1. APPLICATION
At present, more and more PC omputers operating in industrial omputer-based
systems are equipped only with a USB (Universal Serial Bus) serial interfa e. This
interfa e serves to ommuni ate with other omputers and devi es in the frame-
work of the USB network.
The PD12 onverter is a devi e enabling, in a very easy way, to reate the
onne tion between the USB and the RS-232 port , ensuring simultaneously betwe-
en them the galvani separation. The USB interfa e is destined to ommuni ate with
the omputer, however the RS-232 interfa e is destined to ommuni ate with
devi es in the obje t side.
The maximal baud rate is 921.6 kb/s.
The onverter does not interfere in the stru ture of transmitted data and is ompa-
tible with a lot of industrial ommuni ation proto ols, i.e. MODBUS RTU, MODBUS
ASCII, LUMBUS, and the like.
A programmed ontroller of the network serial port for the master system omputer
is added to the set. It allows supervising programs to ex hange data with industrial
obje ts via the PD12 onverter.
2. CONVERTER SET

When unpacking the converter, please check the delivery completeness and
whether the type and version code on the data plate correspond to the order.

3. CONVERTER INSTALLATION
3.1. Converter mounting
The onverter is a portable devi e supplied from z USB bus.
The PD12 onverter onne tion way is presented on the fig.1.

3.2. Description o converter leads
Markings of individual leads are shown on the fig. 2
External signals must be onne ted a . to tables 1 and 2, in whi h the assignment
of individual PD12 onverter leads are des ribed.
There are two diodes on the frontal plate :
Green (RxD) - signals the re eption of data via RS-232
Yellow (TxD) - signals the transmission of data via RS-232

3.3. Installation o the COM port or Windows
The PD12 onverter unfair advantage of FTDIBUS and FTDIPORT driver ontrollers,
li ensed by Future Te hnology Devi es International Ltd.
This software reates a new devi e of the Universal Serial Bus system - USB -
RS232 con erter of PD12 type and onne ted Port (Com) to it - PD12 USB-RS232
Port(COM).
The installation of a ontroller in the Windows system auses the addition of the
next COM serial port to the list of ports servi ed by the operating system.
3.4. Installation o COM port controllers on the computer
After onne ting the onverter to the USB port, the operating system will inform us
about the o urren e of a new devi e by means of the system. The reator, finding
the new hardware of the Universal Serial Bus will be started automati ally.
One must pro eed a . to the reator suggestions, hoosing the Installation from
the indi ated lo ation and giving the a ess path to ontrollers being on the plate
added to the onverter.
On the plate with ontrollers, there are ontrollers for following operating systems:
Windows 98, 98SE, 2000, ME and XP. When installing ontrollers, information that
the software has not been submitted to tests in a ordan e with the Windows
system

an o ur. One must ignore su h information and ontinue the further installation.
After losing the reator, the system dete ts immediately the next devi e - USB
Serial Port.
The reator to find a new hardware will be started again.
After the su essful installation termination, the system will inform about the instal-
lation of a new hardware.
Two new devi es will appear in the devi e Manager - The USB-RS232 con erter of
PD12 type and PD12 USB-RS232 Port (COM).
3.5. Example o Lumel Heat and Lumel 3000
con iguration to co-operate wit PD12
Lumel-Heat and Lumel 3000 systems ommuni ate with industrial devi es by means
of COM serial ports.
After installing additional COM serial ports, one an refer to them in systems of
LUMEL series. Then, one must introdu e in new and existing appli ations or system
onfigurations, or hange supervision an ellations to added ommuni ation ports.
Lumel-Energy programs in older version than 2.5, servi e maximally 4 serial ports
and in su h systems, serial ports must be installed as COM1...4).
4. NOTES
The PD12 onverter an work with a maximal baud rate up to 921.6 kb/s on lines to
15 m length.
In the en ironment with unknown interference le el it is recommended
to obser e following principles:
lConne tions of ommuni ation interfa e ir uits must be ondu t
individually by twisted wires in a shield.
lApply the general prin iple that wires (group of wires) leading different
signals should be led in the possible farthest distan e between them
(not less than 50 m) and the rossing of su h group of wires should
be made at right angle.

7. MAINTENANCE AND WARRANTY
The PD12 onverter does not require any periodi al maintenan e. In ase of some
in orre t operations:
1. After the dispatch date and within the period stated in the warranty card
One should return the instrument to the manufa turers Quality Inspe tion
Dept. If the instrument has been used in omplian e with the instru tions, the
manufa turer warrants to repair it free of harge. The disassembling of the
housing auses the an ellation of the granted warranty.
2. After the warranty period
One should send the instrument to repair it in an authorized servi e workshop.
Spare parts are available for the period of five years from the date of pur hase.

neering ad ances or necessity requires and re ise the abo e specifica-
tions without notice.
