatible alternating-
current transformers are suitable.
•Do not power your Boy’s Set locomotive with direct current (DC).
Damage to sensitive electronic components may occur.
To prevent damage to the smoke unit, be sure to add 4-8 drops of
smoke fluid to your locomotive’s stack before you power it up.

To select a single operational state for your Lionel Boy’s Set locomotive
(example: forward only), you can deactivate
the reverse unit’s sequencing function with
the reverse unit control switch.
Get your locomotive moving in the
desired direction, then slow it down
without stopping. Set the reverse unit
control switch toward the rear of the
locomotive. Refer to Figure 2 for the
location of the switch. The Boy’s Set
locomotive is now “locked” into your
chosen direction.
When you no longer want single-
direction operation, just slide the reverse
unit control switch back toward the front of
the locomotive.
Your locomotive’s reverse unit will
“reset” to forward after any five
second or longer power
interruption, regardless of the
original locked-out direction.

Enhancing tractive effort with Traction Tires
Your locomotive is equipped with a Traction Tire. This means that one of the
drive wheels is fitted with a rubber traction
tire to enhance tractive effort so your
locomotive can pull many cars at once.
Lionel locomotives with Traction Tires grip the
track, enabling them to pull heavy loads at
higher speeds.
Replacement Traction Tires are available at
your authorized Lionel Service Center. Simply
remove the drive rod nut from the wheel, slip
off the old Traction Tire, and position the new
one. Replace the drive rod nut, and you are
ready to haul your long freight back to the
yard.

Your tender is equipped with an oper- ating, realistic whistle. To activate the
whistle sounds when operating your loco-
motive with conventional transformers that
lack a whistle/horn control button, you’ll
need to install a Lionel no. 610-5906-001
Sound Activation Button (available
separately). Connect the button as shown in
Figure 3 below.
All track power must feed through
the Sound Activation Button. Do
not bypass the button.

Coupling your locomotive and rolling stock
When coupling your cars, at least one of the mating couplers must be open as
shown in Figure 4. Simply press down on the
lock release to open the coupler, then push the
cars toward each other until they lock together.
Keep in mind that it’s easier to couple cars on a straight stretch of track.

Lubricating your locomotive
Help your locomotive lead a long and productive life on your railroad by
maintaining it properly.
We recommend that you purchase a
Lionel Lubrication and Maintenance Kit
(no. 6-62927), available from your Lionel
dealer. Two basic rules to keep in mind:
never over-lubricate (a small amount will
do) and avoid getting grease or oil on the
locomotive’s wheels, contact rollers, or your
track.
You’ll know your locomotive requires
lubrication when visual inspection reveals
dryness on the parts indicated in Figure 5.
Remove accumulated dirt and dust before
lubricating, and always lubricate any
locomotive emerging from prolonged
storage.

Adding smoke fluid to your locomotive’s smoke generator
Your locomotive is equipped with a smoke generator that produces safe, clean,
white smoke during operation.
The smoke generator requires the periodic
addition of Lionel smoke fluid in order to
function. A small tube of smoke fluid was
included with this set. Pierce the smoke fluid
tube end with a pin, then add 4 to 8 drops of
fluid directly into the locomotive’s stack.
Smoke production commences momentarily,
faster if you run your locomotive at high
speed. When smoke production wanes, add
more fluid (4 to 8 drops). An idle locomotive
will not smoke.
Smoke production is greater at higher
voltages and when the locomotive is pulling
a heavy load or a long consist.
Caution! Always keep a small amount of smoke fluid in the locomotive’s smoke
generator; the generator’s element can become damaged if operated without
smoke fluid. This is particularly true if your locomotive sits in neutral for an
extended period of time without smoke fluid in the generator.

During the course of normal operation, the lamp in your locomotive’s
headlight may require replacement.
Replacing this lamp requires the removal of
the boiler, partial disassembly of the drive
gear, and the soldering or splicing of two
wires. The replacement lamp is part no.
600-8516-009. We recommend that you
have the replacement done at your
authorized Lionel Service Center. Refer to
the Service Station list that is included with
this set.
