1.1 Introduction
Please observe the following safety instructions when you use the system. In addition to
this information, it is important that you follow the instructions in the individual chapters
of the manual.
The system described in this manual complies with the requirements of the “DIN EN
60204.1 Electrical equipment of machines” standard and has been delivered in a fault-
free condition. In order to maintain this condition and ensure reliable usage, the operator
must observe the instructions and warnings on the system and in this manual.
It is necessary to contact Micro-Epsilon Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG before the system
is modified or is combined in any way with parts and/or systems which have not been
approved by Micro-Epsilon or which are not described in this manual.
This manual is an important part of the system and must be read carefully before the
system is put into operation for the first time. This manual contains important information
concerning safety and maintenance. It must be kept at the system for this reason.
1.1.1 Validity
This manual is valid for MTS 8201.LLT, Item No. 4350006.71, manufactured by Micro-Ep-
silon Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG. The manufacturer reserves the right to make tech-
nical changes for the purpose of further development. In this case, an appendix to this
manual will be provided. The purchaser is required to check the version of the manual
and to include every addendum concerning technical innovations. The manufacturer
shall accept no liability for the correctness and completeness of the information stated in
this manual. The reader is requested to inform Micro-Epsilon Messtechnik GmbH & Co.
KG if any errors are found.
1.1.2 Software Security
The following important information must be observed for all application software based
on thicknessCONTROL. The modification of hardware or software components in the
thicknessCONTROL system industrial PC is essentially not permitted. Exceptions must
be approved of in writing by Micro-Epsilon Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG. The automatic
start of software components that do not originate from Micro-Epsilon Messtechnik
GmbH & Co. KG and which run in the background of the measurement process is not
permitted. When using virus scanners, the operator must be aware that the system will
be restricted and that malfunctions may occur with respect to real-time capabilities. Thus
the system cannot be reliably operated during this time. The integration of systems from
Micro-Epsilon Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG into networks must only be performed by
qualified personnel. In doing so, the system operator is responsible for security on the
network.
Micro-Epsilon Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG shall accept no claims arising from non-
observance of these safety instructions.

The following section explains how the system works. The task of measuring system thicknessCONTROL MTS 8201.
LLT is non-contact inline thickness measurement.

The measuring method of the unit is based on double-sided thickness measurement,
consisting of two laser-optical triangulation scanners, which measure the target from
opposite positions. The thickness D of the target is calculated in the touchscreen IPC.

System operation assumes knowledge of the operating instructions.
1.3.1 Symbols Used
The following symbols are used in these operating instructions:
CAUTION Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in
minor or moderate injury.
NOTICE
Indicates a situation that may result in property damage if not
avoided.
Indicates a user action.
iIndicates a tip for users.
Measurement Indicates hardware or a button/menu.
1.3.2 Intended Use
-The thicknessCONTROL MTS 8201.LLT measuring system is designed for use in industrial environments.
-It is used for thickness measurement of electrically conductive materials.
-The measuring system must only be operated within the limits specified in the technical data.
-The system must be used in such a way that no persons are endangered or machines are damaged in the event of
malfunction or total failure of the system.
-Take additional precautions for safety and damage prevention in case of safety-related applications.

Never reach between the measurement carriage, the base frame and the target during
operation.
> Crushing hazard
Only operate the machine when all covers are present.

Do not look directly into the laser source for the laser-optical sensors
> Risk of blinding
Do not brake suddenly while transporting the measuring system and the transport pallet.
The measuring system can fall off of the forklift! Prevent the measuring system from fall-
ing off the forklift, e.g. by using lashing straps.
Do not bypass or remove the limit switches.
Avoid shocks and impacts to the sensors.
> Damage to or destruction of the measuring system
Connect the power supply according to the safety regulations for electrical equipment.
> Damage to or destruction of the measuring system
Protect the cables against damage.
> Failure of the measuring device
Modifications to the measuring system are only permitted with the agreement of
MICRO-EPSILON.
The personnel training must also include the safety aspects.
-Improper use: Any use other than those listed above is prohibited. Hazards can occur
with improper use. The personal protective equipment (PPE) necessary must be pro-
vided by the operating company.
-Protective equipment: All protective equipment, including the devices installed by the
operating company, must be properly installed and functional before each start-up.
Safety devices may only be removed when the system is shut down and protected
against restarting of the measuring system (e.g. padlock on the main switch).
-Informal safety precautions: The operating instructions must always be kept at the
measuring system. In addition to the operating instructions, the generally applicable
and local regulations for accident prevention and environmental protection must
also be provided and observed. All safety instructions and hazard warnings on the
measuring system must be kept in legible condition and replaced as needed.
-Safety precautions in normal operation: Before the measuring system is switched
on, it must be ensured that nobody can be endangered from the measuring system
startup. The measuring system must be checked for external damage and the safety
equipment for functionality at least once a day.
-Dangers due to electrical energy: Work on the electrical power supply must only be
performed by a qualified electrician. The electrical equipment of the system must be
checked regularly. Any loose or scorched connections must be remedied immediately.
The control cabinets must always be kept closed. Access is only permitted for
authorized personnel with a key or tool.
-Dangers due to residual energy: Be aware that there may be residual mechanical and
electrical energy present. Appropriate precautions must be taken when instructing
staff. Read the detailed instructions in the corresponding sections.
1.3.4 Maintenance and Repair
-Maintenance and repair: Specified adjustment, maintenance, and inspection work
must be carried out at the specified intervals.. During all maintenance, inspection and
repair work, the system must be disconnected from the power and the main switch
secured against an unexpected restart.

When replacing large components, these must be carefully attached to and secured
on lifting equipment using the attachment points provided on the system. Loosened
screw joint be checked for tightness. After completion of the maintenance work, the
safety devices must be checked for functionality.
-Structural modifications to the measuring system: No modifications, attachments to
or conversions of the measuring system may be made without the permission of the
manufacturer. All conversion measures require the written approval of Micro-Epsilon
Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG. Parts of the system that are not in trouble-free condition
must be replaced immediately. In addition, only original spare and wear parts must be
used. Parts obtained from third parties are not guaranteed to have the correct design
with regard to load and safety.
-Cleaning and disposal of the system: The substances and materials used must be
handled and disposed of properly, in particular when:
working on lubrication systems and equipment
cleaning with solvents.
-System noise: The continuous sound pressure level emitted by the system is less than
70 db(A). Depending on the local conditions, a higher sound pressure level may be
produced, causing noise-induced hearing loss. In this case, the operating personnel
must be protected by appropriate safety equipment or safety precautions.
-Fire-fighting: It is vital to switch off the system at the main switch during fire fighting,
otherwise fires caused by electricity cannot be effectively extinguished. The internal
alarm and fire protection regulations of the operator (customer) must be complied
with.
-Reversal in the case of emergency: A reversing device is not provided in the event of
an emergency.
1.4 Training of Personnel
-Only trained and instructed personnel are permitted to work on the system.
-The responsibilities of the personnel for operating, retooling and maintenance must
be clearly specified. Personnel undergoing training are only permitted to work on the
system under the supervision of an experienced person.
Only instructed personnel are permitted to operate the controller.
Instruction should be acknowledged in writing.
The persons operating the system (instructed persons) must be computer literate
(i.e. possess skills with common PC programs).

1.5 Foreseeable Misuse
If the target/strip material flow has started, the calibration part holder may not be retract-

1.6 Liability for Material Defects
All components of the device have been checked and tested for functionality at the facto-
ry. However, if defects occur despite our careful quality control, MICRO-EPSILON or your
dealer must be notified immediately. The liability for material defects is 12 months from
delivery. Within this period, defective parts, except for wearing parts, will be repaired
or replaced free of charge, if the device is returned to MICRO-EPSILON with shipping
costs prepaid. Any damage that is caused by improper handling, the use of force or by
repairs or modifications by third parties is not covered by the liability for material defects.
Repairs are carried out exclusively by MICRO-EPSILON.
Further claims can not be made. Claims arising from the purchase contract remain unaf-
fected. In particular, MICRO-EPSILON shall not be liable for any consequential, special,
indirect or incidental damage. In the interest of further development, MICRO-EPSILON
reserves the right to make design changes without notification. For translations into other
languages, the German version shall prevail.

2. Laser Safety
2.1 scanCONTROL 2900-50
The scanCONTROL 2900-50 sensors operate with a semiconductor laser with a wave-
length of 658 nm (visible/red). The laser operation is indicated visually by the LED on the
sensor.
When operating the scanCONTROL 2900-50 sensors, the relevant regulations according
to EN 60825-1 (IEC 60825, Part 1 of 07/2015) and the applicable accident prevention
regulations must be followed.
The housings of the scanCONTROL 2900-50 optical sensors must only be opened by
authorized personnel, see 1.6. For repair and service purposes, the sensors should
always be returned to the manufacturer.
2.2 Laser Class 2M
scanCONTROL 2900-50 sensors with a maximum laser power up to 8 mW, see 9.4 (sec-
tion 3.2) are classified in Laser Class 2M (IIM).
Accordingly, the following applies:
With laser equipment of the Class 2M, the eye is not put in danger during random, short-
term exposure to the laser radiation, i.e. exposure duration up to 0.25 s.
A direct glimpse into the beam can be dangerous if the eye-closure reflex is deliberately
suppressed, e.g. during adjustment. Direct viewing into the beam with optical aids, e.g. a
magnifying glass, is dangerous.
Laser equipment of the Class 2M can be employed without further protective measures,
when deliberate viewing into the laser beam or into a beam reflected by mirrors is not
longer than 0.25 s.
Since generally the presence of the eye-closure reflex should not be assumed, one
should close the eyes or immediately turn away if the laser radiation impinges on the
eye.
The following information labels are fitted to the sensor housing (front and rear side):

Lasers of Class 2M are not subject to notification and a laser protection officer is not
required. Mark the laser area recognizable and everlasting.
iIf both information labels are hidden in the installed state, the user must ensure that additional labels are fitted at the point of installation.

3. Overview of the Mechanical Components
Mechanical commissioning is described in this third volume of the manual. The mechanical structure and its
functioning begin in the second chapter with the base frame components. Next, calibration is explained. The
fourth chapter concludes with the human-machine interface for the operation of the system and the instructions for
transport.
3.1 General Points before Initial Operation
The thicknessCONTROL MTS 8201.LLT system, see Fig. 6 achieves a resolution in the micrometer range of ≤ ±5 µm.
For this reason, the mechanical components and sensors are matched to one another in every detail. Insofar as is
constructively possible, mechanical assemblies and individual parts which are not subject to adjustment have been
used. Such parts/assemblies which have to be adjusted for functional reasons have been adjusted by Micro-Epsilon.
The commissioning of the system does not require any adjustment work by the customer.

The base frame forms the basis of the system. It accommodates the traversing/measurement carriage in the upper
and lower belt and the remaining components. The frame consists of a solid aluminium frame.

The side covers of the measuring system are suspended with hooks and thus secured
against falling down after undoing the fastening screws.

3.2.2 Measurement Carriage
The measurement carriage is described in the following sections. This is the central ele-
ment of the measuring system. It is used as support for the laser sensors which are used
for the thickness measurement of the product.

3.2.3 Sensors
The two triangulation scanners measure without contact the thickness of the strip as they
pass between the two upper and lower belts of the measuring system, see Fig. 2.

3.2.4 Scrapers, Lower Measurement Carriage
In addition to the scrapers, the lower measurement carriage has scrapers on both sides
of the linear guide. The abrasion from the object being measured falls into a dirt pan and
is pushed by the scrapers on both sides to the respective end of the measuring system.
The abrasion falls through the measuring system there.

3.2.5 Master target
In the first step a temperature-stable master target is pneumatically swiveled into the
parking position; it is used for calculating the measuring gap. At the end of this measure-
ment, the master target is swiveled back pneumatically into its home position.
A reference measurement is also made. Here, the entire traverse width is traced with a
target of known thickness to detect errors and unevenness. These values are stored and
used by the measuring systems as a zero and error curve.

3.3.2 Drive Upper Measurement Carriage
The measurement carriages are movable connected to the base frame using linear bear-
ings (1), see Fig. 13. The measurement carriages are moved by an electric drive unit with
belt drive (2), see Fig. 14. Both belt drives are mechanically coupled to the drive motor
through a synchronous shaft in order to avoid an offset of the measuring carriages to
each other.

The sequence of steps of the drive motor for the measurement carriages is detected by
an angle sensor and read out, thus enabling an assignment of the measured values in
the transverse direction.
3.3.4 Limit Switch
Two end position sensors each detect the end positions of the upper and lower measure-
ment carriages. End stops (parabolic springs) prevent a collision between the measure-
ment carriage and the base frame.

The guiding wagons on the measurement carriages contain wipers, which remove any
large particles of dust or wear debris from the rubber webs.
The guiding wagons of each measurement carriage contains 3 lubricating nipples.
Lubrication is carried out according to the instructions in the maintenance schedule, see
7.1.2.
3.3.6 Reference Ruler, Thermal Compensation
The base frame and the guidance of the measuring carriages are exposed to thermal
changes which influence the geometry of the base frame. In order to avoid that these
changes in geometry also influence the thickness measurement, the distance of both
measurement carriages to the reference rulers is measured each with a capacitive
sensor. Both measurements are used to correct the thickness calculation. Both measure-
ments used to correct the thickness calculation.

3.3.7 Guidance Upper Reference Ruler
The reference rulers made of stainless steel can expand freely in the longitudinal
direction. The upper reference ruler is held by two rollers. Sideways it is guided with
ball casters and tension springs. The lower reference ruler is mounted to the upper
reference ruler with two Invar rods. Sidewards, it is also guided with ball casters and
tension springs. The lower reference ruler is freely suspended in the air. Upper and lower
reference ruler form a reference plane in the measuring system.
