Functional Description
LK 160 SmartBio is an electronic differential temperature controller for
energy efficiency in heating systems with storage tanks. It has seven
preset hydraulic systems for different installations. The selected hydrau-
lic system and operating status is shown on the backlit colour display.
Controls and settings are easily carried out using the rotary encoder and
the esc-button. SmartBio can control an additional heat source such as
immersion heaters or other heat sources. This control function has an
adjustable start delay which additionally increases the efficiency of the
heating system.
Wiring
Temperature sensors type Pt1000 must be used. Each temperature
sensorhastwoconnectorswhichareequivalent,i.e.interchangeable.
Thus, polarity reversal is not an issue. The sensor cables can be
extended up to 100 meters. To this effect, a cable cross section of 2 x
1,5 mm² is recommended.
SmartBio must not be used alone as a thermostat for immersion
heaters or burners. It must be connected through existing boiler and
overheating thermostats.

Operation
The entire set-up and operation of the SmartBio are effected via two
control knobs on the controller front. All settings and interrogations
are effected via the rotary encoder. To nd a required menu item, turn
the rotary encoder to “scroll” through the menu – the selectable op-
tion appears on a coloured background on the display. To conrm the

For indication of the operating mode and for communication
during set-up, messages, modication and evaluation, the
SmartBio is equipped with a coloured full graphics display
which is permanently backlit. The brightness of the backlight-
ing can be adjusted in steps of 5% from 10% to 100%. After a
preset time (30 - 255 sec) backlighting is dimmed.

Warning
High-efficiency pump
A high-efciency pump can be connected to RO1 or/and
RO2. The appropriate control signal is issued at TS4. The
control signal may be an analog voltage 0 – 10 V or a PWM-
signal. For further details, please refer to the pump speci-
cation. For denition and settings, the commissioning under
0.7 Checklist has been provided.

Additional heat source with delay function (DRD)
Function in Hydraulic systems 1.1, 1.2, 2.1 and 2.2.
SmartBio can activate immersion heaters or other heat sources
if the temperature in a tank falls below the set value. To avoid
unnecessary starts the additional heat source has an adjustable
delay function. The delay can be set between 0 and 100 degree
minutes. With the setting 0 the additional heat source will start
as soon the temperature is below set value. With the setting 50
it starts with a delay as follows. If the temperature falls 10°C it
starts after 5 minutes (10°C x 5 min = 50 degree minutes). With
the setting 100 the additional heat starts as follows. If the tem-
perature falls 10°C it starts after 10 minutes (10°C x 10 min = 100
degree minutes). If the temperature falls 5°C it starts after 20 min-
utes (5°C x 20 min = 100) etc.

Hydraulic system 1.1 –
Primary heat source/tank and Secondary tank
Hydraulic system 1.1 is intended for heating systems with a primary
heat source/tank and a secondary tank. Heating water and domestic
hot water are taken from the primary heat source. SmartBio controls
the charge and return pumps. When the primary heat source has
reached the set temperature BT, charge pump RO1 starts transferring
energy to the secondary tank. When the temperature TS1 in the pri-
mary heat source drops, return pump RO2 starts transferring energy
back to the primary heat source. This will continue as long as there is
more energy in the secondary tank.
If the temperature TS1 in the primary heat source drops below the set
temperature RA, the additional heat source starts with selected delay.
Normally charge pump RO1 is not activated at this point. However
the pump can be activated in commissioning. The additional heat
source is activated until the set temperature RO has been reached.
The pumps and the ThermoBac DB check valve are mounted in
the return-pipe between primary heat source and secondary tank.
The check valve which prevents self-circulation in both directions is
mounted between the pumps. The fat arrow must point to the pri-
mary heat source.
Sensor TS1 is mounted in a sensor pocket in the upper part of the
primary heat source. Sensor TS2 is mounted in a sensor housing in
the upper part of the secondary tank.
Sensor TS3 is mounted in the lower part of the secondary tank.
N.B! The sensors must not be placed on the supply pipe as this might
disturb the function.

ate submenu is called up or the selection is activated. Press the ESC–
button to make the menu return by one level. If no input is made
within the preset time, the controller will automatically return to the
hydraulic system.

Hydraulic system 2.1 – Main storage tank and
secondary tank
Hydraulic system 2.1 is intended for storage tank installations in
which heat is to be transferred from a main tank to a secondary
tank. Heating water and domestic hot water are taken from the se-
condary tank. By measuring the temperature difference between
the tanks SmartBio controls the charge pump. SmartBio starts
charge pump RO1 when TS1 has reached the set temperature MT
and TS2 is below the set temperature ST + RAO. The pump stops
when TS3 has reached the set temperature SB, TS2 is higher than
TS1 or TS1 is below MT.
If the temperature TS2 in the secondary tank sinks below ST, the
additional heat source starts with selected delay. If charge pump
RO1 is to run at this point the function is assigned in commissio-
ning. The additional heat is activated until the temperature TS2 has
reached the temperature ST + RAO.
Sensor TS1 is mounted in a sensor pocket in the upper part of the
main tank. Sensor TS2 is mounted in a sensor housing in the upper
part of the secondary tank.
Sensor TS3 is mounted in the lower part of the secondary tank.
N.B! The sensors must not be placed on the supply pipe as this
might disturb the function.
Hydraulic system 2.2 - Main storage tank and
secondary tank with thermic valve
The basic functions are the same as in hydraulic system 2.1 but
to avoid high temperatures in plastic pipes a LK 820 ThermoVar
thermic valve is to be installed between the tanks. ThermoVar ther-
mic valves are available with different limit temperatures.

Hydraulic system 1.2 – Solid fuel boiler with
thermic valve and storage tank
Hydraulic system 1.2 is intended for solid fuel boilers with a stor-
age tank and a LK 824 ThermoVar thermic valve with double-
acting check valve function. ThermoVar thermic valve ensures a
high return temperature to the solid fuel boiler, thus increasing the
efciency of the system. Basic functions as in hydraulic system 1.1.
The pumps and the ThermoVar thermic valve are mounted be-
tween boiler and tank according to the valve instruction.

Circulator
Hydraulic system 4 – Main storage tank and
domestic hot water tank
Hydraulic system 4 gives priority to heat in the upper part of the
main tank. This enables a fast transfer of heat to the domestic hot
water tank. SmartBio controls the charge pump to the domestic hot
water tank, the zone valve of the main tank and the circulator in
the heating loop. Charge pump RO2 will start when the tempera-
ture TS1 has exceeded temperature TS2 by the charge difference
CD and temperature TS2 has fallen by the domestic water hystere-
sis DH below the set temperature DW. Charge pump RO2 will not
be turned off until TS2 has reached DW or TS1 has fallen by charge
hysteresis CH below TS2. When TS1 has fallen by 2°C below set
temperature SP, circulator RELstops, zone valve RO1 opens. When
TS1 has reached SP, the circulator starts, the zone valve closes and
the entire water volume of the main tank is used.
Sensor TS1 is mounted in a sensor pocket in the upper part of the
main tank. Sensor TS2 is mounted in a sensor housing in the domestic
hot water tank.
Sensor TS3 is mounted in an optional place. It is only used for
temperature display.
N.B! The sensors must not be placed on the supply pipe as this
might disturb the function.

Hydraulic system 3.1 – Heat source and storage tank
Hydraulic system 3.1 is for heating installations where the heat
is transferred from a heat source to a storage tank. When the
temperature TS2 has fallen below the set value ST, SmartBio
will activate the heat source REL. Once temperature TS1 has
reached the set value BT and TS1 is above TS2, charge pump
RO1 will start.
When TS3 has reached the set value SB, the heat source will be
deactivated and the pump will stop after the delay PO.
The pump will also stop if TS2 is above TS1 or TS1 has fallen by
hysteresis CH below BT. To reduce the amount of burner starts,
the restart delay CRD can be set.
Sensor TS1 is mounted in a sensor pocket in the upper part of
the heat source. Sensor TS2 is mounted in a sensor housing in
the upper part of the storage tank. Sensor TS3 is mounted in the
lower part of the storage tank.
N.B! The sensors must not be placed on the supply pipe as
this might disturb the function.
Hydraulic system 3.2 – Solid fuel heating boiler
with loading unit and storage tank
LK 810 ThermoMat loading unit ensures a high return tem-
perature to the solid fuel boiler which increases the efciency
of the system. Tarring and condensation are prevented which
prolongs boiler life. Basic functions as in hydraulic system 3.1.

1.1.1 Measured
val… The sensor temperatures, pump speeds and status
of the connected additional heat source are shown.
Press ESC. Select Service hours. Press OK.
1.1.2 Service hours The operating time of the activated plant components
is displayed in hours. By actuating Reset all counters
are reset to zero. The values are saved once per day,
so that one day max. is lost in case of failure in power
supply. Press ESC.Select Error list. Press OK.
1.1.5 Error list A list of any faults that may have occured appears. Se-
lect a fault. Press OK.
1.10 Error list The error message appears in plain text. If
necessary take the appropriate measures. Back to
1Main menu by pressing ESC three times. Select
Settings. Press OK.
1.2 Settings After a power failure Date/Time has a memory
of 8 hours. Select Date/Time to set date and time.
Press OK.
1.2.1 Date setting Press OK. The year is highlighted in colour.
Select year by turning the rotary encoder. Press OK.
The month is marked. Select month. Press OK.
Select date. Press OK.
Scroll to Time. Set time. Press OK.
Select Auto. Clock Change for automatic summer

1.2.2 Language To change over to another language select
Language. Change the language. Press OK. Press
ESC. Select Display. Press OK.
1.2.7 Display Brightness serves to adjust the backlighting of the
display in steps of 5% from 10% to 100%. Blanking
time is used to determine the time after which, in case
of inactivity, backlighting is reduced from the set value
to 10%. Adjustable in the range from 30 to 255 sec-
onds. Mirror system. When needed the system can be
mirrored. Press ESC. Select Buzzer. Press ESC.
1.2.10 Buzzer When activated, a warning signal sounds when an
error has occurred and/or before an additional heat
source (recharge warning) is activated. The recharge
warning buzzer sound can be switched off by press-
ing the ESC button. The recharge warning buzzer only
works if Activation is selected. Press OK.
1.2 Settings If an SD-card has been installed, select Remove SD
card safely to remove it. Press OK. Remove SD-card.
To save the settings from the SD-card, press Save
parameters. Successfully saved is shown. The saved
le can also be read in menu 0.2 Commissioning.
Here set values can be replaced by the factory
settings. Activate factory settings? appears.Yes
or No. Press ESC twice.
System 1.1, 1.2 and 4:
Select Monitoring. Press OK. Press Error list.
System 2.1, 2.2, 3.1 and 3.2:
Select Basic functions. Press OK. The thermostat
function can be activated or deactivated. Press ESC
three times.
Select Monitoring. Press OK. Press Error list.
1.1.5 Error list If an error is indicated, check the error by pressing
OK. The error is shown in plain text. Press ESC three
times. Select Login. Press OK.
1.7 Login Here the installer can enter his/her login code
to perform further settings and changes. Select
About SmartBio.Press ESC.
1.9 About The software and hardware version of the control-
ler, the serial number and the date of original com-
missioning appear.
If no entry is made within the preset time or by
pressing ESC twice, the display will return to the
current hydraulic system.
Operation Mode
On the controller the user can make various settings and obtain in-
formation about states and processes. To this effect press OK in au-
tomatic mode. 1 Main menu appears. Select Evaluation. Press OK.

Commissioning
For commissioning, the controller must be mounted correctly. All
inputs and outputs must be connected and ready for operation.
The strain relief device must be used and the terminal cover closed!
Commissioning is communicated in plain text. The user must make
a selection, conrm and – if applicable – jump to the next menu item.
√ indicates function activated.
Now the power supply of the controller must be switched on.
After a short booting sequence 0.1 Language will appear on the dis-
play.
0.1 Language Select language. Press OK. Scroll to Next. Press OK.
0.2 Time/Date Press OK. The year is highlighted in colour. Select year by
turning the rotary encoder. Press OK.
The month is marked. Select month. Press OK.
Select date. Press OK.
Scroll to Time. Set time. Press OK.
Automatic summer time is predefined. To deactivate press
OK.
Load from SD card is shown only when SD card is in-
stalled. Press Load from SD card to read the saved le. The
le name is MMDDttmm. LKS (month, day, hour, min-
ute). Press desired le to load saved settings. The settings
are saved in menu 1.2.An SD card 2 GB is recommended.
Scroll to Next. Press OK.
System 1.1 The controller shows the hydraulic system 1.1.
Select hydraulic system 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2 or 4 by
turning the encoder. Press OK.
0.7 Checklist Test outputs. Press OK.
0.7.1 Test outputs The outputs can be activated manually to test the
function of the connected unit. Activate by pressing
OK and turning to ON. Press Next.
0.7 Checklist Select Mirror system. When needed the system can be
mirrored. Press OK.
Set the desired Loading temp. (BT). (System 1.1 and 1.2)
Select Additional heat. Press OK.
Select energy type of the additional heat source, Electric,
Oil, Gas, Pellet or - - -. Press OK. Choose if charge pump
and/or return pump are to be blocked when additional
heat is active. Set Block chargepump to Yes or No (System
1.1, 1.2, 2.1 and 2.2). Set Block returnpump to Yes or No
(System 1.1 and 1.2).
Select Tank bot. Sensor. Mark checkbox if sensor is in-
stalled in tank bottom.
Select HE output. Press OK. In hydraulic systems 1.1 and
1.2 it is possible to connect two pumps controlled by a
PWM-signal when RO1 and RO2 are not activated at the
same time. If a high-efciency pump is installed, select
RO1, RO2 or RO1/RO2. Press OK.
Select HE type. Press OK. Select signal PWM or Analog.
Press Next.
0.9 End You have completed commissioning!.Press OK.
System Operation mode. From this point on the SmartBio con-
trols the thermal plant automatically. The screen displays
the hydraulic system, the date, the time, the activated
pump and the current temperature for each sensor.
Note! Check the display regularly to be able to elimi-
nate any malfunctions!

Professional Mode
Important! In professional mode, seings are made which require
detailed knowledge of the heating and solar plant. If a single pa-
rameter is changed, this may affect the safety, functions and ef-
ficiency of the entire plant!

Select Charge Hyst. (CH) and set the hysteresis for
pump RO1 to stop. The pump RO1 stops when TS1
< BT-CH. The pump will start again when TS1 > BT
Select Charge Diff. (CD). Set the temperature differ-
ence when pump RO1 is to stop.
The pump RO1 stops when TS2 > TS1+CD. The
pump will start again when TS1 > TS2.
Select Return Diff. (RD). Set the temperature differ-
ence when return pump RO2 is to start. Pump RO2
starts when TS2 ≥ TS1+RD
Select Return Hyst. (RH). Set the hysteresis for re-
turn pump RO2 to stop.
Pump RO2 stops when TS2 ≤ TS1+RD-RH
Select Add. Heat warn.(RW). Set the temperature at
which the buzzer shall warn before the additional

Select Pump restart delay. Select start delay for
the two pumps.

Select Boiler temp (BT). Set the start temperature
for pump RO1.
Select Tank 2 top (ST). Set temperature ST when the
heat source is to be activated.
Select Tank 2 bot. (SB). Set temperature SB when the
heat source and pump RO1 are to be deactivated.
Select Charge Hyst. (CH). When temperature
TS1<BT-CH, pump RO1 will stop.
Select Pump off delay (PO). Here the delay is set, af-
ter which pump RO1 is to stop when the tank is full.
Select Charge pause (CRD). Set the delay when
charging is to start. The orange symbol indicates the
remaining pause. Press ESC twice.
Select Protective functions. Press OK. Select
Anti-blocking. Press OK.
System 4:
Select Pump restart delay. Set the restart delay for
the two pumps.
Select Domestic Water (DW). Set the temperature
DW in the domestic hot water tank when charge
pump RO2 is to stop. .
Select Tank set-point (SP). Set the temperature
SP at main tank top.
Select DW Hyst. (DH). When temperature TS2 <
DW-DH, the pump RO2 will start.
Select Charge Diff. (CD). When temperature TS1
has exceeded temperature TS2 by the value CD,
pump RO2 will start.
Select Charge Hyst. (CH). When temperature TS1
has fallen by the value CH, pump RO2 will stop.
Press ESC twice.
Select Protective functions. Press OK. Select

1.5.1Anti-block pr… Select Anti-blocking The pumps can be run daily
to prevent them from getting blocked. This func-
tion is not activated as long as the outputs are ac-
tivated in normal operation. Determine the time
of the day and the operating period. The pump
starts within 20 minutes of the set time. Press ESC.
Select Antifreeze protect.. Press OK.
1.5.3Antifreeze pr… If the function is activated and the temperature falls
below the adjusted Min.temperatur value, the cor-
responding pump is switched on. If Tank bot. Sen-
sor is activated in menu 0.7 it can also be used for
antifreeze protection. Press ESC twice. Select Moni-
toring.

are dened here. Should temperature change
Temp. change1 or Temp. change2 not have been
reached within Monitoring time, an error message

Select Sensor balancing. Press OK.
1.6.5 Sensor balan…. Long piping and other factors may distort measured
variables. Here an offset value can be entered for
each sensor. If a measured value is e.g. 80°C and the
display shows 85°C, the offset value is -5°C.
If a measures value is for e.g. 80°C and the display
shows 75°C, the offset value is +5°C. Press ESC
twice. Select Login. Press OK.
1.7 Login Select Manual mode. Press OK.
1.7.1 Manual mode In manual mode the individual outputs can be
activated for testing purposes, e.g. to check that
a pump is working properly. Manual mode can
only be exited by pressing ESC. The settings in
this menu are not saved.
If the professional mode is not exited actively, the SmartBio automatically displays
the selected hydraulic system after the display shut-off time and the value of the
login code is reset to 350.
Malfunction
The screen on top right shows the red Attention triangle which
points out a notication or an operating malfunction. Press OK.
1.10 Service Wizard
When Safety function appears in the display, this is a message. Smart-
Bio indicates that a protective function has been triggered.The mes-
sage is only active until normal operation has been restored.
SmartBio communicates malfunction processes in plain text. The
Service Wizard indicates the possible causes of malfunctions on
the basis of the detected symptoms and thus supports immediate
detection of deciencies.
For example MO2: Breakage of sensor on TS1 appears. Select Next.
Press OK.
The Service Wizard helps detect possible causes of malfunctions.
Possible reasons: Cable/connection or Sensor. Select a cause by
pressing OK. Select Exit. Press OK.
The Service Wizard provides the trouble-shooting instructions.
Press Next to go through all check-points.
Finally the repair information appears. Perform the appropriate
repair work. Press Exit to leave the Service Wizard.
After elimination of the malfunction, the plant screen without the
red attention triangle appears again on the display and automatic
mode is continued.

Funktionsbeschreibung
LK 160 SmartBio ist ein Temperaturdifferenzregler zur optimalen
Funktionssteuerung von Wärmeanlagen mit Pufferspeichern. Der
Regler hat sieben hydraulische Schemata für verschiedene Installa-
tionen.SmartBiobesitzt zurAnzeigedesBetriebszustandsund zurKom-
munikation bei Einrichtung, Meldung, Änderung und Auswertung
ein farbiges Vollgrafik-Display, das permanent hinterleuchtet ist. Alle
Einstellungen und Abfragen erfolgen über den Drehencoder und der
ESC-Taste. SmartBio hat einen Ausgang für Zusatzwärme, z.B. Heizpa-
tronen oder andere Wärmequellen. Die Einschaltung der Zusatzwärme
hat eine einstellbare Verzögerungsfunktion, was die Energieefzienz
der Anlage weiter verbessert.
Elektrischer Anschluss
Temperaturfühler vom Typ Pt 1000 müssen eingesetzt werden.
Jeder Temperaturfühler besitzt zwei Anschlüsse, die gleichwer-
tig und gegeneinander vertauschbar sind. Eine Polarität muss
hier nicht beachtet werden. Die Fühlerleitungen können bis zu
einer Länge von 100 m verlängert werden, dazu wird ein Lei-
tungsquerschnitt von 2 x 1,5 mm² empfohlen.
SmartBio darf nicht allein als Betriebsthermostat für Heiz-
patrone oder Brenner verwendet werden. Er muss immer über
vorhandenem Betriebsthermostat und Überhitzungsschutz ein-
geschaltet werden.
