AnapplicationforA THREEYEARSERVICECONTRACTisincludedwiththismanual.
Thetermsofthecontractare:
1.Iftheinstrumentcoveredbythiscontractbecomesdefective,Mcintoshwillprovideallparts,
materials,andlaborneededtoreturnthemeasuredperformanceoftheinstrumenttothe
originalperformancelimitsfreeofanycharge.Theservicecontractdoesnotcoverany
shippingcoststoandfromtheauthorizedserviceagencyorthefactory.
2.AnyMcintoshauthorizedserviceagencywillrepairallMcintoshinstrumentsatnormal
servicerates.Toreceivethefreeserviceunderthetermsoftheservicecontract,theser-
vicecontractcertificatemustaccompanytheinstrumentwhentakentotheserviceagency.
3.Alwayshaveservicedonebya Mcintoshauthorizedserviceagency.Ifthe instrument is
modified or damaged as a result of unauthorized repair the service contract will be cancell-
ed. Damagebyimproperuseormishandlingisnotcoveredbytheservicecontract.
4.Theservicecontractisissuedtoyouastheoriginalpurchaser.Toprotectyoufrom

trollingtwoseparatelisteningareas.TheLISTENsignalsaredefinedasAreaA whichisusually

ata pairofoutputsmarkedB,andcanbeusedfora remoteareawithitsowndedicated
poweramplifierandpairofspeakers.
Dataportsareprovidedforsevenaudioremotecontrolledaccessories.Thisfeatureallows
youtocontrola compatibleunitbytransmittingwithitshandheldremotecontrollerdirect
toa C38sensor.A dataportisalsoprovidedtocontroltheoptionalMcintoshMVS-3Video
Selectorforswitchingvideosignalsinadditiontoaudiosignals.Anotherdataportconnects
totheoptionalMcintoshHC-1HomeControllertoallowcontrolofaccessoriesorappliances.
TheconvenienceofC38remotecontroloperationisenhancedbyitscapabilityofdirectly
interfacingwiththeMcintoshCR10RemoteControlSystem.TheCR10canaddanadditional
fourremoteareasofcontrol.
Thereareeightpairsofhighlevelinputstoaccommodateallthetraditionalprogramsources
aswellasthemostrecentnewsources.A pairoflowlevelinputsisalsoprovidedthatwill
acceptsignalsfroma movingmagnetphonocartridgeina recordplayer.DigitalLogicin-
tegratedcircuitsdriveElectromagneticSwitchesonallinputsandoperatingfunctionsforthe
mostreliableanddistortionfreeswitchingavailable.
SeparateRECORDandLISTENcircuitsallowrecordingfromonesourcewhilelistening
toanother.A continuouslyvariableActiveLoudnessControlallowsloudnesscompensation
tobeselectedforanysettingofthevolumecontrol.TheLoudnessControlcircuitelements
areremovedfromthecircuitpathwhenthecontrolisintheflatorfullycounterclockwise
position.
BassandTrebletonecontrolsprovide12dBofboostorcut.Atthecenter"FlatResponse"
ordetentpositionofthetonecontrols,alltonecontrolcircuitelementsareremovedfrom
thesignalpath.
TwoSignalProcessorloopsareprovided.OneisforListensignalsandoneisforRecord
signals.Powersupplyvoltageregulatorcircuitsmaintainstableoperationeventhoughthe
ACpowerlinemayvary.Doubleshieldingofthepowertransformercompletelyisolatesitfrom
theaudiocircuits.Thiseliminatestheneedfora clumsyoutboardpowertransformerused
bysomelesssophisticateddesigns.
Frontpanelpushbuttonscontroltwoswitchedoutputsaswellastwopairsofspeakers
whenanoptionalSCR3switchingrelayisadded.
TheMcintoshC38"ClassicGlass"frontpanelhasallcontrol,switchandpushbutton
nomenclatureilluminated.

TheC38canbeplaceduprightona tableorshelf,standingonitsownplasticfeet.Itcan
alsobeinstalledinanoptionalMcintoshL72equipmentcabinet.Followthemountinginstruc-
tionsenclosedwiththeL72cabinet.
TheC38canalsobecustominstalledina pieceoffurnitureorcabinetofyourchoice.
TherequiredpanelcutoutandunitdimensionsareshownonPage18ofthismanual.
AlwaysprovideadequateventilationforyourC38,eventhoughitdevelopsverylittleheat.
Cooloperationinsuresthelongestpossibleoperatinglifeforanyelectronicinstrument.Do
notinstallyourC38directlyabovea heatgeneratingcomponentsuchasa highpowered
amplifier.Ina systemstack,thepoweramplifiershouldalwaysbeatthetop.Ifallthecom-
ponentsareinstalledina singlecabinet,a quietrunningventilationfancanbea definiteasset
inmaintainingallthesystemcomponentsatthecoolestpossibletemperatures.
Acustomcabinetinstallationshouldallowthefollowingrecommendedminimumspacing
dimensionsforcooloperation.Allowatleast1 1/2inches(3.8cm)abovetheunitsoairflow
isnotobstructed.Allow17inches(43.2cm)depthbehindthemountingpanel,whichincludes
clearanceforconnectors.Allow1 1/8inches(2.9cm)infrontofthemountingpanelforknob
clearance.

panels of the C38. Fold it out to assist you in identifying and locating the front panel
controls, switches, pushbuttons, and the rear panel connectors. The letters and

other.TheBALANCEcontrolaffectsonlytheMAIN,SWITCHED1 and2,andBALANCED(Area
A)outputs.
L,(Left):Turnthecontroltothelefttoaccenttheleftchannelbyreducingthevolume
oftherightchannel.
R,(Right):Turnthecontroltotherighttoaccenttherightchannelbyreducingthevolume
oftheleftchannel.
LOUDnesscontrol,(smallinnerknob),providesfrequencyresponsecontouredtocompen-
sateforthebehaviorofthehumanearatsofterlisteninglevels.Atthefullycounterclockwise
detentposition,thefrequencyresponseisperfectlyflatandtheloudnesscircuitcomponents
areremovedfromthesignalpath.Turnthecontrolclockwisetomodifythefrequencyresponse
inthecorrectproportionrequiredforsofterlisteninglevels.Thecompensatedfrequency
responseisnotaffectedbychangesinthevolumecontrolsettings.Firstadjustthevolume
forthedesiredlisteninglevel,thenadjusttheLoudnessControltothesettingyoupersonally
prefer.
TheLoudnessControlaffectsonlytheMAIN,SWITCHED1 and2,andBALANCED(Area
A)outputs.
NOTE: The flat frequency response setting of the LOUDness Control is at the fully COUNTER
CLOCKWISE position, not at the center or 12 o'clock position where the Balance Control is
neutral.

TurnonAreaB anditsdedicatedpoweramplifierbypressingtheHR38POWERpushbut-
tonwheninAreaB whereitsareaIRsensorislocated.WhenAreaB firstcomeson,the
Tunersignalswillautomaticallybeselectedata volumelevel50dBbelowmaximum.Allthe
programaccessoryunitsconnectedtotheC38SwitchedACoutletwillalsoturnon,allowing
youtoselectanydesiredsignal.
TheC38frontpanelwillbeilluminated,buttheMAINorAreaA willbeinMutemode.To
restoreoperationinAreaA,pressthePOWERbuttoneitherontheC38frontpanelorwith
theHR38.AreaA canbeturnedononlyinAreaA.
ALL THE ABOVE OPERATING FUNCTIONS CAN BE PERFORMED AT THE C38 FRONT PANEL,
AS WELL AS BY PUSHBUTTONS ON THE HR38 HAND HELD REMOTE CONTROLLER.

Slideopenthebatterycompartment.InserttwotypeAAbatteriesintothecompartment,
makingsuretoobservethebatterypolaritiesindicatedinthebatterycompartment.
Whenthebatteriesarenearingexhaustion,theeffectiverangeoftheremotecontroller
decreases,andMAYevenfailtooperate.Inthiscase,replacebothbatterieswithfreshones.
NOTE:
1.Donotmixoldandnewbatteries.UseONLYbatteriesthatarenew.
2.Makesurebothbatteriesareofthesametypeandidentical.
3.Topreventdamagecausedbypossiblebatteryleakage,removethebatteriesfromtheremote
controllerifitisnotgoingtobeusedforanextendedperiodoftime.
4.Neverdismantlebatteriesordisposeofthem ina fire,astheymayexplode.Disposeof
oldbatteriesinanapprovedmethodforpropersafety.
UsehighqualitycablestointerconnecttheC38withitsassociatedequipment.Quality
cableswillensurethebestpossibleperformancefromyourMcintoshstereosystem.Your

Connecta cablewithanXLRtypebalancedconnectorfromeachoftheC38BALANC-
EDOUTPUTjackstothebalancedinputjacksofa poweramplifier.
Usingbalancedconnectorsandcablescanreducenoiseorinterferencebyasmuch
as40dBespeciallyifthecablesarequitelong.Iftwoseparatemonopoweramplifiersare
usedina stereosystem,usingbalancedcablescanreducethepossibilityofhumpickup.

tendfromthebottomintheformofprintedcircuitboardterminals.
Whena DCvoltageisappliedtothecoil,currentflowsandcreatesa magneticfield.The
forceofthefieldcausestheleadstobendandcontactoneanotherinsidethesealedglass
tube.Theinertoxygenfreeatmosphereeliminatescorrosionofthecontacts,insuringa low
resistance,distortionfreeswitch.TheswitchingcontrolsignalscomefromtheC38logic
circuits.
PHONOPREAMPLIFIER
Thephonopreamplifierusesa hightechnologyintegratedcircuitoperationalamplifierthat
hasanextremelywidefrequencyrangecapability.Itsdifferentialinputstagehasbeenop-
timizedforlownoiseandlowdistortion.Theopenloopgainforthiscircuitis100,000.With
highopenloopgain,a largeamountofnegativefeedbackcanbeusedaroundthispreamplifier
sectiontoreducenoiseanddistortiontoanextremelylowvalue.Thefeedbacknetworkalso
providesprecisionRIAAfrequencyequalizationwhichfollowstherequiredresponsecurve
veryaccuratelythroughouttheentireaudiorange.Thenetworkuses1%tolerancemetalfilm
resistorsand5%tolerancepolypropylenecapacitors.
Toachievelow-noiseperformance,itisessentialthatthefeedbacknetworkhaveverylow
impedance.A circuitdesignofthistypeactsasa smallpoweramplifier.Thispreamplifier
sectionwillactuallyproducemorethan100milliwattsoutputpower.Thisextramarginofper-
formanceresultsina phonopreamplifierwithextremelylowdistortionandnoise.
Thispreamplifiercircuithasa verywidedynamicrange.Itwillacceptupto90millivolts
ofinputsignalwithoutoverload.Thisisfargreaterthanthemaximumoutputvoltagecapability
ofanycurrentmodelmagneticphonocartridge.
Thesensitivityofthiscircuitis2.5millivoltsfor2.5voltsatthemainoutput.Thegainis
40dBat1000Hz.A signalinputof10millivoltsresultsin1 voltattheTapeOutputs.TheTape
Outputsourceimpedanceofthephonopreamplifierislessthan100ohms,andwilldrive
aloadimpedanceof1000ohmsorhigher.

LOUDNESSAMPLIFIER
Highlevelsignalsfeedintothepreamplifierpasttheinputandmodeswitching,through
thevolumecontrolandthenintotheloudnessamplifier.TheC38usesanactiveloudness
controlcircuitdesign.Anintegratedcircuitoperationalamplifierisusedwithtwoseparatefeed-
backcircuits.Onefeedbackloophasflatfrequencyresponse,andtheotherloophasloudness
compensation.A potentiometerplacedbetweenthesetwofeedbackloopsmakesitpossible
toselectanydegreeoffrequencyresponsefromflat,tofullloudnesscompensation.The
overallgainoftheloudnesscircuitis20dB,whichremainsconstantatmidfrequencies,
regardlessofthepositionoftheloudnesscontrol.Thebassandtreblecompensationincrease
fromthereferencegain,andthedesiredamountofloudnesscompensationcanbeselected
atanyvolumecontrolsetting.
TONECONTROLAMPLIFIER
Thetonecontrolamplifieruseshightechnologyintegratedcircuitoperationalamplifiers.
Theoutputstageshavebeenoptimizedforoptimumtransientperformanceandminimum
distortion.Anothersetofoperationalamplifiersisarrangedina circuitconfigurationequivalent
toseriestunedcircuits.Theseriestunedcircuitscanbeinsertedintoeithertheinput,or
thefeedbackloopbymeansofa potentiometer.Theproperchoiceofcircuitcomponents
resultsina 12dBboostorcutatthedesiredbassandtreblefrequencies.Whenthetone
controlpotentiometersareattheircenterordetentpositions,alltonecontrolelementsare
removedfromthesignalpath,andthefrequencyresponseisperfectlyflat.
