This vacuum cleaner complies with current safety re-
quirements. Inappropriate use can, however, lead to per-
sonal injury and damage to property.
To avoid the risk of accidents and damage to the vacuum
cleaner, please read these instructions carefully before
using it for the first time. They contain important informa-
tion on its safety, operation and maintenance.
Keep these instructions in a safe place and ensure that
new users are familiar with the content. Pass them on to
any future owner.
Always disconnect the vacuum cleaner from the mains
supply when you have finished using it, before changing
over accessories, as well as for maintenance work and
cleaning. Switch the vacuum cleaner off at the wall
socket and unplug it.
Correct application
 This vacuum cleaner is intended for cleaning flooring in
domestic households and similar residential environments.
 This vacuum cleaner can be used for all normal cleaning
of carpets, rugs and robust hard flooring.
 This vacuum cleaner is not intended for outdoor use.
 The vacuum cleaner must only be used to vacuum dry
floor surfaces. Do not use on people and animals. Any
other usage, modification or alteration is not supported by
the manufacturer and could be dangerous.

 This vacuum cleaner can only be used by people with
reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of
experience or knowledge, if they are supervised whilst us-
ing it or have been shown how to use it in a safe way and
understand and recognise the consequences of incorrect
operation.
Safety with children
 Danger of suffocation. Packaging, e.g. plastic wrap-
pings, must be kept out of the reach of babies and chil-
dren. Whilst playing, children could become entangled in
packaging or pull it over their head and suffocate.
 Children under 8 years of age must be kept away from
the vacuum cleaner unless they are constantly supervised.
 Children 8 years and older may only use the vacuum
cleaner unsupervised if they have been shown how to use
it safely and recognise and understand the consequences
of incorrect operation.
 Children must not be allowed to clean or maintain the
vacuum cleaner unsupervised.
 Please supervise children in the vicinity of the vacuum
cleaner and do not let them play with it.
 Models with radio controls on the handle: Keep batteries
out of the reach of children.

Technical safety
 Before using the vacuum cleaner and its accessories,
check for any visible signs of damage. Do not use a dam-
aged appliance.
 Ensure that the connection data on the data plate of the
vacuum cleaner (voltage and frequency) match the mains
electricity supply exactly. The vacuum cleaner is suitable
for use with 50 Hz or 60 Hz without modification.
 The mains electrical plug must be fitted with an appro-
priate fuse.
 Reliable and safe operation of this vacuum cleaner can
only be assured if it has been connected to the mains elec-
tricity supply.
 While the vacuum cleaner is under guarantee, repairs
should only be undertaken by a Miele authorised service
technician. Otherwise the guarantee will be invalidated.
 Do not pull or carry the vacuum cleaner by the cable,
and be careful not to damage the cable when withdrawing
the plug from the socket. Keep the cable away from sharp
edges and do not let it get squashed, for example, under a
door. Avoid running the vacuum cleaner over the cable.
This could damage the cable, plug or socket. The appli-
ance must not be used if any of these have suffered dam-
age.

 Do not use the vacuum cleaner if the cable is damaged.
If the cable is damaged it must be replaced together with a
complete cable rewind. For safety reasons this work must
be done by the Miele Service Department or a Miele au-
thorised service technician.
 When vacuuming, in particular fine dust, e.g. sawdust,
sand, plaster, flour, talcum powder etc., electrostatic
charges build up naturally. Under certain conditions these
charges will be released. To avoid the unpleasant effects of
these discharges, a metal inlay has been incorporated into
the underside of the handle. Please make sure that you
keep your hand in constant contact with this metal strip
during vacuuming.
 Do not let the vacuum cleaner get wet. Clean only with a
dry cloth or slightly damp cloth when disconnected from
the mains supply.
 Repairs should only be carried out by a Miele authorised
service technician. Repairs and other work by unqualified
persons can cause considerable danger to users.
Correct use
 To avoid the risk of damage, do not use the vacuum
cleaner without the dustbag, dust compartment filter and
exhaust filter in place.
 The dust compartment cover will not close without a
dustbag fitted. Do not force it.

 Do not vacuum up anything which has been burning or
is still glowing e.g. cigarettes, ashes or coal, whether glow-
ing or apparently extinguished.
 Do not use the vacuum cleaner to vacuum up any water,
liquid or damp dirt. Wait until any freshly cleaned or sham-
pooed rugs or carpets are completely dry before attempt-
ing to vacuum.
 Do not use the vacuum cleaner to vacuum toner dust.
Toner, such as that used in printers and photocopiers, can
conduct electricity.
 Do not vacuum up any inflammable or combustible li-
quids or gases and do not vacuum in areas where such
substances are stored.
 Do not vacuum at head height and do not let the suction
get anywhere near a person's head.
 Important information on the handling of batteries (for
models with radio controls on the handle):
– Do not short circuit or recharge the battery, or throw it
into a fire.
– Disposing of the battery: Remove the battery from the
radio control handle and dispose of it in a designated re-
cycling bin for batteries. Do not dispose of it with the
normal household waste.

Accessories
 To avoid the risk of injury when vacuuming with a Miele
Turbobrush, do not touch the rotating roller brush.
 It is not advisable to vacuum directly with the handle, i.e.
without an accessory attached as the rim could get dam-
aged and you could hurt yourself on sharp edges.
 Only use genuine dustbags, filters and accessories with
the "Original Miele" logo on them. Otherwise the manufac-
turer cannot guarantee the safety of the product.
Miele cannot be held liable for damage caused by incor-
rect use or operation or by non-compliance with these
Warning and Safety instructions.

Disposal of packing material
The packaging is designed to protect
against transportation damage. The
packaging materials used are selected
from materials which are environment-
ally friendly for disposal and should be
recycled.
Recycling the packaging reduces the
use of raw materials in the manufactur-
ing process and also reduces the
amount of waste in landfill sites. Ensure
that any plastic wrappings, bags,etc.
are disposed of safely and kept out of
the reach of babies and young children.
Danger of suffocation.
Disposing of the dustbag and
filters
Dustbags and filters are made from en-
vironmentally friendly materials, and can
be disposed of with the normal house-
hold waste, as long as they have been
used exclusively for general household
dust.
Disposing of your old appli-
ance
Before disposing of your old appliance
remove the dustbag and filters and dis-
pose of them with your household
waste.
Electrical and electronic equipment of-
ten contains valuable materials. These
include substances which, if handled or
disposed of incorrectly, could be poten-
tially hazardous to human health and to
the environment. They are, however, es-
sential for the correct functioning of
your appliance. Please do not therefore
dispose of it with your domestic waste.
Please dispose of it at your local com-
munity waste collection / recycling
centre, or contact your dealer for ad-
vice.
Ensure that it presents no danger to
children while being stored for disposal.

Notes on Delegated Regulation
(EU) No. 665/2013 and
666/2013
This vacuum cleaner is a domestic va-
cuum cleaner and is classified as a uni-
versal vacuum cleaner in accordance
with the above delegated regulations.
These operating instructions, the EU
data sheet and the energy efficiency la-
bel for this vacuum cleaner are available
to download on the Miele website at
www.miele.co.uk.
The annual energy consumption stated
on the data sheet and on the energy ef-
ficiency label describes the indicative
annual energy consumption (kWh per
year), based on 50 cleaning cycles. Ac-
tual energy consumption depends on
how the vacuum cleaner is used.
All tests and calculations were carried
out according to the following harmon-
ised standards applicable at the time in
due consideration of the published reg-
ulation guidelines of the European
Commission from September 2014:
a) EN 60312-1 Vacuum cleaners for
household use - Part 1: Dry vacuum
cleaners - Methods for measuring the
performance
b) EN 60704-2-1 Household and similar
electrical appliances - Test code for the
determination of airborne acoustical
noise - Part 2-1: Particular requirements
for vacuum cleaners
c) EN 60335-2-2 Household and similar
electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-2:
Particular requirements for vacuum
cleaner and water suction appliances
Not all floorheads and accessories sup-
plied with the vacuum cleaner are suit-
able for intensive cleaning of carpets or
hard floors as described in the regula-
tions. The following floorheads and set-
tings were used to determine the val-
ues:
a) For energy consumption, cleaning
class and sound power level on carpet
the adjustable floorhead supplied was
used in the carpet position (see "Pre-
paring for use").
b) For energy consumption and clean-
ing class on hard floors the adjustable
floorhead supplied was used in the hard
floor position (see "Preparing for use").
If your vacuum cleaner is supplied as
standard with the SRD hard floor brush,
this is designed for intensive vacuuming
of hard floors with gaps and crevices
and will have been used to determine
the above values on hard floors.
The values on the EU data sheet and
the energy efficiency label refer exclus-
ively to the combinations and settings
of floorheads on the different floor sur-
faces described here.
Original Miele dustbags, dust compart-
ment filters and exhaust filters were
used for all measurements.

The illustrations referred to in the text
are shown on the fold-out pages at
the end of these operating instruc-
tions.

Preparing for use
Attach the suction hose (dia. 01)
Insert the hose connector into the
suction socket on the vacuum
cleaner until it clicks into position. To
do this, line up the guides on the two
pieces.
To detach the suction hose (dia. 02)
Press the release buttons at the side
of the hose connector, and lift the
hose from the socket.
Connect the suction hose to the
handle (dia. 03)
Insert the suction hose into the
handle until it clicks into position.
Connect the handle to the suction
tube (dia. 04)
Insert the handle into the suction tube
until it clicks into position. To do this,
line up the guides on the two pieces.
To release the handle from the suc-
tion tube, press the release button
and pull the handle out of the suction
tube, twisting it slightly as you do so.
Adjusting the telescopic suction tube
Depending on the model, your vacuum
cleaner will be fitted as standard with
one of the following suction tubes:
– Telescopic tube
– Comfort telescopic tube
One part of the telescopic tube is
packed inside the other, and it can be
adjusted to suit your height for comfort-
able vacuuming.
Telescopic tube (dia. 05)
Press the release button and adjust
the tube to the desired height.
Comfort telescopic tube (dia. 05)
Grasp the release mechanism and
adjust the telescopic suction tube to
the required length.
Connect the telescopic suction tube
to the floorhead / SRD hard floor-
brush (dia. 06)
Push the telescopic suction tube into
the floorhead / hard floorbrush and
turn it clockwise or anti-clockwise un-
til it clicks into position.
Press the release button to separate
the individual sections from each
other.
Using the SRD hard floorbrush
(depending on model)
Please observe the flooring manu-
facturer's cleaning and care instruc-
tions.
This hard floorbrush is especially suit-
able for vacuuming floors with deep
gaps and crevices, e.g. old wooden
flooring.
To adjust the floorhead (dia. 07 + 08)
This vacuum cleaner can be used for
daily cleaning of carpets, rugs and ro-
bust hard flooring.
Miele offer a range of other floorheads,
brushes and accessories for other types
of flooring and special requirements
(see "Optional accessories").

Please observe the flooring manu-
facturer's cleaning and care instruc-
tions.
Vacuum carpets and rugs with the
brush retracted:
Press the  foot control.
Clean hard flooring which is not sus-
ceptible to scratching, as well as floor-
ing with gaps or deep crevices in it with
the brush protruding:
Press the  foot control.
If the suction power of the adjustable
floorhead seems too high, reduce the
suction until the floorhead is easier
to manoeuvre (see "Use - To regulate
the suction power").
To activate the exhaust filter change
indicator
Depending on model, your vacuum
cleaner will be fitted as standard with
one of the following exhaust filters (dia.
09).
a AirClean
b Active AirClean 50 (black)
c AirClean Plus 50 (light blue)
d HEPA AirClean 50 (white)
If your vacuum cleaner is fitted with fil-
ter b, c or d, you need to activate the
exhaust filter change indicator.
Press the release catch for the dust
compartment lid and raise the lid as
far as it will go (dia. 10).
Remove the indicator strip (dia. 11).
Press the exhaust filter change indic-
ator (dia. 12).
After approx. 10 - 15 seconds a thin red
line will appear in the left hand side of
the display (dia. 13).
Close the dust compartment lid se-
curely, making sure it clicks into posi-
tion. Take care not to trap the dust-
bag when doing so.
Exhaust filter change indicator
The exhaust filter change indicator
shows the remaining functional life of
the exhaust filter. After approx. 50 oper-
ating hours, or approx. one year of av-
erage use, the display will be com-
pletely filled with red (dia. 14).
Using the accessories supplied
(dia. 15)
Crevice nozzle
For cleaning in folds, crevices or
corners.
Dusting brush with natural
bristles
(only available for selected coun-
tries)
For cleaning skirting boards, or-
nate and carved objects.
The head can be swivelled to ad-
just the angle.
Upholstery nozzle
For cleaning upholstery, mat-
tresses, cushions, curtains, covers
etc.
Some models are supplied as standard
with one of the following accessories
which are not illustrated.

These are supplied with their own oper-
ating instructions.
To open the accessories compart-
ment (dia. 16)
Press the release button on the ac-
cessories compartment lid.
The accessories compartment will then
open.
Take out the accessory you require.
Press down firmly on the lid to close
it.
Standard adjustable floorhead
(dia. 17)
For general use and also for vacuuming
the stairs.
For safety reasons when vacu-
uming stairs it is best to start at the
bottom of the stairs and move up-
wards.
Use
Unwind the mains cable (dia. 18)
Pull the mains cable out to the re-
quired length, max. cable length ap-
prox. 7.5 m. (Exception: the Complete
C3 XXL SGSE1 and SGSG1 max. ap-
prox. 8.5 m).
Insert the plug into the socket cor-
rectly and switch on.
If vacuuming for longer than 30
minutes, the mains cable must be
pulled out to its fullest extent. Other-
wise there is a danger of overheating
and damage.
Rewinding the cable (dia. 19)
Switch off at the wall socket and
withdraw the plug.
Step on the cable rewind footswitch.
The cable will then retract itself into the
vacuum cleaner.
If you do not want the cable to retract
completely into the vacuum cleaner
you can stop it before it does. Take
hold of the end of the cable whilst re-
tracting it and give it a short pull just
before the end.
To switch on and off (dia. 20)
Press the On/Off foot control .
To regulate the suction power
The suction power can be regulated to
suit the type of flooring being cleaned.
Reducing the suction power reduces
the amount of effort required to man-
oeuvre the floorhead.
The vacuum cleaner has symbols on
the controls which indicate the type of
use the settings are suitable for.
The setting selected will light up yellow.
Curtains, fabric
Upholstery, cushions
Cut pile carpets, rugs and run-
ners
Energy-saving vacuuming. This
setting is also very quiet
Loop pile carpet and rugs
Hard flooring and heavily soiled

When using the adjustable floorhead,
if the suction seems too high, reduce
the suction until the floorhead is
easier to manoeuvre.
Depending on the model, your vacuum
cleaner will be fitted as standard with
one of the following suction power se-
lectors:
– Foot controls
– Radio-control handle
Foot controls (dia. 21)
The first time the vacuum cleaner is
switched on, the highest setting will be
selected automatically.
After that the vacuum cleaner will
switch on at the setting which was used
previously.
Press the + foot control to select a
higher setting.
Press the - foot control to select a
lower setting.
Footswitch with Boost function
(dia. 22 + 23)
Some models also feature a Boost
power function. This function uses in-
creased power for a short period for va-
cuuming both fine and coarse stubborn
soiling.
Press the + footswitch until the max-
imum power level has been reached.
Then press the + footswitch again.
This activates the Boost function for 20
seconds. The Boost indicator will light
up yellow.
You now have the following options:
Press the - footswitch before the 20
seconds have elapsed.
This switches the Boost function off
and activates maximum power.
Press the + footswitch again once the
20 seconds have elapsed.
This activates the Boost function for an-
other 20 seconds. It can be activated
three times in a row. After that a pause
of one minute is required before reactiv-
ating it.
Using the Boost power setting
changes the actual power consump-
tion (see "Notes on Delegated Regu-
lation (EU) No. 665/2013 and
666/2013").
Radio-control handle (dia. 24)
When the vacuum cleaner is switched
on with the On/Off foot control , the
Standby indicator  on the vacuum
cleaner will light up yellow.
Press the Standby button  on the
handle.
The Standby indicator  on the va-
cuum cleaner will go out.
The first time the vacuum cleaner is
switched on, the highest setting will be
selected automatically.
After that the vacuum cleaner will
switch on at the setting which was used
previously.
Press the + button to select a higher
suction power level.
Press the - button to select a lower
suction power level.

Radio-control handle with Boost
function
Some models also feature a Boost
power function. This function uses in-
creased power for a short period for va-
cuuming both fine and coarse stubborn
soiling.
Press the + control until the maximum
power level has been reached.
Then press the + control again.
This activates the Boost function for 20
seconds. The Boost indicator on the va-
cuum cleaner will light up yellow
You now have the following options:
Press the - control before the 20
seconds have elapsed
This switches the Boost function off
and activates maximum power.
Press the + control again once the 20
seconds have elapsed
This activates the Boost function for an-
other 20 seconds. It can be activated
three times in a row. After that a pause
of one minute is required before reactiv-
ating it.
Using the Boost power setting
changes the actual power consump-
tion (see "Notes on Delegated Regu-
lation (EU) No. 665/2013 and
666/2013").
To open the air inlet valve
(dia. 25 + 26)
(not on models with radio-controls on
the handle)
It is easy to reduce the suction power
for a short time, e.g. to prevent rugs or
other objects being sucked into the va-
cuum cleaner.
Open the air inlet valve on the handle
far enough to reduce the suction
power.
The floorhead will be easier to man-
oeuvre.
During vacuuming
When vacuuming, pull the cleaner be-
hind you on its wheels. You can stand
it upright for vacuuming stairs and
curtains etc.
When vacuuming, in particular
fine dust, e.g. sawdust, sand, plaster,
flour, talcum powder etc., electro-
static charges build up naturally. Un-
der certain conditions these charges
will be released. To avoid the un-
pleasant effects of these discharges,
a metal inlay has been incorporated
into the underside of the handle.
Please make sure that you keep your
hand in constant contact with this
metal strip during vacuuming (dia. 27
+ 28).
Interrupting operation (dia. 24)
(for models with radio controls on the
handle)
The vacuum cleaner can be paused for
short breaks whilst vacuuming.
Press the Standby button  on the
handle.

The Standby button is designed
to pause the vacuum cleaner for
short periods of time whilst vacuum-
ing. Do not leave the vacuum cleaner
in Standby mode for long periods.
Otherwise there is a risk of overheat-
ing and damage.
An LED will indicate each time a button
is pressed on the handle.
At the end of the pause you can do one
of the following:
Press the Standby button  again to
switch the vacuum cleaner back on at
the setting you were using before
pausing it.
Press the + button to switch the va-
cuum cleaner back on using the
highest power setting.
Press the - button to switch the va-
cuum cleaner back on using the low-
est power setting.
Setting down, transportation
and storage
Park System for pauses during vacu-
uming (dia. 29)
The Park system allows you to conveni-
ently park the suction tube and floor-
head during pauses.
Slot the floorhead or floorbrush into
the parking attachment on the va-
cuum cleaner.
If your vacuum cleaner is on a slop-
ing surface, e.g. a ramp, retract the
telescopic tube fully.
Park system On/Off switch
Some models are fitted with an On/Off
switch in the Park system.
The vacuum cleaner switches off auto-
matically when the floorhead or floor-
brush is slotted into the parking attach-
ment. When it is removed from the
parking attachment, the vacuum
cleaner switches back on at the previ-
ously selected power level.
Park system for storage (dia. 30)
Always disconnect the vacuum
cleaner from the electrical supply
when you have finished using it.
Switch it off at the wall socket and
unplug it.
Stand the vacuum cleaner upright.
Retract the telescopic tube fully so
that the vacuum cleaner takes up less
room for storage.
Slot the floorhead downwards into
one of the parking attachments on
the side of the vacuum cleaner.
This makes the vacuum cleaner easier
to carry or store.
Maintenance
Always disconnect the vacuum
cleaner from the electrical supply for
maintenance work and for cleaning.
Switch off at the wall socket and un-
plug it.
The Miele filtration system consists of
three components:
– Dustbag

– Dust compartment filter (for motor
protection)
– Exhaust filter
These will need to be replaced from
time to time to ensure that your vacuum
cleaner performs efficiently.
We recommend only using genuine
dustbags, filters and accessories
with the "Original Miele" logo on
them. This will ensure that the suc-
tion power of the vacuum cleaner is
maintained, giving the best possible
cleaning results.
Dustbags with the "Original Miele"
logo on them are not made from pa-
per or paper-based materials and nor
do they have a cardboard collar. This
is why our dustbags are particularly
long-lasting and reliable.
Please note that appliance faults and
damage originating from the use of
accessories which do not carry the
"Original Miele" logo will not be
covered by the appliance guarantee.
Purchasing new dustbags and filters
Original Miele dustbags and filters can
be ordered from Miele, your Miele
dealer, or from the Miele Webshop.
Ordering the correct dustbags and
filters
Only use original Miele G/N dustbags
with a blue collar and original Miele fil-
ters. These are identified by the "Ori-
ginal Miele" logo on the packaging or
directly on the dustbag.
An AirClean filter and a dust compart-
ment filter are supplied with every
packet of Miele dustbags.
These can also be purchased separ-
ately from your Miele Dealer, from Miele
or from the Miele Webshop. Please
quote the model number of your va-
cuum cleaner when ordering to make
sure you get the correct filter.
When to change the dustbag (dia. 31)
Change the dustbag when the colour
marker in the dustbag change indicator
turns red, or sooner if it is no longer ef-
fective (see possible reasons for this
below).
Miele dustbags are disposable and
designed for single use only. Dispose
of the dustbag when full. Do not at-
tempt to reuse. Blocked pores in
used dustbags will reduce the suc-
