1.1 Introduction
This documentation describes the non-contact thickness measurement of endless belt/
strips and plates. Please observe the following safety instructions when you use the sys-
tem. In addition to this information, it is important that you follow the instructions in the
individual chapters of the manual.
The system described in this manual complies with the requirements of the “DIN EN
60204.1 Electrical equipment of machines” standard and has been delivered in a fault-
free condition. In order to maintain this condition and ensure reliable usage, the operator
must observe the instructions and warnings on the system and in this manual.
It is necessary to contact Micro-Epsilon Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG before the system
is modified or is combined in any way with parts and/or systems which have not been
approved by Micro-Epsilon or which are not described in this manual.
This manual is an important part of the system and must be read carefully before the
system is put into operation for the first time. This manual contains important information
concerning safety and maintenance. It must be kept at the system for this reason.
1.1.1 Validity
This manual is valid for MTS 8202.LLT, Item No. 4350127.256, manufactured by Mi-
cro-Epsilon Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG. The manufacturer reserves the right to make
technical changes for the purpose of further development. In this case, an appendix to
this manual will be provided. The purchaser is required to check the version of the man-
ual and to include every addendum concerning technical innovations. The manufacturer
shall accept no liability for the correctness and completeness of the information stated in
this manual. The reader is requested to inform Micro-Epsilon Messtechnik GmbH & Co.
KG if any errors are found.
1.1.2 Software security
The following important information must be observed for all application software based
on thicknessCONTROL. The modification of hardware or software components in the
thicknessCONTROL system industrial PC is essentially not permitted. Exceptions must
be approved of in writing by Micro-Epsilon Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG. The automat-
ic start of software components that do not originate from Micro-Epsilon Messtechnik
GmbH & Co. KG and which run in the background of the measurement process is not
permitted. When using virus scanners, the operator must be aware that the system will
be restricted and that malfunctions may occur with respect to real-time capabilities. Thus
the system cannot be reliably operated during this time. The integration of systems from
Micro-Epsilon Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG into networks must only be performed by
qualified personnel. In doing so, the system operator is responsible for security on the
network.
Micro-Epsilon Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG shall accept no claims arising from non-ob-
servance of these safety instructions.

1.2 Thickness Measurement System Description
This section explains how the measuring machine works. The task of the MTS 8202.LLT
measuring machine is non-contact thickness measurement of belt/strip material.

The measuring method of the unit is based on double-sided thickness measurement,
consisting of two laser-optical triangulation scanners, which measure the target from
opposite positions. The thickness of the target is calculated on the touchscreen IPC.

The thickness determination does not require any complex target support. The main
advantage is that vibrations of the target do not result in inaccurate measurement. The
positional tolerance of the target is determined from the working gap, the start of meas-
uring range (SMR), see Fig. 2 and the measuring range (MR) of the sensors (triangula-
tion scanners).

System operation assumes knowledge of the operating instructions.
1.3.1 Symbols Used
The following symbols are used in these operating instructions:
CAUTION Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in
minor or moderate injury.
NOTICE
Indicates a situation that may result in property damage if not avoid-
ed.
Indicates a user action.
iIndicates a tip for users.
Measurement Indicates hardware or a software button/menu.
1.3.2 Intended Use
-The MTS 8202.LLT measuring machine is used for measuring the thickness of endless
belts/strips and plates.
-The measuring system must only be operated within the limits specified in the techni-
cal data, see 9.3.
-The system must be used in such a way that no persons are endangered or machines
are damaged in the event of malfunction or total failure of the system.
-Take additional precautions for safety and damage prevention in case of safety-related
applications.

Protect air hoses, water-carrying hoses and avoid heavy soiling, e.g. on the sensors or
on possible cooling units.
> Failure of the measuring device
Personnel training must also include the safety aspects.
-Improper use: Any use other than that listed above is prohibited. Hazards can occur
with improper use. The personal protective equipment necessary must be provided by
the operating company (customer).
-Protective equipment: All protective equipment, including the devices installed by the
operating company, must be properly installed and functional before each start-up.
Safety devices may only be removed when the measuring machine is shut down and
protected against restarting (e.g. padlock on the main switch).
-Informal safety precautions: The operating instructions must always be kept at the
measuring machine. In addition to the operating instructions, the generally applicable
and local regulations for accident prevention and environmental protection must also
be provided and observed. All safety instructions and hazard warnings on the measur-
ing machine must be kept in legible condition and replaced as needed.
-Safety precautions in normal operation: Before the measuring machine is switched
on, it must be ensured that nobody can be endangered from the machine startup. The
measuring machine must be checked for external damage and the safety equipment
for functionality at least once a day.
1.3.4 Maintenance and Repair
-Maintenance and repair: Specified adjustment, maintenance, and inspection work
must be carried out at the specified intervals, see 7.
-Structural modifications to the measuring machine: No modifications, attachments to,
or conversions of the measuring machine may be made without the permission of the
manufacturer. All conversion measures require the written approval of Micro-Epsilon
Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG. Parts of the system that are not in trouble-free condition
must be replaced immediately. In addition, only original spare and wear parts must be
used. Parts obtained from third parties are not guaranteed to have the correct design
with regard to load and safety.
-Cleaning and disposal of the measuring machine: The substances and materials used
must be handled and disposed of properly, in particular when:
working on lubrication systems and equipment
cleaning with solvents
-System noise: The continuous sound pressure level emitted by the system is less than
70 db(A).
1.4 Training of personnel
-Only trained and instructed personnel are permitted to work on the system.
-The responsibilities of personnel for operating, retooling, and maintenance must be
clearly specified. Personnel undergoing training are only permitted to work on the
system under the supervision of an experienced person.
Only trained personnel are permitted to operate the controller.
The training should be acknowledged in writing.

1.5 Foreseeable Misuse
If the target/belt material flow has started, the calibration component holder may not be
retracted. Collision of the target/strip material with the calibration component holder.
During the reference measurement, the target/strip material flow must not be started.

1.6 Liability for Material Defects
All components of the device have been checked and tested for functionality at the facto-
ry. However, if defects occur despite our careful quality control, MICRO-EPSILON or your
dealer must be notified immediately.
The liability for material defects is 12 months from delivery. Within this period, defective
parts, except for wearing parts, will be repaired or replaced free of charge, if the device
is returned to MICRO-EPSILON with shipping costs prepaid. Any damage that is caused
by improper handling, the use of force or by repairs or modifications by third parties is
not covered by the liability for material defects. Repairs are carried out exclusively by
MICRO-EPSILON.
Further claims can not be made. Claims arising from the purchase contract remain unaf-
fected. In particular, MICRO-EPSILON shall not be liable for any consequential, special,
indirect or incidental damage. In the interest of further development, MICRO-EPSILON
reserves the right to make design changes without notification. For translations into other
languages, the German version shall prevail.

2. Laser Safety
2.1 scanCONTROL 2900-50
The scanCONTROL 2900-50 sensors operate with a semiconductor laser with a wave-
length of 658 nm (visible/red). The operation of the laser is indicated by an LED on the
sensor.
When operating the sensors, the relevant regulations in accordance with DIN EN 60825-
1 (VDE 0837, Part 1, dated 07/2015) and the accident prevention regulation on laser
radiation (BGV [regulation of the Employers’ Liability Insurance] B2) valid in Germany
must be observed.
The housings of the optical scanCONTROL 2900-50 sensors may only be opened by
authorized personnel, see 1.6. For repair and service purposes the sensors must always
be sent to the manufacturer.
2.2 Laser Class 2M
ScanCONTROL 2900-50 sensors with a maximum laser power up to 8 mW, see 9.4 (sec-
tion 3.2), are classified in Laser Classe 2M (IIM).
Accordingly, the following applies:
With laser equipment of the Class 2M, the eye is not put in danger during random, short-
term exposure to the laser radiation, i.e. exposure duration up to 0.25 s.
A direct glimpse into the beam can be dangerous if the eye-closure reflex is deliberately
suppressed, e.g. during adjustment. Directly viewing into the beam with optical aids, e.g.
magnifying glass, is dangerous.
Laser equipment of the Class 2M can be employed without further protective measures,
when deliberate viewing into the laser beam or into a beam reflected by mirrors is not
longer than 0.25 s.
Since generally the presence of the eye-closure reflex should not be assumed, one
should close the eyes or immediately turn away if the laser radiation impinges on the
eye.
The following information labels are fitted to the sensor housing (front and rear side):

The laser labels for Germany are already printed on. The labels for the EU area and the
USA are enclosed and must be fitted by the user for the region applicable in each case
before the equipment is put into operation.
Lasers of Class 2M are not subject to notification and a laser protection officer is not
required. Mark the laser area recognizable and everlasting.
iIf both information labels are hidden in the installed state, the user ensure that addi- tional labels are fitted at the point of installation.

2.4 One-Way Light Barrier
An opto-electronic sensor is used to detect material height/thickness, see 9.5. This one-
way light barrier detects fluctuations of the material in horizontal position and consists of
a transmitter and a receiver.

3. Overview of Mechanical Components
This third volume of the manual explains the mechanical commissioning. The mechan-
ical design and its way of working start in the second chapter with the components of
the base frame. Then, calibration is explained. The third volume is rounded off with the
electrical connections of the measuring machine.
3.1 General Points before Commissioning
The MTS 8202.LLT measuring machine achieves a resolution in the micrometer range.
For this reason, the mechanical components and sensors are matched to each other in
every detail. Insofar as is constructively possible, mechanical assemblies and individual
parts which are not subject to adjustment have been used. Such parts/assemblies which
have to be adjusted for functional reasons have been adjusted by Micro-Epsilon.
The commissioning of the MTS 8202.LLT does not require any adjustment work by the
customer. The customer is responsible for providing a protective device to avoid a colli-
sion between the belt/strip material (target) and the measuring machine.
3.2 Basic Components

The base frame with the upper and lower beams is the basis of the system. It holds the
triangulation scanners and the remaining components. The base frame consists of a
solid aluminum profile frame.
The linear guide and the drive for the horizontal displacement of the base frame are on
the bottom of the measuring machine
-for positioning the measuring machine on the target,
-for calibrating the measuring machine with the calibration object (= reference).

3.2.2 Sensors
The two triangulation scanners measure without contact the thickness of the strip as they
pass between the upper and lower beams of the measuring machine, see Fig. 2.
iOptional air purge at the sensors in the upper and lower beams reduces dust accu- mulation, etc. on the glass panes for the sensors.

3.2.3 Calibration Component
For a reference measurement, a calibration component is used to detect deviations.
The calibration component holder is retracted into the measuring gap of the measur-
ing machine when required. The relevant calibration component is (note the chamfer)
mounted in the correct position in the calibration component holder. Following the
reference measurement, the measuring machine automatically positions the calibration
component holder in the parking position again.

3.3 Drive and Linear Guide
The base frame is positioned horizontally by means of an electric drive unit and tooth
belt drive. An encoder mounted axially on the drive motor measures the position of the
base frame, so allowing a precise assignment of the measured values in the direction
transverse to the target.

frame. Buffers (1) prevent a collision of base frame and linear guide, see Fig. 13.

3.4 Purge Air - Laser Scanners
Laser scanners are based on an optical principle. In order to avoid possible impairment
by e.g. dust on the laser scanner (lower belt), the glass surfaces of the laser beam exit
and the receiver are continuously air purged in order to prevent dirt deposits, see Fig. 9.

3.5 Cable Carrier
The cable carrier (1), see Fig. 14, is attached to the base frame and supplies power to all
the components that are on the base frame. These develop a so-called "polygon effect"
during movement since the invidiual chain links get kinked. With a precise measuring
machine, this effect acts negatively on the measurement result. For this reason, a special
cable carrier which shows no polygon effect is used. This ensures a smooth run and
precise measurements.

3.6 Compressed Air Supply
The compressed air is used for the movement of the calibration component, see Fig. 10
and for air purging the sensors, see Fig. 9.
Commissioning work performed by the customer:

The maintenance unit consists of a filter control unit for preparing the compressed air
and generating the working pressure. The compressed air is monitored electronically. In
the event of a drop in the nominal pressure from 5 bar to under 4 bar, a signal is sent to
the measuring machine's controller. The controller forwards this information to the user
interface.

To visualize the operating states over long distances, the system features a signal lamp,
see Fig. 17 (1).

3.7.2 Emergency Stop
The measuring machine a AREA stop button. The measuring system uses the EMER-
GENCY stop signal from the production line. If an EMERGENCY stop signal is detected,
the measuring system stops the thickness measurement. If the emergency stop is can-
celed by the production control, the sensor system returns to the rest position.

3.7.4 On/Off switch
The system’s On/Off switch (1) is located on the control cabinet. The On/Off switch dis-
connects all poles of the system from the power supply grid. The position of the On/Off
switch is monitored by the software.
Normal switching on
-Move the main switch to "ON". The PC
does not start automatically.
-Start PC from the control panel, the
control cabinet.

3.7.5 Keyboard, PPC
Keyboard and PPC is located on the control cabinet.
3.8 Transport, Transport Lock
Avoid damage when transporting the measuring machine, especially to any protruding
parts.

Torx™ T20 bit

-2 round slings
-Traverse/cross member
Mass of the measuring machine approx. 800 kg including packaging
Mass of the control cabinet approx. 500 kg including packaging
Only raise the measuring machine a few centimeters; this prevents the measuring sys-
tem from tipping over.
Avoid any unnecessary jolting of the measuring system, for example due to fast lowering
of the measuring system from a forklift.
The measuring machine must not be lifted on one side and then pulled.
iYou will need at least two people and a forklift to transport the measuring machine.
Transport the measuring machine and its packaging to the destination with a forklift.
Open the wooden crate of the measuring machine. Use a rechargeable electric
screwdriver, bit size T20.

Avoid any lateral forces on the sidewalls of the wooden crate.

Undo the transport locks (lashing straps/cable ties on the base frame), see 4.2.
Place the round slings onto the two transport eyebolts. Attach the round slings to a
cross member. Do not lift the measuring machine.
Make sure that the load direction points vertically upwards.

iThe measuring machine must always be transported using the two eyebolts and a cross-beam, see Fig. 19.
Remove the four screws of the transport locking closures on the bottom of the
wooden crate. Use an Allen (hexagonal) key and an open-end wrench to do this.

Lift the measuring machine for approx. 6 cm and remove the bottom of the transport
box.
Position the measuring machine at its final destination. Use a crane or a forklift for
this.

Put the measuring machine down carefully. Avoid placing the measuring machine
down on the floor using jerky movements.

while transporting the measuring machine.
Integrate the measuring machine into your industrial environment.
Switching cabinet
The switching cabinet and the accessories are packed in the wooden box of the switch-
ing cabinet, see Fig. 21.

Carefully lift the control cabinet and remove it from the transport box.
Position the switching cabinet at its final destination.
Put the switching cabinet down carefully. Avoid placing the switching cabinet down
on the floor using jerky movements.
